‘It was part of the lesson plan to show kids the effects of alcohol’ A teacher in Oklahoma was arrested after showing up for her first day of work drunk and pantsless Monday, according to CBS Houston. The station reported that Lorie Hill, 49, was charged with public intoxication after police found her disoriented in a classroom and a cup smelling of vodka in her car. D.C. residents spend more money, per capita, on goods and services than people in any of the 50 states, says a new study by the federal government. To see such healthy consumerism in action, we hit Thursday’s grand opening of the H&M on Connecticut Avenue. The crowd was disappointingly frugal. Carol Meyer, 63, who preferred prior tenant Filene’s Basement, bought a $10 shirt. “Who’s Filene?” asked 28-year-old Liliana Arroyo, above, the new owner of a $7 bra. S.D.

Busker sues Metro for right to tips BILL O’LEARY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Former Republican National Committee chairman Michael Steele said Thursday in an appearance on News Channel 8 that he is considering another run for office in Maryland. He didn’t say what office he might seek. Last summer, Steele floated the idea of running for governor this year but ultimately decided to take a pass on the Republican primary, in which Larry Hogan prevailed in June. Steele served from 2003 to 2007 as lieutenant governor under Bob Ehrlich, Maryland’s only GOP chief executive during the past generation.

D.C. officials said Thursday they are working to take down the love locks.

In D.C., love locks get little affection THE DISTRICT D.C. transportation officials, having taken a look at the spate of love locks that young romantics have been attaching to the Key Bridge, said they were working to remove them from the span Thursday. Adopting a trend that has been popular, and problematic, in Paris, New York and other cities, lovers have snapped padlocks bearing their initials and other endearments on the pedestrian railing. In New York, the transportation department has an ongoing removal campaign against thousands of locks appearing on city bridges. In Paris, a section of footbridge railing became so encumbered with the metal tokens that

it collapsed last summer. Fearing such an overload of love here, officials decided to apply the bolt cutters to the few dozen locks that have sprung up on the bridge between Georgetown and Rosslyn and a few other walkways. D.C. Department of Transportation spokesman Reggie Sanders said they hoped to curtail the trend before it reaches Brooklyn Bridge proportions, where workers have removed more than 9,000 locks in recent months. “We don’t want to establish a [precedent] where our structures could become polluted with these types of campaigns,” Sanders said in an email Thursday. “Also it could jeopardize the functionality of the railings.”

Guitarist Alex Young, a busker who has been threatened with arrest twice by WMATA police for playing with an open guitar case, filed a lawsuit against the transit system in federal court, the Christian Science Monitor reported. Young’s suit argues that playing with an open guitar case is a protected activity under the First Amendment. Police say the act of playing with an open case amounts to soliciting tips, a commercial activity prohibited on Metro property. Young’s lawyer has asked the judge to stop Metro officials from enforcing the policy. A hearing is set for Thursday. BETH MARLOWE (EXPRESS)

Va. tightens its voter ID requirements Inflaming an already contentious debate over voter ID laws, Virginia’s State Board of Elections decided this week that voters must present a current photo ID or one that has expired in the past year to cast a ballot. JENNA PORTNOY ( THE WASHINGTON POST )

The history The commonwealth has had identification requirements in place for years, but more recently Republicans have enacted increasingly strict limits on what constitutes an acceptable ID. They argued that previous laws were too loose and did not combat voter fraud. Democrats say voter ID laws are part of a strategy to suppress the votes of minorities, the elderly, college students and the poor.

The proponents Supporters say the move streamlines and simplifies the rules. “We believe it’s a compromise and gives people a reasonable grace period,” said Donald Palmer, who was appointed to the board by former Gov. Bob McDonnell.

The opponents But Democrats and voting rights advocates argued that the new guideline will confuse voters less than two weeks before a special election where the new rule is expected to apply. “The board’s decision today makes it that much more difficult for voters to participate in our democracy,” said Tram Nguyen, co-director of Virginia New Majority.

NATO pledges support to Ukraine against Russia

Google’s autocomplete feature gets them sued

NATO’s chief defied Russian belligerence Thursday with a pledge to provide assistance to Ukraine, which is battling to quash pro-Russia rebels in the country’s east. Meanwhile, in rebel-held Donetsk, shelling struck residential buildings and a hospital, killing at least four people, local officials said, as government forces focus their efforts on taking back control of the city. When Hong Kong tycoon Albert Yeung Sau-shing Googled his name, the autocomplete feature suggested the word “triad,” a term associated with organized crime. Now he’s suing Google for libel. Yeung, founder of Emperor Group, has been found guilty of illegal bookmaking and other crimes, but has since tried to rehabilitate his image. Google tried to have the case dismissed, but Tuesday a judge said it could go to trial. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

The remains were found at the former Minus Funeral Home in Dover, Del.

Jonestown ashes found in Delaware DOVER, DEL. The cremated remains of nine victims of a 1978 mass cult suicide-murder in Jonestown, Guyana, have turned up in a former funeral home in Delaware, officials said Thursday. The state Division of Forensic Science has taken possession of the remains, discovered at the former Minus Funeral Home in Dover, and is working to make identifications and notify relatives, the agency and Dover police said in a statement. Last week, the Delaware agency responded to a request to check the former funeral home after 38 containers of remains were discovered inside. Thirty-three containers were marked and identified. They spanned a period from about

1970 to the 1990s and included the Jonestown remains. On Thursday, the dilapidated former funeral home had a padlock on the double front doors. The building showed few signs of its former use, and the backyard was littered with beer a cans. More than 900 people were killed in the Jonestown massacre in November 1978, when the Rev. Jim Jones ordered his followers to commit “revolutionary suicide” by drinking punch mixed with poison. There is actually a reason why bodies from Guyana would be taken to Delaware, of all places: Victims of the mass murdersuicide were flown on speciallyequipped Air Force transports to a mortuary at Dover Air Force Base. “I am hoping to make new friends, have interesting conversations and see new places along the way.”

PHNOM PENH, CAMBODIA They were leaders of Cambodia’s infamous Khmer Rouge, the fanatical communist movement behind a 1970s reign of terror that transformed this entire Southeast Asian nation into a ruthless slave state — a place where cities were emptied of their inhabitants, religion and schools were banned, and anyone deemed a threat was executed. When the nightmare ended, in 1979, close to 2 million people were dead — a quarter of Cambodia’s population at the time. On Thursday, a U.N.-backed tribunal convicted two of the once all-powerful men who ruled

during that era of crimes against humanity in the first and possibly the last verdicts to be issued against the group’s aging, top members. Although survivors welcomed the decision to impose life sentences against Khieu Samphan, an 83-year-old former head of state, and Nuon Chea, the movement’s 88-year-old chief ideologue, they also say justice has come far too late and is simply not adequate. “The crimes are huge, and just sentencing them to life in jail is not fair,” said 54-year-old Chea Sophon, who spent years in hard labor camps building dams and working in rice fields. “But what can I do?” he said. “Even if they die many times over, it would not be enough.” TODD PITMAN AND SOPHENG CHEANG (AP)

I had 3 tumors in my body

I was diagnosed with 3 tumors one on each side of my neck and a 13-inch tumor near my heart. Doctors told me that they weren’t sure if the medication would help me. The dark side of animal videos on YouTube The video was only 15 seconds long, but its subject could spend six months in jail — and there’s a $16,000 bounty on any information leading to his arrest. This is theoretically the price of filming animal cruelty and uploading it to YouTube, where thousands of people watched a man kick a squirrel off the Grand Canyon before YouTube took the video down earlier this week. The video has provoked lots of outrage. But even though authorities are investigating, officials say it’s unlikely the man will be found. And that underlines a problem that activists have complained about for years: YouTube, Vine and other video sites are favored hubs for clips of animal abuse. And in many cases, there’s not too much that anyone can do. YouTube and Vine prohibit violence that is purely “shocking, sensational” or otherwise gratuitous. But both networks also rely on a flagging system to catch inappropriate content. The system usually works, but it can work slowly. Frequently, videos are only taken down after they’ve already gone viral. Even once YouTube has caught an offending animal video, all users can do is flag it — and all YouTube will do is take the video down, often too quickly for the clip to be escalated to other authorities or investigated for clues. Richard Nixon, pop icon Saturday marks the 40th anniversary of President Richard Nixon’s resignation. As you’d expect, the media has been thick with retrospectives, and bookstore shelves are groaning with the weight of new revelations. If you’re wondering what Watergate meant for American politics, there are dozens of people waiting to tell you. But Nixon has quite a legacy in pop culture, too. Here’s an abridged dictionary of some of the ways Nixon has lived on in pop culture — or has influenced it. Crisis in Iraq deepens Obama considers airdrops, airstrikes as militants seize critical Mosul Dam

Iraqi Christians take refuge Thursday at St. Joseph Church in Irbil, northern Iraq, after militants overran their villages.

Baghdad Militants from the Islamic State seized Iraq’s largest hydroelectric dam Thursday, giving them control of enormous power and water resources and leverage over the Tigris River that runs through the heart of Baghdad. The fighting has trapped tens of thousands of members of religious minorities on a mountaintop, and the Obama administration was weighing possible airstrikes or airdrops of food and medicine to help them, according to U.S. defense officials. Thursday’s dam seizure was the latest in a string of victories by the Sunni radical group as it expands its hold in northern Iraq, driving back Kurdish forces, sending minority communities fleeing and unleashing bombings that have killed more than 90 people in the capital over the past two days. The al-Qaeda breakaway group posted a statement online Thursday confirming that, after weeks of attempts, it had taken control of the Mosul Dam. It vowed to continue “the march in all directions,” as it expands the Islamic state, or caliphate, it has imposed over broad swathes of territory straddling the IraqiSyrian border. The group said it has seized 17 Iraqi cities, towns and targets over the past five days. The Mosul Dam — once known as the Saddam Dam for ousted dictator Saddam Hussein — is just north of Iraq’s secondlargest city, Mosul, which fell to the militants June 10. Fighting intensified in the region Sunday after the towns of Zumar and

Sinjar fell to the militants, exacerbating the country’s crisis as some 200,000 Iraqis joined the 1.5 million people already displaced from violence this year. The Kurdish fighters had initially managed to stall the militant advances, but their defense has waned in recent weeks. Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has ordered the Iraqi air force to provide aerial support for the Kurds, in a rare show of cooperation that underscored the serious nature of the crisis. There are also fears the militants could release the dam waters and devastate the country all the way to the capital Baghdad. All the while, the Islamic State’s push across northern Iraq continues. The capture of Qaraqoush, Iraq’s biggest Christian village, and at least four other nearby hamlets, brings the Islamic State to the very edge of the Iraqi Kurdish territory and its regional capital, Irbil. Saad Youssef, a Sunni teacher from Baghdad, said Iraqis are deeply concerned over the possible breakup of their country amid the current failure to stop the militants’ push. “Now, we have [Islamic State] republic, Kurdish republic and Baghdad republic, and we could have more republics in the near future if the militants are not stooped,” he said. Hamas refuses to disarm, threatens to resume attacks

Russia on Thursday banned most imports of Western food products, a sweeping escalation in an economic war that will deal a multibillion-dollar hit to affected nations but will also have consequences at home. Michael Birnbaum ( The Washington Post )

The bans

Russia suspended imports of meat, fish, fruit, vegetables and milk products from the U.S., European Union, Norway, Canada and Australia for a year. The move came in retaliation for sanctions those countries issued over the conflict in Ukraine.

The other threat

In another move with Cold War echoes, Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said Thursday that Russia was considering banning U.S. and European airlines from Russian airspace. That could increase travel times and costs.

The effect on Russia

City supermarket shelves will no longer overflow with European goods. Food prices are likely to increase, and Russian food processing plants, shippers, retailers and other industries will be affected, analysts say.

The effect on the U.S.

The bans are “insignificant as an impact on the U.S. economy,” Treasury official David Cohen told reporters Thursday.

He has the NFL’s best receiving duo in Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery, and he’s no longer one of the most-sacked QBs. Last year, he was sacked 5.1 percent of the time — the sixth-lowest rate in the league.

It might not be the most popular move to draft a guy who’s suspended after an offseason domestic violence incident, but Rice should get plenty of carries when he returns from his two-game ban.

The former Steelers wideout gets the Peyton Manning bump. Sanders comes into the Broncos’ lineup in place of now-Jets receiver Eric Decker, who had 1,288 yards and 11 TDs in this offense in 2013.

As a rookie last year, he struggled to stay healthy, but his 55.4 yards per game ranked sixth in the NFL among tight ends. Reed had at least three catches in eight of the nine games he played in 2013.

The 32-year-old has thrown for more than 4,000 yards in five of his past six seasons, and he was fourth in the league with 32 touchdown passes in 2013.

The Jaguars don’t have many other options at running back. Gerhart, who’s battling a hip flexor injury, averaged 7.9 yards per rush in limited action with the Vikings last season.

Drew Brees has thrown for more than 5,000 yards in three straight seasons, so the Saints’ first-round pick should get his chances in the pass-happy offense.

The 6-foot-3, 255-pounder may be Miami’s best red-zone option. Last year, he had a team-high six touchdowns and went for at least 80 receiving yards in four games.

Don’t bet on Dalton in the playoffs, but for fantasy he’s a late-round steal. In 2013, he threw more touchdowns than anyone not named Manning or Brees.

The rookie out of Towson is behind Ben Tate on the depth chart, but West has been impressive in camp and Tate has a history of getting injured.

Few teams throw as much as Detroit, and Tate, who was with Seattle last year, could be the No. 2 receiver the Lions have been looking for to take pressure off Calvin Johnson.

The Colts’ second-round pick in 2012 has had a couple underwhelming seasons in the NFL, but he ended 2013 strong — with 11 catches for 120 yards and a TD in two playoff games.

Basketball

Meet the Nats’ new infielder

Durant won’t play for Team USA

In his first game as a National on Aug. 1, Asdrubal Cabrera broke to his left to retrieve a hard-hit

ground ball by Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins. Cabrera slid and extended his left arm to snag it before jumping to his feet, spinning and throwing Rollins out at first. It was the kind of play an experienced second baseman makes, not someone who hadn’t played the position since 2009. But that’s just one reason why the Nationals traded Cleveland for Cabrera right before last week’s trade deadline. “It’s not foreign to him. It always comes back,” manager Matt Williams said. “The mind always tells you I got time, I can go ahead and get down, spin around and make the play.” Express

What’s it like moving back to second base after spending the majority of your career as a shortstop? I feel really good over there. I played that position my first two years here in the big leagues. I’m feeling confident. The Indians were 6 ½ games out of first place before you were traded. How different is it coming to a team that’s in first place in its division with two months to go? It’s a big difference when you’re in first place with a team like this. It’s where you want to be.

66

We want to win and make a push. What’s it been like since coming here with your new teammates? There are a lot of nice guys here. I think that makes a difference between a good team and a bad team. I’m going to come in here and do my best to help those guys win. A while back in your career, you wore a white-beaded necklace y our wife made during games. Do you still wear that and what was the significance of it? Whoa, that was a long time ago.

I have it at home. … It was in 2007, [the year] I made it to the big leagues. Before I came to the United States, she made it to be good luck for that year. I used it for that year. I don’t wear it [in games] anymore. In innings four through six, you’ve hit .296 in your career. What is it about after that first at-bat that lets you settle in at the plate in those middle innings? I just try to do my best every at-bat. That’s what I plan to do. That’s where my focus is all the time, trying to get on base.

Harper hits game-winning homer in 13th

Bryce Harper’s two-run homer in the bottom of the 13th inning lifted Washington past the New York Mets on Thursday and gave the Nationals a season-high 41/2-game lead in the NL East. A rare shot: Harper’s homer to left was only his fourth of an injury-plagued season. It was the second game-winning shot of his career. The other came July 25, 2013, vs. Pittsburgh. His latest big hit also came a day after a little stir created by a radio talk-show host’s question to manager Matt Williams about whether it might make sense to send Harper to the minors to help him get out of a slump that had him hitting .250 entering Thursday.  From the slugger: “I knew it was gone. I mean, I felt it,” Harper said. “I haven’t felt like that in a while. I haven’t got extension on a ball in a pretty long time.” Ending a streak: Mets rookie Jacob deGrom’s five-start winning streak ended. He gave up three runs in six innings. Ian Desmond drove a full-count fastball into the visiting bullpen in the second — ending deGrom’s franchise rookie record for consecutive innings without allowing a homer at 67 1/3. Moveit without losingit Try these tips to get to your new rental and avoid headaches (and cops) Moving When Molly Olsen, 21, and her roommates were preparing to move to Capitol Hill in May, they expected hours of packing, heavy lifting, sweat and stress. What they didn’t expect was the police. Olsen heard the telltale sirens while driving a U-Haul truck just blocks from the White House. Olsen, a new George Washington University graduate, was informed she was passing through a no-truck zone. “They let us off [with a warning],” she says. “They saw how frazzled and flustered we were.” Still, Olsen says, the experience made her “never, ever, ever want to move again.” Moving is notoriously annoying, and the D.C. area offers its own special set of hurdles. But take heart: Here are some ways to make the process smoother, if not entirely enjoyable.

Use Craigslist to snap up packing materials, too, as lots of people are looking to offload boxes — often for free, Wise says. Or just ask around. Olsen and her roommates “went around to our local grocery stores and got their leftover boxes,” she says. “It saved us a lot of money.”

Then …

Research your route. Is it walkable?

No!

Drive it. Be prepared for no-truck zones and sitting in traffic and maybe crying.

Totally! OK! Yeah! We could play Twister!

Good luck to your biceps/back/knees!

And get your move on!

Recently, there have been several apartment buildings in the D.C. area that have just started to allow pets. This is great news for people who have been dreaming of the day that they can finally have a pet. But this is not the ideal living environment for everyone. Some tenants may have to work from home frequently and need a quiet environment. Severe allergies to pets can sometimes make it impossible for some people to live in a pet-friendly building. Here are some tips to help you find a non pet-friendly apartment: Friends and co-workers are a good resource. Ask them where

they live or have lived and if the property is pet-friendly. Check with the local management companies. Ask them which

properties have a no-pet policy. This will give you a list of non pet-friendly options. Talk to each individual property and ask the management if there have ever been pets allowed and if there are any plans to change their pet policies in the future. Consider renting an apartment in a condo or co-op building. In most

cases, the pet policies will stay the same as they have been — unless the condo owners decide to make a change in those policies. Just

It probably should go without saying, but when moving day rolls around, be ready. Keep time limits in mind. For example, if you have to reserve an elevator, expect to have it for only two to four hours. Beware of strict cutoffs at your new pad: During one move, Behrens says, he exceeded his reserved time and was shut out of the building. He had to quickly stash his furniture in a friend’s garage to return his U-Haul. He finished moving in over the course of a few weeks. If you’re driving a truck, make sure you are comfortable with it while navigating the streets. Mike Rogers, an accountant, drove a rented truck from D.C. to Arlington, but its wheel alignment was off, he says. “I was holding the wheel at a 45 degree angle, trying to drive it,” he says. Timing is crucial, too. Rogers struggled with Memorial Day weekend traffic. And be sure you pack strategically to unload what you need first. The first thing Rogers unpacked after his exhausting experience? His bed. ELLE MET Z (FOR E XPRESS)

because an owner is not allowing pets in the condo they are renting, this does not mean the building is not pet-friendly. Check with the management or ask to see a copy of the condo rules. Rentasingle-familyhomeortown house where you won’t have com-

mon areas to share or noise from other residents, furry or human. Nancy Simmons Starrs is president and founder ofApartment Detectives, a D.C., Maryland and Northern Virginia apartment search service. Starrs writes an occasional column on rental issues for The Washington Post’s Where We Live blog.

Good swill hunting

Jason Hornick (for Express)

Some rooms in Bill Thomas’ Northwest D.C. home look more like a BevMo! distribution center than a private residence.

Personalities “Hold this,” Bill Thomas whispers as he hands me a bottle of Macallan 18-year scotch that he’s just plucked off the top shelf at a liquor store in Hagerstown, Md. “We’ll talk about it in the car.” A peanut-sized dust bunny lands in his beard, but he’s too excited to notice. He grabs three other bottles of whiskey and checks out. Including the $199 bottle of Macallan, the total comes to $660. His girlfriend, Brittany Garrison, a local publicist, and I follow him to the car, which is relatively tidy save for a vintage ceramic decanter clinking around in the back seat. “This is absolute gold to me,”

he bursts out once we’ve shut our doors. “I’m literally overjoyed right now.” Garrison pulls out her iPhone and searches for “Macallan 18, vintage 1988” on a website that appraises alcohol. “OK, in 2013 it went for … holy s---!” Garrison says. “Well, this was in Hong Kong. Which is interesting because Asia has started purchasing a lot of American whiskeys in the past couple of …” “Are you going to tell us or what?” Thomas asks. “$1,840,” she says. “I can’t believe this is the first store we hit, and this is what we found,” Thomas says. “Let’s go. It’s already a really good trip.”

Jason Hornick (for Express)

Join the owner of D.C.’s Jack Rose Dining Saloon on the prowl for rare whiskeys

“A lot of the stuff we find has been sitting on the shelf since the ’80s. And it’s still priced at $12.99.” Bill thomas, owner of Jack Rose Dining Saloon in Adams Morgan. Over the past 12 years, Thomas (center, with girlfriend Brittany Garrison, left) has amassed a huge collection of rare whiskeys, primarily through hunts at local liquor stores, like S&S Liquors in Takoma Park, Md.

Jack Rose Dining Saloon, Thomas’ bar in Adams Morgan, houses more than 1,800 bottles of scotches, bourbons and ryes, making it one of the largest retailers of whiskeys in the Western Hemisphere. That’s still a nip compared to Thomas’ private stash of 4,000 bottles that he stores at his Northwest D.C. home. The collection is divided into two main categories: dusties (museum-quality bottles from old distilleries so-called for the layer of dust they collect after going unnoticed for so long) and special releases (limited-run, discontinued whiskeys from bigger brands). In both cases, there’s a finite amount available of these types of whiskey in the world, and the minute you take a sip of one, there’s that much less on the planet. Because of the whiskeys’ rarity, enthusiasts are willing to pay top dollar through a broker or at auctions. Or, as in Thomas’ case, spend their time “hunting” for them in the wild at liquor stores that sell them at retail prices far below their real-world values. “A lot of the stuff we find has been sitting on the shelf since the ’80s,” Thomas says. “And it’s still priced at $12.99.” Thomas, 44, searches primarily in D.C. and the surrounding area, though he’s increasingly spending more time in Kentucky. He can’t help but notice that his turf has gotten more crowded over the past two years. “Back in the day, when you went hunting you expected to find something,” he says. “Nowadays, it’s not guaranteed. You don’t have to know your craft anymore. Anybody can find an old bottle and Google it, and those are the people draining the market.” Thomas is on a high after his first “kill.” He doesn’t even mind that Garrison, the elected driver for the day, has gotten us turned around. (“I usually navigate because he doesn’t know how to use Google Maps,” she says when she thinks he’s not listening.) The next liquor store we hit

1 Balvenie Madeira Cask, purchased for $129. It’s not particularly valuable, but because it’s discontinued it can be hard to find. Thomas nabbed this bottle for a couple he knows who drank this whiskey on their wedding night. 2 Macallan 18, distilled in 1988, purchased for $199. A similar bottle was

recently purchased in Hong Kong for $1,840. 3 Olde Bourbon by J.W. Dant, 1980s-era, purchased for $15. It’s a version that stopped being produced after the distillery was acquired in the ’90s. 4 Laphroaig 10 Year Old Cask Strength — Batch 1, purchased for

$64.99. Each year, batches come out slightly different, depending on the weather, humidity, etc.

is more manicured than the first, which Thomas worries will mean fewer chances to nab a dusty. He’s right. On the way out, he asks the cashier if he has anything old lying around in the back. The inquiry gets the two talking about rare alcohols and the rise of whiskey hunters. “You can always tell when they come in,” the cashier says. “Some of them are jerks.” When Thomas mentions he owns Jack Rose, the cashier perks up. “Come here,” he tells Thomas, motioning to the other end of the counter with his head. He crouches down, pulls out a bottle of Stagg Jr. bourbon second release from Buffalo Trace Distillery in Kentucky and places it on the counter. “Already got it,” Thomas says. The cashier goes back under and comes up with a coveted Thomas H. Handy Sazerac rye whiskey from Buffalo Trace’s

Antique Collection. “Got that one, too.” We leave empty-handed, but the cashier tips us off to another store nearby. “It’s not exactly a retail gem, but you may know something he has that he doesn’t.” Domestic whiskey revenue rose 10.1 percent in 2013 over the year before, according to the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States. In comparison, vodka revenue was up only 2.2 percent and gin was down 0.6 percent. “Why do we have a Starbucks

$114

on every corner when a Dunkin’ Donuts would have been fine?” asks Frank Coleman, senior vice president of the D.C.-based trade association. “It’s because there’s a flavor revolution going on. People are leaning toward whiskey because they’re interested in products that have flavor,” as opposed to less-complex spirits like vodka. This is good news to Thomas, because it means a steady stream of customers thirsty for something unique. While most of the bottles he finds in the wild end up in his private stash, he uses some of them to replenish the stock at Jack Rose. But nothing he owns is sacred. “It’s all meant to be drunk eventually,” he says. “The collection is a library, not a museum.” The shop recommended by the cashier proves to be a bust. As does the next one we hit. And the next one. We stop at a total of 13 more stores in Hagerstown, which Thomas zeroed in on after an industry friend tipped him off that the town held some good finds. After replenishing at a roadside deli, we swing by six more shops with varying degrees of success before heading home. We’ve been at this for 71/2 hours, and Thomas is sated for now, with the day’s purchases ending up at just over $1,000. Long before he had his first sip of whiskey, Thomas collected aluminum cans when he was 7 to make money to spend at the arcade. The son of a major appliance salesman-turned-videostore owner, the Prince George’s County, Md., native grew up with a go-getter attitude. “My favorite quote is [attributed to] Abraham Lincoln: ‘Things may come to those who

Thomas opened his first bar — The Blue Room in Adams Morgan, which he later converted into Bourbon — in 1999 with money he earned scalping concert tickets. He also owns Breadsoda and another Bourbon in Glover Park. Thomas maintains his motives for whiskey hunting are not entirely financial. Rather, he’s more excited to own a little piece of history, and he finds peace while hunting. “I’m not maximizing my time by doing all of this. I’d be better off at Jack Rose pushing whiskey,” he says. “But sometimes you don’t want to do that. You want solitude. To me, this is relaxation.” HOLLEY SIMMONS (EXPRESS)

WHAT A STEAL

The total price that Thomas paid for six bottles of Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve 15 Year bourbon, which he found in a clearance bin in Kentucky a few years ago. (That’s just $19 each.) Today, one of the bottles would sell on the secondary market for around $800 due to its cachet and rarity. A 2-ounce shot of it is available at Jack Rose for $80. H.S.

Can two people share an umbrella during a rainstorm in a rom-com and NOT fall in love?

KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY | THE REELIST

Friendship story: ‘What If’ explores the other benefits The phrase “just friends” is near the top on the list of Things I Hate, right after tailgaters and cooked green peppers. “Friend zone” is also up there, nestled between people who text without turning that clicking noise off and turtlenecks. I don’t like anything that cheapens friendship and I particularly don’t like anything that insinuates that friendship is defined by its relationship to romance. That’s part of the reason I liked “What If” so much. In the film, out Friday, the friendship

between Wallace (Daniel Radcliffe) and Chantry (Zoe Kazan) is something worth having and worth protecting. “What If” isn’t so much a consideration of the question of “can a man and a woman be friends?” (The answer is yes. Stop asking.) It’s more of a look at “HOW can a man and a woman be friends?” Wallace wants to get romantic with Chantry; that can’t happen, but he likes her enough to work at maintaining their friendship. You don’t need romantic feelings to complicate a friendship. Having a nonsexual relationship with anyone you

might conceivably sleep with is to live in a hypothetical situation. Something might happen, and “What If” convincingly shows a relationship that both people value enough to live in that space between “might kiss” and “have kissed.” Admitting that something might happen and choosing to be friends anyway doesn’t make the relationship some weak version of dating, but a strong version of one of the best relationships life has to offer. In most rom-coms, friendship is only important if it leads to something “more.” Exceptions arise when puberty hasn’t hit yet, as in “My Girl,” or when the relationship isn’t central to the story, like with Lloyd Dobler and his two girl friends (not “girlfriends”) in “Say Anything.” Romance is an easy subject for the movies because its stages, from first kiss to final fight (or wedding, depending on what film you’re watching), are nicely structured. But

Lee Daniels will develop a film based on Brian Banks, a football player falsely accused of rape

when does a friendship start — when you meet, or when you realize the other person can use a “Simpsons” quote in regular conversation? When does a friendship end? Most tend to do so quietly, with a slow dissolution due to distance or circumstance. A breakup tears the fabric of your heart, but the end of a friendship fades the entire cloth. A rip can be stitched up, but vibrancy lost is vibrancy gone. Whether or not Wallace and Chantry end up together (and I’m not telling), what’s unique about their friendship is that they continually make tough decisions to preserve it — not because it’s a step toward or a substitute for romance, but because it, on its own, is important to them. “What If” is a rare film that holds friendship not as a means to an end, but as its own reward. Read Kristen Page-Kirby’s previous columns at washingtonpost.com/thereelist

A tornado that threatens to decimate a small town in Oklahoma is the antagonist of “Into the Storm.” Director Steven Quale and writer John Swetnam add a found footage element to the disaster-movie formula, including angles from stormchasing scientist Allison (Sarah Wayne Callies, above). The movie is at its best when the special effects are front and center. But sometimes even the destruction becomes silly. STEPHANIE MERRY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

‘Calvary’ (R) When Father James (Brendan Gleeson, above) hears during a confession that he’ll be killed in a week, he visits the motley members of his parish in the hopes of turning the heart of his would-be assassin. “Calvary” is a story that ultimately feels too overdetermined to be terribly profound. That weakness extends to the film’s dramatic, but unbelievable, end point. ANN HORNADAY (TWP)

FILM Daniel Radcliffe isn’t a wizard, but he can do anything he wants to. He can also not do anything he doesn’t want to. A lame rom-com full of irresponsible characters is something he didn’t want to do. “I wanted to make a film where people fall in love and just don’t go off hurting people and having affairs all over the place without any consequences,” the actor says. Radcliffe wanted to be in “What If.” In it, Boy meets Girl. There’s a spark. Girl already has a boyfriend. Girl and Boy are adults who make a series of mature decisions in order to protect their emotional health and the feelings of those around them. The end. There: That’s the plot (minus the ending). Boy is Wallace (Radcliffe) and Girl is Chantry (Zoe Kazan), and they meet at a party. In another movie, the force of their attraction would lead to cheating or a breakup. Instead, the two become close friends; even though Wallace is falling for Chantry, he keeps his mouth shut about it. “He’s desperately trying to be a good person and not screw anyone over, whilst still falling in love,” Radcliffe says.

DIRECTOR: Michael Dowse STARS: Daniel Radcliffe, Zoe Kazan,

Megan Park and Adam Driver IN A NUTSHELL: A sensitive young

man tries to sort out his romantic feelings toward his best friend, who has a long-term boyfriend.

Some of the obstacles to romance in “What If” are external, most notably Chantry’s longtime boyfriend, Ben (Rafe Spall) — far from the typical rom-com “wrong guy.” “There’s nothing [in her relationship] that she can point to that’s gone awry,” Radcliffe says, “but she meets [Wallace] and has that connection.” Still, she chooses to keep her romantic sights focused on Ben,

and Wallace, good guy that he is, keeps a respectful distance. The arrangement isn’t as simple as it sounds. “In a lot of movies the complexities of life are swept under the rug,” Radcliffe says. “In this film we used those real complexities to show that both of our characters are in this moral gray area all the time.” Radcliffe found a like-minded director in Michael Dowse (“Take Me Home Tonight”). “I wanted to make a movie that wasn’t the standard romcom where people act crazy and resort to insane shenanigans,” Dowse says. “I love the genre, and when you actually nail one you can make a perennial film. Unfortunately, a lot of them are neither funny nor romantic.” Radcliffe got his wish: “What If” is both. KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)

FILM REVIEW Some “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” devotees may be appeased by Paramount’s fairly faithful film reboot of their beloved reptilian superheroes. But more are likely to be disappointed to discover that the Turtles have been reduced to sidekicks to the film’s real focus: blockbuster sexpot Megan Fox. The film opens with an engaging, animated prologue that retells the legend of the sewerdwelling, genetically modified turtles and their rat sensei, Splinter (voice of Tony Shalhoub), and explains how New York City faces its biggest threat in the form of ruthless villain Shredder (Tohoru Masamune). Then it switches to 20 minutes of Fox, who, as television news reporter April O’Neil, desperately tries to convince her incredulous boss (Whoopi Goldberg) she’s got proof of vigilantes battling Shredder’s goons. When April finally has her first run-in with the crime

fighters, she faints, but not before she hears the Turtles call out their Renaissance names (Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael and Michelangelo) and squeak, “She’s so hot!” Maybe we shouldn’t be surprised by such fare from producer Michael Bay, but the characters — not to mention young viewers of this Nickelodeon co-production — deserve better. When the film moves past Fox to focus on the Turtles, the heroes in a half shell are undeniably impressive in ninja mode. Director Jonathan Liebesman

(“Wrath of the Titans”) knows how to highlight ILM’s performance-capture technology, which makes the Turtles’ movements so realistic. And the Turtles themselves are charming enough, even though there’s not much time invested in their personalities beyond the obvious broad strokes: Leo’s the focused leader, Donnie’s the tech genius, Rapha’s the hothead and Mikey gets to shout “Cowabunga!” But even during crowd-pleasing thrills, the comic relief once again circles back to the script’s favorite topic: April’s sex appeal. Perhaps the lingering shots of Fox will help young males in the audience overlook silly plot details. Considering two sequels are in the works, it’s clear the filmmakers believe tweens will just concentrate on the fun of wisecracking, weapon-wielding turtles (and, naturally, Fox’s hotness). While this reboot is fun, it’s also forgettable and occasionally infuriating. SANDIE ANGULO CHEN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

A ‘Journey’ worth skipping FILM REVIEW French and Indian restaurants stage a culinary showdown in “The Hundred-Foot Journey,” but the result is neither rich nor spicy. The movie is essentially a return to “Chocolat,” director Lasse Hallstrom’s 2000 tale of a provincial French town that reacts badly to the arrival of deliciousness. In that story, the intrusion was at least French; in this one, it’s Indian. The newcomers are led by Papa (veteran Indian actor Om Puri), who decides to stay in the immaculately picturesque

A revival of the musical “Side Show,” about a pair of conjoined twins during the vaudeville era, will open on Broadway this fall at the St. James Theatre, fresh off a run at the Kennedy Center. The show has been reimagined and directed by Bill Condon. Opening night is set for Nov. 17. Erin Davie and Emily Padgett, who starred when it played the Kennedy Center and La Jolla Playhouse earlier this year, will reprise their roles for Broadway. (AP)

Puri and Mirren are lively and well-matched, even if the British actress’ French accent is distracting. Among the items for auction are Willie Nelson’s braids, which the singer cut off in 1983 to show his solidarity with Jennings’ sobriety. “There are obviously some ripe pickings here for jokes about NASCAR fans, but if I make any of them I’ll undoubtedly be accused of latte-sipping elitism. But surely someone will step up to the plate?”

Maurice is the most uplifting person. He truly brightens my day. I even posted him on my blog because his positive attitude is so inspiring. Because of him, I read Express every day.

KEVIN DRUM AT MOTHERJONES.COM bites his tongue on news that the National Guard is ending its NASCAR sponsorship of Dale Earnhardt Jr., right, and Graham Rahal. USA Today reported the Guard spent $26.5 million on sponsorships in 2012, but of the 24,800 recruiting prospects it attracted through the program that year, only 20 met requirements and only one joined.

“No, Bart Simpson did not call Putin a ‘huylo,’ and no, there is no Crimea billboard in Springfield.” ADAM TAYLOR AT WASHINGTONPOST.COM/BLOGS/WORLDVIEWS

clarifies that a new version of “The Simpsons’ ” opening credits making its rounds on eastern European social networks is indeed unofficial. The parody features the above billboard reference to Russian president Vladimir Putin and also shows Bart Simpson filling the chalkboard with “Putin-Huylo” — an offensive term adopted by anti-Russian protesters in Ukraine.

“The child was screaming ‘I want [expletive] pie!’ so the man bought up every last pie — all 23 of them — and walked out of the Burger King location, turning only to see the enraged mother and child, helpless as the cashier told them that the restaurant had just sold out of pie.” EATER.COM explains one Reddit

user’s brilliant quick thinking at his local Burger King to teach a stranger’s child some patience.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You’ll be reminded of the importance of a certain relationship that you have perhaps been taking for granted of late. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) Now is no time for you to say “no” when you can certainly say “yes” and free yourself and others from certain annoying restrictions. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You will want to remind another that you are eager to work together on a certain project when the time is right, but now is not the time.

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.
