Obama Lawyers Up for Election Ebocf_W"MWi^$ President Obama’s campaign has recruited a legion of lawyers to be on standby for this year’s election as legal disputes surrounding the voting process escalate. Thousands of attorneys and support staffers have agreed to aid in the effort, providing a mass of legal support that appears to be unrivaled by Republicans or precedent. Republicans are building their own legal teams for the election. They say they’re focused on preventing fraud rather than turning away qualified voters. Since the disputed 2000 presidential election, both parties have increasingly concentrated on building legal teams for the Election Day run-up. Mitt Romney has been organizing his own legal help for the election, though his campaign did not provide numbers. Robert Bauer, who is organizing

the Obama campaign’s legal deployment, said there is concern this year because he believes GOP leaders nationwide have pursued new laws to impede the right to vote. Several states with Republican leaders have recently pursued changes that could make voting more difficult, including key states such as Florida and Ohio, despite objections from voting rights groups that believe that the laws could suppress votes from lowincome and minority blocs. Republicans dispute that the laws are political, pointing to cases of election fraud and arguing that
The Bush-Gore election demonstrated to both parties the importance of every vote and that rules for voting and counting might actually determine the outcome. The Florida count in 2000 was decided by just 537 votes and ultimately landed in the Supreme Court. Charles Lichtman, who is helping advise the campaign effort in Florida this year after leading it in the last two cycles, first created the Florida Democratic Lawyers Council after the 2000 election, vowing that there would never be a repeat of that disputed vote. He contends Democrat Al Gore would have won the presidency over Republican George W. Bush if a similar legal infrastructure had been in place then. (AP)

measures like those requiring voters to show identification are simply common sense. Independent from the Romney team, a conservative group is prepping an Election Day team of its own to combat possible fraud. Catherine Engelbrecht, president and founder of True the
Vote, said the organization hopes to mobilize up to 1 million volunteers this year, many of them poll watchers. One of the group’s main initiatives is to “aggressively pursue fraud reports.” It’s one of the efforts that have Obama’s team fretting. The Democrats fear that anti-fraud activity could get out of hand, with vigilante poll watchers targeting and intimidating voters who may not know their rights. “We will have the strategy and the resources to address the threat and protect the voter,” Bauer said. Jerry Sandusky’s son told police he was sexually abused starting when he was 8, a decade before the former Penn State assistant football coach adopted him, according to a police interview recording obtained by NBC News. Matt Sandusky, who was adopted by Jerry Sandusky as an adult, described for investigators being sexually abused off and on between the ages of 8 and 15, showering with the ex-coach and trying to avoid being groped in bed. He also said he was undergoing therapy, that his memories of abuse were only now surfacing and that he was coming forward so his family would know what happened.

The next day, Jerry was convicted on 45 criminal counts stemming from the abuse of 10 boys, all of whom he met through his charity for at-risk youth, the Second Mile. Matt met the man who would eventually adopt him through the same organization. Jerry Sandusky, who has five other adopted children, hasn’t been charged with abusing his son. (AP)

The nine people selected later this year as China’s top leaders will largely determine if the country’s authoritarian political system yields to demands for change. Pushing them will be a growing grassroots army of microbloggers, who are demanding more accountability and gradually pressing the boundaries of freedom in this tightly controlled country. These online activists are far from revolutionary. Many are children of Communist Party officials. They are patriots who love China but want its institutions to work better and on behalf of the people. The best known — such as scholar Yu Jianrong, whose microblog tries to connect begging street children with their parents — have more than a million followers, and they face ever-changing censorship rules and death threats. Well-known journalist and microblogger Wang Xiaoshan, 45, said he worries about his safety. “I know how this countr y works,” he said. “I’m not afraid of
jail. I’m afraid of torture.” As with Twitter, microblogs have a 140-character limit. But in Chinese, where each character is a separate word, 140 characters is enough for a lengthy discourse.
The number of Internet users in China, according to government data. There also are about 250 million users of the Twitterlike microblogging sites. (AP)
The microblogs have forced Beijing to become more attuned to public opinion and have obliterated the Communist Party’s traditional control over the flow of information. But no one expects the Internet to fashion any dramatic reform of the system. Already, there have been efforts to rein in microblogs. “The tools have changed,” Wang said. “People can acquire better information faster, and from different sources.” But, he added, “If the government senses it is a threat, they will shut it down.” KEITH B. Rights activists feared the new powers essentially reproduced the country’s hated emergency law, which had expired just two weeks earlier after more than 30 years. Love Is Just A Phone Away Are our relationships suffering as we grow more attached to our phones?
J^[;lebkj_ed E\EXi[ii_ed Our relationship with our cellphones goes through a “life cycle, says James Katz, the communication department chairman at Rutgers University. When we’re young, our connection to our cellphones gains in strength, reaching a height during our teenage years, when, Katz says, the relationship is “quite intense. In college, that relationship “starts to ratchet down. We ramp back up again in our 40s, as we begin to cope with growing families and the need for greater coordination. (T WP)
J^[f[hY[dj# W][e\f[efb[ that
would rather give up sex than go for a weekend without an iPhone, according to a study by the gadget service Gazelle.
Your dinner companion is fantastic, so you excuse yourself to “use the restroomâ€? and, once the door is locked, proceed to send three emails, four texts and a tweet about how great the date is going. When you return to the table, you catch your date immersed in his phone, too. You sit down, expecting him to look up. Instead, your phone buzzes and you look down: It’s a push alert from Facebook. You’ve just been tagged “in a relationshipâ€? with ... your dinner date. Is this an over-the-top scenario, or do we too often ďŹ nd ourselves managing a relationship on a phone rather than enjoying the actual relationship? How phones affect
Edj^[IjkZo A newly released study by Gazelle surveyed 1,000 people on their connection with their cellphones, and here are some of the findings:
of people said they wouldn’t be able to live without an iPhone, versus 1 percent of people saying Facebook.
of people say they “always or “almost always use their phone during social gatherings such as meals or parties.
of people say that they’ve used their phone in the bathroom before.
relationships and what our dependence on mobile technology reveals about us moved somewhat beyond casual talk and academic studies when gadget service Gazelle surveyed 1,000 customers and found that 15 percent would rather give up sex than go a weekend without an iPhone. Less alarmingly, 25 percent said they “almost alwaysâ€? use their iPhone in social settings. If you think individuals’ relationships with their phones is superďŹ cial, think again. Apple sales employees are trained to ask permission before touching a customer’s iPhone, according to a report in The New York Times. The implication is clear: The phone is to be treated like a customer’s appendage. “People view them as an extension of not only their physical selves, but their
psychological selves,â€? says James Katz, chairman of the Department of Communication at Rutgers University. “When things happen to the cellphone it’s almost visceral,â€? Katz says. “It’s almost happening to them.â€? But, when it comes to mobile technology, it doesn’t mold our lives as much as we tend to mold it, says Gian Gonzaga of eHarmony. And that has meant changes to fundamental relationship dynamics. Getting back to that Gazelle survey, Gonzaga has a question for those who would give up sex before going a weekend without an iPhone: “Who’s in your life that you’re having sex with?â€? That’s assuming there is anyone special, considering, as Whitney Casey of Match.com points out, “you can get sex from your iPhone.â€? But the way the survey is structured goes a long way toward the nature of the responses. “When you ask it more speciďŹ c to the actual human aspect of it,â€? Casey says, “it makes it far more of a stretch to say that you would ever give your phone up for that. “We all say we cannot live without our phones,â€? Casey says, “until we do.â€? So, will we hit a tipping point and turn off our phones entirely, realizing we’re missing out on something more essential — something more human? Don’t bet on it, Katz says. “I don’t foresee people deciding we’re going to give up our communicating devices en masse,â€? he says. “And I think those people who continue to call for media-free weekends will continue to be wolves howling at the moon.â€? Capitals Haul in Oates Former team captain is tapped to replace Hunter as head coach
When the Capitals traded Dale Hunter in 1999, Adam Oates — also a member of the 1997-98 team that reached the Stanley Cup finals — was named the team captain. Now, Oates is replacing Hunter, below, again — as coach. Hunter is credited for adding toughness to the squad in his short stint. Under Hunter, the Caps beat the Boston Bruins in a Game 7 before losing to the New York Rangers in the second round.
Once again, a Capitals leadership baton is passed from Dale Hunter to Adam Oates. More than a decade after Oates followed Hunter as captain, a similar transition happened Tuesday when Oates was hired as the Capitals coach. Except for one major exception: The one happened to fall on the same day Oates was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Adam Oates served as an assistant coach for the New Jersey Devils last season.
Devils in 2010. He was part of the staff that helped lead the Devils to this year’s Stanley Cup finals, which they lost to the Los Angeles Kings. His most formidable task will be to develop a playing style that best suits a Capitals roster brimming with talent and can also succeed in the playoffs. Led by Alex
Ovechkin, Washington won four consecutive Southeast Division titles under offensive-minded coach Bruce Boudreau but couldn’t advance beyond the second round of the postseason. Boudreau was fired in November after an early season slump and was replaced by the defense-first Hunter. Hunter eventually rallied
the players enough to get them back in the playoffs but couldn’t push them to the conference finals. Oates played in the NHL from 1985-2004, appearing in 1,337 games while scoring 341 goals with 1,079 assists for Detroit, St. Louis, Boston, Washington, Philadelphia, Anaheim and Edmonton. Only Wayne Gretzky, Bobby Orr and Mario Lemieux have averaged more assists-per-game than Oates in the NHL history, and only Gretzky (662) had more assists than Oates (636) during the 1990s. Oates is the fifth consecutive first-time NHL head coach hired by general manager George McPhee during McPhee’s 15 years with the Capitals, following Bruce Cassidy, Glen Hanlon, Boudreau and Hunter. “Adam was a highly intelligent player in the NHL for 19 seasons,” McPhee said in a statement released by the club. “He has been an assistant coach in our conference for the past three seasons and is prepared to lead our club as head coach.” JOSEPH WHITE (AP)

Even as he was joining Joe Sakic, Mats Sundin and Pavel Bure in the Hall, Oates joined Washington six weeks after Hunter’s abrupt resignation. Hunter led the team to the second round of the playoffs as a midseason replacement before deciding he would rather be at home with his family, his farm and the junior club he owns in Canada. So next up is Oates, 49, who played 19 seasons as a center in the NHL, including parts of six seasons with the Capitals from 1996-2002. His 290 assists rank 10th in team history, and he and Hunter were part of the 1997-98 team that made the only Stanley Cup finals appearance to date in franchise history. Oates, who will be formally introduced at a news conference Wednesday, has spent the past three seasons as an NHL assistant, first with the Tampa Bay Lightning before moving to the New Jersey

Griffin said his situation, which coincided with the league’s four-day rookie symposium, is a perfect cautionary tale for young players transitioning into the pros. This week, the NFC’s rookies heard from such players as Michael Vick and Adam “Pacman” Jones about their off-thefield problems. “It’s something I knew was coming,” Griffin said, “and when you hear those guys talk about being careful and keep your circle real small — all those things come back to you when you hear about stuff like this. 9ebb[<eejXWbb College football will finally have a playoff. Come 2014, the BCS is dead. A committee of university presidents on Tuesday approved the BCS commissioners’ plan for a four-team playoff to start in the 2014 season. The move completes a six-month process in which the commissioners have been working on a new way to determine a college football champion. Instead of simply matching the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the country in a championship game after the regular season, the way the Bowl Championship Series has done since 1998, the new format will create a pair of national semifinals. No. 1 will play No. 4, No. 2 will play No. 3. The winners will advance the national championship game. The teams will be selected by a committee, similar to the way the NCAA basketball tournament field is set. There are still some details to work out, but all the decision-makers are on board. (AP)

The Minnesota Timberwolves were in the market for a capable perimeter shooter, ideally a veteran with experience in coach Rick Adelman’s system to help balance a frontcourtheavy roster. The Houston Rockets could be looking for something much, much bigger. The teams made a move to address both needs just two days before the NBA draft: The Timberwolves have acquired swingman Chase Budinger from the Rockets in exchange for the 18th overall pick in the draft, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press on Tuesday. The Rockets now have the 14th, 16th and 18th picks and could make a play to trade for Orlando center Dwight Howard. (AP)

No Laughing Matter I knew things weren’t going well for Riot Act Comedy Theater when I showed up an hour before showtime to see Ali Wong two weeks ago. For 15 minutes, my girlfriend and I were the only people in the building who didn’t work there. The room would eventually fill in, but it wasn’t close to a sellout. And if Riot Act was to continue surviving, sellouts were what it needed — if not more. “The business model wasn’t working out,” says Peter Bayne, the venue’s general 8oHkZ_ manager. So it’s with =h[[dX[h] much disappointment, Bayne says, that Riot Act will close Saturday, less than a year after opening. It will reopen July 9 as Penn Social. The rebranding will transform the Penn Quarter space from comedy theater to — essentially — a bar. The stage and open-mic night are sticking around, but the showroom will now host DJs, bands, karaoke and dancing. Does this mean Washington and comedy don’t mix? Not at all. Bayne says comedy shows sold well, and comics wanted to play there. (Also of note: DC Improv is celebrating its 20th birthday this summer, so it’s not like D.C. doesn’t have a sense of humor.) The problem: When there was no comedy at Riot Act, there was no one there. And that’s just bad for business. For more of Rudi’s thoughts, follow him on Twitter: @rudigreenberg.
Maroon 5 has become nothing more than a trend-chasing pop act on ‘Overexposed’ 7bXkcH[l_[m Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine’s gig as a coach on “The Voice” has been the career equivalent of the adrenaline shot that Uma Thurman’s character got in “Pulp Fiction.” Without it, he never would have made “Moves Like Jagger,” his guiltiest-of-guiltypleasures collaboration with co-worker Christina Aguilera,
which sent the band’s moribund career into orbit. Maroon 5’s previous album, 2010’s “Hands All Over,” was just a modest hit. With its latest, “Overexposed,” the band seems determined not to repeat the experience. With the help of a coven of high-priced producers (Wik ipedia lists at least 18, including famed Britney Spears/ Usher hitmaker Max Martin and someone nicknamed Mailbox), Maroon 5 has (d)evolved from a convincing simulacrum of a soulpop band to a trend-chasing dancepop outfit. What took it so long? “Overexposed” is a hit-seeking
missile that doesn’t just slaughter Maroon 5’s reputation for sincerity (which was pretty nonexistent anyway), it festoons its corpse with glitter, hairspray and Hello Kitty stickers. It seems more like a collaboration between Swedish hitmakers and AutoTune than between Levine and members of his band, who apparently exist, but it’s a small price to pay. There are forays into clubby reggae (“One
More Night”) and retro funk (“Doin’ Dirt”), and a Wiz Khalifa collaboration (“Payphone”) that’s as implausible as it is addictive. It’s shiny and ridiculously pleasurable, which is different than saying it’s good. If “Overexposed” suffers at all, it’s on the low end: Levine, who has the voice Justin Timberlake wishes he had, was once capable of feigning great emotion. But for these minor variations on themes such as “A supermodel broke my heart,” or “It’s just not working out, supermodel,” it’s all he can do to fake it. ALLISON STEWART (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Major delays beyond a passenger’s control lead to missed flights Jeff Emerson missed his flight from Minneapolis to Washington last month. He didn’t make his connection to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and didn’t arrive as scheduled in Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, where he was supposed to start work as a summer volunteer. The story of Emerson’s delay is fascinating — maybe a little infuriating, too — for anyone who’s flying this summer, particularly internationally. It raises an important question about who 8o 9^h_ijef^[h takes responsibili;bb_ejj ty for delays that are beyond a passenger’s control. Emerson is a student at Luther College, a private school in Iowa. Through Orbitz, he’d booked a oneway ticket from Minneapolis to Tanzania via United Airlines and Ethiopian Airlines. The ticket was issued by Ethiopian, which means that it set the fare rules. You can probably guess what happened next: An agent pulled Emerson aside and questioned him, causing him to miss his flight. “The agent could not remove me from a 24-hour no-fly list with the TSA,” Emerson says. Emerson tried to rebook his ticket for the next day, but United, the carrier on the Minneapolis-Washington leg of the trip, couldn’t help him, because it didn’t own the ticket. He needed to contact Ethiopian. And that airline wouldn’t simply let him board the next flight for Addis Ababa. It wanted him to pay another $1,640 for a new ticket. He’d paid $1,082 for his original ticket. Almost a full week later, he arrived in Tanzania, after rebooking and paying about $200 more than his original fare. But he found
Airlines can be reluctant or unwilling to help passengers who miss flights.
the overall experience upsetting. Shouldn’t airlines be required to help a passenger who’s left behind because of a security delay? Department of Transportation spokesman Bill Mosley says that technically, Ethiopian and United acted correctly. “Since the missed flight was not the carrier’s fault, DOT rules would not require the carrier to reschedule the passenger at no additional charge,” he says. But Emerson’s long journey to Africa raises a broader issue: For years, airlines have invoked “reasons beyond our control” as an excuse to deny passengers essentials such as a hotel room when a flight is held up because of weather, or a meal when air traffic control keeps a plane on the ground over lunch. Passengers are disappointed but generally understanding. When the tables are turned, however, and passengers miss a f light for reasons beyond their control, airlines are reluctant or unwilling to be accommodating. It’s difficult to regulate an entire industry into seeing things from the customer’s perspective. But should that stop us from trying? (THE WASHINGTON POST )

“This just posted on the Oreo Facebook fan page. Of course, this immediately leads to speculation that One Million Moms (actually more like 47,820, the number of likes they have on their Facebook page) will call for a boycott of the tasty treat. Except they are already boycotting the product (they didn’t like the mom saying “Shut the front door” in a TV commercial). And of course this leads to a petition that Oreo to start making this a real product.” — Charlie Watson at GLAAFORUM.ORG is tired of the predictable cycle surrounding an Oreo ad that features rainbow-colored cream filling in one of its cookies.

CANCER (June 21-July 22) You must be ready to play at your highest level today, or you’re sure to be bested by a phenom who is new on the scene. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Your memories provide you with the information you need to accomplish the unexpected. Someone who knows you well offers timely help. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You may not find it easy to ask for what you need at this time; take care that you’re not going without simply to avoid temporary discomfort. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) What you are seeking at this time may not be far from where you are right now, so all it takes is a little careful observation. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) A friend introduces you to something new — and you will wonder, in very little time, how you ever got along without it!
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Your powers of observation will reveal much to you that is hidden from others — and this will give you a distinct advantage. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) It may be time to alter your strategy slightly when it comes to dealing with a competitor. He or she may be on to you. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) It’s important for you to relate to someone else on his or her terms — at least for the time being. You have a knack for communication.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You may find yourself relying on others more than usual today, but they have something to offer you. Don’t be proud! GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You’ll discover something about yourself that others may have already known for quite some time. This surprise opens doors — eventually.
