Days before Jerry Sandusky was convicted, an email was sent to alumni: “We are ONE TEAM. Join us,” with a link for purchasing football game tickets. The Nittany Lions open their season Sept. 1, and for legions of PSU fans, it can’t come fast enough. “It’s going to take time for people to think about Penn State and Penn State football without thinking about the Jerry Sandusky scandal,” said former Penn State quarterback Todd Blackledge. 8[bb[\edj["FW$ Jerry Sandusky’s lawyers said they tried to quit at the start of jury selection in his child sex abuse trial because they weren’t given enough time to prepare, raising an argument on the trial’s speed that could become the thrust of an appeal. Meanwhile, one of the jurors who convicted Sandusky of 45 child sex abuse counts said Saturday he was swayed by the “very convincing” testimony of eight accusers who said the retired Penn State assistant football coach molested them for years. “It’s hard to judge character on the stand, because you don’t know these kids,” juror Joshua Harper told NBC’s “Today” show. “But most were very credible — I would say all.” A day after jurors in the two-week trial convicted Sandusky of 45 of the 48 counts against him, his lawyers disclosed Saturday they felt too unprepared to adequately defend him because of how quickly the case was brought to trial. Experts have said the seven months between Sandusky’s November arrest and trial was fastpaced by Pennsylvania standards. “We told the trial court, the Superior Court and the Supreme Court

Sandusky’s sentencing is expected to occur in about three months; an exact date hasn’t been set. Egyptians Cheer Islamist’s Win President-elect looks to unify country and build its democracy
Mohammed Morsi, 60, rose through the ranks of the Muslim Brotherhood as a lackluster but effective foot soldier. The U.S.-trained engineer is an enigma: Relatively cosmopolitan and educated, he struggles to communicate in public and betrays agrarian roots in a way that secular elites find off-putting. Morsi will now have a chance to prove his mettle by standing up to the interim ruling generals. (AP)
9W_he Islamist Mohammed Morsi was declared the winner Sunday in Egypt’s first free presidential election in history, closing the tumultuous first phase of a democratic transition and opening a new struggle with the military rulers who recently stripped the presidency of most of its powers. In Tahrir Square, the birthplace of the uprising that ousted autocratic President Hosni Mubarak, joyous supporters of Morsi’s Muslim Brotherhood wept and knelt in
prayer Sunday when they heard the announcement. They danced and set off fireworks in celebrations not seen in the square since Mubarak’s ouster on Feb. 11, 2011. Many are looking now to see whether Morsi will try to take on the military and wrestle back the powers they took from his office.
Thousands vowed to remain in Tahrir to demand that the ruling generals reverse their decision. In his first televised speech, the 60-year old U.S.-trained engineer called on Egyptians to unite and tried to reassure minority Christians, who mostly backed Morsi’s rival Ahmed Shafiq because they

NATO Sets Talks on Turkey, Syria 7daWhW"Jkha[o
8WYaijeho$$$ The Turkish jet downed Friday was on a training flight to test Turkey’s radar capabilities, not spying on Syria, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said. He said the plane mistakenly strayed into Syrian airspace, but was warned to leave by Turkish authorities and was inside international airspace when it was shot down. Syria insisted Saturday that the shooting was “not an attack” and that the aircraft had violated its airspace. Turkey says Syria didn’t warn the Turkish plane. Its two pilots remained missing Sunday. “open and grave violation of international law” that would justify retaliation. Despite some opposition leaders’ calls for Western military intervention in Syria, the U.S. and allies have been hesitant to get involved in what could prove a protracted conflict, preferring the diplo-
matic route. Syrian allies Russia and China have shielded Syria from U.N. sanctions and stridently oppose any military intervention. But it’s unlikely the downing of the jet will change those calculations, despite Ankara’s appeal for the NATO meeting. (AP)
NATO will hold emergency talks on Tuesday to discuss Syria’s downing of a Turkish jet fighter, but the alliance is not expected to take military action, even if it confirms Turkey’s claim that the unarmed plane was attacked in international airspace. The incident has further raised regional tensions over the conflict in Syria, where about 40 people were reported killed Sunday in new clashes. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton sharply criticized Syria on Sunday for downing the Turkish plane, which Turkey’s Foreign Ministry called an

Also on Friday, Carl Ziethaml, the university dean appointed as Sullivan’s interim replacement, said he won’t do anything related to the job until after the board meeting. 9el[hIjeho “My favorite among the press pieces wisely observed: ‘At the Supreme Court ... those who know don’t talk, and those who talk don’t know,’” she said. The justices, of course, know, having officially voted on the results the same week they heard arguments in March. But they are not the only ones in the loop: Each of the nine justices
Quiet in the Court
ÇJ^[ob_a[ _d\ehcWj_edje cel[ibemboWdZ Z[b_X[hWj[bo$È — STEPHEN MILLER, A LAWYER WHO CLERKED FOR JUSTICE ANTONIN SCALIA,
DISCUSSING THE SUPREME COURT.
Members of the media have been setting up outside the Supreme Court regularly, awaiting the justices’ ruling on the health care overhaul. The decision is expected by Friday.
I_b[dY[?iA[o As the health care law ruling looms, are warned from day one justices uphold their culture of secrecy Clerks not to reveal anything, said lawMWi^_d]jed It’s the biggest secret in a city known for not keeping them. The nine Supreme Court justices and more than three dozen other people have kept quiet for almost three months about how the high court is going to rule on the constitutionality of President Obama’s health care overhaul. This is information that could move markets, turn economies and greatly affect this fall’s national elections, including the presidential contest between Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney. But unlike the Congress and the executive branch, which seem to leak information willynilly, the Supreme Court, from the chief justice down to the lowliest clerk, appears to truly value silence when it comes to upcoming court opinions. No one talks, and that’s the way
they like it. Contrast this with the rest of the government, which couldn’t keep secret Obama’s role in supervising an unprecedented U.S. cyberattack on Iran’s nuclear facilities or the existence of a double agent inside al-Qaeda’s Yemen branch who tipped the U.S. to a new design for a bomb to put on a jetliner. As Republicans air their suspicion that the leaks might be deliberate to enhance the Obama administration’s stature, Attorney
yer Stephen Miller, who clerked for Justice Antonin Scalia. In addition to losing the job, one of the most sought positions for up-and-coming lawyers, any clerk caught revealing information would be ostracized, he said. No law firm would take a chance on a lawyer who can’t keep quiet, he said, and if the leaking clerk isn’t caught, the entire group would have that stigma, leading to strong peer pressure to stay silent. (AP)
General Eric Holder has appointed two U.S. attorneys to investigate those two disclosures and probably additional recent national security leaks. Because far more people know about such secret national security operations, those investigators must examine hundreds, even thousands, of federal workers who might have known at least some guarded information. The Supreme Court is expected to rule on the law in the upcoming week or so. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg on June 15 noted a steady stream of “rumors and fifth-hand accounts” in the media about what the high court was likely to do.
has four clerks who know not only how their justice voted but also how the other justices stand because these clerks help craft the majority opinions and dissents. Unlike our presidents, who need positive publicity if they are to win re-election, the justices have lifetime appointments and don’t need favorable publicity to keep their jobs. The court’s reputation means there have been no special warnings from the justices not to spill the beans on the health care decision. It’s not that the ruling isn’t important. It’s that clerks, secretaries, janitors and the other staffers know they are not supposed to talk about anything the court does until the official announcement. That doesn’t mean that the court’s always been perfect at withholding information until its formal release. For example, the court inadvertently posted opinions and orders on its website about a half hour too soon in December. (AP)
J_c[b_d[0>[Wbj^9Wh[El[h^Wkb The Supreme Court’s upcoming ruling on President Obama’s health care law comes afterdecades of debate over government’s role in medical care. A look at the issue over the past 20 years:
'//) First lady Hillary Rodham Clinton spearheads work on a plan for universal coverage. It requires businesses to cover workers and mandates that everyone have health insurance, but it dies in the Senate.
(&&) President George W. Bush persuades Congress to add prescription drug coverage to Medicare in a major expansion of the program for older people.
(&&. Hillary Rodham Clinton, seeking the Democratic presidential nomination, calls for a broad health care plan. Obama wins with a less comprehensive plan.
(&&/ Obama and Congress spend a year ironing out a law that requires most companies to cover workers and mandates that everyone have coverage or pay a fine.
(&'& With no Republican support, Congress passes the measure, designed to extend health care coverage to more than 30 million uninsured people. (AP)

The Nationals were locked in another tight, low-scoring game when the most unusual thing happened: Their bullpen let the lead slip away. Sean Burnett gave up two-run homer to Matt Wieters in the eighth inning, and the Nationals lost 2-1 to the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday in the deciding game of this tense interleague series. Ryan Zimmerman, who received a cortisone shot in his sore right shoulder before the game, gave Washington a 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the third inning. The score stayed that way until the eighth, when the usually reliable Burnett yielded a leadoff single to Adam Jones before Wieters connected on an 0-1 pitch. “I tried to go with my strength and left the ball out over the plate,” Burnett said. “He’s a good hitter and made me pay for it.” Burnett came in with a 1.04 ERA and had kept the opposition scoreless in 28 of 31 appearances. Washington dropped to 34-3 when leading after seven innings and 14-12 in one-run games. “We play a lot of close games and our bullpen expects to get the job done in those situations,” Burnett said. “Today I let one slip away.” Each team scored five runs in the series. Baltimore won the opener 2-1, then lost 3-1 before rallying to win the finale. “I thought we played a good series but came out on the losing end,” Washington’s Ian Desmond said. “No one in here is searching for any confidence.” After Wieters gave Baltimore the lead, he sealed the victory in the ninth. With one out, Jim John-
Ian Desmond, left, walks off the field after being thrown out when trying to steal second base on the last play of Sunday’s game.
Ijeh[dÊiD[mHeb[ Injury has claimed all of Nationals reliever Drew Storen’s season so far. Now the strong performance of his close friend, Tyler Clippard, as the team’s closer has cost him his job. On Saturday, manager Davey Johnson threw Clippard his support. Storen said Clippard has performed well and earned Johnson’s support, but last year’s closer remains confident. “I’m going to need to get my feet wet and I think it’d good for the acclimation of it,” said Storen, who saved 43 games last year. “In the end, I have all the confidence in the world that I can come back and close games.” (T WP)

son struck out Danny Espinosa and Wieters threw out Desmond attempting to steal second base. “Any out you can get, especially the 27th out, is huge,” Wieters said. Orioles manager Buck Showalter considered resting his workhorse catcher, who also played Saturday night, then decided against it. The Orioles finished 11-7 in interleague play and won five of six series. Pedro Strop (4-2) got the final out in the eighth for Baltimore and
Johnson worked the ninth for his 22nd save. Making his first start for the Nationals since May 25, Ross Detwiler allowed four hits and walked two in five innings. In his previous start against Baltimore on May 19, the left-hander gave up six runs. But that was at a point in the season when the Orioles scored 32 runs over a six-game span. Jake Arrieta gave up one run and five hits in six innings, and it still took an unlikely comeback by the Orioles for him to avoid becoming the first 10-game loser in the big leagues this season. Zimmerman snapped a 5-for49 slump and gave Washington the lead with a two-out single that scored Jhonatan Solano. Zimmerman, who went 2 for 4, hopes the cortisone shot will help. “We just decided that would give me a chance to continue to play and not miss any more time,” he said. “It took that pain and pressure away from me that has been bothering me for a while. It’s a test case.” DAVID GINSBURG (AP)

Italy celebrates after advancing to the Euro 2012 semifinals with its win on Sunday.
Italians Advance On Penalty Kicks Victory sets up game against Germany in Euro 2012 semifinals IeYY[h Alessandro Diamanti scored the decisive penalty kick Sunday to give Italy a 4-2 shootout win over England and a spot in the European Championship semifinals. Ashley Young hit the crossbar with England’s third, and Ashley Cole’s attempt was then saved by Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon diving to his left. Mario Balotelli, Andrea Pirlo and Antonio Nocerino also scored for Italy. Steven Gerrard and Wayne Rooney scored England’s penalties. Italy will next play Germany in the semifinals on Thursday in Warsaw, Poland. For England, it was yet another exit from a major tournament
in the quarterfinals after a penalty shootout. England lost to Portugal in the same manner at Euro 2004 and the 2006 World Cup. Italy dominated the match, which ended 0-0 after 120 minutes of play.
& & The Italians twice hit the post, but were also let down by poor composure in front of goal. Diamanti clipped the post with a curling cross in the 101st minute, and swept a clear shot wide. Nocerino thought he had scored from Diamanti’s cross in the 115th but was offside. The first scoreless match at Euro 2012 was neither dull nor lacking good football. Italy’s attacking desire and creativity under coach Cesare Prandelli had playmaker Andrea Pirlo at its heart. Italy had 35 attempts on goal, compared to only nine for England. (AP)

LeBron James and Kevin Durant were together from the delayed start until the quick finish of this shortened NBA season, sharing a lengthy embrace moments after James’ championship chase was finally complete. And in the first week of July, they will be on the same side for the Olympic training camp in Las Vegas before heading to London later in the month. The Heat and Oklahoma City Thunder are likely to be back here again, perhaps as soon as next season, when James gets to see how it feels to defend a title and Durant inherits his role as the best player without one. “This won’t be the last time we see them in the finals,” James said of the Oklahoma City Thunder. As the preschool-age market continues to grow, child psychology and industry experts are paying close attention to the increased TV-viewing habits of the pint-size audience. More higher-quality options for kids are welcome, but there are growing worries about just how much TV preschoolers are watching. It’s tricky for networks to find that spot between making shows that kids crave but also making them educational and healthy. Michael Brody, chairman of the Media Committee of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, says he’s seen the focus of children’s TV channels narrow in on younger and younger ages as parents become more

While the TV industry frets about ratings drops and reports emerge on declines in traditional TV viewing, there’s one market that executives are zeroing in on. And it’s one more interested in naptime and snacks than Nielsen ratings. Turns out, preschoolers are zoning out in front of their favorite TV show more than ever. And to keep up with this lucrative tot market, networks are revamping and rearranging offerings to reel in viewers — and advertisers. A 2011 report by the Joan Ganz Cooney Center at Sesame Workshop found that TV-watching by preschoolers climbed to an average of 3½ hours a day, the highest since the Sesame Work-
shop began tracking the statistic eight years ago. “Even as technology evolves and young children increasingly turn to games and mobile media,” the study notes, “they still love television best.” That’s good news for executives who dream up and produce kids programming, especially now as two big players launch new initiatives targeting these young viewers. This spring, Disney debuted the Disney Junior network, featuring seven-day, 24-hour programming aimed at kids ages 2 to 5. And NBC, in a partnership with PBS’s Kids Sprout channel, will debut a block of Saturdaymorning shows in July called “NBC

rushed and plop the kids down in front of that always-effective babysitter. “It’s a very formative age — we form a lot of habits that affect us later in life,” says Kelly O’Keefe, a professor at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Brandcenter, a graduate advertising program. “That’s precisely the reason advertisers are starting to jump into this category.” Brody’s concern is that as children get so wrapped up and invested in so many shows and the characters they see on screen — which they ask Mom and Dad to buy stuffed-animal replicas of — their imagination, which is crucial at an early age, will be replaced. “There’s three or four big companies that cater to children’s media,” Brody says. “A nd so, t he stories of childhood are in fewer hands.” EMILY YAHR (THE WASHINGTON POST )
>emCkY^JL_iJeeCkY^5 For children older than 2, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no more than one to two hours of nonviolent educational programming per day, supervised by an adult. “I often say, ‘All television is educational,’” says Dimitri Christakis, a member of the executive committee of the AAP Council on Communications and Media. “The real question is: What is it teaching?” For children in the 2-to-5 age range, certain shows can teach kindergarten readiness skills: patience, being kind to others and learning to share. Thus, Christakis says, television can have a positive impact. (T WP)

CANCER (June 21-July 22) You will have to rely on your stores of inner strength today. Give yourself time to adjust to a quickly changing situation. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You seem to be deciding between two valid, though quite different, options at this time. Today, you’ll have to consider a third. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You don’t want your plans to be derailed by someone who is only behaving instinctively. Take all necessary precautions. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You may have to face more than the weather today as you make plans for a journey of some length. What seems inevitable may not be.
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Your mood is likely to be affected today by events that are beyond your control and that are not fully understood by you or others. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) The pressure is likely to be relieved considerably as you complete one or two more steps of a process that has been ongoing. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You’ve made a few choices lately that have not panned out as you had hoped, but adjustments you make today can improve the situation. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You may have been accused of something you didn’t do — but it would be a mistake to let yourself react in a way that could be misinterpreted.
