As the FBI chased leads on two continents, Boston mob boss James “Whitey” Bulger lived nearly all of his 16 years on the lam in this quiet seaside city, passing himself off as just another elderly retiree, albeit one who kept a .357 Magnum and more than 100 rounds of ammunition in his modest apartment. Bulger — the FBI’s most-wanted man and a feared underworld figure linked to 19 murders — was captured Wednesday after one of the biggest manhunts in U.S. history. His undoing may have been his impeccably groomed girlfriend. Earlier this week, after years of frustration, the FBI put out a series of daytime TV announcements with photos of Bulger’s blond-haired livein companion, Catherine Greig. The announcements pointed out that Greig was known to frequent beauty salons and have her teeth cleaned once a month.

Two days later, the campaign produced a tip that led agents to the two-bedroom apartment three blocks from the Pacific Ocean where Bulger, 81, and Greig, 60, lived, authorities said. The FBI would not give any details about the tip. The boss of South Boston’s vicious Winter Hill Gang — a man who authorities say would not hesitate to shoot someone between the eyes — was lured outside the building and captured without resis-

tance. Greig was also arrested. Neighbors were stunned to learn they had been living in the same building as the man who was the model for Jack Nicholson’s ruthless crime boss in the 2006 Martin Scorsese movie “The Departed.” On Thursday afternoon, Bulger appeared with his girlfriend in federal court in Los Catherine Greig, Angeles and was James Bulger’s ordered returned girlfriend, lived to Massachusetts with Bulger in to face charges California. Stephen Johnson said he wasn’t surprised that Bulger and Greig stayed put in California. “It’s very hard to be living on the lam, and when you’re that age, you probably want to enjoy it,” he said. U.S., Allies to Tap Oil Reserves Release of 60M crude barrels meant to ease strain on economy D[mOeha The United States and other nations that depend on oil imports said Thursday they will release and sell 60 million barrels of crude from emergency stocks in an effort to ease the strain high oil prices are putting on the global economy. The release by the International Energy Agency, a group of more than two dozen countries, covers only what the world uses roughly

every 16 hours. But it was enough to send oil prices lower, at least for the moment. In addition to helping the struggling economies of the U.S. and Europe, analysts said the move was meant as a rebuke to OPEC, which has refused to increase oil production to bring down prices. It will be the largest sale of crude ever from world strategic reserves and only the third since the IEA was formed in 1974 after the Arab oil embargo. The IEA released oil in 2005 after Hurricane Katrina, and in 1990 and 1991 after Iraq invaded Kuwait. Half the oil will come from

reserves in the U.S. Refiners who turn crude into gasoline will be able to bid on the extra oil and have it shipped to them from the salt caverns along the Gulf Coast. The IEA said high oil demand and shortfalls of oil production

caused by unrest in the Middle East and North Africa threatened to “undermine the fragile global economic recovery.” The uprising in Libya has taken 1.5 million barrels of oil per day off of the market — half a million barrels less than will be released each day by the IEA. The price of oil rose to nearly $114 per barrel at the end of April, a level not seen since the summer of 2008. Since then, however, oil prices had fallen considerably, and analysts questioned how much relief the move would provide the economy, and for how long. CHRIS K AHN

Europe Embraces Obama’s Afghan Plan Allies outline goals for withdrawals as Afghanistan steps up @WbWbWXWZ"7\]^Wd_ijWd U.S. Ambassador Karl Eikenberry spent Thursday in eastern Afghanistan, hoping to reassure local officials, tribal elders and shopkeepers that President Obama’s announced troop withdrawal “does not mean the United States is abandoning Afghanistan.” “For nine years, the international community has been in front. Though Afghan police and soldiers are expected to take full responsibility for security in the country by 2014, he said, “if you still want our support, we will still be here to help.” America’s European allies welcomed the drawdown announcement and also made withdrawal promises Thursday. But the reaction of Afghan President Hamid Karzai’s political opponents and the Taliban ranged from skepticism to disdain. President Nicolas Sarkozy said the approximately 4,000 French troops in Afghanistan would engage in a “phased withdrawal” mirroring that of the U.S.

Four bombs ripped through Shiite neighborhoods in Baghdad Thursday evening, killing at least 40 people and injuring 82 others in the worst violence the capital has seen in months, Iraqi officials said. An American civilian aid specialist working to improve education in Iraq was killed in a separate attack. The first three bombs went off shortly after 7 p.m. One targeted a Shiite mosque, another exploded outside a market, and the third went off inside the market, police said. There was no immediate claim of responsibility. The violence underscored the fragile nature of the security gains in Iraq at a time when U.S. forces are preparing to withdraw by the end of this year. @eXJhW_d_d] Just about every intern in Washington has to get to know Metro. But most of them don’t need to learn it nearly as well as the 30 students who’ve landed 13-week gigs with the transportation agency this summer. “When I say I work at Metro, other interns say, ‘What do you mean? The Metro Metro?” says Jonathan Heppen, a 21-year-old who’s embedded with the government relations team for a second year. Perhaps t hey ’re conf used because they don’t realize that Metro needs more personnel than just drivers. Metro interns are spread out over 11 departments, and they learn about every aspect

of the people-moving business. “We have a lot of professions here,” says intern program manager Andrea Johnson, adding that the summer program is structured to create a pipeline for future employees. One of those might be Jefferson King, a grad student at Virginia Tech who’s working with Bus Technology Systems Support, helping iron out the kinks in programs like NextBus and Google Transit.

“It seemed like an opportunity to see how transit really works,” says King, a self-described “avid public transportation user” wherever he is. King is originally from Boston, which has one of the cheapest subway systems in the country, so the fares here gave him sticker shock. But it helps that the main perk of the internships — other than the fact that they’re paid — is that they come with an all-youcan-ride Metro pass. “We still have to pay for parking, though,” says Heppen, who admits he drives into work some days rather than deal with taking a bus to Grosvenor and hopping on the Red Line. It’s by riding the roads and rails, however, that they can put their newfound knowledge to use. Because 22-year-old Elizabeth Quintana is working with the Metro Transit Police Department, she sees all of the crime bulletins. “So I’m more aware,” she says, although she still occasionally uses her cell phone on the train despite a recent rise in electronics thefts. Her main summer assignment is creating a course on the dangers of social media for people who work in law enforcement. With her interest in the intersection of media and criminology, Quintana says she couldn’t imagine a better place to be. At Metro, she gets the chance to work with three separate jurisdictions — D.C., Maryland and Virginia. A nd w it h t his internship, she knows she’ll really be going places.

The FBI said Yonathan Melaku taped himself shouting “Allah Akbar” after a shooting.

At a news conference Thursday morning, prosecutors and the FBI declined to comment on the possible motivation in the shootings. “Today’s charges allege a pattern of violent behavior ... we believe his statements that he’s targeting military installations speak to his desire to engage in violent activity against the military,” U.S. Attorney Neil H. MacBride said. Federal officials said in court papers that between Oct. 16 and Nov. 2, Melaku fired shots at five military sites in the region. The shootings began Oct. 16 or early the next morning when shots were fired into the win-

dows of the National Museum of the Marine Corps at Triangle. The Pentagon was hit a few days later. A U.S. Marine recruiting center in Chantilly was hit Oct. 25. Then, a shooter fired again on the Marine Corps museum Oct. 28 and on Nov. 1 shot a window at a U.S. Coast Guard recruiting center in Woodbridge. “Its always disappointing when someone who wears this uniform gets in trouble with the law,” said Lt.. Col Chris Hughes, a spokesman for the Marines. “It’s heart-wrenching. The nature of the offenses is heart-wrenching to us all.” (THE WASHINGTON POST )

FWdZW#ced_kc Teams of panda fans are keeping a 24-hour-a-day watch on the National Zoo’s giant panda Mei Xiang to see whether she might give birth. Scientists at the zoo detected a rise in hormone levels in May that could indicate the panda may give birth or end a false pregnancy by early July. Mei Xiang was artificially inseminated twice in January. But it’s difficult to know whether a panda is pregnant or exhibiting signs of a false pregnancy. Zoo veterinarians have been trying to perform ultrasounds several times a week. (AP)

Dulce Guerrero kept quiet about being an illegal immigrant until earlier this year, when she became upset after a traffic stop that landed her mother in jail for two nights. The arrest came as Georgia’s lawmakers were crafting what would become one of the nation’s toughest immigration crackdowns, and Guerrero feared her mother would be deported. “I feel like that was my breaking point, when my mom was in jail,” said Guerrero, 18, who came to the U.S. from Mexico when she was 2. “I felt like, ‘Well, that’s it; it can’t get any worse than this.’” Guerrero, a recent high school graduate, first publicly announced her immigration status at a March protest. Now, under the tutelage of more experienced activists, themselves only a few years older, she’s organizing a rally on Tuesday at the Georgie Capitol. The highstakes movement of young illegal immigrants’ declaring that they’re “undocumented and unafraid” got a boost this week when journalist Jose Antonio Vargas revealed he’s been living in the country illegally. Efforts by young activists have ranged from rallies and letterwriting to sit-ins, with the aim of

Georgina Perez, 22, is an illegal immigrant who came to the U.S. from Mexico at age 2. She was arrested in Atlanta during a protest for immigration policy reform.

Young illegal immigrants step forward to call for U.S. policy reform

reforming U.S. policy for immigrants in their situation. Proponents of stricter immigration enforcement often concede that young people in this situation are among the most sympathetic cases but that legalizing them still raises problems. “Our own American young adult college grads are in dire straits in the job market … so what the DREAM Act does is adds potentially a million, 2 million more people to compete legally in that job market,” said Roy Beck, executive director of NumbersUSA, which pushes for tighter immigration control.

B[]Wb8Wjjb[i GEORGIA Earlier this year, Georgia passed a law that, among other things, authorizes law enforcement officers to check the immigration status of suspects who cannot provide identification and to detain illegal immigrants. It also makes it a felony to present false documents or information when applying for a job. Another section of the Georgia law set to be phased in starting in January will require many businesses to check the immigration status of new hires, similar to an Arizona law that was upheld by the Supreme Court recently.

ARIZONA A law with provisions allowing officials to check suspects’ immigration status has been blocked by a federal appeals court. Gov. Jan Brewer says she will appeal to the Supreme Court.

UTAH A federal judge has temporarily blocked an immigration law in Utah, citing similarities to the most controversial parts of Arizona’s law. A hearing on the law is set for mid-July. (AP)

7H[fehj[hWdZWd7ZleYWj[ Journalist Jose Antonio Vargas, 30, used an ABC News interview and a New York Times Magazine article to announce Wednesday that he is an illegal immigrant from the Philippines. Vargas discovered his uncertain standing as a teen and kept the secret while employed with a series of news organizations, including The Washington Post, where he shared in a Pulitzer Prize, and later the Huffington Post. He has started an advocacy group, Define American, to promote the DREAM Act, which would provide a path to legalization for young people brought to the U.S. illegally by their parents. (AP/ T WP)

There’s no guarantee that those who come forward will have to leave the U.S. right away. Some — such as Mandeep Chahal, an honors student at the University of California, Davis — have won at least temporary reprieves. Chahal, 20, campaigned on Facebook to avoid being sent back to India. Still, the threat of being forced out of the U.S. weighs on those who announce their illegal status. “I was super-nervous,” Georgina Perez said. “I had to do it because in order for students to come out, they need to see something; someone needs to set the example.” Perez, 22, was arrested after she and six young immigrants sat in an Atlanta intersection, blocking traffic. The hardest thing, she said, was when her mother apologized for putting her in a difficult situation. “It’s like you can’t really fully live your life here, and she knows that, and it breaks her heart,” Perez said, choking up. “I thank her for bringing me here. I told her, ‘Don’t ever say that again. Don’t apologize.’” K ATE BRUMBACK (AP)

;L;HOJ>?D= The U.S. won’t settle for anything less than its first World Cup title since 1999 Mec[dÊiIeYY[h The last time the United States won the women’s World Cup, Mia Hamm and Julie Foudy were still playing, Abby Wambach had just led Florida to the college title, and Alex Morgan was all of 10. That 1999 title is so far in the distance, in fact, that captain Christie Rampone is the only current U.S. player who was part of the watershed tournament. “It’s been way too long — 12 years — since we brought home that

7Jek]^=hekf Who the U.S. will face first in Germany. The U.S. beat NORTH KOREA 3-0 in group play in both 1999 and 2003. The teams tied 2-2 in 2007. Europe’s second-best team, SWEDEN has struggled so far this year with losses in five of its nine matches. COLOMBIA’S first trip to the Women’s World Cup is fueled by a core of young players.

trophy,” goalkeeper Hope Solo said. “Twelve years is a long time.” Ending that drought is the Americans’ sole objective at the World Cup, which begins Sunday and runs through July 17 in nine cities across Germany. One of the four top seeds, the U.S. plays its first group match Tuesday against North Korea in Dresden, then faces Colombia on July 2 in Sinsheim and Sweden on July 6 in Wolfsburg. Despite coming up short at the last two World Cups, the Americans haven’t exactly been in a slump. They’ve won the last two Olympic gold medals and begin the World Cup as the No. 1 team in the world. They have the world’s best goalkeeper in Solo and one of the most prolific scorers in Wambach.

Yet the Americans aren’t the juggernaut they once were, either. Part of that is a credit to other countries, many of whom are seeing the results of the additional resources they poured into their programs over the last decade. But the U.S. has also been uncharacteristically inconsistent of late, particularly during the last year. After going more than two years without a loss, the U.S. dropped three games in five months. The Americans were stunned in the semifinals of regional World Cup qualifying by Mexico, a team that drew once and lost 24 times in the previous 25 clashes, and which had to win a two-legged playoff with Italy just to get to Germany. The U.S. lost to Sweden in the Four Nations opener, though it did go on to win the tournament, and then was beaten by England for the first time since 1988. And now the Americans take a relatively inexperienced squad into the World Cup. Thirteen of the 21 players were part of the gold medal squad in Beijing, but only eight have played in a World Cup. “They just haven’t shown that normal consistency of excellence that the U.S. is known for,” said Tony DiCicco, the U.S. coach in 1999 who is now an analyst for ESPN. The men’s national soccer teams from the United States and Mexico have seemed to be on a crash course since the CONCACAF Gold Cup began. To the delight of most North American soccer fans, the region’s two giants persevered to reach the tournament’s final for the third consecutive time. Saturday’s meeting at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif., will be the culmination of the latest chapter in the storied rivalry between

the two nations. They’ve split their past two Gold Cup final meetings, with Mexico having the last laugh in 2009. In that match, a full-strength Mexico squad thrashed the United States — which brought a second-tier squad to the tournament — 5-0, at the old Giants Stadium in New Jersey. But two years earlier, the United States won on a tremendous volley from a distance by Benny Feilhaber, outlasting Mexico, 2-1, at Soldier Field in Chicago. For the United States to win, it will need to contain star Mexican forward Javier Hernandez. No one U.S. defender will stop the player known as “Chicharito,”

Javier Hernandez gets ample service. Mexico, while not as sharp in its past two matches, is the more explosive, and if its free-flowing attack gets into a rhythm, it could be a repeat of 2009 all over again. The USA will win if: It keeps Javier Hernandez under wraps; disrupts Mexico’s rhythm with an organized, physical defensive effort; and gets the best out of attacking standouts Landon Donovan and Clint Dempsey. ing him service into dangerous positions, because he’s as lethal a finisher as there is in the region — as seen with his tournament-high seven goals. As for the United States, it

remains to be seen what role star Landon Donovan will play. In the team’s semifinal victory over Panama on Wednesday, the U.S. star came off the bench for the second game in a row after starting every national-team game in which he had played for the past four years. He combined with surprise substitute Freddy Adu, who made his first national-team appearance in two years, to set up Clint Dempsey for the game-winning goal in the 77th minute of the 1-0 result. Panama had handed the Americans their first-ever loss in Gold Cup group play 11 days earlier. “We’ve said all along that this tournament is a marathon,” Donovan told reporters Wednesday. “You can’t get too caught up in one result. You have to keep getting better as the tournament goes on, and now we find ourselves in the final with a chance to win it.” AVI CREDITOR

United will face a tough task on Saturday in trying to slow down Houston Dynamo forward Will Bruin, left, who had his way with the D.C. defense, netting a hat trick in a 4-1 win on April 29 in Houston. The game is important because United trails the Dynamo by a point in the Eastern Conference standings. Matches like these could ultimately determine playoff positioning down the line. A.C.

Jeremy Richardson, sitting next to a salvaged metal railing in his Petworth condo, sought out a home that incorporated eco-friendly features and sustainable design.

For Jeremy Richardson, there’s not much separation between work and home. As a contractor at the Department of Energy’s Building Technologies Program (whose mission is to make buildings more energy-efficient), it’s practically a job requirement for Richardson to have a sustainable apartment. “The chance to live in a more energy-efficient space is one of the things that drove me” to move, says Richardson, 36, who moved into a condo containing repurposed materials in Petworth’s Solidago building in March. “It’s a passion of mine to live in ways that are gentler on the planet.” Built in 1917 with two units, the Solidago was renovated over the past two years to hold three condos. Half of the construction waste was recycled, saving 7 tons from becoming landfill fodder. The building earned a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) platinum certification, the highest level of eco-friendliness recognized by the U.S. Green Building Council. While LEED certification is an assurance that a home is gentle on the Earth, not all green elements of a home are so subtle (or official). Recycled and sustainable décor often comes in eye-catching, conversation-starting forms, and it’s become a trend as both a design element and a selling point. CONTINUED ON E2

The economy has contributed to the demand for salvaged, energy-efficient design elements, says Tim Campbell, a product manager at Metropolitan Regional Information Systems (MRIS.com), which runs the country’s largest real estate listing service and monitors market trends. Recently, he says, “everybody’s much more conscious of their energy bills and of their footprint on the environment.” Nadia Subaran, senior designer, co-founder and co-owner of Aidan Design architecture firm (4701 Sangamore Road, Suite 3, Bethesda; 301-320-8735, Aidandesign.com), would agree. Adding green materials to the home is “a part of every client conversation I have [now], whereas five years ago, it was maybe one in 10,” she says. “I think it’s due to greater social awareness. People are much more conscious of the choices they make. I think that everybody feels that they have, in their own small way, a power to influence or to affect by their choices.” There’s not much data on the effect of eco-friendly features on overall home values, largely because green technologies continue to evolve. However, houses with perks such as LEED certification, recycled design elements and Energy Star appliances tend to sell for more money than non-green homes, according to a 2009 study by the Earth Advantage

Institute of homes in Portland, Ore. Eco-friendly homes also spend about 10 fewer days on the market, according to Campbell. It all comes down to basic supply-and-demand economics, Campbell says. As consumers become more interested in preserving the planet through their property choices, “builders start building homes and communities using those green features, and using them as selling points for their marketing.” Bethesda-based Rill Architects (4833 Rugby Avenue, Suite 501; 301-656-4166, Rillarchitects.com) exemplifies this trend. “Our real

Rill and his team recently worked on a house in Kensington, Md., installing additions that helped it earn a LEED gold certification. In the kitchen, they installed tan countertops made of recycled beer and soda bottles. When light hits the counters, they project a glittery sheen. The innovative touch became a focal point. “The countertops are vibrant. They’re not calm,” Rill says. “They act like granite or Corian. They are a little more expensive [than actual granite], believe it or not. You have to really be enthusiastic about it to do it.” Michael Bellaman and his family of five — who will soon move into the Kensington home from Chicago — were. The Bellamans wanted

their new place to meet three criteria: the right price, the right neighborhood and the right level of environmental friendliness. “I think a lot of houses will dabble with some components, but this house has really taken … advantage of the eco-friendly opportunities, and I think it’s done in a very nice way,” says Bellaman, the president and CEO of Associated Builders and Contractors. In the Bellamans’ basement, Rill put down cork flooring. “Cork and bamboo grow so fast” that they’re more readily replenishable in the environment than regular hardwood, Rill says. Cork is also a softer surface for tired feet — and dropped breakables — and it doesn’t trap all the dirt that carpet attracts. Cork costs about the same as standard wood flooring, Rill says. To keep financial and environmental costs down when she redid the kitchen in her Chevy Chase house, Cara Medeiros asked Aidan Design to salvage as much of the existing materials in the room as possible. She’d had the kitchen renovated five years ago, but the cabinetry didn’t hold up well, so she wanted to redo much of it. “The island is new cabinetry, but we were able to save the walnut top” from Medeiros’ original kitchen, Aidan Design’s Subaran says. “All of the cabinetry hardware was reused, but the tile work was all new and the floors were refinished.”

Medeiros, 42, a stay-at-home mom of two, says the result is a timeless, classic look. “Reusing anything is always the way to go,” she says. “For me, things with a little age have a little more character and make it more interesting.” For many of Rill’s clients, the benefits of green materials and furnishings are a rewarding bonus, if not the impetus for installing them. “I’d love to say it’s because everybody cares about the environment. I think it’s more along the line of they like the materials,” Rill says. “It’s fun. It’s playful.” That’s probably true of the salvaged railing in Richardson’s Solidago condo, too. The fixture separating the stairwell and living room was once a grate covering a pit at the Embassy of Switzerland. Now, it’s a striking element of his décor.

“I was looking for something that was unique to put there because it’s such a high sight-value location. It’s the first thing you see when you walk into the apartment,” says Tanya Topolewski, principal of True Turtle (808 Aspen St. NW; 202-550-3671, Trueturtle.com), a D.C.-based company focused on sustainable development. Topolewski bought the weathered black metal railing at D.C.’s Brass Knob (Thebrassknob. com) antiques shop for $150 and added it to Richardson’s condo. “It’s really textural,” Topolewski says of the railing. “People want to touch it. It’s rewarding to touch something that’s real, that’s been used before, even in the most mundane of ways. It wasn’t fabricated to look old. It is old.” STEPHANIE K ANOWITZ

<khd_jkh[\eh J^[Bed]>Wkb Designers share tips on how to shop for pieces that will last 7Zl_Y[ When furnishing your first apartment, there can be an overwhelming urge to rush out to the nearest chain store and blow your budget outfitting the entire place. Resist that temptation. As difficult as it may be, you should pace yourself. Spending more time and more money on fewer items now will pay off later. “Instead of using your budget on items that will fall apart, invest in quality items that you can use for many years to come,” local designer Marika Meyer says.

“It’s good to think of how you can use [something] now and how you can use it later,” says Amy Rutherford, owner of suburban Red Barn Mercantile. “You want the piece to grow with you, so it needs to be timeless and multipurpose.” Before buying, ask yourself: Do I love it? Will I still love it five years from now? Is it versatile? Keep in mind that it’s not necessary to buy your “forever” furniture right away or all at once. The following list is meant to be used as a guide as you plot your course. When it comes to buying furniture, spending your time and money slowly and surely is the key to long-term success. Riggleman Walks Out

It Was Too Good To Be True for Nats

Boiling mad over his contract, manager resigns on the spot Ç?adem?Êcde9Wi[o Ij[d][b"Xkj?Ze\[[bb_a[ ?ademm^Wj?ÊcZe_d]$È

— JIM RIGGELMAN, WHO SAID AFTER RESIGNING AS CHRISTIAN PETERSEN/GETTY IMAGES

Washington Nationals manager Jim Riggleman abruptly resigned from one of the hottest teams in baseball Thursday, saying he felt the franchise wasn’t committed to him over the long term. Riggleman quit because the Nationals weren’t prepared to pick up the option on his contract for next year, further reinforcing his feeling that he was merely a placeholder manager until the team could find someone better. “It’s been brewing for a while,” Riggleman said after the team completed a sweep of the Seattle Mariners. “It’s not a situation where I felt like I should continue on such a short lease.” His decision caught the franchise by surprise. General Manager Mike Rizzo said he’ll announce Friday who will manage the team this weekend during a road series against the Chicago White Sox. “Jim told me pregame today that if we wouldn’t pick up his option, then he wouldn’t get on the team bus today,” Rizzo said. “I felt that the time wasn’t right for me to pick up the option, and certainly today’s conversation put to me in

THE NATIONALS’ MANAGER THAT HE FELT DISRESPECTED BECAUSE HE WAS NEVER GIVEN A LONG-TERM CONTRACT.

the way it was put to me, you certainly can’t make that decision in a knee-jerk reaction. It’s too big of a decision.” The Nationals have won 11 of 12 and are above .500 this late in the season for the first time since 2005. “We should be celebrating going to Chicago,” Rizzo said. “I’m disappointed that this is a distraction, that this is not thinking of the team first, that it is thinking of personal goals, thinking of personal things firsts..” Riggleman has been working on one-year deals since taking over for Manny Acta in 2009. He was being paid $600,000 this year and the Nationals held a team option

DWji=e7Xel[$+&& Jim Riggleman’s resignation came moments after Laynce Nix hit a game-ending sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth against Seattle, pushing Washington (38-37) over .500 for the first time since April 20. Nix’s fly to left off Chris Ray (3-2) was deep enough to score Danny Espinosa, who easily beat a throw from Mike Carp. (AP)

for 2012 at $600,000. The 58-year-old Riggleman previously managed San Diego, the Chicago Cubs and Seattle, spending parts of 12 seasons in the dugout overall. He has a 662-824 record overall. Riggleman guided the Cubs to the 1998 NL wildcard spot and was let go after the next year. Born and raised in Rockville, Md., a short drive from Nationals Park, he maintained his local roots. Unable to attend his high school reunion because Washington was playing, he instead invited his classmates to meet him the same weekend at a home game. JOSEPH WHITE (AP)

Mystics Failing Chemistry Early in Season NED DISHMAN/GETTY IMAGES

J^[Coij_Yi It was one play that cost the Mystics one basket. And yet, when Kelly Miller failed to connect her pass with Crystal Langhorne in the first quarter of Tuesday’s 89-80 loss to the Indiana Fever — resulting in a turnover instead of a layup — it summed up why the Mystics have started the season 1-5 and in last place in the Eastern Conference.

Im[d]Wb_

Coach Trudi Lacey is off to a 1-5 start with the Washington Mystics this year.

“It comes a lot from us not talking,” Langhorne said. “That’s part of our problem, and then a lot of it is we still have a lot of new people. ... It’s a lot of change, so I think it’s still taking time.” The Mystics, who will try to snap their four-game skid Sunday against the Tulsa Shock, can chalk up their miscues to a lack of familiarity among the players. Only three players on last year’s active

roster, when the Mystics finished first in the Eastern Conference, are on this year’s roster. The Mystics’ lack of chemistry shows on the defensive end. They’ve allowed their opponents to score more than 10 more points per game than they surrendered last year. Time is the key, new coach Trudi Lacey said. “I think we’ll continue to learn each other and learn each other’s habits,” she said. JOE BUBAR

Even when the Nationals finally seem to be getting it right, something goes wrong. And when I say wrong, I mean terribly wrong. Manager Jim Riggleman’s sudden resignation is the absolute worst thing that can happen to a team that was the best story in baseball for the past week. A team that never even reached .500 in three of the past six seasons has more wins 8oCWjj than losses in the early Im[died days of summer for the first time since 2005. The column I should be writing — and actually completed before hearing the shocking news — is how it’s time to rename Washington’s team the JuggerNats.

7bbmWih_]^j_d j^[mehbZW\j[hj^[ DWjiYWff[ZWd.#' ^ec[ijWdZm_j^W '#&m_d$ All was right with the world after the Nats capped an 8-1 homestand with a 1-0 win over the Seattle Mariners on Thursday afternoon. Then came the bombshell. Boom goes the dynamite, all right. Whether you believe Riggleman deserved a contract extension, the skipper surely picked the right time to demand compensation for putting the moribund franchise on the right track. Clearly, General Manager Mike Rizzo doesn’t like ultimatums. Now, though, when he should be basking in the success of the roster made of his own hands, Rizzo must find a new manager. Just as soon as it seemed like things were too good to be true at Nationals Park, we’ve been reminded they were. To reach Matt Swenson, e-mail matt.swenson@readexpress.com

Caps Face Draft-Day Decisions It’s OK to come out now, Caps fans. With the NHL season over and the entry draft set to begin Friday in St. Paul, Minn., it’s time to move on from another disappointing postseason and focus on the bigger picture — the continued improvement of the Hershey Bears and the Capitals’ farm system.

M^[dWh[j^[9Wfi f_Ya_d]5

Capitals General Manager George McPhee has five picks burning a hole in his pocket, and you can bet he’ll try to land another gem with a late first-round pick. (Does John Carlson, a 27th overall pick, ring a bell?) Here is a primer on the Caps’ draft-day options.

Remember short-lived Capital Joe Corvo? When the Caps acquired the defenseman from the Carolina Hurricanes in March 2010, they gave away their second-round pick in the 2011 entry draft as part of the deal. The Caps traded their third-round pick as part of a deal to get the Florida Pan-

Washington will select in the first (26th overall), fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh rounds. The Caps’ five draft picks are tied for the fewest picks in franchise history (the team had five picks in 1979 and 2010).

thers’ Denis Wideman this year.

M^Wjfei_j_ed m_bbj^[9Wfi i^eej\eh5 The easy answer is “best player available,” but the best guess would be a defender. The Caps have grown thinner at the position after purging their minor league system for players such as Karl Alzner and John Carlson, above, in the past year, and securing the blue line’s future isn’t a bad investment. R.A.

M^WjWXekjHkii_Wdi5 While other teams are wary about drafting Russian players, the Capitals seem willing to take chances on them (see the selections of Dmitri Orlov and Evgeny Kuznetsov), despite competition from the Kontinental Hockey League to sign young Russians who have been drafted. The highest-rated Russian prospect by the NHL’s Central Scouting is winger Nikita Kucherov, pictured. In the past season, Kucherov scored 27 goals and 31 assists for 58 points for HC CSKA2 Moscow. Championships, he scored 11 goals and 10 assists in seven games.

7dobeYWbi_dj^[ZhW\j5 Hailing from McLean, Va., Jay Williams, left, is the 12th-ranked goaltending prospect from North America. His 2010-11 stats with Waterloo in the USHL aren’t great (20 games played, 3.49 goals against average, .891 save percentage), but he has international experience with the United States U-18s. There’s a good chance Williams will go undrafted, and history has shown that the Caps may not need to draft him if they want to sign a local. In 1999, they signed undrafted local product Jeff Halpern, who went on to become the team’s captain during the rebuilding years of 2005-06. REED S. ALBERS

Tory Burch FASHION DESIGNER, WORLD TRAVELER It usually takes decades for a designer to become known by just an initial or two. Think RL (Ralph Lauren) or Coco Chanel (linked C’s). Though she’s been in the biz only since 2004, Tory Burch gets immediate recognition for her double-T brand on bags, shoes and countless caftan labels. Her bohomeets-preppy aesthetic lures fans including Michelle Obama and Katie Holmes. The Philly native just opened her first D.C.-area boutique at Tysons Galleria (2001 International Drive, McLean, Va.; 703-288-0786). You’re really popular here. What took you so long to open? I love D.C. I’ve had my eye on opening a store here ever since I started. One of my brothers went to Georgetown University, and it’s

on my radar. People there are so interesting. Yeah, but don’t we get a bad rep for not being fashionable here? I think D.C. women have a lot of style, though it’s a slightly more conservative way of dressing. When I visit, I always think, “Is this skirt the right length?” What about Michelle Obama? Do you think she’s making the whole city seem more stylish? I love what Michelle Obama does — she’s stylish, and it’s great to have somebody in the White House who loves fashion like her. Who else in D.C. do you dream of dressing? I would love to dress Hillary Clinton. I’m a huge fan of her and

Our denim is having an incredible response — we’ve got these higher-waisted, wider denim pants and colored jeans. I’m also interested in suit dressing. We did a striped suit with pants inspired by a pair of my father’s trousers. You’re known for a couple of iconic pieces, like ballet flats and caftans. How do you keep those styles fresh? I’m constantly pushing myself and my design team to look at things differently. I look at the tunic and ballet flat as basics. I’m interested in opening a store in D.C. because it gives an understanding of the whole collection. It’s more than tunics and flats! Travel really influences your designs, doesn’t it? But back in the halcyon past, people went to wholesome fairs to eat pie, usually cooked by women in gingham dresses. Pie Contest in a Box ($15, Amazon.com) lets you re-create that era, or at least host a reality-show-style dessert bash, with scorecards, judges’ ribbons and tips on evaluating pies by taste, color and more.

She’ll be at Nana (3068 Mount Pleasant St. NW; 202-667-6955) Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. for a trunk show.

High-Style Highballs SINCE THE INVENTION OF COCKTAILS (sometime in the 19th century, probably in the U.S. and likely involving bourbon), people have been coming up with gadgets to blend them. Shakers. Squeezers. Reamers. Weird little things to grab olives. Into the buzzed fray comes Bartule ($45, Bartule.com), which melds most of what you’ll need to make highballs — a salt rimmer, an ice bucket, a wine bottle opener, a jigger — into one sleek-looking doohickey.

Even Better Homes And Gardens RIP, READYMADE. Poor dead Domino! Few glossies have survived the shelter-mag bloodbath, one being — cue visions of Grandma — nearly 90-year-old Better Homes and Gardens. But the old dog knows new tricks these days, what with its hip, affordable nesting ideas (turn a vintage suitcase into a coffee table, install old barn wood as a kitchen backsplash). BHG’s new book, “Small Space Decorating” ($15, Wiley), shows off bright, budget-friendly rooms and offers loads of tiny-apartment inspiration. Whether you tell pals you stole them from Lonny or Apartmenttherapy.com instead is between you and the design gods.

THIS COULD BE the most versatile Gallic product since the black truffle. Put it on your face and hair. Or your legs! Or in bathwater! Sensorielle oil by Lierac Paris ($34, Lierac-usa.com) smells like a Left Bank flower shop (gardenia and jasmine) while proving that not only do French women not get fat, but they also don’t need 10 potions for every feature (or pore) on their faces. Oui, the stuff softened our skin and made our hair almost as silky as Carla Bruni’s.

:[Wh CWdebe ANSWERS FROM THE SHOE BLOGGER

I love most of your shoe recommendations, but I can’t afford them, because I’m just a poor office drone. Can you suggest some inexpensive flat sandals I could wear on the weekends this summer? — PATRICIA

Manolo says as is usually his custom, the Manolo recommends that the poor girls save their monies and purchase the best quality of superfantastic feetwear that they can afford, for such investments are repaid many times over in comfort, beauty and the satisfaction of wearing.

But, the Manolo also sympathizes with the poor working girls, who must work hard to pay the rent on the tiny, ninth-floor-walk-up, studio apartment in the grungy bohemian part of town, where all of the boys wear the tooskinny-jeans and ride the bicycles. Indeed, the Manolo himself knows what it is like to be so poor that you must fashion your own super-fantastic flat sandals out of the Pabst Blue Ribbon cans and pieces of oversized hipster eyeglasses you have found in the dumpster behind that ironically iconic (iconically ironic?) dive bar. And so the Manolo would recommend to you the Gigi from the Sam Edelman ($60, Zappos.com) as being the simple-but-good-looking, moderately priced flat sandal for your summer wearing needs. It is available in 15 colors and materials, from “spicy orange” to “silver boa,” although the Manolo is partial to the “natural cork” finish. For the less adventurous, “saddle” and “black” would be the good choice. Ask the Manolo a question at manolo@shoeblogs.com. Visit the Manolo at shoeblogs.com.

Alas, Poor Mater As the mother of a 3-year-old, I have the research to back up this statement: “Cars” holds up pretty well to multiple viewings. And by “multiple” I mean “at least 50.” “Cars 2,” out today, probably won’t. “Cars” is the story of, in the words of my son, “a real fast race car” named Lightning McQueen, who learns a valuable lesson when he ends up in a small town. One of his mentors on his journey is a rusty tow truck 8oAh_ij[d named Mater. In “Cars FW][#A_hXo 2,” Mater is the main character — and that’s the problem. In the first film, where McQueen is a nuanced, well-rounded character, Mater mostly serves as a one-note foil. He’s fun to watch and is absolutely necessary, but his major function is to show McQueen that you can be happy even if you’re not a real fast race car. He’s like the gravedigger in “Hamlet” — he’s well-written, he’s enjoyable to watch, and he serves a metaphorical purpose, but, well, there’s a reason there’s no play called “Gravedigger.” Of course, young fans will love “Cars 2,” and it will probably be a financial success, even before factoring in the Lightning McQueen toys and the clothes and the sheets and the insulin and whatever else they’re selling. But the mistake Pixar made in this, its weakest film by far, was thinking that a tow truck could pull a story along. Comments? Give Kristen your feedback: expressnightout.com/thereelist

Hkdd_d] Ekje\=Wi ‘Cars 2’ has its charms but doesn’t live up to the series’ first installment

<_bcH[l_[m “Cars 2” features a lot more of two things: Mater, the rusty, rednecky tow truck voiced by Larry the Cable Guy; and car racing. On the surface, this sounds like the appeal of the sequel to the animated “Cars” might be limited, somewhat, to the NASCAR demographic, or at least a whole lot more than the first film was. While there were a few racing scenes in the original 2006 film, most of that story centered on the distinctive “personalities” of its talking-car characters — hotshot stock car Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson), cranky vintage racer Doc Hudson (Paul Newman); sexy Porsche Sally Carrera (Bonnie Hunt) — and their relationships with one another. As lovable as Mater is, let’s face it: A little bit of Larry the Cable Guy goes a long way. Fortunately, “Cars 2” is a long, looong way from the Talladega, not to mention from Radiator Springs, the remote Southwestern town where Mater lives and where the first movie takes place. Set in Tokyo, London and a picturesque Italian village during a threepart, international race to determine the fastest car in the world, “Cars 2” boasts eye-popping scenery of far-flung locales and thrilling race sequences. It’s a visually stunning film. Unfortunately, the

‘Cars 2’ Adds Fuel to the Gasoline Debate Pixar Animation’s John Lasseter says the company has no environmental agenda, but with “Cars 2,” the outfit does tap into today’s eco-mindedness with a plot driven by oil versus a cleaner alternative. “Cars 2” sends Lightning McQueen on a World Grand Prix circuit whose organizer fuels the vehicles with a green alternative called Allinol, prompting the bad guys to try to discredit the new power supply that threatens traditional gasoline. (AP)

sequel shortchanges the very relationships that gave the first movie its surprising heart. The overly complicated plot of “Cars 2” centers on a mystery — specifically, a secret weapon that threatens Lightning and his fellow racers, and the identity of the shadowy figure who’s using it. Two British secret agents are on the case: Finn McMissile (Michael Caine) and Holly Shiftwell (Emily Mortimer). McMissile, unsurprisingly, bears more than a passing resemblance to James Bond’s tricked-out Aston Martin, if designed by Inspector Gadget. It’s very cleverly done. In general, so is the entire film. But cleverFrom left: Fillmore (Lloyd Sherr), Luigi (Tony Shalhoub), Guido (Guido Quaroni) and Mater (Larry the Cable Guy) in “Cars 2.”

ness is no substitute for emotion. The intrigue — in which Mater gets mixed up when he’s taken for an American spy — excites but does not engage. A subplot involving a rift in Mater and Lightning’s friendship feels perfunctory, like an attempt to tack a moral onto a thriller. And as smart-looking and sharpsounding as “Cars 2” mostly is, the central mystery about the identity of the villain — a car whose engine has been identified but whose body is never shown, and whose voice has been altered — just isn’t that much of a mystery. At least not for anyone who has seen more than one or two “Scooby-Doo” cartoons. That said, there’s enough to like about “Cars 2” to make for a pleasant ride. It may not be fully loaded, but there’s still enough gas in the tank to get you around the track one more time. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN (THE WASHINGTON POST )

7FWii_d]=hWZ[ Cameron Diaz gets high marks, but ‘Bad Teacher’s’ premise is ultimately limiting “Bad Teacher” is exactly the one-joke movie that you probably expect it to be, but there are enough variations of that one joke to sustain its brief running time — just barely. Cameron Diaz plays ... a bad teacher. She secretly sips airline-size booze bottles during class, doesn’t bother to learn her students’ names and figures that showing them movies about education is just as good as educating them herself. Because, you see, she’s not teaching middle school English for the deeply rewarding experience of shaping young minds. She just needs enough cash for a boob job. Director Jake Kasdan photographs Diaz as if she were a vixen in a Whitesnake video, and Diaz revels in a role that lets her be sexy and inappropriately funny all at once. Jason Segel is hugely likable as

hang out with her anyway. Phyllis Smith has some wonderfully awkward moments as a shy teacher dazzled by Elizabeth’s behavior. And then there’s Justin Timberlake, Diaz’s real-life ex-boyfriend. He plays a proper and preppy substitute who comes from old money but teaches because he believes that children are our future. He may not let loose like he has on “Saturday Night Live,” but he’s a pleasure as always. Still, “Bad Teacher” leaves you wishing they’d all misbehaved just a little bit more. CHRIST Y LEMIRE (AP)

OK, that last part isn’t true. But the famously Irish Catholic comedian and talk-show host does joke about being half-Jewish — and many other things — in “Conan O’Brien Can’t Stop,” a documentary about the live stage show he toured the country with in the summer of 2010 after being forced by NBC to exit

“The Tonight Show.” Partly about the making of the stage show and partly about the anger and compulsion underlying the making of it, the movie is often very funny. And

when it’s not, it’s revelatory. A mix of live music, stand-up, vaudeville, random guest spots and public confession, O’Brien’s “Legally Prohibited From Being Funny on Television” tour was an almost instant hit, selling out before the show’s contents had been created. And what becomes clear in the film, directed by Rodman Flender, is that what O’Brien really loves best is being in front of an audience. He makes jokes at everyone’s expense: his writers, his personal assistant, his friends, his fans. But O’Brien is funniest, and most revealing, when making them about his own fame and ego, his own neediness and self-doubt. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN (THE WASHINGTON POST )

BEGINNERS (R, 104 minutes) The story of a middle-aged man who learns that his father is gay, only to lose him to cancer a few years later, “Beginners” traces the effect of both cataclysms on the younger man’s nascent relationship with a fetching French actress. The film opens with the death of Hal (Christopher Plummer), who, as his son Oliver (Ewan McGregor) explains in a voice-over, came out of the closet with a flamboyant vengeance after his longtime wife died, taking a younger lover and diving into Southern California gay culture. Jumping around in time — from flashbacks of growing up in a house where so much went unspoken to his father’s coming out to just before his death — the movie focuses on Oliver’s efforts to untangle how his parents’ marriage informed his own fears of commitment. A.H. GREEN LANTERN (PG-13, 105 minutes) The premise of “Green Lantern” seems as musty as a dog-eared pulp magazine: Earth’s Lantern is one of thousands of intergalactic cops who wear magic rings that draw their juice from “the emerald energy of willpower.” The latest contender for emeraldhood is Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds), a bad-boy test pilot, forever striving to be as brave as the top-gun father he saw incinerated by exploding jet fuel. Yet Hal doesn’t seem the hero type, exactly. A self-described “total screw-up,” he’s personally unreliable and emotionally unavailable, even to longtime love/hate interest Carol Ferris

(Blake Lively). Half of “Green Lantern” transpires in CGI-created outer space, and yet this is the type of movie where all the central players are close at hand. Not only is Hal’s true love an office mate; so is his potential adversary, Hector Hammond (Peter Sarsgaard). MARK JENKINS THE HANGOVER: PART II (R, 102 minutes) A veritable textbook case of what not to do when remaking a comedy that depended on sheer surprise for most of its appeal, “The Hangover: Part II” also inadvertently points out the weaknesses of the first movie. In “Part II,” director Todd Phillips follows the first movie beat for beat, switching a character and location here and there but never straying far from the original template. The movie opens with Bradley Cooper’s Phil — scruffy, sweaty, red-eyed — dolefully calling Tracy, the impending bride from the first movie, to tell her that, once again, “We [screwed] up.” By “we,” of course, he means Alan (Zach Galifianakis) and Stu (Ed Helms), who is about to be married in Thailand. Once the posse lands in Thailand, “just one beer” two nights before the wedding turns into a similar bender, with the three principals awaking in a Bangkok hotel room with a monkey in a Rolling Stones vest and no memory of how they got there. A.H. KUNG FU PANDA 2 (PG, 92 minutes) In the satisfying, if less than sensational, sequel to the funny, charming and actionpacked animated feature from 2008, Po the panda (voice of Jack Black) returns in pursuit of inner peace, the defeat of a murderous peacock (Gary Oldman) and the truth about what happened to his real parents. What? You didn’t actually think that Mr. Ping (James Hong), the noodle-

Abrams’ sci-fi thriller “Super 8.” making Chinese goose from the first movie who raised Po as his son, was actually our hero’s biological father, did you? The new movie puts that question to rest. It’s both a story about Po’s search for his origins and a reckoning with the bad guy responsible for Po’s identity crisis. M.O. MIDNIGHT IN PARIS (PG-13, 94 minutes) From its rapturous opening sequence, “Midnight in Paris” announces that Woody Allen has returned to at least one of his most beloved forms. “Midnight in Paris” finds Allen in a larky, slightly tart and altogether bountiful mood. Owen Wilson plays Gil, a screenwriter and would-be serious author who’s visiting Paris with his fiancee, Inez (Rachel McAdams), and her parents. Gil is besotted with the Paris of the 1920s, when his heroes F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway traded dry martinis and even drier barbs with the likes of Gertrude Stein and Pablo Picasso. Inez and her family, on the other hand, couldn’t care less. The mood is doubly spoiled when they bump into Paul (Michael Sheen), an old college crush of Inez’s, now an incorrigible pedant. A.H. MR. POPPER’S PENGUINS (PG, 97 minutes) Jim Carrey, as the titular Thomas Popper, steals the show from his avian co-stars, a flock of CGI penguins who are strenuously adorable in the way that only CGI penguins can be. Playing a slick Manhattan real estate developer who reluctantly comes into possession of six Gentoo penguins, the actor uses his gift for physical comedy and funny voices to propel this gentle comedy forward

toward its sweet if slightly familiar message about the importance of family over career advancement. A divorced dad who shares custody of his kids with his ex-wife (Carla Gugino), Popper decides to keep the penguins only after his son (Maxwell Perry Cotton) and daughter (Madeline Carroll) beg him not to send them back. Grown-ups will see where this is going. But before it gets there, what follows is a series of antic misadventures involving penguins’ need for cold temperatures — Popper essentially turns his apartment into a giant walk-in freezer — and the birds’ propensity for imprinting with a parental figure, regardless of species. M.O. SUPER 8 (R, 118 minutes) In “Super 8,” a chubby would-be director named Charles (Riley Griffiths) keeps running around his small Ohio hometown, framing its culde-sacs and tract homes with his hands and calling for “more production value.” Charles is shooting his own zombie movie, and he has commandeered his adolescent friends to work on his cast and crew. The scenes of Charles’ movie-within-a-movie turn out to be the best parts of “Super 8.” While Charles and his team are filming, they inadvertently record a horrific accident that ends up drawing the attention of the U.S. Air Force. Charles’ special-effects guy, Joe Lamb (Joel Courtney), is convinced that something is afoot, between the mysterious military ops, an electrical grid gone haywire and an epidemic of missing dogs. A.H. THE TREE OF LIFE (PG-13, 138 minutes) The sprawling story of a man’s quest to reconcile a contradictory parental legacy,

“The Tree of Life” ties that search to more metaphysical questions having to do with God, creation, truth and beauty. As a character named Mr. O’Brien, Brad Pitt plays the patriarch of a 1950s family that lives in a leafy Texas suburb. A hardjawed, embittered martinet, Mr. O’Brien brings up his three boys with a toxic combination of intimidation and commanding affection. Less a narrative than a series of sharp shards of memory, the next segment of “The Tree of Life” traces his life with Father, whose mercurial, fearsome force Jack fuses with God’s power at its most fickle and inscrutable. A.H. X-MEN: FIRST CLASS (PG-13, 131 minutes) “First Class” begins, like the comic book series itself, in 1944. That’s when a young German boy named Erik Lehnsherr watches his parents being hauled off to Auschwitz. In a fit of fear and rage, he bends the metal gate separating him from his family, commanding the attention of a scientist eager to harness young Erik’s telekinetic powers. Twenty years later, the grown Erik (Michael Fassbender) contemplates his revenge against the man who went on to ruin his life and who now goes by the name of Sebastian Shaw. Meanwhile, the genially telepathic Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) is earning his doctorate in genetic research at Oxford, with his shape-shifting friend and surrogate sister, Raven, by his side. A.H. Jurassic Rock Dinosaur Jr. is not for everyone. If you don’t like feedback in your music, for instance, you’ll want to stay away. But if the scratchy altrock sound appeals to you (and the band has been around since the ’80s, so you probably know if you like it), then check out the group’s concert Saturday. 9:30 Club, 815 V St. NW; Sat., 8 p.m., $30; 202265-0930, 930.com. Because our favorite games re-enact violent combat (e.g. Risk, Battleship), we are inordinately fond of water balloon fights. This Sunday the Georgetown Waterfront will become a festival of barbecue and children’s activities, and the best part is the massive “water balloon toss,” which begins as a “try your best not to break the balloons” event but soon gives way to an enormous water-gun fight. And that’s just how they plan it! There’s no fighting human nature. Washington Harbor, 3000 K St. NW; Sun., noon, free; 202-2989222, Georgetowndc.com.

We love the National Symphony Orchestra Pops for taking weird chances, like this weekend’s performance backing up funk/hip-hop/ samba band Ozomatli. Sure, it’s at the Kennedy Center and it’s likely to be more subdued than the average Ozomatli concert, but we’re sure it will bring both da noise and da funk. LWcf_h[i HBO’s “True Blood” enters its fourth season in full-f ledged fantasy mode. It almost seems like the premium network wants the audience for the just-completed “Game of Thrones” to stick around. As the action commences, Sookie (Anna Paquin) seems knee-deep in some kind of fairyland where time stands still and gorgeous folks devour a magical glowing fruit, an appetizer our heroine has the presence of mind to avoid. Not to give too much away, but action soon returns to her vampire Peyton Place by the bayou, where things are nuanced and interesting, if not a tad hard to follow. Not unlike those glowing apples, “True Blood” is a decidedly acquired taste, even if its myriad subplots seem to have grown and multiplied like kudzu.

CANCER (June 21-July 22) You must go through a good deal of prep work before you are ready to put your plans into motion. When things start, they start quickly. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Things are likely to progress according to plan, but it is you — not the day’s events — that will surprise those around you. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Are you sure you want to see certain things more clearly? This may be a situation in which ignorance is indeed bliss. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You are eager to work with a certain someone on a certain project, but you must make changes in your daily routine to make room for this work. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) What comes to you piecemeal is worth assembling slowly and carefully until you have the whole picture laid out before you.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You may find yourself on the unpopular side of a heated argument, but things are likely to cool considerably very soon. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You will receive a warning of sorts that has you thinking twice about the plans you’ve been making. Perhaps you should lie low for a while.
