TYPICAL GAME OF THRONES

‘Dave Goldblatt Is Going To Go Dave GoldSPLATT’ Dave Goldblatt, a 30-year-old Facebook employee, won a $20,000 charity auction. The prize? Having a character named after him in an upcoming book by “Game of Thrones” creator George R. R. Martin, according to ABC News. The station reported that Martin is raising the money for Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary and the Food Depot of Santa Fe, N.M. And yes, Goldblatt’s character — which will be in an upcoming book in the “A Song of Ice and Fire” series — will be killed off. (EXPRESS) PANHANDLED

‘Humanitarian Crisis’ at Border

Central American women, kids flood into south Texas

47,000

Behind the beige brick facade and the barbed wire of the Border Patrol station in McAllen, Texas, crowds of Central American women and children are sleeping on concrete floors in 90-degree heat. The sick are separated by strands of police tape from the crying babies and expectant mothers. They subsist on bologna sandwiches and tacos, with portable toilets and no showers, and their wait can last for days. These are examples of the detention conditions, captured on a surreptitious video obtained by The Washington Post, that prompted President Barack Obama to declare a “humanitarian crisis” this week, as illegal migrants, including thou-

lence and poverty, they are driven in part by the mistaken belief that Central American women and children will not be deported. The spike over the past three months, particularly of children traveling without parents, has overwhelmed the Border Patrol’s detention centers in Texas, prompting authorities to ship children to

Unlike illegal migrants from Mexico, who can be quickly processed and returned by bus, Central Americans cannot be easily shipped home. Airplanes must be chartered. Consular arrangements must be made. And if migrants request asylum, the U.S. government must determine whether their appeal is based on a legitimate need for protection. None of the Above Wins Since 1975, Nevadans have had the option to cast a vote for “none of these candidates.” And on Tuesday, that’s what Democratic voters did, choosing no one nearly 22,000 times in the gubernatorial primary. “None of these candidates” finished first with 30 percent of the vote. Now what? The second-place finisher will face the GOP candidate for governor. (THE WASHINGTON POST) WASHINGTON

We’re More Polarized Than Ever Before Political polarization is now deeply embedded in the U.S. — more so than at any time in recent history, according to a new study by the Pew Research Center. The percentage of Americans who hold consistently conservative or consistently liberal positions on major issues has doubled over the past decade and accounts for one-fifth of Americans. More than a third of all Republicans and Republican-leaning independents and more than a quarter of all Democrats and Democraticleaning independents see the other party as a threat to the nation’s well-being. Paved and Amused: Fed up with an annoying pothole in front of his house, mosaic artist Jim Bachor decided to fill the hole on his own — but with more than just cement. The Chicago resident created a mosaic and has since been similarly filling holes throughout the city. Some versions hold phone numbers to auto repair shops, while others simply read “POTHOLE.” His most recent installment — “#21914” — pokes fun at the huge number of potholes in the city. (AP)

‘Happy Farter’s Day’ Why do greeting cards portray dad as a hapless buffoon? Washington There’s a good chance if you receive — or give — a Father’s Day card this weekend Dad will be portrayed as a farting, beer-obsessed, tool-challenged buffoon who would rather hog the remote, go fishing or play golf than be with the kids. That’s what the greeting card industry thinks of dads, and apparently kids too since so-called funny cards are the top-sellers when it comes to honoring fathers. An informal Washington Post survey of local drugstores found dozens of cards based on the same themes — some image of beer, a fishing pole, a TV, a recliner, caveman, hapless handyman or a fart joke. But just who are these dads, and what century are they from? The greeting card image of dad as incompetent boob is increasingly out of sync with today’s fathers, many of whom spend as much time packing lunches and helping with homework as their own fathers spent in the Barcalounger. But corny stereotypes still sell,

HALLMARK CARDS INC.

Changing Times Greeting card companies say they are listening to calls for more diversity from the standard fare (see above) and will increasingly show more involved dads. Matt Gowen, editorial director for Hallmark’s humorous Father’s Day cards, said the company focused this year on appealing to millennial dads. One card shows two brawny men armwrestling. One says, “Gah! You been weightlifting?” as the other answers, “Nope. Kid-carrying.” (T WP)

greeting card companies say. The Father’s Day best-seller for NobleWorks Cards, a New Jersey-based publisher of humorous greeting cards, says, “Keep Calm We Found the Remote.” The second shows kids

surrounding dad as he opens a card misspelled as “Happy Farter’s Day.” “Why do we celebrate mothers and all they do for their families, and we’re really denigrating dads?” asked Matt Schneider, a “work-athome” father of two and co-founder of the national City Dads Group. “I don’t think anyone would send one of those cards to me because they know I wouldn’t find it funny.” So why do dad-bashing cards resonate on a holiday celebrating fatherhood? Greeting card companies say funny cards work well for fathers who shy away from sentimentality, aren’t particularly close with their children, or, most often, serve as the corny family jokester known for eliciting the “Oh, Dad” groan. Men also appreciate punch-in-thearm, even immature, humor more than women, companies say. “The jokes aren’t usually about Dad taking you to the baseball game — that’s not funny,” said Ron Kanfi, president of NobleWorks. “It’s hoarding the [TV] remote control or farting — that’s a lot funnier than him taking you to the movies. … You try to give Mom a fart joke for Mothers Day, it probably won’t fly very well, but with Dad you can.” KATHERINE SHAVER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Risky Teenage Business American teens are smoking less, drinking less and fighting less. But they’re texting behind the wheel and spending a lot of time on video games and computers, according to the government’s latest study of worrisome behavior. The results come from a study of 13,000 U.S. high school students last spring (the responses were anonymous). MIKE STOBBE (AP)

The proportion of teens who smoked a cigarette in the previous month — the lowest level since the survey began in 1991, when it was greater than 27 percent. More than 23 percent of teens said they used marijuana in the past month.

The proportion of teens who had sex in the previous three months, about the same as in 2011 (in 1991, the figure was 38 percent). Among them, condom use was also unchanged from the 2011 study at about 60 percent.

The proportion of teens who use a computer for three or more hours on an average school day for nonschool reasons, up from 31 percent in 2011. TV viewing for three or more hours a day has stalled at around 32 percent since 2011.

The proportion of teens who reported getting in a fight anywhere in the preceding year, down from 33 percent two years earlier and from 43 percent in 1991. Just 8 percent reported getting in a fight on school property in 2013.

Surviving a 700-Day Syrian Siege Pharmacist, 65, was one of few to stay in blockaded Old City Homs, Syria Over the course of the 700-day blockade, her world shrunk to her living room and her kitchen. She survived by eating plants and reading books. She refused to look in the mirror, because seeing her withered state might break her spirit. Zeinat Akhras, a 65-year-old pharmacist, still bears the effects of nearly two years trapped in her home, surrounded by rebel fighters during the government’s siege on the ancient quarters of the central Syrian city of Homs. She’s still a wispy 83 pounds, even after gaining eight pounds since the blockade ended in early May with the fall of the rebels in the city. “Every day, we said it will end

tomorrow,” Akhras said. Homs’ Old City, a series of crowded neighborhoods, was under siege and bombardment in a campaign by government forces to starve out rebels. Government forces clamped the seal over the opposition-held

districts in early 2012. Most of the tens of thousands of residents of the areas had already fled. With the siege dragging on, rebels began deserting as hunger spread, and morale collapsed in late 2013. Finally, the last few dozen fighters were evacuated in May to areas

further north under a cease-fire. Akhras and her two brothers were among the few civilians who stayed until the end. As the blockade deepened, Akhras rarely left the building — perhaps six times during the 700 days, she estimated. “I used to come back sad from seeing the destruction. This area used to be full of life,” she said. Akhras initially didn’t know on May 9 that the blockade had been lifted and government troops had entered the neighborhood. In a rare outing to the well across her alleyway, she saw a man who told her, “The army is here.” Surprised, Akhras found a soldier and asked him for bread — still unaware of how skeletal she appeared. The soldier bought her two dozen pieces of pita bread. “I ate a whole piece of bread myself,” she said, her eyes shining. “It tasted like sweets.” DIAA HADID (AP)

Why is this happening now?

Why won’t Iraq’s forces fight back?

Is the U.S. going to do anything?

The group, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, is taking advantage of growing discontent among Iraq’s minority Sunnis toward Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki’s Shiiteled government, which they accuse of discrimination.

Corruption and sectarianism are widespread problems in the security forces, with little sense of loyalty to the Baghdad government. Also, Islamic militants are terrorizing Sunni soldiers and police, in at least one case beheading an officer.

President Barack Obama said Thursday it is now clear Iraq will need help from the United States as the situation there deteriorates, adding that he wouldn’t “rule out anything,” including drone strikes and airstrikes, but not ground troops.

The amount spent by the U.S. on eight patrol boats for the Afghan police, according to an internal audit released Thursday. None of the boats ever made it to Afghanistan, which is a landlocked country, because they weren’t necessary, according to the report by the U.S. Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction. Gun Rights Activist Adam Kokesh Convicted Controversial gun rights activist Adam Kokesh was convicted of drug and gun charges Thursday in a Fairfax County court. Kokesh entered an Alford plea to two felonies for possessing hallucinogenic mushrooms while possessing a gun. Judge: No Gag Order In Va. Firearms Case Lawyers involved in an unusually highprofile firearms case in Loudoun County will not be barred from speaking publicly, a judge ruled Thursday. A defense attorney for Charles Severance, who is charged with felony firearm possession, had asked for a gag order during the case, arguing that a “media tempest” could taint the jury pool. Alexandria police have said they want to question him in the unsolved shooting deaths of three city residents. Severance has not been charged in those slayings and police have declined to name him as a suspect. (TWP) WASHINGTON

New School Boundaries Proposed The controversial citywide lottery for D.C. is scrapped Washington D.C. officials on Thursday put forth a new proposal for public school boundaries that would maintain a system of neighborhood schools while providing a way for children, particularly those who are disadvantaged, to gain access to schools outside their immediate communities. The proposal would redraw the city’s boundaries for elementary, middle and high schools in an effort to adjust for decades of school closures and demographic change that created a patchwork of overlapping attendance zones, leaving some schools overcrowded while others were underused. It also attempts to create a more coherent, consistent and predictable

A previous set of proposals released in April, which had considered replacing neighborhood schools — which students have a right to attend based on their home addresses — with lottery admis-

Medical Marijuana Access May Grow Washington D.C. Council members pressed forward with plans to broadly expand access to medical marijuana in the nation’s capital Thursday, drawing praise from residents suffering from an array of conditions that they say should qualify them for legal use of the plant. Under legislation that all 13 Council members have pledged to support, the bill would strike from D.C. law a narrow list of four conditions, including AIDS, that qualify residents to apply for legal purchase of marijuana. New guidelines would simply leave it up to physicians to

decide whether a patient might benefit from prescribed marijuana. The push to loosen the medical marijuana program follows the council’s decision in March to eliminate all criminal penalties for possession of marijuana for personal use, replacing a potential one-

year jail term with a fine of just $25. (Smoking it in public could still draw a jail term of 60 days, similar to the penalty for public consumption of alcohol.) On paper, the proposed guidelines for marijuana prescriptionwriting would make the District’s program among the most liberal nationwide. However, several restrictions, such as automatic audits of doctors who prescribe to more than 250 people, and D.C. licensing of each plant used for legal cultivation, would keep the program far more regulated than in states such as California. Test Week to Precede Silver Line Opening Washington Whenever Metro sets a date for opening the Silver Line, the start of passenger service will be preceded by a week of what the transit authority calls “simulated service.” During that week, no passengers will ride to or from the five new stations in Fairfax County. World Cup 2014

D.C.’s World Cup Viewing Guide It’s clear Washington is an international city. But the best time to see public displays of multiple countries’ national pride is during the World Cup, the monthlong soccer fest that kicked off Thursday. Embassies will turn matches into official events. Bars will fill with fans cheering as if they were in the stadium instead of thousands of miles away. The Post set out to find the area’s most immersive World Cup experience, reaching out to embassies, expat social groups and a veritable United Nations of bars and restaurants for advice on the best spots to watch each country. The effort fell just short of its goal with recommendations for 25 of the 32 teams. Regardless, with this guide, you’ll be able to enjoy the Cup no matter who wins. FRITZ HAHN (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Wait, What About …? Have tips on the best spots for fans of Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Honduras, Iran, Ivory Coast and Nigeria to cheer on their teams? Email goingoutguide@washpost.com.

GROUP A Brazil, Cameroon, Croatia, Mexico

Brazil: The Grill from Ipanema is celebrating its 20th year in Adams Morgan, and the restaurant has served as a World Cup destination for fans of Brazil the entire time. It keeps the samba music going and the delicious caipirinhas flowing. Ceiba doesn’t draw the same jerseywearing crowd, but the restaurant has cooked up a menu of Brazilian street food to serve during matches, including bolinho de bacalhau (salt cod fritters) and pork-belly feijoada stew. Ipanema: 1858 Columbia Road NW; 202986-0757, thegrillfromipanema.com. (Woodley Park) Ceiba: 701 14th St. NW; 202-393-3983, ceibarestaurant.com. (Metro Center)

Cameroon: Good West African food and beers make Silver Spring’s Roger Miller Restaurant a destination for fans of numerous African teams, but Cameroon’s Indomitable Lions clearly rule the place. Capacity is low, so arrive early. 941 Bonifant St., Silver Spring; 301-5627050, facebook.com/rogermiller restaurant. (Silver Spring)

Croatia: Ambar’s owner is Serbian and the food is pan-Balkan. Geopolitics mean the Capitol Hill restaurant isn’t backing any one team, but if you want to watch Croatia on a projection screen while you sip a glass of strong rakia (Croatia’s most popular spirit), this is the spot. 523 Eighth St. SE; 202-813-3039, ambarrestaurant.com. (Eastern Market)

Mexico (GROUP A)

Australia, Chile*, Netherlands, Spain

Australia: Solly’s U Street Tavern is a rugby bar, thanks to owner John Solomon, a coach of the Washington Irish rugby team. But it draws a fair few Aussies so it’s showing all Australian and U.S. soccer games. The Australians in Washington Association will host viewing parties at Fado Irish Pub with kid-friendly 1 p.m. kickoffs Wednesday and June 23. Solly’s, 1942 11th St. NW; 202-232-6590, sollystavern.com. (U Street). Fado, 808 Seventh St. NW; 202-789-0066, fadoirish pub.com/washington. (Gallery Place)

Netherlands: Hundreds of Netherlands fans turned Mackey’s orange during the 2010 World Cup: The downtown pub became a sea of brightly colored shirts, wigs and lion-shaped headgear every time Arjen Robben and his compatriots took the field. This year, local expat groups, such as the DC Dutch, are moving the gatherings to Elephant and Castle on Pennsylvania Avenue, but expect the party vibe to continue. 1201 Pennsylvania Ave. NW; 202-347-7707, elephant castle.com/dc_penn. (Federal Triangle)

There are two ways to watch Mexico in the World Cup. Modern Mexican restaurants will have viewing parties and happy hours; both branches of El Centro D.F. will offer $5 margaritas, beers, wine and, in a nod to the host country, caipirinhas during every match. Fuego in Clarendon will have $5 margaritas and food specials during all Mexican (and American) first-round games. But some of the biggest parties will be at smaller Mexican restaurants and clubs in the suburbs, such as El Rodeo Sports Bar in Riverdale, Md., or Mexico Lindo in Bladensburg, Md. For El Tri’s first match against Cameroon (Friday, noon), Mexico Lindo will provide a free beer for every Mexican goal. El Centro D.F.: two locations; elcentrodf.com. Fuego: 2800 Clarendon Blvd., Arlington; 571-970-2180, fuegova.com. (Clarendon) El Rodeo: 6258 Kenilworth Ave., Riverdale, Md.; 301-927-0202, facebook.com/ elrodeosportsbarmd. Mexico Lindo/MXL: 5652 Annapolis Road, Bladensburg, Md.; 301-779-7988, facebook.com/MexicoLindoMXLNightClub.

GROUP B

Spain: To see reigning World Cup champs Spain, the Spanish Embassy suggests a Spanishowned restaurant, such as La Taberna del Alabardero, which will show all of Spain’s matches in its lively wine bar, or Bethesda’s 100 Montaditos. Chef Jose Andres is showing every game and offering food and drink specials at all three Jaleo locations. Spanish fans also like Elephant and Castle, which could make for a cracking atmosphere when the Spanish and Dutch meet Friday at 3 p.m. Jaleo: multiple Mexico’s Giovani Dos Santos

GROUP C

Colombia*, Greece, Ivory Coast*, Japan

Greece: Veranda is throwing its support to Greece for the World Cup with matches shown on projection screens and discounted beers. Kapnos will show every game while serving $9 Watermelon Lemonade cocktails and other Greek treats. Veranda: 1100 P St. NW; 202-2346870, verandaonp.com. (Shaw-Howard U) Kapnos: 2201 14th St. NW; 202-234-5000, kapnosdc.com. (U Street)

Japan: The JapanAmerica Society of Washington DC is organizing a viewing party for Japan’s second match, against Greece, on Thursday at 6 p.m. The gathering is free, and snacks and drinks will be provided. Fans of the Samurai Blue must register on jaswdc .org by Wednesday. 1819 L St. NW; 202833-2210, jaswdc.org. (Farragut North) busandi gendis et aperrovidi vel

Costa Rica, England, Italy, Uruguay

Costa Rica: First Down Sports Bar will show every World Cup match. But expect “a large population” of Costa Rica fans at the Arlington bar, according to a manager who says they’ve come in to watch World Cup qualifiers and international friendlies. 4213 N. Fairfax Drive, Arlington; 703-465-8888, firstdown sportsbar.com. (Ballston)

Italy: Vendetta is staking its claim as a top soccer-watching spot for Italy fans. Look for discounted Peroni and wine and food specials daily. Nearby, The Big Board will pour half-price Peroni pints during Italy matches. Vendetta: 1212 H St. NE; 202-399-3201, vendettadc.com. The Big Board: 421 H St. NE; 202-543-3630, thebigboarddc.com. You Are What You Drink In the global gathering that is the World Cup, something as innocuous as the beer you order could send a message about who you root for or what kind of fan you are. Drink responsibly. MICHAEL CUNNIFF (E XPRESS)

Stella Artois and the Belgian team share a lot of the same qualities. They’re both pretty good, and seem to be everyone’s second favorite. Like rooting for Belgium, ordering a Stella will offend nobody and may earn you a few nods of approval.

You ordered Peroni because, let’s be honest, it’s Italian and you want to seem fancy — the same reasons you root for the Italian national team (if you’re not from Italy). But just like Italy is often painful to watch, Peroni is painful to drink.

Embodying American spirit while being managed by Europeans — that’s what both team USA and Budweiser represent. Order this, and do your best impression of U.S. national team coach Jurgen Klinsmann’s signature celebratory dive.

Dos Equis? More like dos a cero, an American fan would say (it’s the taunt Americans direct at the Mexican team after beating it 2-0 in four straight home World Cup Qualifiers). Like Mexico, this beer is just not as good as its American competitors on U.S. soil.

06.13.2014 Martin Kaymer seizes the U.S. Open lead after shooting 5-under 15

Stage Set for Klinsmann ADAM PRETTY (GETTY IMAGES)

Coach has his stamp all over the U.S. team entering World Cup Soccer In 1998, the U.S. national team finished dead last in the World Cup, losing all three group stage games to Yugoslavia, Iran and Germany. In the USA’s game against Germany, a 2-0 loss, the second goal was scored by a 33-year-old forward named Jurgen Klinsmann.

Neymar, middle, scored twice to lead Brazil to a 3-1 win over Croatia.

Host Brazil Opens With A Victory

6 P.M. Monday | ESPN

By that time, Klinsmann was revered in his native land. The striker had been a big part of Germany’s triumphs at the 1990 World Cup and the 1996 European Championship. In 1998, the same year he scored against the United States in the World Cup, Klinsmann moved to Southern California, where he lived during the offseason following his marriage to an American woman. In 2006, he coached Germany to the semifinal at the World Cup. It was probably inevitable that Klinsmann, with his unique skill set, would draw the attention of U.S. Soccer President Sunil Gulati. Klinsmann had experience playing and coaching at the highest level in Europe, and a familiarity with the American soccer landscape. It was just what Gulati wanted. After a five-year courting period, Gulati finally got his man in the summer of 2011, as Klinsmann was named U.S. national team head coach. Just over two years later — after qualifying for the World Cup but

before actually playing in it — U.S. Soccer further cast its lot with the German coach, signing him to a contract extension through 2018 and adding the title of technical director. It’s clear the U.S. Soccer Federation has fallen under Klinsmann’s spell. However, up to this point, the coach merely has his squad where it’s supposed to be. In order to justify his mandate — and his $2.5 million salary — the U.S. must produce, and do so at a World Cup. In a stunning demonstration of the power he wields, Klinsmann unceremoniously axed alltime leading scorer Landon Donovan from his World Cup team last month, and did so reportedly without notifying anybody beforehand.

“I think for us now, talking about winning a World Cup is just not realistic.” — U.S. COACH JURGEN K LINSM A NN, SPEAKING WEDNESDAY DURING HIS FIRST NEWS CONFERENCE IN BRAZIL BEFORE THE TOURNAMENT

It was the kind of bold move he was brought in to make, but it could backfire spectacularly. “We coaches felt that the guys we chose are a little step ahead of Landon in certain areas,” Klinsmann said in a news conference after Donovan was cut. One of those players, apparent-

ly, was Julian Green, a 19-year-old prodigy with almost no professional first-team experience. Green is a perfect encapsulation of Klinsmann’s mandate. The youngster could have played for Germany, but the U.S. coach persuaded him to represent the nation of his birth. Green is not the player Donovan is now, but in the future, he could be even better. And ultimately, Klinsmann is in place to secure the USA’s soccer future. His oversight of the entire program and contract extension demonstrate as much. But in international soccer, it’s still all about the World Cup. Klinsmann’s future starts on Monday against Ghana. SETH VERTELNEY (FOR E XPRESS)

Neymar gave Brazil a winning start to its home World Cup, scoring twice to lead the host nation to a 3-1 come-from-behind victory over Croatia in the opening game on Thursday. Bra zil had a disast rous star t when defender Marcelo found his own net while trying to clear a low cross by Ivica Olic in the 11th minute, but Neymar then showed why the nation’s high hopes are all pinned on him. The 22-year-old forward equalized in the 29th by clearing a defender near midfield before making a run toward the edge of the area and firing a low shot that hit the post before going in. Brazil was then awarded a disputed penalty in the 71st minute after striker Fred went down inside the area under light contact, and Neymar scored the winner from the spot. Oscar slotted in the third in injury time. TALES A ZZONI (AP)

Hoyer Ahead Of Manziel In QB Battle NFL Browns coach Mike Pettine says Brian Hoyer is “securely ahead” in the quarterback competition, but his lead over Johnny Manziel isn’t “insurmountable.” Manziel, the 2012 Heisman Trophy winner from Texas A&M, was drafted in the first round by Cleveland. Pettine, however, says Hoyer is the starter entering next month’s training camp. Manziel has shown progress but is still learning the playbook. Pettine says it’s difficult to completely assess Hoyer, who has been kept out of 11-on-11 drills as a precaution while he recovers from offseason knee surgery. The coaching staff has been judging the two quarterbacks during practice, but Pettine says “at this point, we really weren’t keeping score. We’ll be much more apt to do that once we get to training camp.” TOM WITHERS (AP)

Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel is behind Brian Hoyer on the depth chart.

Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III, who will be entering his third season, will be learning a new offense under first-year coach Jay Gruden, who was hired in January.

Offense Looks for Direction Choosing an offensive identity isn’t going to be a quick decision for the Redskins. They’ve spent offseason camps trying to decide if they’re a passing team or a running team … or both. “Coach says we’re going to huddle up and try to play smashmouth football and going to no-huddle and play smashmouth football,” quarterback Robert Griffin III said. “We’ll By Rick be multiple and see Snider what we do best.” The offseason has been about chemistry between new coach Jay Gruden’s offense, a quarterback finally healthy and an incoming receiver who figures to be the team’s biggest touchdown threat. Meanwhile, there’s the NFL’s leading receiver and a now-healthy tight end to incorporate, plus a running back

who gained 2,888 yards over his first two seasons. “The storylines don’t all lead back to me, and that’s fine,” Griffin said. Gruden has an advantage many coaches don’t when taking over a 3-13 team — a ready offense. The old scheme has been more massaged than scrapped because a healthy Griffin — plus new receivers DeSean Jackson and Andre Roberts alongside Pierre Garcon — could make Washington one of the NFL’s top offenses. “Hopefully, it’s diversity,” Gruden said of the offense’s strength. “The ability to be able to run the ball effectively and have a quick passing game, have

some bootlegs, having some deep passing threats, not knowing exactly what is going to happen.” But it all depends on Griffin incorporating the new system. Given how quickly he learned the previous system as a rookie, it’s not expected to be a problem. “There’s a lot of new plays, formations,” Gruden said. “He’s done an excellent job as far as his command of the huddle — that’s always been a positive of his — spitting out the plays and not having many [mistakes] at all. “When you’ve only played two years at the quarterback position, you know you’re

going to have your growing pains from time to time. … [Quarterbacks] just have to continue to come out here and work, see the look, see the defenses and attack. And he’s doing a good job of that.” Gruden is working on Griffin’s footwork and decisionmaking. One play that was intercepted at Tuesday’s practice was completed on Wednesday. It won’t be easy to keep all of the Redskins’ offensive weapons happy. Garcon will likely remain the leading receiver, but Jackson makes big plays, Roberts is trying not to be overlooked, and Jordan Reed is the team’s best tight end in years. And Alfred Morris will get his carries, too. No wonder Griffin’s excited by the possibilities. Rick Snider has covered Washington sports since 1978. Follow him on Twitter @Snide_Remarks

express | Friday, June 13, 2014 | Your guide to D.C.-area apartments and home rentals

Moving Is for Suckers Some local tenants are giving new meaning to the phrase ‘long-term rental’ Renter Lessons Marcos Huerta hates moving. Really hates it. So in each city he’s lived in since college, the 35-year-old government employee has found one apartment and stayed there. He’s been in his Kalorama apartment in D.C. for more than six years. And he has no plans to leave. “I know people who seem to move every year, and that just boggles my mind. I’m like, ‘Oh my God.’ I’m just not a fan,” he says. Huerta belongs to the rare breed of Washington renter that has found his or her ideal habitat in the harsh D.C. rental climate. New neighbors and rent hikes have not been enough to persuade him to move out. And owning a house or condo doesn’t sound appealing. “I thought a lot about buying and have concluded it’s not for me, at least not at this stage of my life,” he says. “Plus, whenever I price it out, I would basically be paying the same I am now.” Except, he adds, he would have “huge debt” — and wouldn’t be able to move as easily, if he wanted to. But for him, moving’s not likely to happen anytime soon. And Huerta isn’t the only Washingtonian perfectly pleased with his rental situation. Take Chinaka Young, 31, a public relations specialist: She isn’t planning to leave the Fairfax Village apartment in Southeast D.C. where she’s lived since 2008. And then there’s Patrick Spray, ALLIE GHAMAN (EXPRESS)

Lasting Renters Continued from page R1

58, an IT professional, who thinks of his two-bedroom Riverdale Park, Md., house as home after renting it for nearly 14 years. Here are some of the factors that have kept these marathon tenants happy for the long haul — and what you can learn from them if you’re sick of changing rentals and considering staying put.

UP AND COMING News, tips and points of interest in the local rental scene from The Washington Post. FAIRFA X

Plans Aim to Turn Prison Site Into Residences The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors last week began clearing the way for a $188 million overhaul of the former Lorton Prison site that, when finished, will house residents and new businesses inside refurbished cellblocks, guard towers and prison dorms. In a 10 to 0 vote on June 3, the board approved rezoning the site to allow for development that Lorton residents have long awaited. The mostly privately financed

project to build townhouses, apartments, single-family homes and retail space on the prison grounds is set to break ground sometime after October on about 80 acres currently owned by the county, officials said. Pending a 30-day public comment period, the county plans to transfer parts of that land to the project’s developers, The Alexander Company and Elm Street Communities, a county spokesman said. The project, geared toward historic preservation and dubbed Laurel Hill by county officials, will also include 110,000 square feet of retail and office space and a 20,000-square-foot public space inside the former prison’s chapel. It is part of a rebranding effort meant to erase the yearslong stigma in an area that houses the District’s penitentiary, landfills and heavy industry. The project is expected to be finished in 2020. few problems she’s had, and if he were unavailable, her building has maintenance crews on site. “Now that I’m saying it out loud, I’m like, ‘Wow, he’s really awesome,’ ” Young says.

Is the Rent Right? Whether your rent fits your budget is another major factor. Spray’s landlord didn’t raise the $1,200 rent he set in 2000 until Spray volunteered to start paying $250 more

per month in 2007 to keep up with the market. Young’s landlord charges her $1,100 per month for her two-bedroom, 700-square-foot apartment, even though the unit upstairs is rented for more, she says. He hasn’t raised the rent since Young moved in, because he likes that she doesn’t complain a lot and keeps the place clean, she says. As for Huerta, his apartment is rent-controlled, which means D.C. caps how much and how often landlords can raise the rent. His rent has gone up to $1,811, from $1,470 in 2008 when he moved in. The most recent time it increased, Huerta says, he researched rents in Kalorama and elsewhere in D.C. “I concluded that it was quite competitive, so I did not pull the trigger [on moving out],” he says. The Ideal Setting Paying the right amount and having a good landlord won’t matter if your rental isn’t in an area you want to call home. Young says she likes her neighborhood’s vibe, and crime isn’t a worry. “I’m a creature of habit. If I don’t need to fix it, I’m good,” she says. She admits she has thought about moving. But, she says, she thinks: “Where am I going to go where I’m going to find such a good deal?” LIZ ESSLEY WHY TE (FOR E XPRESS)

Landlord Relations The D.C. area is rich in rentals, so finding a gem of a landlord can seem like throwing a dart at a target. Still, it can be done, and it is one key to lasting rental happiness. Huerta, Young and Spray all say they have no complaints about their landlords, and even have good relationships with them. Spray’s landlord lets him handle repairs and has allowed him to add ramps to the 1,600-square-foot house for his and his wife’s wheelchairs. He also allowed Spray to delay six months of rent payments when he lost his job and pay them back later over an 18-month period. “This guy is a good guy,” Spray says. “You need to find a land-

Urban Igloo, a residential real estate resource that helps renters find apartments and rental homes, says it is expanding its Washington-area territory. Founded in D.C. in 2009 by Rick Gersten, Urban Igloo (1808 I St. NW; 877-445-6632, urbanig loo.com) recently added real estate agents with local market knowledge to cover the Brookland neighborhood in Northeast Washington, Columbia Heights, Petworth and Bethesda and other Montgomery County communities. The company, which also offers market information and tips for landlords and renters, also plans to expand its business to Anne Arundel County and Reston. ( T WP)

A Bunch of 60s at U.S. Open? Kaymer shoots 65 in favorable conditions for first-round lead

There was something unusual in the opening round of the U.S. Open. A bunch of scores in the 60s. The best one of all was turned in by Martin Kaymer. His confidence spurred by a win at The Players Championship, Kaymer birdied three of the last five holes Thursday for a 5-under 65, the lowest score from any of the three Opens played at Pinehurst No. 2. The German got up and down for par at the 18th hole, rolling in a testy 6-foot putt to beat the 66 shot by Sweden’s Peter Hedblom during the second round in 2005. Graeme McDowell, Kevin Na and Brendon de Jonge were three shots back. Kaymer beat a loaded field at The Players last month, snapping a stretch of 29 tournaments without a victory stretching over 18 months.

Martin Kaymer raced to the first-round lead Thursday after shooting a 5-under.

“I needed a win,” Kaymer said. “Whether it was The Players or a regular PGA Tour event, I just needed it for my confidence, for all the hard work I’ve put in the last couple of years.” Ten other players were in the clubhouse at 69, meaning there were more under-par rounds in this opening round than the last

two years combined. At Merion a year ago, only five players broke par on Thursday. At Olympic Club in 2012, there were just six scores in the 60s. No one expected Pinehurst to stay this inviting through the weekend. “There was some moisture on the greens and you were able to

hold shots,” Na said. “I was able to capitalize on a good tee time. But there’s a long way to go. Obviously, I’m 2-under par right now, but at the end of the tournament even par is going to win this championship.” That’s still a good bet. The last two Open champions finished over par. Phil Mickelson got off to a strong start as well in his bid for the career Grand Slam, attacking the course with deft iron shots on the way to a 70. After thick cloud cover made things easier for the morning players, the blistering sun broke through and the temperature climbed to 90 by mid-afternoon. Still, there were low scores to be had, with 20-year-old Jordan Spieth, Dustin Johnson, Matt Kuchar and Henrik Stenson among the big group at 69. Not everyone was thriving. The world’s top-ranked player, Adam Scott, shot 73. Masters champion Bubba Watson sprayed shots all over the place on the way to a 76. PAUL NEWBERRY (AP)

Nats Fail to Complete the Sweep Tim Hudson threw seven strong innings and left with a major league-best 1.81 ERA as the San Francisco Giants avoided a fourgame sweep, beating the Nationals 7-1 on Thursday. Michael Morse got three hits and scored twice for the Giants, who had a five-game winning streak before Washington came to town. The Nationals have lost just twice in 10 games. Hudson (7-2) allowed one unearned run and six hits. He walked two, struck out five and improved to 3-0 in his past five starts, which includes a suspended game. The Giants are 7-0 in games Hudson has started at home.

Baseball

Nationals leadoff hitter Denard Span was 0-for-4 with a strikeout Thursday.

Blake Treinen (0-3) remained winless at the major league level despite a 2.08 ERA. He gave up two runs and five hits in five innings. Pinch-hitter Hector Sanchez

had a two-run single for the Giants. Adam LaRoche drove in a run for the Nationals. Jose Lobaton, making his third consecutive start behind the plate, added two hits. Hudson allowed two or fewer runs for the 10th time in 13 starts. He beat the Nationals for the 17th time, the most of any active player, in 30 starts. Treinen, who replaced the injured Gio Gonzalez in the starting rotation, has pitched against tough competition. The four starters he’s faced have combined for 14 opening day starts. The Nationals’ lone run came in the fourth when Jayson Werth singled, took second on a passed ball and scored on LaRoche’s single. RICK EYMER (AP)

Spain faces the Netherlands on Friday.

Day 2 Features Final Rematch World Cup Spain’s team is creeping up in age and its core of Barcelona players are coming off a forgettable season. Yet coach Vicente del Bosque expects his defending champions to hit form quickly against the Netherlands in the World Cup on Friday. The rematch of the 2010 final, won by Spain 1-0, provides Group B with a riveting opener that could have an impact on each team’s chances in Brazil. “This is a mature team with players in their prime. They aren’t here for what they have achieved, but what t hey w ill achieve,” del Bosque said. Spain is the tournament’s most experienced squad, but those veterans are not ready for the winning run they started at Euro 2008 to come to an end in South America. “Our team has a strong desire to go as far as possible and to defend this title, which won’t be easy. The pressure motivates us,” goalkeeper Iker Casillas said. PAUL LOGOTHETIS (AP)

A U.S. Open Tribute No, that wasn’t Payne Stewart out there — just Rickie Fowler dressed like him. On Thursday at the U.S. Open, Fowler wore white plusfour knickers and knee-high argyle socks — the same outfit that was the trademark of the late Stewart. Stewart won the first U.S. Open held at Pinehurst No. 2 in 1999, but died four months later in a plane crash. (AP)

THE REELIST

KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY

Laugh at That Body Let’s talk about the impressive physical attributes of Channing Tatum. Oh, not like that. Get your mind out of the gutter. OK, like that. But just for a minute.

Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum turned their friendship into chemistry Film “21 Jump Street” started off as an intentionally bad idea. Jonah Hill called up Channing Tatum: “So I have this probably terrible idea, but I want to see if you’re interested,” he said. The movie, a send-up of TV show adaptations while at the same time being one, was a hit. Now, Hill and Tatum are back with “22 Jump Street,” which again showcases the pair’s undeniable rapport. In an interview, Hill and Tatum reflected on their chemistry.

THE WEINSTEIN COMPANY

And we’re back. Tatum returns in “22 Jump Street” (opening Friday), a very funny successor to 2012’s very funny “21 Jump Street.” And he’s better than he was in the first one, even though he keeps his shirt on much of the time. T he bulk of his comedy here comes from his earnestness — as the lunkheaded Jenko, he’s rarely in on the joke — but it’s very clear that Tatum is one of the best physical comedians working today. “22 Jump Street” plays more to this particular strength than the first film did. While most of the humor just illustrates the difference between Jenko and his less-fit partner Schmidt (Jonah Hill. Two-time Academy Award nominee Jonah Hill. Why can I never get my mind around that?), what really shows off Tatum’s gift for slapstick are the smaller moments. There’s one scene where he rolls off the back of a couch. It’s an easy move; you or I could do it, especially if there was a pad underneath to protect our impossibly good-looking faces. But when Tatum hits the top, he kicks his legs out. It’s a conscious move — Tatum is a trained dancer, so not much about his body happens by accident — but one that isn’t necessary to carry him over the couch. It’s also not the kind of move a director tells you to do. I’m willing to bet real money he did it just because he knew on an instinctual level it would be funny. The rolling is scripted and easy; the kick is impromptu and takes talent. It’s tough to find good-looking guys

A Partnership In Parodies

Did you know early on how good your chemistry was? When it comes to “22 Jump Street,” go to look at Channing Tatum’s, right, impressive physique, stay to laugh at Channing Tatum’s impressive physique. Oh, and Jonah Hill, too.

‘22 Jump Street’ (R) Directors: Phil Lord and Christopher Miller Stars: Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill and Ice Cube In a Nutshell: Having gone undercover as high school students, two goofy police officers are assigned another secret task: investigating a drug ring at a local college by posing as undergrads.

who can really do physical comedy; Keaton and Chaplin, who set the bar by which all others are measured, weren’t heartthrobs. Johnny Depp can do it; most of his Jack Sparrow performances are largely based on the physical. Tatum might be better, though. I can’t believe I’m writing this, but

in “22 Jump Street” he reminded me of Cary Grant. (Shut up.) A professional acrobat at 15, Grant used his body not only in comedies to great effect (like in “Arsenic and Old Lace” and “The Philadelphia Story”) but also later, when he was a more “serious” actor (he skulks in “North by Northwest” like no one has skulked before or since). Channing Tatum isn’t Cary Grant, but it took a long time for Cary Grant to be Cary Grant. Tatum should stop with the dumb action fi lms and the dumber tearjerkers and wait for the films that show off the talent behind all those muscles. Read Kristen Page-Kirby’s previous columns at: washingtonpost.com/ thereelist

Jonah Hill: I think we got lucky. We knew we would get along, but also the way we interact is luckily funny.

Your careers overlap in many ways. For example, you both have terrible things done to you in “This Is the End.” Channing Tatum: It was like 2 in the morning … and I hear

my email go off. … It’s Seth [Rogen] and he’s like, “Don’t be mad at me. We’re sitting here and we have a crazy idea for a cameo for you that involves you, Danny McBride, a retractable dog leash and a Mexican wrestling mask.” And I was like, “I’m in.” In the time you’ve been making the “Jump Street” movies, your careers have both exploded. I was in my bed at home and I got an email with the first “Foxcatcher” review from Cannes. … And I knew what that meant for the road they’re about to go on. The storyline caused a problem for DeBlois and his team — well, a lot of problems, since each dragon is unique. “We created a system where our designers were able to take different bodies and different heads and different necks and different tails and make them sort of a mix-andmatch system,” DeBlois says. “It was like a Lego set.” Then each one had to go to the animators, whose job it was to make the dragons f ly — but believably. “We want the dragons to feel like they’re a part of the animal kingdom, so we reference a lot of

That goes not only for Hiccup, who’s feeling pressure to step up and succeed his father as chief, but also for Toothless. “They’re both coming into their own, both reaching a point of maturity,” DeBlois says. “Physically as well as personalit ywise, they are defining themselves. Mike Myers’ directorial debut details the unlikely ascent of entertainment manager Shep Gordon beginning after a failed career as a probation officer. According to Gordon (whose memories are admittedly a little hazy), it was Jimi Hendrix’s idea for Gordon to become a manager. His client list grew to include Alice Cooper, with whom Gordon went on to have a lifelong friendship, Pink Floyd (if only for a few days) and Teddy Pendergrass. The

Film Dean DeBlois isn’t crazy — he knows dragons aren’t real. But the writer-director of “How to Train Your Dragon 2” (and co-director of the 2010 original hit) has spent years with the flying beasts, and he clearly has them on the brain. “They’re real to us,” DeBlois says of the creative team behind the animated films. “The longer you live with the dragons, the more specific their personality becomes. Someone might pitch out an idea of ‘What if Toothless [the central dragon] were to do this?’ and we would collectively say, ‘No, that’s not Toothless.’ We know enough about Toothless as a character now to know what would be right and something that wouldn’t work.” The sequel, out Friday, picks up five years after the first film. Hiccup (voiced by Jay Baruchel) and his Viking clan are living in harmony with the dragons (who spent most of their time in the first movie torching the village). Hiccup and Toothless in particular spend their time traveling to now-accessible distant lands; they

A Gross Growth Spurt Beneath the obscenity, ‘Obvious Child’s’ adults are trying to grow up

‘Obvious Child’ (R) Director: Gillian Robespierre Stars: Jenny Slate, Jake Lacy and Gaby Hoffmann In a Nutshell: A 20-something stand-up comedian is forced into growing up when she must decide whether to get an abortion for an unplanned pregnancy.

From the first words out of her filthy, brazenly irreverent mouth, the stand-up comedian Donna Stern goes there. Working a room of Brooklyn hipsters in a cramped club on open-mic night, she doesn’t just work blue: She works teal, azure and shades of aquamarine that haven’t even been discovered on the light spectrum yet. “Obvious Child,” a provocative romantic comedy from new writerdirector Gillian Robespierre, opens with Stern doing one of her bits, giddily sharing the most intimate secrets of her day-old lingerie like a cross between sweet-faced, foulmouthed Amy Schumer and Jerry Seinfeld. Donna is played by “Saturday Night Live” alum Jenny Slate, who possesses the same good-girl cuteness of Schumer and Sarah Silverman, and the same shocking subversive streak.

Film Review

Jenny Slate, left, is probably saying something crass to Jake Lacy.

The queasy, prudish and easily offended should be forewarned that Robespierre, like so many of her contemporaries, clearly sees profanity as a legitimate arrow in

the quiver of liberation, a mode of bracing, confrontational candor that instantly disarms fusty structures of sexism and other depredations. When Donna’s best friend,

Nellie (Gaby Hoffmann), uses a common epithet for the female anatomy to fulminate against the Supreme Court, she’s appropriating the rhetoric of oppression and using it to strike back. T hat ’s one read i ng. Seen through another lens, Donna and her friends’ constant swearing and nattering on about sex and other bodily functions resembles a group of little kids seeing just how much they can get away with before being sent to permanent timeout. That immaturity is at the core of “Obvious Child,” in which Donna gets dumped, loses her job and faces an unplanned pregnancy after a drunken one-night stand. The

‘The Signal’ leads its viewers on a sci-fi trip with not much payoff Film Review Two of the major plot turns in “The Signal” — a good-looking sci-fi thriller with more fashion sense than brains — hinge on misdirection involving simple arithmetic and spelling. When each moment arrives, it’s cheapened by the implicit insult to the audience’s intelligence. The twists feel less like jolts of genuine surprise than like

being had by a third-grader with a good knock-knock joke. The movie starts straightforward enough, with MIT students Nic (Brenton Thwaites) and Jonah (Beau Knapp) driving cross-country to drop off Nic’s girlfriend, Haley (Olivia Cooke), at school in California. The next thing we know, a battered Nic is waking up in a secure underground facility staffed by hazmat-suited scientists who experiment on cattle. Haley is in a coma, and Jonah has been locked away out of sight, able only to communicate with Nic through the air vents.

FOCUS FEATURES

This Story Could Use an Upgrade Brenton Thwaites, left, and Beau Knapp really shouldn’t use computers in there.

‘The Signal’ (PG-13) Director: William Eubank Stars: Brenton Thwaites, Olivia Cooke and Lawrence Fishburne In a Nutshell: Three college students on a cross-country road trip are drawn by a technical genius into a mysterious science program with little chance of escape.

Or is this all in Nic’s head? “Jonah was never here,” insists the facility’s sphinxlike chief scientist (Laurence Fishburne), a man given to speaking in cryptic riddles and answering Nic’s questions about what’s going on with evasions worthy of a Washington press secretary. “Due to circumstances surrounding your condi-

whole point of the film is that she’s unformed, using her 20s to experiment and make mistakes and, in the case of deciding whether to terminate her pregnancy, make the decisions that will ultimately create a more experienced — maybe even wiser and more compassionate — human being. That balance — between annoying, cavalier self-involvement and genuine vulnerability and growth — is what keeps “Obvious Child” interesting, making it one of the most startlingly honest romantic comedies to appear onscreen in years. Donna and her friends aren’t always likable: They’re spiky and unremittingly coarse, making viewers of a certain age long for just a little more softness between them. Through it all, even despite her crankiest, most selfish moments, Donna earns the audience’s support, thanks largely to the inherent sweetness Slate brings to her screwed-up but lovable character. There are as many awkward, discomfiting sequences in “Obvious Child” as there are interludes of fun and romance. The result is a movie that feels risky and forgiving and, despite its traditional rom-com contours, refreshingly new. A N N H O R N A D AY (THE WASHINGTON POST )

tion,” he says, “I’m afraid that our information is extremely limited.” That last statement, at least, is an apt description of the film, which also parcels out expository details with extreme stinginess. I’ll say one thing: The general state of confusion fostered by the headscratching plot is a surprisingly effective way of maintaining continued engagement with it — if by “engagement” you mean “This better lead somewhere.” On paper, “The Signal’s” formula is a good one. If handled well, it could really pay off. Unfortunately, the figures that the filmmakers plug in to their calculations — which involve elements from sources as disparate as “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” and “The Matrix” — don’t add up to much. Manolo says what does the Manolo think about the “mandals”? In the word, “no!” In the four words, “Don’t go there, girlfriend!” No one wishes to see the toes of the 60-year-old man. Not even your mother, who has spent the past 34 years in love with this hard-working man who now pulls the pants up around his armpits. Why do you think she does all of that exaggerated sighing whenever your father puts on the cargo shorts and the sandals and suggests that they go to the Home Depot for the Saturday outing?

“It’s become the Uber way: Government tells Uber it is breaking the law. Uber ostensibly ignores the government. Uber rallies customers in support of the company. Government changes the law.”

to defend any drivers cited for disobeying the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles’ cease and desist order is in keeping with the private ride service’s business plan of attack in new markets.

“But for today’s generation, social media, selfies and porn are the major vectors of the male desire to be desired. They want to be wanted for their bodies, not their wardrobe. And certainly not their minds.”

“The books are, on the whole, as interesting as any book ever can be when somebody has tried to write it so that it’s impossible to use against him later — which is to say, they have all the stylistic flair of the Wikipedia entry on graham crackers.”

Simpson writes that the metrosexual “male desire to be desired” – he originally coined the phrase in 1994 – has evolved into an ultra-sexual obsession to “photoshop themselves in real life.” His example: David Beckham, above in an ad for his H&M underwear line.

“Nothing good ever comes from random ‘hi gorgeous’ texts.” — BRIAN McGANNON AT POSTGRAD PROBLEMS.COM offers one of many

lessons to be learned from one Tinder user’s epic misstep. “Joshua” had collected phone numbers from 32 women on Tinder, an app that connects users who like each other’s profiles and pictures. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Giving another a chance at a victory will surely make you feel good, and it will win you the admiration of one who has been on the periphery. CANCER (June 21-July 22) You’ll be answering all kinds of questions from all kinds of people throughout much of the day. The information you impart must be accurate. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Your own opinions — based on experience, of course — may prove more valuable than facts to some people who are curious about what you do. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You’ll receive the go-ahead for something you have long been planning. The actual start date, however, may be a few days away. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) How you put together your ideas in a coherent form will take precedence over elements of personal style; you must be clear, concise and direct.

FOUR RACK TOTAL Make a 2-7-letter word from the letters in each row. Add points of each word using scoring directions at right. Seven-letter words get a 50-point bonus. Blank tiles used as any letter have no point value. Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro in the U.S. and Canada.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You’re likely to have a more direct influence over certain activities than you have had in the past. Exert it with care! SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Questions of probability will surely come to the fore. Focus on anything that keeps you actively involved in the game.

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.
