;dZe\MWh_dI_]^j After a lengthy discussion on the sidelines of the NATO summit with Afghan President Hamid Karzai, President Obama said the end of the war is in sight. The military alliance is pledged to remain in Afghanistan into 2013 but will seal plans this week. 9^_YW]e President Obama and NATO allies declared Sunday that the end of the long and unpopular Afghanistan war is in sight even as they struggled to hold their fighting force together in the face of dwindling patience and shaky unity. From his hometown and the city where his re-election operation hums, Obama spoke of a post-2014 world when “the Afghan war as we understand it is over.” Until then, though, remaining U.S. and allied troops face the continued likelihood of fierce combat. “We still have a lot of work to do, and there will be great challenges ahead,” Obama said. Gen. John Allen, the top commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan, offered a stern warning Sunday that the plan to give Afghan forces the lead in fighting next summer won’t take coalition troops out of harm’s way. “It doesn’t mean that we won’t be fighting,” Allen said. “It doesn’t mean that there won’t be combat.” The fate of the war is both the center of this summit and a topic no one is celebrating as a mission accomplished. Meanwhile, thousands of protesters marched through downtown Chicago on Sunday in one of the city’s largest demonstrations in years, airing grievances about war, climate change and a wide range of other complaints as world leaders assembled for a NATO summit. A majority of Americans now say the war is unwinnable or not worth continuing. Exonerations Registry Created New archive shows more than 2,000 wrongly convicted MWi^_d]jed More than 2,000 people who were falsely convicted of serious crimes have been exonerated in the United States in the past 23 years, according to a new archive compiled at two universities. There is no official record-keeping system for exonerations of convicted criminals in the country, so academics set one up. The new national registry, or database, painstakingly assembled by the University of Michigan Law School and the Center on Wrongful Convictions at Northwestern University School of Law, is the most complete list of exonerations ever compiled. “We know there are many more that we haven’t found,” added University of Michigan law professor Samuel Gross, the editor of the
J^[IYef[e\j^[FheXb[c The newly created National Registry of Exonerations begins at the start of 1989. It gives an unprecedented view of the scope of the problem of wrongful convictions in the United States, and the figure of more than 2,000 exonerations “is a good start,” said Rob Warden, executive director of the Center on Wrongful Convictions. The registry excludes at least 1,170 additional defendants. Their convictions were thrown out starting in 1995 amid the periodic exposures of 13 major police scandals around the country. In all the cases, police officers fabricated crimes, usually by planting drugs or guns on innocent defendants. (AP)
newly opened National Registry of Exonerations. The database compiled and analyzed by the researchers contains information on 873 exonerations for which they have the most detailed evidence. The researchers are aware of nearly 1,200 other exonerations, for which they have less data. They found that those 873 exonerated defendants spent a combined total of more than 10,000 years in prison, an average of more than 11 years each. Nine out of 10 of them are men and half are Afri-
can-American. Nearly half of the 873 exonerations were homicide cases, including 101 death sentences. Over one-third of the cases were sexual assaults. Seven percent of the exonerations were drug, white-collar and other nonviolent crimes, 5 percent were robberies and 5 percent were other types of violent crimes. “It used to be that almost all the exonerations we knew about were murder and rape cases. We’re finally beginning to see beyond that. This is a sea change,” said Gross. PETE YOST (AP)

Scott Walker in a June 5 recall election, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel has endorsed the Republican governor over Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett. Some studies suggest newspaper endorsements can swing votes. (THE WASHINGTON POST )
Robin Gibb, a founding member of the Bee Gees who helped propel the group to international stardom, has died. He was 62. “The family of Robin Gibb, of the Bee Gees, announce with great sadness that Robin passed away today following his long battle with cancer and intestinal surgery,” family spokesman Doug Wright said in a statement. “The family have asked that their privacy is respected at this very difficult time.” Gibb was one of three brothers whose soaring falsetto harmonies helped power such hits as “Stayin’ Alive” and “Night Fever.” The band was best known for the influential “Saturday Night Fever” soundtrack album that became one of the fastest selling albums of all time. The 1977 soundtrack came to epitomize the flashy disco era.

‘No Real Closure’ Lockerbie families still seek answers after bomber’s death

lies of victims and still believes alMegrahi was not responsible for the bombing. In 2007, an investigation by a Scottish tribunal found that new evidence — and old evidence withheld from trial — suggested that al-Megrahi “may have suffered a miscarriage of justice.” Even those who believed alMegrahi did take part in the bomb-
ing say his death still leaves questions unanswered. “It closes a chapter but it doesn’t close the book. We know he wasn’t the only person involved,” Frank Dugan, president of the group Victims of Pan Am Flight 103, said. “I’m glad he’s gone, but there’s no real closure,” Eileen Walsh, a Glen Rock, N.J., resident whose father, brother and sister died in the bombing. “There’s nothing but a bad taste in my mouth.” Al-Megrahi’s death should not be an excuse to stop trying to find out who was behind the bombing, she added. After Moammar Gadhafi’s fall last year, Britain asked Libya’s new rulers to help fully investigate, but they put off any probe. VERENA DOBNIK AND MEER A SELVA (AP)
Abdel Baset al-Megrahi, a former Libyan intelligence officer who was the only person ever convicted in the 1988 Lockerbie bombing, died at home in Tripoli on Sunday. He was 60. Scotland released al-Megrahi on Aug. 20, 2009, on compassionate grounds to let him return home to die after he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, much to the outrage of the relatives of the attack’s 270 victims. AlMegrahi had insisted he was innocent, but he kept a strict silence after his release. (AP)
D[mOeha For relatives of the people who died in the Lockerbie bombing, the death Sunday of the only man who was convicted stirred up questions once again about his guilt and whether others went unpunished. It also gave families a chance to reissue pleas for further investigation. Abdel Baset al-Megrahi, a Libyan intelligence official, died of complications from cancer, a relative said. Al-Megrahi was convicted of blowing up Flight 103 over the Scottish town on Dec. 21, 1988, which killed 270 people, many of them New York and New Jersey residents. The families had banded together after the bombing, immersing themselves in terrorist policy, international relations and airline security and lobbying for compensation from Libya. But their views on alMegrahi’s role in the bombing are far from uniform. “Megrahi is the 271st victim of Lockerbie,” said David Ben-Ayreah, who represents some British fami-

MehbZ Palestinians Set Plan for Coalition
HWcWbbW^"M[ij8Wda Palestinian rivals Hamas and Fatah agreed on Sunday on a new timetable for a power-sharing deal that envisions elections in about six months, officials from both sides said. Reconciliation efforts have stalled repeatedly, and it is unclear if the latest agreement, brokered by Egypt, would end the impasse. The Islamic militant Hamas seized Gaza from Fatah’s leader, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, in 2007, leaving him with only the West Bank. Earlier this year, Abbas and Hamas’ supreme leader, Khaled Mashaal, agreed that the Palestinian president should head an inter-

Classic route: Interstate 95 to I-295, across the Delaware Memorial Bridge to the New Jersey Turnpike to northern New Jersey approaches to New York (about 227 miles). Alternatives: Consider I-95 to I-695, just before Baltimore, to I-83 to York and Harrisburg, Pa., then I-81 to I-78. Options include staying on I-78 across New Jersey toward New York City, or taking a more northerly course, following Route 22 just before Allentown, Pa., to Route 33 to I-80 across the top of New Jersey.
Travel tip: Approaching the Newark, Del., toll plaza, the two left lanes will take you to the highwayspeed E-ZPass toll readers. Those lanes put the easy in E-ZPass, but Delaware still can be nasty at peak periods, especially around the exits for routes 1 and 7.
Classic route: I-270 to I-70 west to I-68 west to Exit 14A at Keysers Ridge and follow Route 219 south (about 180 miles). Alternative: Between Frederick and Route 219, try portions of Route 144 and Alternate 40, most of which is the Historic National Road. Take it to enjoy a different drive to Western Maryland but not to save time. Travel tip: Maryland’s major roads, including I-270, I-70 and routes 15 and 40, pass through a bottleneck at Frederick. Try to avoid starting your trip between 1 and 8 p.m. Fridays, have a map to review options on detours and be patient.
Classic route: Route 50 east to Ocean City (about 150 miles). Alternative: There really isn’t a good highway alternative to the Ocean Gateway (Route 50). Around Wye Mills, Route 404 branches east from Route 50 and heads for Rehoboth Beach on the Delaware shore, but it’s narrow and crowded. Travel tip: The HOV lanes on
Route 50 are HOV all the time. The best Bay Bridge travel times for summer weekend getaways are Thursdays before 10 a.m. and after 10 p.m., Fridays before 10 a.m. and after 10 p.m., Saturdays before 7 a.m. and after 5 p.m., Sundays before 10 a.m. and after 10 p.m., and holiday Mondays before 10 a.m. and after 10 p.m.
Classic route: I-95 south, to I-295 south, to I-64 east, to I-664 south, then I-64 to Exit 292 for Chesapeake Expressway/I-464/ Route 17. Then keep left to continue to the Chesapeake Expressway (Route 168) and take Nags Head/ Great Bridge Exit 291B to routes 168 and 158 and the Outer Banks (about 270 miles to Kitty Hawk). Alternatives: After Fredericksburg, some I-95 drivers pick up Route 17 south at Exit 126 and take it to I-64 in the Hampton Roads area. Others take the I-295 bypass around Richmond into the Petersburg area, then take Exit 50 to Route 460 east. Travel tip: Virginia has widened I-95 in southern Fairfax County. Even so, Friday afternoon traffic south of D.C. can be stop-and-go to Fredericksburg. Either leave by 11 a.m. or wait until after 8 p.m. Even better, head out between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. Saturday. Despite this fact, the two roommates have, in the course of a week, transformed one of the District’s most popular mobile vendors into one of the most despised. It started on May 11 with Franklin’s semicrude “Open Letter to the ‘Fojol’ Bro-dawgs” on Facebook and continued with Viscarra’s online petition at Change.org, which demanded that the Fojol Bros. “[r]espect Asian and African cultures — stop the brownface minstrel act!” The Fojol employees wear turbans and fake bushy mustaches and assume mythical personas from the lands of “Merlindia” and “Benethiopia” — all while peddling dishes inspired by the cuisines of India, Ethiopia and Thailand. Some have berated themselves for not speaking up before now, even though they’ve been troubled by the trucks’ carnival-like shtick from the beginning. “I’m a little embarrassed that I didn’t say something or at least boycott the truck on my own,” wrote one petition-signer. Others, however, fret that the District has become such a politically correct zone that no one — not even young entrepreneurs with a clear affection for international cuisines — can playfully incorporate the symbols and clothing of another culture without being accused of racism. “We’ve reached the point where no one can do anything funny/ edgy without shrill idiots getting ‘Offended,’ ” wrote one commenter on a Huffington Post story about the Fojol Bros. crisis. Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley, D, has long promised that the D.C. suburbs and Baltimore would each get a new light-rail line and that the Purple Line and its counterpart in Charm City could be built at the same time. But financial documents recently submitted to the Federal Transit Administration show that O’Malley’s promise will be difficult — if not impossible — to keep. The General Assembly’s recent rejection of the governor’s proposed gas-tax hike makes it likely that the state will have to choose to build one of the lines before the other, state and local transportation officials say.
With no new tax revenue dedicated to transportation, finding the money for even one of the light-rail lines will be difficult, the officials say. The state hoped to begin construction on both lines in 2015, with the 16-mile Purple Line opening between Bethesda and New Carrollton by late 2020 and the 14-mile Baltimore Red Line opening in early 2021. But construction of the runner-up project probably would be delayed at least five years. When asked whether Maryland could afford to build both at once without a gas-tax increase, state Transportation Secretary Beverley Swaim-Staley said, “Probably no.” (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Newlyweds and couples moving toward marriage, take note. Love, as it turns out, is not all you need. Not if your goal is to avoid the No. 1 reason marriages end in divorce: money problems. “Mature, responsible conversations about money are a sign of a marriage that’s going to be healthy and wonderful and enduring,” says Brooke Salvini, a certified financial planner based in San Louis Obispo, Calif. Failing to create and stick to a mutually agreed upon budget can lead to marital strife. Start off by listing monthly income. Be sure

Although splitting household costs may work early on in a relationship, it can breed resentment in a marriage when one spouse makes a lot more money than the other. First lady Michelle Obama’s spree of television appearances this year included an appearance on Ellen DeGeneres’ talk show, “Ellen,” in February.
Meet Mrs. Popular The first lady holds the spotlight as a likable force for Obama’s campaign MWi^_d]jed As the presidential campaign ramped up earlier t his year, Michelle Obama presented poet Maya Angelou with an award and a hug at the BET Honors award show. Two days later, she danced on an episode of “iCarly,” a tweens sitcom. She is on television almost as much as her husband is. But as ubiquitous as the first lady has become, she also has carved out a distinct role in President Obama’s re-election campaign and in the country: innocuous cheerleader, steering clear of the tough, hot-button issues and carrying no hint of political liability that occasionally worried the campaign in 2008. In an era where it is not a stretch to anticipate a woman as president, how closely Michelle Obama hews
to the traditional role of first lady is being watched closely for clues about how much and how little things have changed for high-profile political spouses. According to a campaign aide, the first lady’s playbook for the rest of the election season will be to avoid policy and political debates. After a rocky start to the 2008 campaign, when critics cast her as overly opinionated and strident, aides

helped remake her into a beloved, noncontroversial first lady. The campaign is determined to maintain her overwhelming popularity by keeping her away from the ugly polarization of modern politics. David Axelrod, senior strategist
for the campaign, said even when the first lady promotes her own issues, it benefits the campaign. “Anytime she’s out there is helpful,” he said. “We want her out there as much as we can get her time.” And she is out there. She has spoken at more than 50 fundraisers, raising millions of dollars, and she has held conference calls with campaign volunteers and groups. But critics warn of a downside: Such “aggressive exposure may dilute the power of her pres-
IekdZi<Wc_b_Wh Ann Romney, is doing the same thing for her husband, presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney, as Michelle Obama is doing for her husband — softening the tough edges on his image and making him a more likable candidate. Particularly after Democratic strategist Hilary Rosen’s remark in April that Romney had “never worked a day in her life,” the candidate’s wife has taken a more visible role on the campaign trail — something she had shied away from doing after a rocky introduction to stumping during her husband’s 1994 Senate bid. ence,” said Republican consultant Mary Matalin. The traditional niche of supportive spouse remains the safest place for Michelle Obama, agreed Katherine Jellison, a history professor at Ohio University. Public assertion of her political views — or emphasis on her Ivy League degrees and professional experience — could detract from her charm as a momin-chief and advocate for children and families. “It pains me to say that, because I would like women to be able to go out on the campaign trail and just say, ‘This is what I believe,’ ” Jellison said. Some Republicans suggest that Michelle Obama’s impact on Obama’s campaign is overstated. “Her popularity is not transferable,” said Ari Fleischer, who served as press secretary for President George W. Bush. “There’s no history that says it is.” Still, she will continue to fill the role of devoted spouse and mother — and pop-culture icon. “The more people see and get to know the first lady, the more they like her, and that is a huge benefit to the president,” said Jen Psaki, former White House deputy communications director. KRISSAH THOMPSON (THE WASHINGTON POST )
;l[h=hem_d] On Saturday, while President Obama hosted G-8 leaders at Camp David, Michelle Obama joined their spouses at the White House for a lunch prepared with produce from the White House garden she helped plant. Now her team is getting ready for her next push: On May 29, she will release her first book — “American Grown: The Story of the White House Kitchen Garden and Gardens Across America.” Her television appearances will continue with a spot on the Food Network’s “Restaurant Impossible” in June, and she will also serve as a headliner at the Democratic party convention. Stephen Strasburg took a swing and looked in amazement as the baseball carried over the leftfield wall. If St rasburg’s f irst major league homer came as a surpr ise, h is performance on the mound did not. He said it relaxed a bit and was a lot better. I’m not as concerned when it’s in the biceps.” Strasburg attributed the soreness in part to working too hard in the days following his previous start, in which he lasted four innings in a loss to the San Diego Padres. “The biceps is fi ne,” he said. “It’s just throwing a lot of pitches early, then we put up a lot of runs and stuff. “Shocking, that’s for sure,” Strasburg said of his clout. “I feel like in [batting practice] I have to swing a lot harder to hit it out. I just somehow ran into one.” He was almost embarrassed about his trip around the bases and subsequent climb up the dugout steps. “I’m not big for going out there and showboating,” Strasburg said. The hard-throwing Strasburg had five hits in 40 big league atbats before Sunday. He singled and scored in the third inning, then followed a shot by Jesus Flores with one of his own in the fourth. “I didn’t expect Stras to hit a breaking ball,” Johnson said. “He doesn’t usually see breaking balls. [Third-base coach] Bo Porter came in after and said we found a left fielder.” Known more for his pitching than his hitting, Strasburg excelled at both. The right-hander allowed three runs, one earned, four hits and a walk in his first career appearance against Baltimore. He retired the last 10 batters he faced. Since returning from elbow ligament replacement surgery last September, Strasburg is 5-2 with a 1.99 ERA in 14 starts. Danny Espinosa also homered, and Bryce Harper drove in two runs and scored three for the Nationals. DAVID GINSBURG (AP)

COURTESY JOEL STEIN
7 NEW FILM
MAY 18-20; SOURCE: BOXOFFICEMOJO.COM
Stein did something he never thought he would when his wife got pregnant: He freaked out because the baby was a boy. There would be camping trips and footballs to throw! Never an outdoorsman, always anxious, Stein decided to pen a manly bucket-list book to overcome his fears. He did a 24-hour shift with firefighters, knocked back scotch, went hunting and survived three days of Army boot camp. So what’d he learn? “I think being a man today means less than it used to. It will always mean less than it used to. ... It’s still some version of being able to stick up for yourself and people around you, and it’s still about being selfsufficient in every way.”
In his latest com-doc “Mansome,” Spurlock takes on male grooming, enlisting the motherload of funny guys: Judd Apatow, Paul Rudd, Zach Galifianakis and “Arrested Development” brothers Jason Bateman and Will Arnett, both of whom are executive producers. And Spurlock thinks the point is? “Men are in a position now where we’re being marketed to and targeted in the same way that women have for decades, where suddenly men aren’t good enough,” he says. “Suddenly you’re too fat. Suddenly your skin’s too ugly, you don’t have enough hair. ... All in this effort to try and push this commodification of manhood.”
ÇI_dY[ ?^Wl[ [nfh[ii[Z j^Wj?WcW cWdm_j^coX[WhZ" ?ZedÊj^Wl[jeeh [l[d\[[bj^[Z[i_h[ jeh[boedieY_Wbbo YedijhkYj[Z\ehci e\cWiYkb_d_jo$È — JACK PA SSION, AUTHOR OF “THE FACIAL HAIR HANDBOOK.” PASSION, 28, STARTED GROWING A BEARD AT AGE 19 AND NOW SPORTS ONE THAT HANGS TO HIS WAIST.
In “Mansome,” he and Will Arnett don spa robes, compare shaving techniques, get side-by-side pedicures and facials, take a soak together and try to keep the manly talk light. What does Bateman think is funny about manhood? “The men who are speaking about it or presenting it are trying to avoid embarrassment and taking the subject, or themselves, too seriously.” Asked to get serious for just a sec, Bateman admits he doesn’t have an answer for what it means to be a man. “I try to be the best man I know how to be, which is just to kind of listen to myself and make the decisions that I’m instinctually drawn to make as opposed to having any sort of premeditated agenda.” Jason Bateman, left, and Will Arnett get beautiful in “Mansome.”
Zevin lived in Brooklyn, N.Y., as a stay-athome dad of two. And wrote a book about it. He eventually left Aloof Hipster Dad in his Brooklyn playground and moved to suburban Larchmont, where he frequents Costco and uploads YouTube interviews he does from his minivan. What surprised Zevin about staying home with his kids? “I thought it was going to be easy. ... We’re just learning as we go along. Our dads weren’t the role models. This is all new to us, this more-involved fatherhood.”

7FW_d\kb=eeZXo[ <_dWb[i The Fox medical drama <EN /0&& “House” concludes its eight-season run Monday with a series finale at 9 p.m., preceded by a one-hour retrospective. And with that, Hugh Laurie will be done as the show’s abrasive champion, Dr. Gregory House — unless, Laurie adds with a laugh, “someone comes up with an idea
for a stage musical.” “I feel a huge satisfaction that we got to the end with our dignity intact,” he declares. “I never felt that we did anything that wasn’t true to the character or the show — like, ‘House gets a puppy.’” No doubt. Sure, the medical mysteries that formed the core of most episodes inevitably grew a bit formulaic as the seasons piled up. But if the rhythm of the investigation began to feel overfamiliar, House never did. On the contrary: He is only more complex, obstreperous and fascinating. Monday’s finale, says Laurie,

In 2010, there were an estimated 216 million cases of malaria worldwide. Currently, there is no effective malaria vaccine. Healthy adults 18 to 45 years old are needed to participate in a malaria vaccine research study. This study tests if an experimental vaccine is safe and can prevent infection following exposure to the malaria parasite. If the vaccine does not prevent infection and volunteers develop malaria symptoms, they will receive immediate treatment which is curative. Study volunteers will be compensated for their participation, estimated to last between 12 and 52 weeks. To volunteer, call 1-866-833-LIFE (toll-free) or TTY 1-866-411-1010, email email@example.com, or visit www.vrc.nih.gov.
