The woman, who moments earlier had been forcing a smile for the visiting general and the congressmen, burst into tears. Her brother, a young private first class, lay in a hospital bed a few feet away, one of the victims of last week’s mass shooting at Fort Hood.

He was conscious but unable to talk because of a breathing tube.

Lt. Gen. Mark Milley wrapped his arms around the woman and tried to console her outside the hospital room. “I’ve been in a lot of combat zones,” he said. “I’ve seen a lot of wounded and injured soldiers.

An Australian ship detected two distinct, long-lasting sounds underwater that are consistent with the pings from aircraft black boxes in a major break in the monthlong hunt for the missing Malaysia Airlines jet, the search coordinator said Monday.

Navy specialists were urgently trying to pick up the signal again so they can triangulate its position and go to the next step of sending an unmanned miniature submarine into the depths to try to identify plane wreckage.

Little time is left to locate the devices, which have beacons that emit “pings” so they can be more easily found. The beacons’ batteries last only about a month — and today marks exactly one month since the plane disappeared during a flight from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to Beijing with 239 people on board.

Previous Dead Ends The pings heard by an Australian ship aren’t the first lead in the hunt for Flight 370. Here are a few that haven’t panned out.

‘Surge Pricing’ Could Come to Taxicabs Under a proposal, cabs could cost more if hailed from an app Washington D.C. could become one of the first U.S. cities to allow its cab drivers to ignore their meters and adjust fares depending on demand.

D.C. Council members Mary Cheh and David Grosso have introduced legislation that would allow the city’s taxi drivers to embrace so-called “surge pricing,” a practice already being used by popular car services such as Uber, in which prices are adjusted in real-

time according to demand.

The Council members say the shift, which would apply only to instances where passengers use their smartphones or tablets to book a ride, will allow traditional cabs to better compete with a bevy of new app-based ride services.

The move could benefit riders by allowing them to comparison shop between services. But surge pricing also has its critics who say the model can lead to price gouging.

Under the proposal, passengers who book via a mobile app would be told ahead of time what they can expect to pay. The price would not be set by individual cab drivers, but rather by the mobile dispatch ser-

The commission has come under criticism from some for being slow to embrace the alternative services. But commission Chairman Ron Linton said the panel’s goal is to create a level playing field.

Council, Gray Spar Over Budget Battle could define a lame-duck year for the outgoing mayor Washington D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray’s final spending plan could force steep budget cuts after he leaves office, D.C. Council members warned Monday, marking a tense start to a budget battle likely to set the tone for the remainder of Gray’s term.

Gray said savings from proposed reforms would cover the small difference in the $10.7-billion budget. If the recent economic expansion continues, Gray also said, tax revenue growth would make the spending a non-issue altogether.

But Council Chairman Phil Mendelson launched a tough, four-hour

question-and-answer session with Gray saying the budget maneuver set up a potential “time bomb” that could leave the District $200 million in the red.

The city’s new chief financial officer, Jeffrey DeWitt, backed up Gray, saying the city would have time to make adjustments to balance the budget if more revenue or savings does not materialize. But the

council’s first public hearing with Gray since the election made clear the budget would be a fight, and that little might come easy for Gray during a 9-month lame-duck period.

The tension over the administration’s spending plan was magnified in questioning by Council members Muriel Bowser, the Democratic nominee for mayor, and David Catania, who is running for mayor as an independent.

Bowser said Gray’s budget could tie the hands of the “next mayor,” leaving Gray’s successor to identify needed cuts and limit the funding for more big-ticket projects like additional school construction.

Busyness has become not just a way of life but a status symbol

38M The number of Americans who shop on their smartphones while sitting on the toilet, according to a 2012 survey on multitasking.

This story is adapted from Brigid Schulte’s book “Overwhelmed: Work, Love, and Play When No One Has the Time.” Schulte is a writer for The Washington Post.

One man says he works 72 hours a week because everyone else at his office does; he’s thinking about cutting back on sleep so he can be more productive.

A woman says the last time she had a moment for herself was when she went for her annual mammogram. Another says she has decided that life is too hectic to have kids — ever.

Then a woman bursts in, apologizing for being late to this focus group convened precisely to discuss the fast pace of modern life. She got stuck in traffic, she explains.

This is not New York, Washington, Los Angeles or another frenetic, Type A city. It’s Fargo, N.D. “Life is stressful in Fargo,” Ann Burnett, a researcher who convened the focus group, said. “People are going nuts.’’

Somewhere around the end of the 20th century, busyness became not just a way of life but a badge of honor.

And life, sociologists say, became an exhausting everydayathon. People now tell pollsters that they’re too busy to register to vote, too busy to date, to make friends outside the office, to take a vacation, to sleep, to have sex.

People compete over being busy; it’s about showing status.

“If you’re busy, you’re important.

You’re leading a full and worthy life,” Burnett says. Keeping up with the Joneses used to be about money, cars and homes. Now, she explains, “if you’re not as busy as the Joneses, you’d better get cracking.”

to show that at our most idle, our brains are most open to creativity — and history proves that great works of art, philosophy and invention were created during leisure time — we resist taking time off. Psychologists treat burnedout clients who can’t shake the notion that the busier you are, the faster you work, and the more you multitask, the more you are considered competent, smart, successful. It’s the Protestant work ethic in overdrive.

In the Middle Ages, this kind of frenzy — called acedia, the opposite of sloth — was one of Catholicism’s seven deadly sins. But today, busyness is seen as so valuable that peo-

ple are actually happier when they’re busy, says Christopher Hsee, a psychologist and professor of behavioral science at the University of Chicago.

“If people remain idle, they are miserable,” he wrote in Psychological Science in 2010. “If idle people become busy, they will be happier.”

Then and Now Life in the early 21st century wasn’t supposed to be so hectic. In a 1930 essay, economist John Maynard Keynes predicted a 15-hour workweek by 2030, when we’d all have time to enjoy “the hour and the day virtuously and well.”

Ann Burnett, a communications professor at North Dakota State University, has studied a trove of holiday letters she’s collected stretching back to the 1960s that serves as an archive of the rise of American busyness. She says that words and phrases that began surfacing in the 1970s and 1980s — “hectic,” “whirlwind,” “consumed,” “crazy,” “constantly on the run” and “way too fast” — now appear with astonishing frequency. War II boom in productivity, along with rising incomes and standards of living, led economists and politicians to predict that by 1990, Americans would work 22 hours a week, six months a year, and retire before age 40.

While accepting the Republican Party’s nomination for president in 1956, Dwight D. Eisenhower envisioned a world where “leisure … will be abundant, so that all can develop the life of the spirit, of reflection, of religion, of the arts, of the full realization of the good things of the world.”

Leisure for all was exactly what the labor movement had been pursuing for more than a century. As late as 1923, the steel industry required 12-hour shifts, seven days a week. Finally, it seemed, workers were about to savor shorter workweeks. So, what happened?

First: Life got more expensive, and wages failed to keep up. (College tuition alone jumped 1,120 percent from 1978 to 2012.) Until 1975, wages made up 50 percent of GDP; in 2012, they were 43.5 percent.

Second: Jobs have become less mechanical and work more creative.

New York University sociologist Dalton Conley argues that today’s knowledge-economy professions in art, technology, engineering and academics are similar to the pursuits of the mind that the ancient Greek philosophers envisioned as leisure. So, some of us work a lot because we enjoy it.

“Work has become central in our lives, answering the religious questions of ‘Who are you?’ and ‘How do you find meaning and purpose in your life?’ ” Ben Hunnicutt, one of the few leisure scholars in America, said. “Leisure has been trivialized — something only silly girls want, to have time to shop and gossip.”

There’s another, deeper reason why we stay busy: People who have stepped off the hamster wheel long enough to savor everyday moments usually realize that their time on Earth is limited.

The Redskins did well in free agency. Snagging receiver DeSean Jackson from Philadelphia was a steal that might restore balance in the NFC East.

Regaining Ryan Clark at safety remedies one of the biggest mistakes of the Dan Snyder era, when Washington let Clark go in 2006 to instead sign Adam Archuleta. Clark fills a secondary void, though Washington still may need more help at safety.

Mostly, Gruden can get a feel on the new lineup before the NFL draft starts May 8. The

Redskins need to know where to spend their second-round choice.

Is it a right tackle that could fit on a revamped line with newly acquired left guard Shawn Lauvao and Kory Lichtensteiger moving to center? Do they need another safety or inside linebacker instead?

But like everything else at Redskins Park, it’s really about watching quarterback Robert Griffin III. The brace is off, and the knee is healed. He’ll have a full offseason of workouts after spending last year rehabbing. The next two months are critical in his push to return to 2012-rookie-of-the-year form.

The Redskins are going nowhere without a productive

Gruden is hoping the horror films known as the 2013 game tapes were misleading.

Griffin. How quickly Gruden and Griffin mesh under this offensive system is critical.

Gruden must learn what to keep and what to toss from the playbook over the next two months.

After all his dueling with Shanahan, Griffin will unquestionably say how much he loves the new system and coach, but he has to mean it. Griffin must be honest with himself and Gruden about his real strengths and weaknesses.

With the addition of Jackson, Washington looks like an 8-8 team. Who knows, maybe they can steal another game and make the playoffs? They could also finish 6-10.

Gruden needs to spot weaknesses in the coming weeks and address them with the draft. The time to build a winner is now.

A Perfect Title Game Matchup Women’s Basketball After a season-long buildup, the women’s NCAA tournament will be decided by the perfect championship game.

This season’s undefeated titans will meet today (8:30 p.m., ESPN) in a historic championship game when UConn plays Notre Dame. It will mark the first time in NCAA basketball history that unbeaten teams will play for a title.

“It is pretty amazing,” Irish coach Muffet McGraw said after her team beat Maryland 87-61.

“So many of the media and fans have been looking at this all season long.”

The former Big East rivals didn’t play during the regular season for the first time since 1995 as Notre Dame moved to the ACC. The Irish (37-0) are one of the rare teams that has had success against the Huskies, winning seven of the past nine meetings. The Huskies (39-0) won the last one though, topping Notre Dame in the Final Four last season en route to the school’s eighth national title.

Barring a series of miraculous events, the Capitals are going to miss the playoffs for the first time since 2007.

Washington has made six consecutive postseason appearances, tied for the fourth-longest active streak in the league entering this season. But the Capitals could be eliminated from playoff contention as early as today.

A regulation loss to the Blues combined with a Blue Jackets victory against the Coyotes and at least one point for the Red Wings against the Sabres would mathematically eliminate the Capitals.

“It’s hard not to feel kind of weird,” defenseman Karl Alzner said of the Capitals’ current predicament. “The years I’ve been here, we’re used to making the playoffs, used to having a team that’s been able to compete. We haven’t been nearly good enough this year.”

For most of the season, the Wizards’ safe zone for the best chance to win a playoff series was anywhere between third and sixth.

The Wizards (40-37) are cur-

rently sixth in the Eastern Conference and will need to defeat the Charlotte Bobcats on Wednesday if they have any plans of holding on to that spot. A loss would give the Bobcats (39-38) the tiebreaker in their season series if the teams finish with the same record.

In the past few weeks, however, the seventh seed doesn’t seem so daunting given that the Pacers have lost eight of 11 and now trail the Heat by one game for first place in the conference.

These exercises paid off for Baumgartner, who was able to keep his cool during the jump even when he began spinning rapidly.

Breaking the sound barrier took years of training for daredevil Felix Baumgartner It doesn’t matter how many times people watch the video clip of Felix Baumgartner jumping from a height of 128,000 feet and plummeting back to Earth faster than the speed of sound. The moment he steps into the air, a physiological response kicks in: Muscles tense, hearts beat faster, breathing changes.

“They still get sweaty hands,” Baumgartner, 44, says with a smirk. “But I survived.”

More than 8 million people worldwide watched the Austrian skydiver complete his historic feat live on Oct. 14, 2012. And it’s now being shown on repeat at the National Air and Space Museum’s new exhibit “Red Bull Stratos: Mission to the Edge of Space.”

project. Baumgartner’s attempt to best the then-existing record jump of 102,800 feet — completed in 1960 by Joseph Kittinger — required assembling a team of top engineers, physicians and other experts (Kittinger included).

The success of all of their work rested with Baumgartner. So, as soon as he dreamed up this idea in 2005 and persuaded sponsor Red Bull to fund it, the pressure was on.

Despite Baumgartner’s daredevil résumé and muscular physique, he wasn’t a natural for the challenge.

“I’m a sprinter,” Baumgartner says. “I like short distances, and going 100 percent. I want to be able to see the end.”

This jump was the equivalent of an ultramarathon. For five years, Baumgartner was completely immersed in preparation, which required studying, traveling, los-

ing sleep and tolerating various uncomfortable positions. To pull through, he needed to boost his endurance significantly.

Because he hated running, Baumgartner decided to turn to cycling for cardio. While looking for a bike, he had a chance run-in with Andy Walshe, who’s coached the U.S. Olympic ski and snowboard teams. The high-performance specialist was soon directing Baumgartner’s training.

Walshe says his first step with any athlete is to understand what he or she wants to accomplish. In Baumgartner’s case, “the combination was unique,” but the elements were standard, Walshe says.

There was a clear strength component: The suit that was necessary to preserve Baumgartner’s life was heavy and hard to move in.

“I don’t think people realize that to even lift your arms is exhausting,” says Walshe, who also helped Baumgartner adjust to the psychological weight of the equipment.

The fact that scientists have that data is an example of how significant the feat was for future advances, says team medical director Jonathan B. Clark. If they could monitor Baumgartner, they can monitor people in other extreme environments.

Baumgartner’s more personal breakthrough? Figuring out what to eat before entering the stratosphere.

Neil Armstrong’s pre-moon meal was steak and eggs, but Baumgartner couldn’t stomach that. Instead, he downed protein shakes.

Chances are he’ll use a similar strategy to fuel up before his next stunt — June’s Nurburgring 24-hour race in Germany. Baumgartner has never raced cars before, but he’s not worried. He’s used to going pretty fast. VICK Y HALLET T (E XPRESS)

JJ Smith's diet plan inspires thousands to bond with a blender

When author JJ Smith developed her latest nutrition plan, she hoped it would have fast results. But even she wasn’t expecting to lose 200,000 pounds in three months.

That’s an average of 10 pounds for each of the estimated 20,000 people — and counting — who’ve completed the program in her book, “10-Day Green Smoothie Cleanse” ($17). And based on the positive feedback that floods her Facebook group, her number could be accurate.

Smith, 44, who lives in Arlington, Va., designed the cleanse for herself as a way to detox after mercur y poisoning in 2013. Because Smith didn’t want to embark on the regimen alone, she contacted friends and family to see if anyone else was interested. One hundred of them said yes.

That was just this past January.

After seeing successful results, she quickly wrote a paperback about it. As of Monday, the book was the No. 2 bestseller on Amazon.com.

Smith didn’t invent green smoothies, so what makes her plan special? The choices, she says. Readers can do the full cleanse, which is three smoothies a day, plus highprotein snacks (hard-boiled eggs, nuts) and unlimited crunchy vegetables. Or, they can do a modified version, with two smoothies a day, snacks and a meal (salad, veggies and chicken or fish). No matter which they pick, they won’t starve.

“In one drink, there are more nutrients than a lot of people get in a week,” says Smith, noting that the high fiber content works wonders on a digestive tract.

Because it can be tough to make such a big change, Smith recommends starting on a Friday: “As

your body adjusts, you’re going to be irritable. By the fourth day, you’re feeling better. By the eighth day, you want to do it two more weeks.”

Smith still advises switching back to a more solid diet after 10 days — a lt hough a green smoothie or two a day can continue to be part of a lifestyle for years, she adds.

Pam Booker, 47, of Bowie, Md., is a believer: “Everything she said would happen, it happened to me.”

Since doing the cleanse in February with 20 women in her Zumba class, Booker has shed 30 pounds and her worst food habits. (“I have no desire for bread now,” Booker says.) Her only concern about the plan is that it’s too popular: “Frozen fruit is so hard to get.”

Just in time for the Washington Nationals’ new season, MASN fixture F.P. Santangelo has a new look.

The 46-year-old color analyst — and former pro baseball player — dropped more than 20 pounds during the offseason, going from about 190 to less than 170. He overhauled his diet by embracing homemade vegetable juice and organic everything, and eliminating almost all meat and alcohol.

He bought a road bike and bega n r unning more t ha n 100 miles a month. He had to have all of his suits altered before returning to television, and ordered a raft of new shirts to fit his new figure.

And he’s kind of having the time of his life.

“I just decided to make a lifestyle change,” he said, while chugging a green juice. “I want everybody to feel like this. It’s amazing.

You have energy throughout the day, you feel good throughout the day, and I can’t believe I haven’t done it sooner. It’s life-altering.”

Which is why Santangelo is now thinking about sharing his epiphany with Nats’ fans. He is considering launching a “Run ’Til They Tag You” fitness group that would meet at Nats Park once a week, doing group runs and group workouts

When Santangelo wakes up in the morning, he heads to the fridge and throws ingredients such as kale, spinach, cucumbers, celery, carrots, apples, lemon, cilantro and ginger into his juicer. And even with six months of ballparks and hotel rooms and press boxes in his future, Santangelo has no worries about being tempted by pizza and fries.

Obituary Mickey Rooney’s approach to life was simple: “Let’s put on a show!”

He spent nine decades doing it, on the big screen, on television, on stage and in his extravagant personal life.

Rooney died Sunday at age 93 surrounded by family in his North Hollywood home, police said.

A superstar in his youth, Rooney was Hollywood’s top box-office draw in the late 1930s to early 1940s. He followed his stints as the vexing but wholesome Andy Hardy and as Judy Garland’s musical comrade in arms with roles in “National Velvet” and “The Bold and the Brave.”

Over a four-decade span, he was nominated for four Academy Awards, and received two special Oscars for film achievements, won an Emmy for his TV movie “Bill” and had a Tony nomination for his Broadway smash “Sugar Babies.”

Rooney married eight times, including once to Ava Gardner, and had nine children.

He was shooting a movie at the time of his death, “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.”

Let’s look at four of the most crucial elements in great title sequences and how they work to memorable, unskippable effect in some of today’s best intros, as explained by the people who brought them to life.

Plotting the Narrative Road Map A strong title sequence tells viewers where the narrative is about to take them — sometimes literally, as in the sequence that opens HBO’s “Game of Thrones.” The weekly journey through the story’s terrain is a nod to the maps that appear in the “A Song of Ice and Fire” books on which the show is based. “We were trying to orient the viewer to what’s going on location-wise,” says Jennifer Sofio Hall, executive producer at Elastic, the studio behind the sequence. The locations on that map vary depending on where an episode’s plot plans to take the viewer, turning the titles into a weekly sneak preview.

Avoiding Title Tropes Increasingly, the creators of title sequences rely on unfamiliar im-

agery to anchor their work. For Netflix’s “Orange Is the New Black,” the Thomas Cobb Group created a sequence that features tightly framed shots of the wide smiles and haunted eyes that belong to women who actually served time.

The sequence’s director, founder Thomas Cobb, gave the women three directives: Think of a peaceful place, think of a person who makes you laugh, and think of something you want to forget. “It was a very intense day,” Cobb says.

The Power of an Unforgettable Song “Far From Any Road” — the track by alt-country duo the Handsome Family that accompanies the title of HBO’s “True Detective” — is a song that seeps into your molecules.

Elastic paired it with haunting imagery: a 3-D-projected blend of stars

Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson with shots of Louisiana country and strippers’ backsides. It earned the top honor for excellence in title design at this year’s South by Southwest Film Festival.

Iconic Imagery As Imaginary Forces managing partner and creative director Peter Frankfurt explains, AMC’s “Mad Men” creator Matthew Weiner envisioned an opening with a live-action Don Draper, who travels to his office only to jump out the window.

Frankfurt’s team turned that idea into a motion graphic sequence.

The result — a sequence of a silhouette free-falling past vintage ads — became the indelible mark of “Mad Men.” “You never set out to make something iconic,” Frankfurt says. “A lot of what makes something iconic is repetition.”

Album Review Of all contemporary country singers, Martina McBride seems the most well-suited to interpret classic soul tunes. The four-time Country Music Association female vocalist of the year has shown repeatedly that she can find the depth in emotionally complex material.

Still, on her new album, “Everlasting,” McBride begs comparison with such giants as Aretha Franklin and Sam Cooke by taking on

their most potent performances and material. Working with producer Don Was, who brings an understated R&B pulse to the songs, McBride leans on vulnerability and purity of tone rather than the growling, rapturous release of the originals.

McBride presents severa l impressive performances, turning Little Walter’s “My Babe” into a funky, sexy love song and Fred Neil’s “Little Bit of Rain” into a tender treatise on separation that lightens the dark tones of versions by Linda Ronstadt and Karen Dalton.

Her honey voice works well with others, too, as she proves on duets with Gavin DeGraw (on “Bring It Home to Me”) and Kelly Clarkson

That said, these takes lack the fierceness of Otis Redding’s “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long” and Elvis Presley’s “Suspicious Minds” or the ecstatic joy of Van Morrison’s “Wild Night” and Diana Ross on The Supremes’ “Come See About Me.” McBride offers up pleasantly listenable versions of baby boomer standards on “Everlasting,” an album that will please her fans and spice up her concerts but won’t replace any of the originals on the mixtapes of R&B fans.
