Hands in the Air Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater has come a long way — the first performance by what’s now the nation’s premier black dance troupe was at New York’s 92nd Street Y. The dressing rooms are a lot nicer at the Kennedy Center, where the company will be performing both new works and beloved classics, including “Revelations.” Kennedy Center, 2700 F St. NW; through Sun., $30-$120; 202-467-4600; Kennedy-center.org. (Foggy Bottom)

A New Kind Of New Mutiny “Shakespeare’s R&J” takes the most famous story of forbidden love and makes it forbidden again. The play revolves around four young men who find a copy of “Romeo and Juliet,” banned in their school, and read it to one another in secret. Complications (and coming of age) predictably ensue. Signature Theatre, 4200 Campbell Ave., Arlington; through March 3, $29$75; 703-820-9771, Signature -theatre.org.
