Personal trainer Helen Smith, 35, of Southampton, England, is trying to boost her business by offering nude workout classes, the Mirror reported. The debut Saturday attracted 10 people ages 33 to 70 for jumping jacks, sit-ups, push-ups and — this could be especially awkward — “partner work.” She said nude workouts cut down on laundry and aid learning. “You can really see what the instructor is doing in the exercises,” Smith said. Residents of Jersey Shore, Pa., were baffled about what made their town stink. Some people thought their propane tanks were leaking, or that the sewer system had backed up. But WNEP-TV found the culprit was a field of radishes planted by T. A. Seeds, a company in nearby Nippenose Township. The crops normally don’t decay until the spring thaw, but they rotted earlier this year because of unusually warm temperatures. (AP)

page three From slaughter to new home RESCUES The shy and shaggy Sapsaree puppy at the Alexandria animal shelter seems healthy and happy, a far cry from how she looked two years ago when she arrived from a dog meat farm in South Korea. Her fate until then was slaughter, her flesh and bones destined to be used as meat or in soup. Emaciated and suffering from a broken leg, probably from confinement in a metal cage, the 5-month-old puppy was named “Minnow” by the deputy director of the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria, Abbie Hubbard, who adopted her. Minnow is one of 770 dogs rescued so far as part of a worldwide campaign to end the practice of raising dogs for human consumption in South Korea. About 200 rescues landed at Washington Dulles International Airport earlier this month. There are an estimated 17,000 dog meat farms in South Korea, animal rights activists say. The industry dates back centuries, and in Korean culture, soups

and other dishes made with dog meat are considered delicacies. The Humane Society International says it has provided money and counseling to six farmers who have gotten out of the dogmeat business in the past two years. Dogs from those farms have been shipped to animal shelters throughout North America, and Washington-area residents have adopted about 100 of them over the past two years. Many dogs rescued from Korea are not used to human touch,

“The dogs are in very small spaces. It’s loud — the presence of people is not usual, and the dogs are stressed.” ABBIE HUBBARD, deputy director of the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria, after visiting a dog meat farm in South Korea

and others have obsessive behaviors, said Hubbard of the Alexandria shelter, which has three Korean dogs — Roo, Daisy and Tulip — available for adoption. “Our staff has learned a lot about working with dogs with severe behavior issues,” she said. Hubbard pulled Minnow out of a cage after she had been delivered to the shelter Jan. 6, 2015, and fell “in love instantly.” But it took the puppy some time to adapt to her new circumstances. “The first time I brought her into my home, she just shook,” Hubbard recalled. Minnow is still easily spooked. For example, she was comfortable in the shelter’s outdoor play area until a new grill was installed, which she found frightening. But she has become Hubbard’s closest companion, resting her head in Hubbard’s lap when she’s driving, playing with kittens that Hubbard brings home from the shelter and sticking by her throughout her day. “Our hearts just connected. Our hearts are very, very old friends,” Hubbard said. “If she were a person, someone would say we need our own separate lives.” PATRICIA SULLIVAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Pollin and his longtime friend and partner Steve Czaban had reunited as “The Sports Reporters” in May of last year, doing a three-hour afternoon drive program. But his contract was set to expire in February, and he never got any indication that the Daniel Snyder-owned outlet was interested in a new deal. Metro budget gets a little breathing room

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA.

U-Va. president says she will retire next summer

Local governments put aside extra funds for beleaguered agency JESSICA KOURKOUNIS (GETTY IMAGES)

TRANSPORTATION D.C., Maryland and Northern Virginia have agreed to give Metro the extra money it has requested for its next budget, granting the transit agency a bit of financial breathing room as it works to improve safety and reliability. The key event came Wednesday, when Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan presented a budget that includes a $42 million increase in the state’s subsidy for Metro operations for the fiscal year that begins July 1. Northern Virginia officials had already said they viewed Metro’s request as reasonable, and D.C.’s support was never in doubt; Virginia was asked to increase its subsidy by nearly $40 million and the District by nearly $50 million. The three jurisdictions’ commitments mean that Metro can count on getting the extra money that General Manager Paul Wiedefeld sought in his $1.8 billion operating budget presented in October. Hogan authorized the increase without fanfare even though the Maryland transportation budget is tight, and he prefers to spend money on roads that serve his political base in rural and outer suburban communities.

MUSEUMS

Metro saw near-record ridership on Saturday for the Women’s March on Washington, trailing only Obama’s 2009 inauguration in trips.

Analysts said Hogan may have acted partly to avoid a politically damaging battle with the Democratic-controlled General Assembly, where he risked being portrayed as an enemy of Metro. Democrats in the legislature said they plan to push Hogan to raise Maryland’s contribution even more, to allow Metro to avoid planned fare hikes and service cuts. But Maryland Transportation Secretary Pete Rahn cautioned the state wouldn’t go beyond what Metro has sought. “Governor Hogan and Secretary Rahn have been very clear about how they feel about these types of requests,” Rahn spokeswoman Erin Henson said. Northern Virginia officials also said they would oppose

$5.1M

increasing the subsidy beyond what Metro requested. But the increased subsidy this year relieves some pressure on agency at a critical time: Metro needs to complete its SafeTrack maintenance program and set up a federally mandated safety commission to provide oversight. Maryland Dels. Marc A. Korman and Kumar Barve, both Montgomery Democrats, called on Hogan to increase the subsidy — and persuade D.C. and Virginia to do the same — to reduce the negative impact on riders. Korman said that with Maryland’s agreement to the $42 million increase, “I hope the conversation can shift to what else Maryland can do to prevent harm to riders.” ROBERT McCARTNEY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Trump book pulled from Smithsonian The $50 book about Donald Trump was displayed at the very front of the National Museum of American History’s gift shop, its cover featuring the newly inaugurated president’s signature stare-and-hair. But “Donald Trump: 45th President of the United States Collector’s Vault,” written by Brandon Christopher Hall, 25, might not meet their standards for accuracy. The book contains a series of false assertions, including on Trump’s years of questioning President Obama’s citizenship and his history of charitable giving. It’s not clear how the book landed in the venerable museum, but on Saturday, the museum tweeted, “The book is no longer available for sale in our shops pending a review by our historians.” (TWP)

TOLL REVENUE

The decrease in the amount Maryland collected in tolls in 2016 from the previous year, according to a report from the Maryland Transportation Authority. The figures show Gov. Larry Hogan’s decision in 2015 to slash toll rates didn’t have much impact on the state’s bottom line. The Baltimore Sun reports the Bay Bridge had the biggest drop in toll revenue, collecting $28.1 million less in 2016 than in 2015. But a 9.4 increase in highway traffic meant the state largely made up that difference with tolls collected on other roads. The state collected more than $157 million in 2016, according to The Baltimore Sun. (AP)

The Baltimore Sun reports that the Court of Appeals issued the unanimous opinion on Friday. The General Assembly decriminalized pot in 2014. The driver was identified as David Brown, 25, of Ashburn. He’s been charged with reckless driving, and police said more charges are likely. Southeast twisters’ death toll rising 16 fatalities confirmed from tornadoes’ wrath in Georgia, Mississippi WEATHER Emergency responders rushed to answer new reports of deaths and injuries Sunday evening in southern Georgia as violent storms already blamed for killing 16 people in the Southeast continued to inflict destruction. Earlier Sunday, an apparent tornado blew through a mobile home park in Cook County in southern Georgia — sheering off siding, upending homes and killing seven people, officials said. An eighth death was reported in Cook County by state officials, although it was unclear whether that victim lived in the park.

An additional four people were killed Sunday in counties adjoining Cook. Four people also were killed in Mississippi by a tornado Saturday. The National Weather Service said southern Georgia, northern Florida and the corner of southeastern Alabama were on alert Sunday night for additional tornadoes. Long track tornadoes, somewhat rare and capable of staying on the ground for 20 or more miles, were possible. While the central part of the United States has a fairly defined tornado season — the spring — the risk of tornadoes is almost year-round in the Southeast, weather officials say. Netanyahu delays vote until he visits Trump ISRAEL Israel’s prime minister on Sunday accepted an invitation to visit the White House next month in hopes of forging a “common vision” for the region with President Trump that could include expanded settlement construction on occupied territories and a tougher policy toward Iran. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced his plans to head to Washington hours after delaying a vote on an explosive proposal to annex one of the West Bank’s largest settlements, apparently to coordinate his policy toward the Palestinians with the new administration. The move put on hold legislation that threatens to unleash violence and damage already faded

hopes for Palestinian independence. It also may have marked Trump’s first presidential foray into Middle East diplomacy. After eight years of frosty relations with President Barack Obama, Netanyahu has welcomed Trump’s election as an opportunity to strengthen ties between two allied nations. Netanyahu and Trump spoke by phone Sunday in a call that went “very nice,” the president said at the White House. With Trump signaling a more tolerant approach toward the much-maligned settlement movement, Israel’s right believes it now has an ally in the White House, and Israeli hard-line leaders aren’t hiding intentions to push for aggressive action

in the occupied West Bank and east Jerusalem — a policy that had been condemned by Obama. Education Minister Naftali Bennett, leader of the pro-settlement Jewish Home Party, has been pushing Netanyahu to abandon the internationally backed idea of a Palestinian state and to annex the Maaleh Adumim settlement near Jerusalem. But after convening his Security Cabinet on Sunday, Netanyahu said his ministers, including Bennett, decided “unanimously” to delay action until he goes to Washington to meet with Trump. Netanyahu’s office said the Cabinet would hold further discussions ahead of the meeting, which is expected in early February. JOSEF FEDERMAN (AP)

Officials said Sunday, at least 32 people were killed and 50 injured after a passenger train derailed in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. Seven coaches of the Hirakand Express were thrown off the tracks, some landing on a freight train on a parallel track. The counter inauguration

D.C. officials estimated that the Women’s March on Washington attracted more than 500,000 people, apparently more than Donald Trump’s inauguration.

MIKE COPPOLA (GETTY IMAGES)

THE DISTRICT More than 1 million people gathered in Washington and in cities around the country and the world Saturday to mount a roaring rejoinder to the inauguration of President Trump. What started as a Facebook post by a Hawaii retiree became an unprecedented international rebuke of a new president that packed more than 670 events in cities large and small — from London to Los Angeles, Paris to Park City, Utah, and Miami to Melbourne, Australia. The organizers of the Women’s March on Washington, who originally sought a permit for a gathering of 200,000, said Saturday that as many as half a million people participated. On Sunday, Metro officials announced that Saturday was the second-busiest day in the Washington subway system’s history, with 1,001,613 trips. (By contrast, on Trump’s Inauguration Day on Friday, the system recorded 570,557 trips.) The D.C. march attracted over 500,000 people, according to city officials — apparently more than Trump’s inauguration. It was easily one of the biggest demonstrations in the city’s history. Many in the nation’s capital and other cities said they were inspired to join because of Trump’s divisive campaign and his disparagement of women, minorities and immigrants. In signs and shouts, they mocked what they characterized as Trump’s lewd language and sexist demeanor. The marches provided a balm for those eager to immerse themselves in a like-minded sea of people who shared their

disappointment after Democrat Hillary Clinton’s historic bid for the presidency ended in defeat. “We just want to make sure that we’re heard,” said Mona Osuchukwu, 27, a D.C. native. “I want her to know that she has a voice,” she said of her 3-year-old daughter, Chioma, who was with her at the march. “No matter what anyone tells her, especially as a black woman in America.” On Sunday, President Trump fired back on Twitter: “Watched protests yesterday but was under

the impression that we just had an election! Why didn’t these people vote? Celebs hurt cause badly.” Later, he tweeted a more conciliatory take: “Peaceful protests are a hallmark of our democracy. Even if I don’t always agree, I recognize the rights of people to express their views.” Common to every gathering across the nation and world was fiery rhetoric, pink knit hats and repeated references to the boast that offended so many women: Trump’s taped comments in 2005

about groping women’s genitals. Among the thousands of signs that marchers dumped in front of Trump International Hotel, just blocks from his new home at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue: “This P---y Bites Back.” Protesters got as close as they could to the White House, crowding metal barriers less than a block away as police and Secret Service watched closely. Demonstrators came to Washington from around the country. The city issued about 1,800 bus

parking permits for the march, and Amtrak added extra trains in and out of Union Station. Although the marchers were mostly female and white, men and people of color also joined. The crowd delighted feminist and speaker Gloria Steinem, 82. “This is an outpouring of democracy like I’ve never seen in my very long life,” she said. D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, also a speaker, introduced herself as a proud “chick mayor” and implored the GOP majority in Congress to stop meddling in the District’s local lawmaking. The size of the gathering proved challenging. March organizers briefly considered suspending the formal march to the Ellipse out of concern that the crowd had grown too large to safely navigate the route to the White House. But speakers told the marchers to set out. D.C. police said they had made no march-related arrests. PERRY STEIN, STEVE HENDRIX AND ABIGAIL HAUSLOHNER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

POLITICS Scores of demonstrators charged with rioting in D.C. on Friday were well-organized, ready to confront police and prepared to violently disrupt the inauguration, according to some of the protesters and organizers. The disturbances that took place in a four-square-block area downtown included breaking windows on storefronts and setting a parked limousine on fire. More than 230 were arrested. Protesters made their first court appearances Saturday. Most of those charged faced a felony charge of rioting. The organizing group, DisruptJ20 — a collection of anti-capitalist, anti-fascist and progressive groups — had set up a detailed website before the protest and planned for a media spokesman and “street” medics. In court filings, police said protesters arrived armed with hammers and crowbars. Tom Faison, 22, a D.C. resident who was part of the protests, said a limousine set ablaze on K Street was attacked as an “explicit demonstration of our increasingly corporate state, which Trump’s presidency epitomizes.” Seventy of those facing rioting charges were from the District, Maryland or Virginia, and 24 were from other states, according to addresses provided after arrest. Court filings showed that the damage caused by the group exceeds $100,000. PETER

Size matters. But truth? Spicer’s first press conference offers a glimpse into President Trump’s war on media Conway: Trump won’t release his tax returns

with the media.” Trump had a contentious relationship with the media throughout his candidacy. He went 167 days without fielding questions from a full media contingent before ending the holdout on Jan. 11. During that first news conference, he got into a shouting match with a CNN reporter and refused to take a question from the news outlet. He has continually turned to Twitter to respond to what he views as an unfair portrayal by the media, and this rocky relationship with the press may only get worse. On Saturday, Spicer said there has been a lot of talk about holding the new president accountable for his actions. But Spicer said that “goes both ways.” “We’re going to hold the press accountable as well,” Spicer sa id. “ T he A mer ican people deserve better.”

POLITICS A senior aide to President Trump said Sunday that he won’t release his tax returns, a marked shift from Trump’s pledge during the campaign to make them public once an audit was completed. “The White House response is that he’s not going to release his tax returns,” said Kellyanne Conway, counselor to the president, on ABC’S “This Week with George Stephanopoulos.” “People didn’t care,” Conway added. “They voted for him, and let me make this very clear: Most Americans are very focused on what their tax returns will look like while President Trump is in office, not what his look like.” Presidents are not required to release their tax returns, but presidents dating back to Richard Nixon have routinely done so. Conway was questioned about a petition page on the White House website that allows citizens to ask officials to take up issues of importance to them. Under former president Barack Obama, the White House would note any actions related to petitions that garnered more than 100,000 signatures. As of Sunday morning, a petition for Trump to immediately release his tax returns had received more than 200,000 signatures. “President Trump and his family are complying with all the ethical rules, everything they need to do to step away from his businesses and be a full-time president,” said Conway.

POLITICS Donald Trump’s “running war” on the media is continuing into his presidency, with statements over the weekend calling into question the extent to which information from the White House can be trusted. Showing the new reality for the political media — and for the truth — during the President Trump era, White House press secretary Sean Spicer, on his first full day in that job, took the podium Saturday and made easily disproved claims about the size of Trump’s inauguration crowd. “Why put him out there for the very first time, in front of that podium, to utter a provable falsehood?” Chuck Todd of NBC/ MSNBC asked Kellyanne Conway, counselor to the president, on Sunday. “It’s a small thing, but the first time he confronts the public, it’s a falsehood?” Conway responded: “You’re saying it’s a falsehood, and they’re giving — our press secretary, Sean Spicer, gave alternative facts to that.” At this point, a visibly exasperated Todd cut in. “Wait a minute. Alternative facts? Alternative facts? Four of the five facts he uttered . . . were just not true. Alternative facts are not facts; they’re falsehoods.” Trump has claimed the crowd for his swearing-in stretched down the Mall to the Washington Monument. It did not. He said more than 1 million people showed up Friday, while many reports estimate the tally was closer to 250,000. Spicer also said it was the “largest audience to ever witness an inauguration, period,” even though a side-by-side comparison of aerial photos from both of Barack Obama’s inaugurations

clearly show that Obama’s crowds were much larger than Trump’s. Press secretaries have been lied to by their bosses, or misled reporters through the omission of information, but veteran journalist Dan Rather said Sunday it was the first time he could recall false material being delivered in this way. “I hope that people will stop, pull back for what we in television call a wide shot and see what is happening,” Rather said. “This is a deliberate propaganda campaign.” A press secretary whose word can’t be trusted has no value to anyone, said Terence Hunt, a longtime White House correspondent and editor for The Associated Press who recently retired. “You can’t tell lies in the White House,” Hunt said. “Somebody will smoke you out, on issues large and small. The president’s integrity and credibility are at stake in everything you say, so

Trump starts first week Reassuring Americans, the president declares ‘we will prove worthy of this moment in history’

Executive order on ACA creates more uncertainty

GETTY IMAGES

POLITICS After a combative start to his presidency, Donald Trump delivered a more unifying message Sunday and sought to reassure Americans he was up to the daunting task ahead, as he turned to the business of government. Speaking in the White House East Room during a swearingin ceremony for top aides, the president warned his staff of future challenges but declared he believed they were ready. “But with the faith in each other and the faith in God, we will get the job done,” the president said. “We will prove worthy of this moment in history. And I think it may very well be a great moment in history.” Trump’s reassurance came after a day marked by global protests against his presidency and his own complaints about media coverage of his inauguration. He said his staff was in the White House not to “help ourselves” but to “devote ourselves to the national good.” Trump held up the letter left to him by his predecessor, Barack Obama — a White House tradition. “It was really very nice of him to do that,” Trump said. “We will cherish that.” He said the contents will remain private. On Sunday, Trump announced that he’s set up meetings with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto. “We’re going to start some negotiations having to do with NAFTA,” along with immigration and security at the border, he

said of his meeting with Mexico. Trump has promised to build a wall along the length of the southern U.S. border and insisted that Mexico will pay for it. Trump didn’t sign any executive orders Sunday. But his chief of staff, Reince Priebus, said on “Fox News Sunday” that the president would spend his first full week in office undoing some of his predecessor’s agenda and that he planned to sign executive orders on immigration and trade. Trump has pledged to scuttle trade deals such as a pending Asia-Pacific agreement and overturn Obama’s executive order deferring deportations for 700,000 people who were

Cabinet picks Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says he believes the Senate will confirm all of President Trump’s Cabinet nominees. Only two Cabinet members, Defense Secretary James Mattis and Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly, have been confirmed so far. During an appearance on “Fox News Sunday,” McConnell urged Democrats to give expedient hearings for both Cabinet picks and Trump’s choice to fill the vacancy on the Supreme Court. He also said that Republicans were working with the White House on a replacement for the Affordable Care Act but declined to provide details. (AP)

brought into the country illegally as minors. Trump plans to meet Monday with a bipartisan group of congressional leaders to discuss his agenda. Later in the week, he’ll address congressional Republicans at their retreat in Philadelphia and meet with British Prime Minister Theresa May. Trump, whose 12th wedding anniversary was Sunday, also attended a reception for law enforcement officers and first responders who helped with his inauguration. He singled out the work of FBI Director James Comey, whom he offered a handshake and hug. JONATHAN LEMIRE (AP)

POLITICS President Trump’s executive order instructing federal agencies to grant relief to constituencies affected by the Affordable Care Act has begun to reverberate throughout the nation’s healthcare system, injecting further uncertainty into the industry. The political signal of the order, which Trump signed just hours after being sworn into office, was clear: Even before Congress acts to repeal the 2010 law, the new administration will move to unwind as many elements as it can on its own. But the practical implications of Trump’s action are harder to decipher. It instructs federal agencies to “waive, defer, grant exemptions from or delay” any part of the law that imposes a financial or regulatory burden on those affected by it. That covers consumers, doctors, hospitals, insurers and drug companies. Pulling back or eliminating administrative rules — like the individual mandate and health plans’ “essential benefits” — could affect how many people sign up on the marketplaces for 2017 coverage, and how many companies decide to participate. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., above, said on “Fox News Sunday” that the Senate GOP is working with the administration on a replacement plan. Democrats are casting the order as evidence Republicans are in a state of disarray on health care. JULIET EILPERIN AND SEAN SULLIVAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Falcons party like 1999 Atlanta earns its second Super Bowl appearance behind superb offense

FALCONS 44, PACKERS 21 Atlanta’s offense is good. Really good. Everyone knows that, of course. The Falcons led the NFL in scoring offense during the regular season. Their quarterback, Matt Ryan, is a league MVP favorite. Their offensive coordinator, Kyle Shanahan, is on his way to becoming the head coach of the 49ers. But everyone might have sold these Falcons short. This offense just might be Kurt Warner and the St. Louis Rams, “Greatest Show on Turf”-level good.

It might be Peyton Manning and the Colts-level good. It even might be approaching Tom Brady and the 16-0 Patriots-level good. It’s joined the conversation about the memorably great NFL offenses of the past 20 years. And now, it’s a Super Bowl offense. Ryan, Shanahan and the Falcons punched their ticket to Houston by overwhelming the Packers 44-21 in the NFC title game Sunday in Atlanta. Feb. 5 will be Atlanta’s first Super Bowl appearance since 18 years ago, when Dan Reeves was their coach, Chris Chandler was their quarterback and running back Jamal Anderson danced the “Dirty Bird.” Those Falcons lost the Super Bowl to the Mike Shanahan-coached Broncos in

the final game of quarterback John Elway’s playing career. Now it will be a Super Bowl for the next generation of the Shanahans. The offense devised by Kyle makes the Falcons a serious threat to anyone. Ryan makes it all work, and it certainly doesn’t hurt to have Julio Jones on the receiving end of those passes. But it’s not unusual to have multiple Falcons receivers running free and open on the same play.

Ryan threw for 271 yards and two touchdowns in the first half against the Packers. It was 24-0 at halftime and the Falcons made it 31-0 just over a minute into the third quarter. Game over. Ryan went 27-of-38 for 392 yards and four touchdowns. He ran for another and connected with Jones nine times for 180 yards and two scores. It figured that Green Bay’s defense would be overmatched. The surprise was that Aaron Rodgers and the Packers’ offense were no-shows until the outcome no longer was in doubt. The 49ers will have to wait to officially hire their coach. Shanahan has one more Falcons’ offensive game plan to put together.

The Redskins will promote outside linebackers coach Greg Manusky to defensive coordinator, several people with knowledge of the situation said Sunday. Manusky, who will replace Joe Barry, joined the team last year after serving as defensive coordinator for the 49ers (2007 to 2010), Chargers (2011) and Colts (2012 to 2015). He overlapped with Washington general manager Scot McCloughan in San Francisco, where in 2009 Manusky led a unit ranked 15th in total defense but fourth in points allowed. Manusky’s defenses struggled in four seasons with the Colts, who fired him after the 2015 season, when they ranked 26th in total defense and 25th in points allowed. (TWP)

Two players die in Dominican MLB Royals pitcher Yordano Ventura, whose electric arm and confident demeanor helped lead Kansas City to a World Series title in 2015, died in a car crash in his native Dominican Republic early Sunday. He was 25. Authorities said Ventura died on a highway about 40 miles northwest of Santo Domingo. It was unclear whether he was driving. Also Sunday, former MLB infielder Andy Marte, who last played in the majors with Arizona in 2014, died in a separate

car accident in the Dominican Republic. Authorities said Marte, 33, died when the Mercedes-Benz he was driving hit a house about 95 miles north of the capital. With the fitting nickname of “Ace,” Ventura burst onto the baseball scene with a 100 mph fastball. He went 11-12 with a 4.45 ERA last season.

Ventura is the second young pitcher to die in the past four months. Miami’s Jose Fernandez, 24, was among three men killed in a boating accident in September. Two other Dominican players died on the country’s highways in recent years. Outfielder Oscar Taveras died in 2014 at age 22. Shortstop Andujar Cedeno died at 31 in a 2000 crash. In a 2015 study, the World Health Organization said the Dominican Republic’s traffic accident death rate (29.3 per 100,000 inhabitants) was the highest in the Americas. (AP)

Coordinator to be fired after arrest in first week

Fleetwood shoots 67 to outlast loaded field

Oregon released a statement Sunday that said co-offensive coordinator David Reaves will be fired after an early morning arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence. Reaves has been put on administrative leave, and the process to terminate his employment has started. Oregon announced his hiring Tuesday. The termination marks the school’s latest problem since hiring football coach Willie Taggart. Last week, a strength coach was suspended for a month without pay following intense workouts that sent three players to the hospital. (AP)

Tommy Fleetwood shot 31 on the back nine Sunday to finish at 5-under 67 and win the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in the United Arab Emirates with a oneshot lead over the strongest field on the European Tour. Recent major winners Dustin Johnson (68), Henrik Stenson (69) and Martin Kaymer (69) couldn’t keep up with the 26-year-old from England, who ended his 3½-year wait for a second European Tour title. Fleetwood’s previous win came at Gleneagles in Scotland in 2013. Sunday’s win will lift him from a ranking of No. 102 to near the top 50. (AP)

MUST-SEE THIS WEEK

1 ‘The Path’ Wednesday on Hulu

The second season of the drama series about a man who joins a cult-like spiritual movement called Meyerism returns to Hulu this week. Michelle Monaghan and “Breaking Bad’s” Aaron Paul star.

HBO

Slender Man is a mythical urban figure who is tall, thin and faceless.

Beware of boogeyman ‘Slenderman’ is more a horror film than a documentary on a troubling internet myth TV REVIEW It was June 2009 when the Slender Man craze swept the younger digerati. But the general public only heard of Slender Man in May 2014, when news erupted that two 12-year-old Wisconsin girls had lured a friend into the woods and stabbed her 19 times. Three years after the attack, the girls are set to be tried as adults for attempted murder. They apparently did it to appease Slender Man. Slender Man, as it turns out, is a spidery figure in a black suit with a featureless white face who was photoshopped into photos. He flourished as a boogeyman and, at the same time, an abiding savior who found global expression in fan fiction, artwork and videos. HBO’s documentary “Beware

the Slenderman,” airing tonight at 10 p.m., promises to examine “how an urban myth could take root in impressionable young minds, leading to an unspeakable act.” But this documentary fails at rounding out that exploration. The film tries, but doesn’t succeed, to put the crime in a cultural context. Experts weigh in on the larger implications of the Slender Man mania. But the film prefers to savor more than probe. Instead of providing an instructive sample of online Slender Man imagery, it begins to bask in its own Slender Man visuals and creepy musical score. The documentary seems out to be its own horror flick. It also boasts of its access to the attackers, their families and

So who’s Slender Man? Slender Man was “born” in 2009 in an online post, as a mysterious specter photoshopped into images of children. Slender Man (also known as Slenderman or just Slender) soon exploded as a canon of belief and fantasy. His devotees came to regard him as both a sinister force and an avenging angel. F.M.

abundant home video, as well as courtroom testimony and interrogation footage. Viewers learn that one of them, Anissa Weier, has a delusional disorder. The other, Morgan Geyser, has earlychildhood schizophrenia. But the film scarcely acknowledges the victim, Payton Leutner, Morgan’s

friend since kindergarten, who seems extraneous to the film’s intended narrative. Only late in the film are viewers tipped to Payton’s present-day condition: She did recover — physically, at least. But we learn nothing more. As for the current status of Slender Man among global youth (has the craze grown or leveled off?) the viewer is told nothing. Morgan’s mother, like the girls’ other parents, seeks refuge in her happy recollections. Struggling to see her daughter in the best light possible, she recalls that Morgan “has always marched to the beat of her own drum.” But is it really hers? Or was it Slender Man’s? Don’t expect the documentary to answer that. FRAZIER MOORE (AP)

2 ‘Riverdale’ 9 p.m. Thursday on The CW

In a dark twist on the Archie Comics (with K.J. Apa as a brooding Archie), “Riverdale” has the usual components of a teen drama combined with a small-town murder mystery. Think “Pretty Little Liars” meets “Twin Peaks.”

3 ‘Z: The Beginning of Everything’ Friday on Amazon Prime

Amazon’s latest original period drama stars Christina Ricci as Zelda Fitzgerald, the iconic Jazz Age socialite, in the days after she meets her soon-to-be husband, F. Scott Fitzgerald. (EXPRESS)

FILM

Well, he said he’d be back, right?

Writer-director James Cameron is looking to oversee a new and final installment of the “Terminator” franchise with the help of “Deadpool” director Tim Miller, Deadline reported. Cameron, who directed the first two of the five “Terminator” films, reportedly gains back the rights to the brand in 2019. He sold the rights around the time the first movie came out, and since then, the rights have bounced around to various producers. Giovanni Ribisi plays Marius, who is also Pete, but not the real Pete. You follow?

MARC SILVER | BROADCAST MUSE

Amazon’s sly secret: ‘Pete’ worms its way into your heart grandma and grandpa, who run a bail bond business. Marius gets out of jail before Pete. Since he owes $100K to a nasty guy named Vince (icily played by series co-creator Bryan Cranston), Marius figures it’d be smart to assume Pete’s identity and go live with the grandparents. Bland-faced actor Giovanni Ribisi, who plays Marius, looks a bit like Ethan Embry, who plays the real Pete Murphy, though they’re certainly not twins. The family members seem to think that Marius is the real Pete. Maybe they figure the old saying is true: Prison changes a man. Fake Pete joins in sneaky investigations to find people who skip bail. “Sneaky Pete” lives up to its name in so many ways. The pilot was commissioned in 2015 with a commitment from CBS. But CBS passed. Amazon snuck into negotiations. Then the showrunner left, so “Sneaky Pete” snuck into oblivion for creative retooling. Now, Amazon has snuck the show onto the January list of new series, with a sneaky plan to hook you: Episode 1 is free on Amazon and has also snuck onto YouTube. As for the titular “Sneaky Pete,” he’s con man Marius Josipovic. His prison roomie is a robber named Pete Murphy, who blabbers about his beloved

and gunplay. It’s a noirish exploration of the underbelly of American life with a dash of dark humor, revolving around our curious antihero. Marius, whose own parents were crummy, seems to find joy as a fake member of a family that has happy dinners with casseroles and gravy. Or is he faking it? Then there’s a threat from Vince: He’ll start chopping off Marius’ brother’s fingers if Marius doesn’t pay up. Meanwhile, Grandma, played by the formidable Margo Martindale, might be aware that “Pete” isn’t really Pete. Gathering eggs in the family henhouse with Marius by her side, she says a fox could take the eggs and notes: “That bastard coming into your house staking a claim to what isn’t his, we can’t have that, can we?” The suspense sure sneaks up on you. You’ll just have to keep watching to find out who’s outfoxing whom.

“Someone should teach these protesters The Art of the DEAL WITH IT!” @TOMILAHREN criticizes Saturday’s

Women’s March on Washington, which took place the day after President Donald Trump’s inauguration. Lahren’s tweet exemplifies the view of some conservative women who said that the march and its goals did not represent them. Although the march had a nonpartisan name, it embraced a progressive platform, including reproductive rights and immigration rights. “Marchers were not speaking for all women! I share their gender but not their views,” @Annimari03 tweeted.

“I have no doubt our first woman president was somewhere out there today, probably in a pink knit hat. #womensmarch.” @MSTOHL tweets from the Women’s March on Washington,

which organizers and D.C. officials estimated drew half a million people to the National Mall. Women across the world marched in solidarity at more than 670 events, and shared their experiences on social media. “The Women’s March wasn’t just a protest; but a movement across the entire world. We were here. We are still here. We can’t be silenced,” @esthetiqueamour tweeted. “I’m glad I went, and I’m glad the world is standing up for kindness,” @HollyConrad wrote.

“Richard Spencer did Nazi that punch coming.” @PARACOMEDIAN09 tweets about

white nationalist Richard Spencer getting punched in D.C. over the weekend. A video of the incident inspired memes from people who lauded the sucker punch — but it also sparked a debate on whether it’s ever OK to condone violence, even if it’s against a white nationalist. “Punching Nazis is the most ‘Murican thing one can do. Captain America does it!” @KaraCalavera weighed in. “It was wrong to punch Richard Spencer but it is right that Richard Spencer was punched,” @sarahclazarus tweeted.

“The groundhog is the most accurate predictor of weather in history. Period. #SpicerFacts.” @CHACO_CHICKEN makes fun of White House press secretary Sean Spicer, who said that the crowd at the inauguration was “the largest audience to ever witness an inauguration — period.” Twitter users riffed on his untruth with the hashtag #SpicerFacts. Here are some others: “Nickleback has sold more records than any other band in history. Period,” @bstephen tweeted. “Everyone knows Beyonce was the weak link in Destiny’s Child. Period,” wrote @JoshCrewsReally.

Kensington Palace said Friday that William, his wife Kate and their two children will spend more time in London and less time at their country home in Norfolk. William will stop his work with the East Anglia Air Ambulance service in the summer.
