16th Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive Feeds 1,000 Families

MECHANICVILLE November 18- 1000 different families, about 5,000 people will have turkey dinners thanks to the determination and commitment of Michael Raucci, General Manager of Toyota of Clifton Park. Dozens of volunteers worked together to make sure turkeys, stuffing, rolls, and desserts were assembled. This year the food was dispersed in the parking lot of The Elks Lodge. Food was unloaded and placed in trucks to be delivered to almost a dozen food pantries throughout the area. Megan Quillinan, and the rest of the staff of the Community Center helped to organize, load and unload meals.

Paul O’Keefe – a True Hometown Hero

aul O’Keefe smiles down on North Main Street from his Hometown Heroes banner, and Paul is for certain one of our hometown’s most giving heroes.

That photo on his banner was taken many years ago, back in the early 1950’s when Paul was a member of the US Army serving in Japan and Korea as the Korean conflict raged. He had graduated from Mechanicville High School in 1950, and just two short years later he was drafted. Along with his good friend Ray Waldron, he had tried to enlist in the US Marine Corps, but that wasn’t to be, so they went their separate ways. Soon, however, Paul became a soldier in the Army and was sent overseas into a war.

Paul smiles as he recalls the day that, while serving in Korea, he took cover from enemy fire by jumping into a fox hole. And who was already in that fox hole but Ray! He had gone into the Army, too!

After returning home from the war and being

discharged from the Army, Paul went to work for West Virginia Pulp and Paper Company, one of our small city’s biggest employers back then, and remained there for ten years. He could however, see the handwriting on the wall, and knowing that Westvaco couldn’t long endure the strikes that were plaguing it, he left and got a job with the Waterford General Electric plant, where he worked for the next thirty-five years, becoming a technician in the Silicone Products Division.

Paul married his high school sweetheart Marie Cavotta, and they became the parents of four children. Blessed with healthy and happy kids, Paul was quite taken with two young brothers he saw at a home on South Main Street, sitting on the porch or looking out the windows, almost daily on his way to work. He realized they were disabled. His friend, Dan “Snory” Vignone, a post office employee and a fellow volunteer fireman, knew the boys and knew of the difficult situation their family was in. Both were suffering from muscular dystrophy, he told Paul, and their family needed help with expenses as well as basic needs. The boys’ only connection with the outside world was by way of a tiny transistor radio. So Paul and Snory came up with a great idea.

“We would push a wheelbarrow from Mechanicville to City Hall in downtown Albany and ask passersby to throw in money to help this family out,” Paul said.▶

after the third such walk with Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller and Mayor Connors. But he would do further such treks over the years. Eventually, even his son helped him with a Wheelbarrow Walk-a-thon. For Paul, this was just a beginning . . . but it grew.

He was named president of the Capital District Muscular Dystrophy Association, a position he held for four years. He even met comedian Jerry Lewis, noted for his work with Muscular Dystrophy, on several occasions. He worked for the Cerebral Palsy Telethons. When a grandson was diagnosed with leukemia and his treatment and eventual remission involved not just St. Peter’s Hospital, but the renowned St. Jude’s Hospital, Paul dedicated himself to raising money for St. Jude’s as well. He also recalls holding week-end “Battles of the Bands” wherein local teenage musicians performed to raise money for various causes. And always, the businesses in this small community contributed in many ways.

on the debt we all owe to our veterans. In 1986, Paul was honored with the Phillippe Award by General Electric, which is given to a distinguished employee for outstanding personal service to the communities in which they live. It was in recognition of the Wheelbarrow Walk-a-thons he organized as well as his work with the Muscular Dystrophy Society and the Cerebral Palsy telethons.

scheduled for just a few days before Thanksgiving in 1965. Mayor Connors notified all the mayors of communities on the route that the walk was coming.

Sent on their way by the mayor and supportive hometown folks, Paul and Snory set off on foot, accompanied by an old ambulance with a public address system which was provided to them by the Democratic party of the city, Chief of Police Henry Arnold and LeRoy Beckwith in a Saratoga county sheriff’s department car.

They followed Routes 4 and 32 through Waterford, Cohoes, Maplewood, Watervliet, and Menands right to State Street in Albany, where they were met by Albany’s Mayor Erastus Corning. People tossed money into the wheelbarrow as they passed along the streets, and many even stopped their cars to hand it over through their windows.

What did they accomplish? A grand total of more than $16,000!

Paul says that when the national Muscular Dystrophy Association asked that all the money be given to their organization, he and Snory resisted.

“Charity begins at home,” Paul told them, “and we are taking care of our two boys!”

So some of the money raised was used to help the family in Mechanicville, with new beds and a color television for the boys and food for the holidays.

This would be just the first of three Wheelbarrow Walk-a-thons from Mechanicville to Albany that Paul participated in to help out local families. In his second year, he was accompanied by Raymond “Rails” Coreno and in his third year, Joe Pitcheralle, Sr. walked with him. In 1967, he had his photo taken

Perhaps the activity that best expresses Paul’s longtime love of children has been his many appearances over the years in the guise of Santa Claus, an amazing 62 years of making kids smile! He has suited up and donned the beard for the Elks Club, the fire departments and for sick children.

A lifelong volunteer fireman as well as a member of American Legion’s Lt. Fred H. Clark Post 91, Paul may be best known here in Mechanicville and Saratoga County for his continuing service to fellow veterans. He has served as chaplain of Post 91 for 33 years. He has served as New York State Chaplain for Korean War Veterans, and is also the chaplain of the Saratoga County Deceased Veterans Program. At the funerals of veterans in the Gerald B. H. Solomon Federal Cemetery in Schuylerville, he performs the final salute. He is present at many veterans’ ceremonies in this area, including Veterans’ Day rites where he offers prayers as well as commentary

Honoring Our Veterans is a Lifelong Commitment for Justine

Crowley-Duncan

by Christine Barton

For area resident, Justine Crowley-Duncan, honoring all veterans has become her way of life. Justine currently serves as a NYS Veterans Service Chairperson of the Mechanicville Stillwater Elks Lodge. She considers herself fortunate to be able to serve in this role. She is able to naturally work to coordinate the efforts of the many organizations she is connected with. Each one working hard to support area veterans.

In addition to her full-time job, her family life and her role at the Mechanicville Stillwater Elks Lodge, Justine is involved in many different area organizations in various different capacities. Each organization offering something a little bit different in the way of supporting and honoring veterans and their families. Justine hopes that her involvement will provide the fabric that will one day link all of these organizations together in one united mission of service to all veterans.

Justine was motivated to become involved in service to veterans back in the 1990’s when eight of her friends were deployed to Desert Storm. She stayed connected with each of them via pen pal letters, notes and gifts. She maintained thousands of photos,

saved memorabilia and built scrapbooks to journal their service. This experience for her sparked the beginning of her lifelong journey to support and honor those who served our country, as well as offer support to their families. Their service made me “want to do something bigger than myself,” she said.

Her journey of tribute is a powerful one with many layers. In her early work as a girl scout troop leader, her troop adopted units that were deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan. She later learned her cousin had just returned home from service. From this family reunion her troop adopted several other units of solders, growing their reach of support. She teamed up with Military Mom in Action (MMIA) from Melrose, volunteering to put together and send care packages to hundreds of veterans. In 2011, when the scout troop folded and later the founder of MMIA moved out of state, Justine joined the Mechanicville Stillwater Elks Lodge.

Justine also served as a volunteer at the Cpt. John McKenna Military Courtesy Room for about two years. Her work hours changed and she had to step down from her volunteer assignment but it was during that time that she learned of the Patriot Guard and became a member. In 2012 she served her first Patriot Guard mission. She has assisted with several missions since that time and remains actively involved in this organization. I have maintained special relationships with each of the veterans even after the flight, she says.

In 2019 she joined the Capital Region Veterans Memorial, “Legacy Project.” First serving as a volunteer and later becoming Board Secretary in 2020. In 2022 Justine teamed up with the Ladies of Ancient Hybernians/Patriot Hills Founder Jeannine Mannarino. Together they work to bring awareness to the hardships of veterans with events, symposiums

This is a photographic war memorial honoring the 310 soldiers killed in action in Iraq and Afghanistan since 9/11 who lived in New York State. Justine actually purchased ownership of the memorial on October 25, 2022. This is something that she is very proud of. She plans to rename it to the NYS Fallen Military Memorial. She is also the co-founder of the NYS Warrior Promise Wall/Memorial. These mobile memorials will travel across the state.

Justine currently holds the title of NYS Veterans Service Chairperson at the Mechanicville Stillwater Elks which is a role which has opened up many connections. Her relationship with the elks began when they requested her daughter to play the bagpipes for one of their memorial services. I just “fell in love with the people here she said.” From there, she became involved and has held various roles in the elks club. In her current capacity she has been able to organize, arrange and host workshops and introduce elk members to some very wonderful people and organizations that assist veterans in need.

There are many organizations that do so much for our veterans. Raising awareness of who they are and why what they do what they do is so important says Justine. In 2021 she was able to secure a grant for Ibi Semper Training. This workshop trains veterans and first responders and their service dogs in small guided groups at various locations acrorrs the Capital District. She has also connected other organizations with the elks which include but are not limited to Hickstrong, Capital Region Veterans Memorial and Help on the Homefront. She has also worked closely with the Blue and Gold Star Mothers. Each organization offering something unique in their

mission to serve and honor veterans.

Justine continues to forward her mission of service to veterans by expanding her reach and establishing a connection with each organization so they might all work together towards a common mission. Her family is by her side supporting her efforts along the way. Each initiative she becomes involved with ignites her passion to continue to support and serve those who served our country. It is not one thing or another, says Justine, I support all veterans. The Patriot Guard mission is to, “stand for those who stood for us.” This really does say it all, says Justine. This is the fifth of the 2022 series of articles that will run weekly through November to honor the service of local veterans.

EDITORIAL

Thanks to Michael Raucci, the staff of the Mechanicville Area Community Services Center, and the DeCrescente volunteer drivers. Their efforts ensured 1,000 families will have turkey dinners this Thanksgiving. Michael has been organizing the food drive for sixteen years. Everyone in the community owes Michael thanks for his efforts.

The Mechanicville offered a preliminary budget which included a $96,000 tax increase. The City has a budget surplus in excess of $3 million dollars which amounts to over half of one year’s budget. That is excessive and increasing taxes will only add to the over surplus. The City recommended taking $500,000 out of the surplus. We recommend adding $96,000 so that there is no tax this year. And we urge the city council to come up with a plan for doing something with the budget surplus.

Concern has been expressed at recent Stillwater Town meetings concerning approved new housing developments. Future growth in the Town is a subject of discussion which we encourage. Many of the

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

To the Editor:

Last fall I wrote a letter to the administration and school board members of Hoosic Valley Central School suggesting that we change our mascot name. I noted that I personally have mixed feelings about this since I’ve spent over half my life at Hoosic Valley – 13 years as a student and 35 as a teacher. I do not want to see Hoosic Valley dragged through the press like one area school. In Saturday’s Times Union it was revealed that the State Education Department is finally making it mandatory to change. So let’s go ahead and do it.

When I accepted a position to teach at Hoosic Valley, I figured I’d stay a few years and move to a larger school. But I soon discovered that Hoosic Valley was very progressive and open to suggestions for change - some of which I detailed in my letter to the administration. However, I never received any response from them or the board members to whom I provided copies. I even suggested that because of our progressive attitudes in the past, we are forerunners – vanguards. According to one dictionary definition, a vanguard is “the forefront of an action or movement.” What a great name for our school programs and athletic teams – Hoosic Valley Vanguards. I even suggested that there be a contest for a logo.

Veterans Day Breakfast at the Mechanicville Stillwater Elks Club

On Sunday, November 13, 2022 from 9am to Noon the Mechanicville Stillwater Elks hosted a Veterans Breakfast at the Elks lodge located at 300 Park Avenue in Mechanicville. This was a time to thank all veterans for their service to our country. The breakfast was very well attended and over 50 veterans were thanked for their service with a free breakfast.

Along with a free breakfast, veterans were also able to get their photo taken by veteran and local photographer, Stephen Willette. Steven is also the founder of the photo tribute to veterans, called, “Faces of Veterans.” These photos will become a part of Stephens growing photo collection.

The breakfast was a success because of the many volunteers who worked together to make this happen. Thank you to the volunteers for hosting this event and to all of our veterans for your service to our country.

Mechanicville Preliminary Budget

Finance Commissioner Keith Johnson presented the preliminary budget for 2023. The budget is $6.08 million an increase of $363,000 or 6.36% over last year.

$500,000 is to be withdrawn from the fund balance. The city proposes a tax increase of $96,800 or 3.54%.

The tax rate has fallen but the taxes will have a proposed increase due to reassessment. Last year the assessed valuation was $250 million. This year the value is $300 million, an increase of 20%. The rate last year was $10.914 per thousand or $2728 for a $250,000 home. This year thought the rate has fallen to $9.418 per thousand. Though the rate has fallen there is an increase in taxes paid. The homeowner would pay $2834, an increase of $96 for a $300,000 home, which was worth $250,000 last year, or .$.32 per thousand .

Major areas of increase are police personnel $43,000, garbage collection $40,000, hospital and medical insurance $27,000,highway equipment $25,000, HVAC for MACSC $20,000, fuel $15,000, highway repair and maintenance $24,000.

Modifications may occur between this meeting and the final budget hearing which will take place on December 15th.

Thanksgiving 2022

It’s once again Thanksgiving, And some things are still the same, From bounteous food and family time, To the annual football game.

Together we share laughter, Together we share tears, And as always we are thankful For the gifts of all these years.

New York State Education Department Orders Schools to Remove Native American Mascots or Risk Loss of Funding

Kearney’s SERVICE CENTER, INC

he New York State Education Department (NYSED) recently issued a memo addressed “to all school districts,” dated November 17, 2022. The memo, issued from James N. Baldwin, Senior Deputy Commissioner was regarding the “Use of Native American Mascots.” The memo begins by stating the following; “The State Education Department (SED) wishes to ensure school districts’ knowledge of a recent legal decision and their concomitant need to ensure that district mascots, team names and logos are non-discriminatory.” It further notes that, “SED has consistently opposed the use of Native American mascots.”

The recent memo references that in 2001, former Commissioner of Education, Richard P. Mills issued a memorandum “concluding that the use of Native American symbols or depictions as mascots can become a barrier to building a safe and nurturing school community and improving academic achievement for all students.” Commissioner Mills recognized that, while a role for local discretion existed, “there is a state interest in providing a safe and supportive learning environment for every child.” At that time, he asked boards of education in local districts, “to end the use of Native American mascots as soon as practical.” The memo also notes that many school districts have heeded commissioner Mills directive and retired their mascots while, “other schools have not complied”

The November 17, 2022 memo further states; “should a district fail to affirmatively commit to replacing its Native American team name, logo and/or imagery by the end of the 2022-23 school year, it may be in willful violation of the Dignity Act. The penalties for such a violation include the removal of school officer’s and the withholding of State Aid.“

The memo specifically references the “Cambridge Central School District.” In addition to Cambridge, several other Capital Region Schools may be impacted by this recent directive including: Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk Indians, Glens Falls Indians, Schoharie Indians, Fonda-Fultonville, Braves, Stillwater Warriors,

THoosic Valley Indians, Mohonasen Warriers, Averill Park Warriors and the Corinth Tomahawks. “School districts that continue to utilize Native American team names, logos, and/or imagery without current approval from a recognized tribe must immediately come into compliance,” directs Baldwin in the memo. It is estimated that about 60 schools across the state still have a Native American themed mascot.

In June 2021, the Board of Education at the Cambridge Central School District had voted to retire its “Indians” team name, logo and mascot. Overwhelmingly the community, students and district voters voiced their opposition to that decision and in July of 2021 the board appealed their former action, keeping the “Indians” as their mascot. The board’s decision was then appealed by the Commissioner. The Supreme Court of Albany County later ruled that the “commissioner had determined correctly.” Thus, the court’s decision establishes that public school districts are “prohibited from utilizing Native American mascots.” It furthers that “arguments that community members support of the use of such imagery or that it is “respectful” to Native Americans are no longer tenable.”

The Cambridge School District did file a lawsuit over the order, which a court has since dismissed. The school district has said it intends to appeal. In response to the recent SED memo the Board of Education at Cambridge Central School District provided the following statement on their website; “Yesterday, the New York State Education Department (NYSED) released a memo to all school districts in New York regarding the use of the Native American mascots. The memo specifically addressed the districts, the commissioner’s decision and the Supreme Court (Albany County’s) decision. At this time the board plans to proceed with its appeal of the commissioners and the trial court’s decision. The attorneys are continuing the work to perfect the appeal and complete the legal process. The board will continue to update the community as more information becomes available.

Immediately upon receipt of the November 17, 2022 NYSED memo the Hoosic Valley School District also issued communication with the school community. Hoosic Valley Superintendent of Schools, Jim Burmaster provided the following correspondence; “Last evening, we received a memo from the New York State Department of Education regarding the use of Native American mascots. There has been a long-standing directive from the State Education Department for schools to discontinue the use of Native American mascots, team names, logos, and imagery. This new directive references a recent court case and the possible loss of State Aid for not complying by the end of the 2022-23 school year. Our administrative team will analyze the directive and consult with other school districts so we can have an open and informed discussion with our Board of Education at our December 1st Board Meeting.”

Stillwater Town Meeting

New Public Safety Facility

Supervisor Kinowski announced that all the papers were signed for construction of the new Public Safety Facility. Police, court, and EMT’s will all be housed on this one floor facility. This is the first municipal building ever built for the Stillwater town government. It will be located at the intersection of Rts. 75 &76. He is hopeful to fhave a ground breaking the last week of November. There is room for a 2nd building if the Town offices could be moved there. The current building is a 1967 Butler building.

Glen Hollow Water

In August concerns were expressed at the town meeting concerning the water quality and billings from the residents of the Glen Hollow area regarding the water from the private company that provides it. A citizen returned to express the same concerns about water quality, billing, and lack of responsiveness from the company that provides water to that area. He inquired if another body could take over providing water to residents and put that request in a singed petition. Supervisor Kinowski’s water is provided by the same company. He said he would look into the issue and see what steps the Town could take. Kinowski said his bill was for 9,000 gallons contrasting with a previous bill of 57,000 gallons.

Developments in the Town

A resident asked that a public hearing be held about all currently approved building projects and proposed development plans. Kinowski said getting the information to every resident would be impossible. In addition some projects are still in the preliminary planning stage. Councilman D’Ambro pointed out when a building proposal comes to the Town Board for final approval after the Planning and Zoning Boards have already approved there is little the Town can do. Unless there is a an outrageous item in the plan the Town has to follow Planning and Zoning reccomendatons.

Resolutions Approved by the Town: Making a SEQRA determination regarding dedications of roads in Olympia Gardens.

Authorized the Supervisor to sign an Engagement agreement #21 with LaBella Engineering to produce a map, plan, and reports for Water district 6 Extension 4.

GlobalFoundries Building Plans

“On Track”

Plans for a second GlobalFoundries factory are moving forward despite the company’s announcement last week that it would be cutting jobs and implementing a hiring freeze, according to Malta Town Supervisor Mark Hammond.

“They said it would not affect — and they reiterated — it would not affect their plans to keep moving forward with [Fab] 8.2,” said Hammond, who indicated he talked to the company last week following its announcement. “So that is very good news for Malta and the surrounding area.”

While it had record third-quarter financials and a good outlook for the fourth quarter, given the economic climate the company wanted to take “a very disciplined, proactive approach to contain costs,” stated Michael Mullaney, a spokesperson from the company.

News of plans continuing on the second factory also comes after the county approved a resolution related to the project. During the Saratoga County Board of Supervisors meeting Tuesday the board approved a resolution that allows GlobalFoundries to maintain the roads in Luther Forest Technology Park, where its current headquarters are located and the proposed site of Fab 8.2, said Christine Rush, the director of public relations for the county.

She also confirmed that county leadership’s understanding was that plans for the second factory, estimated to cost several billion dollars to build, were still on track.

GlobalFoundries is purchasing 800 acres of land in Luther Forest Technology Park for the expansion, according to an Albany Business Review article in July.

In July the town of Malta approved the 633,000-square-foot expansion just days after the town Stillwater approved a smaller portion of the project that lies in its town. JE Dunn, a Kansas City, Missouri, general contracting company that has a local base in Malta and has worked with GlobalFoundries in the past, was hired to work on the project, according to the article.

The original chip factory, called Fab 8.0, employs roughly 3,000 people and is currently undergoing a $1 billion-plus expansion of its production capacity.

The new factory would employ around 1,000 people, according to the

Albany Business Review.

Hammond said that during his conversation with company officials he also discussed whether there would be any local jobs cut. Hammond said he was not able to find out how many jobs in Malta may be lost but given the tone of the conversation with company officials believes it may be minimal.

“I was informed they didn’t have those numbers yet,” he said. “They’re going to try and keep it obviously as minimal as possible. I got a sense it wasn’t going to affect Malta as greatly as it may in other areas such as Dresden [Germany] and where their other plants are. Maybe I just read that wrong, but I think that it may be that we’re going to be fairly safe in terms of numbers.”

Proposed Building Project in Village

The Village of Stillwater Board met at 6:30 pm at the Stillwater Town Hall. Mayor Judy Wood-Shaw opened the meeting and relayed a message of thanks from the Stillwater Freshman Class to the Village for providing a dump truck that assisted with their clean up at Union Cemetery. Mayor Wood-Shaw shared a correspondence advising that the MechanicvilleStillwater Elk’s will be holding their memorial service on December 4, 2022.

A presentation was given by Tyler Fronte, a developer from Troyal Property LLC, on a proposed building project at 726 Hudson Avenue. The renovation/ preservation proposal includes commercial and residential spaces. Plans show ten apartments ranging from studio size to two bedrooms, including a ground floor unit that is ADA compliant. Mr. Fronte indicated the current commercial occupant, Stillwater Wood, has been advised they could remain, but it is unknown at this time if they will be relocating. Trustee John Basile questioned and confirmed the replacement of the boarded up windows, the right of access to the power plant and inquired about the square footage of the apartments. Trustee/Deputy Mayor Judy Wood-Zeno asked about parking and was advised there would be sufficient off-street parking. Discussion about potential commercial tenants for the space included an emporium or brewery, but there is no confirmation at this time as prospective tenants are still being sought and explored. Trustee Patrick Nelson inquired what the rental rates would be and was advised they have not been determined, but would run along market value.

Mayor Wood-Shaw confirmed that the Major Dickinson playground has been closed due to vandalism and thanked Matt Rifenburgh for the assistance in taking everything down. She indicated the subject had been caught and that the matter ▶

This Week in Saratoga County History Werner Brewery of Halfmoon: Turning Adversity into Opportunity

Submitted by Dave Waite, November 16, 2022

Dave Waite is a resident of Blue Corners, Saratoga County and has written many articles on upstate New York history, including several in the recently published book, Saratoga County Stories. Dave can be reached at davewaitefinearts@ gmail.com

Today there are at least two breweries along the Route 9 corridor in Eastern Saratoga County, each offering their own brand of unique microbrews to their loyal customers. Looking back in county history, we find that the commercial production of ale can trace its roots to well before the Civil War, with one of the earliest being the Werner family brewery in the town of Halfmoon.

The patriarch of this brewing family was Reinhold A. Werner, born in Gulmuthansen, Bavaria in 1827. At the age of twenty, he emigrated to America with his parents, Melchoir and Rose Werner. After entering the country, Reinhold’s parents moved west, settling in Iowa, while Reinhold stayed in New York, seeking his own opportunities in his new country.

While it is not recorded if Reinhold and his wife Mary had married before leaving Germany, it was in 1850 in Albany, New York that their first child, Emily was born. Their second, a son named Henry A., followed three years later. Reinhold Werner was granted citizenship in May of 1852 and within three years he and his family had moved to Saratoga County where they purchased twenty

the town of Halfmoon. By 1860 Reinhold had established a brewery and farm on

property along the north side of what is now Werner Road. In 1865 the Werners increased their family again. with Mary giving birth to their third child, a son who they named Herold.

In 1880 Reinhold made his oldest son, 26-year-old Henry, a partner in the family brewery business. The business prospered over the next four years, enabling Reinhold to enlarge and upgrade the brewery and build a new house on his property in Halfmoon. In an attempt to destroy the family business an unidentified arsonist burned down the brewery building in September of 1884. The fire also destroyed a nearby wagon house and storage sheds. Through a determined effort by those who responded to the call for assistance the fire that had spread to the Werner home was extinguished before that building was also destroyed. The loss, estimated at fifteen thousand dollars, was covered by less than five thousand dollars of insurance. Reinhold and his family immediately set to work together rebuilding their brewery and home.

After the business was rebuilt, Reinhold and his son Henry together ran the operation in Halfmoon until Reinhold died in 1887. At that time Reinhold’s younger son, Herold took his father’s place in the family business, the boys changing the business name to R. Werner’s Sons in honor of their father. In 1890 the plant in Halfmoon was sold to a joint-stock company and was incorporated under the name of Werner Brewing Company. At this time management of the business was split between the two brothers, with Henry moving the Ale business to Mechanicville and Harold overseeing both the lager production and the recently created Malt Medicine Company at that original plant in Halfmoon.

The medicine company came to be known throughout the region for the manufacture of patent medicine products including Werner’s Malt Tonic, Werner’s Malt Sarsaparilla, Werner’s Malt Cough Syrup, Werner’s Malt and Beef, and Werner’s Great American Anodyne. The Werner medicine products

were marketed through salesmen who each covered specific territories solicited sales and delivered directly to local businesses. The Werner brand was also advertised in newspapers across the region, with one example from the Hammond Advertiser in St. Lawrence County. In these advertisements, the products were touted as offering cures for ailments as varied as indigestion and “obstinate malarial diseases” at the cost of only one dollar for 112 doses.

In the early hours of June 30, 1891, and only seven years after the first fire, flames again destroyed the Werner lager and medicine plant in Halfmoon. Starting in the boiler house, it quickly spread to the main brewery building, laboratory, then to their home, which was completely destroyed. In the laboratory at the time of the fire were 26,000 bottles of malt extract ready for shipment, none of which were able to be saved. The business was again drastically underinsured, with the loss of buildings and equipment estimated at upwards of twenty thousand dollars.

As part of rebuilding after the fire, the brewing of lager was transferred to the plant in Mechanicville and only the medicine company continued in Halfmoon. The Werner Brewing Company, situated on Viall Avenue in Mechanicville, was housed in a seventy-two by eighty-foot four-story building. In its heyday, the plant produced sixty thousand barrels per year that were distributed in both New England and the Northern counties of New York.

The combination of the financial loss from the fire and the death of Henry A. Werner at the age of thirty-nine two years later started a downhill slide for the Werner brewery in Mechanicville. In 1896 the Saratoga Brewing Company of Saratoga purchased the plant, taking over that part of the business.

Herold Werner continued to operate the medicine side of the business, and in 1909 incorporated under the name of Werner Extract Company to manufacture medicines and flavoring extracts. Over time mail order perfumes were added to Werner’s business, with newspaper advertisements as far west as Michigan for Werner’s American Rose fragrance, a product that offered “refined, fascinating odors, distinctly individual,” for one dollar an ounce.

While the original business model of Werner Extract Company was medicines and bottled extracts, within two years of their incorporation they had switched to the manufacture of fertilizer made by grinding and mixing potash-bearing rock, coal, and bone. One reason for this change could have been the recent enactment of the first Pure Food and Drug Act, which required the labeling of ingredients, including alcohol, on all patent medicines. Over the next 18 years, Werner continued to refine the process of making fertilizer as new and more efficient machinery became available.

After a large quarry of four percent potash-bearing shale had been discovered in Halfmoon, the Werner Extract Company took advantage of this business opportunity and in 1920 invested in additional machinery to convert the rock into fertilizer. Advertised as a top dressing for meadows and supplement for fruitbearing trees and shrubs, the Werner company sold Werner’s Natural Fertilizer for the next ten years both by the ton or in 100-pound sacks.

On October 24, 1930, Herold J. Werner was stricken with a fatal heart attack.

With his passing the last of the family businesses were closed, ending 70 years and two generations of Werner brewery and patent medicine production in the town of Halfmoon.

One-Day Home Projects to Complete Before the New Year

(StatePoint) As the new year approaches, many people will begin considering their resolutions. Some will choose to focus on setting health and fitness goals, while others may identify DIY projects to improve and organize their homes. But why make DIY projects part of your New Year’s resolution when you could easily complete them before the year’s end? Check out five home projects that can be completed in one day before the new year arrives.

Refresh the Wall Paint

If there’s one area in desperate need of a refresh, painting is a great place to start. With the right planning (and an early start), you can easily paint a room in a day. Purchase the materials you need, including primer, the paint color of your choice, brushes and rollers, and a high-quality painter’s tape like FrogTape MultiSurface painter’s tape. Made with PaintBlock Technology, FrogTape ensures crisp and professional paint lines, so there will be no time wasted on touch-ups. Once you have your supplies, tape the walls, apply primer and paint away. In just one day, a fresh coat of paint will have the room feeling brand new.

Enhance the Entryway

Your entryway should give your guests a warm welcome. A few simple solutions for sprucing up this area are organizing shoes, hanging up coats and adding a pop of color by laying a rug at the door. If you have the space, time and budget, you could consider larger improvements such as adding a bench, shoe storage or a coat rack. Complete the look by adding decorative pillows to the bench or adding frames to the wall.

Replace Bathroom Accessories

One way to make a space look more contemporary is to update the hardware and fixtures. This works particularly well in bathrooms where showerheads, faucets, towel bars and cabinet handles can be swapped out for matching, ontrend matte black or gold finishes. Other small, easily replaced items include shower curtains, towels, bathmats, soap dispensers and toothbrush holders. These swaps may seem minor to make, but they can make a big difference in the look and feel of the room.

Organize Cabinets, Drawers and Shelves

Once the hardware has been replaced on cabinets and drawers, open them up and get things in order. Start by going through what you have and deciding what can be eliminated. Clearing out clutter is particularly important for open shelves that are visible in the room. Once you’ve decided on what to keep, replace items in an organized manner so they’re easy to find going forward. Sorting out these small spaces can help keep things running smoothly into the new year.

Rearrange a Bedroom

Sometimes you just need to look at what you already have with a fresh perspective. Rearranging the furniture in a room can make it feel brand new. It can be as easy as switching which side of the bed the nightstand is on or moving the dresser to another spot on the wall. Best of all, this approach doesn’t require spending money on new items or supplies – all you need is your creativity and imagination!

Hemstreet Park c. 1920: Oil Tanks, A Store, and A Lack of Fire Protection

After a week off, I am back to relating the history of Hemstreet Park around 1920. The hamlet was growing fast from its inception in 1900.

In 1919, Standard Oil Company bought twelve house lots on the river front at Hemstreet Park and installed large oil tanks to be supplied from canal boats. The first tank for the station was drawn across the bridge by a team of horses in September. (Mechanicville Mercury February 26 and September 27, 1919) In February 1919 the Town Board gave Standard Oil a permit for a pipe line from the property of Mrs. Lockwood in Hemstreet Park to the Boston and Maine Railroad, implying that railroad transport of oil would happen too.

On November 29, the newspaper noted that some residents wanted to sell and move because of the installation of the huge tanks in their residential neighborhood.

“There should be some law to regulate ‘nuisances’ which injure the value of real estate.”

Shouldn’t theyand the town fathers- have been worried about the safety?? Apparently not, as the 1925 NY Census listed John D. Blake, 37, the manager of an oil company and wife Ella, 35, living in Hemstreet Park. Perhaps he was the manager of the installation, living right where he worked. An article in the “Saratogian” in 1940 stated that Standard Oil had moved to Green Island, perhaps partly because the bridge had such a limited weight capacity. (May 17) As I wrote earlier, there had been an ongoing problem with the bridge and the large oil trucks.

The hamlet had one small grocery store, as “William B. Sibley..purchased the grocery business of George Bryant in Hemstreet Park.” (Mercury September 11, 1909) This store changed hands several times over the next ten years. In 1911 J.E. Haney, retired police chief in Mechanicville, moved to Hem-

street Park to operate a grocery store. (Mercury July 22, 1911)In 1919, John E. Kipp advertised the store for rent or sale. “This is an exceptionally good stand for business, being the only store in this thriving hamlet.” (Dec 11, 1919 Hudson Valley Times.) In 1921 James McEvoy bought out the grocery store of James Dickson. (Hudson Valley Times January 14, 1921) Other than that, the residents went across the bridge to Mechanicville for everything, from church to shopping and in most cases, jobs.

From 1915 to 1920 there was great agitation in the Mechanicville “Mercury” for Hemstreet Park to become part of the city of Mechanicville, or at least for its incorporation as a village. We know that neither happened, though Hemstreet Park students go to school in Mechanicville. In 1916 a new mail route was established out of the Melrose Post Office to deliver to Hemstreet Park. The “Mercury” felt that it would be better to come out of Mechanicville.

Another issue for the new community was fire protection. As early as 1911, J.E. Haney, mentioned above, tried to organize a fire department “in that thriving young suburb known as the ‘Brooklyn of Mechanicville.’” (Mercury July 22, 1911) About 25 men were listed as interested, with Timothy J. Lyons elected President, and Samuel F. Campbell Captain. Lyons was a middle-aged watchman, Campbell an insurance man. I found no further mention of this organization. In 1914 the “Mercury” advocated us-

ing a stream that ran through the suburb to create a couple of reservoirs for use by fire engines. (December 26) I mentioned a fire in 1917 which burned the barns of William LaBar. A bucket brigade of residents fought the fire. In 1922 residents met at the school to discuss “purchase of efficient fire fighting apparatus.” (“Hudson Valley Times June 15, 1922) In 1923 a fire at the grocery store was put out by the Howland Chemical Company, a fire department from Mechanicville. (Troy Times October 9, 1923) Thomas Cassidy, a telegraph operator who lived in Hemstreet Park, appeared before the Common Council of Mechanicville in January 1925 to ask that a water main be extended to the Park for use in case of fire only, along with installation of two fire alarm boxes. He also asked that the Mechanicville Fire Department respond to Hemstreet Park calls. This request was tabled. (Troy Times January 13, 1925)

The Hemstreet Park Fire Department was finally established in 1930.

Ballston Spa Elks Provide Support for BackPack Program

The Ballston Spa Central School District’s partnership program has once again received generous funding from the Ballston Spa Elks Lodge #2619. Representatives from the organization presented their annual donation and received recognition from the district during a recent Board of Education meeting.

The Ballston Spa Elks Lodge continues to be a consistent supporter of the Scotties BackPack Program. For the 2022-23 school year they have increased their annual support to $6,500 to assist with supplying weekend meals to students who may otherwise go without.

In collaboration with the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York, the district launched the Scotties BackPack Program in 2017 and currently serves students in all four elementary schools. The program provides easyto-prepare food to selected students each week to consume throughout the weekend. Meeting their nutritional needs helps ensure students are ready to learn when they return to school.

Set up is Complete for the Radiant Peace Memorial Tree Lighting Ceremony

On Saturday November 19, 2022 volunteers gathered at the Schaghticoke Town Hall at 8am to prepare the scene for the upcoming Radiant Peace Memorial Tree Display that will light up Schaghticoke on November 26, 2022. This event is now embarking on its 10th year. Every year volunteers gather at the town hall to prepare the lawn and the trees for decoration in advance of the ceremony.

This event is sponsored and organized in partnership between the Hoosic Valley Community Partners and the Schaghticoke Entertainment Committee. The committee members are supported by a long list of dedicated volunteers who ensure that each and every detail is attended to before the day of the ceremony. On November 19th the volunteers got right to work. In just a few hours all of the individual memorial trees and the large community tree located in the gazebo were up and the grounds prepared for the event.

The 2022 Radiant Peace Memorial Tree Lighting Ceremony will be held this year on November 26, 2022 at 4:30 pm at the Schaghticoke Town Hall. This memorial display offers the community, a bright and powerful remembrance of “those who can’t be with us this holiday season.”

This year the event will have 125 individual memorial tress and the large community tree located in the gazebo. The community tree offers the chance to hang an ornament that reflects a personalized dedication to a lost loved one. The committee hopes to see the branches of this tree filled with special ornaments, memories and dedications. All of the dedications, including those from the branches of the community tree, are read aloud during the ceremony.

The behind the scenes work to ensure that this memorial tree display is ready for the day of the ceremony takes months of planning, preparation and coordination. Each year this event grows in size and popularity. As the event grows the waiting list for individual trees also grows. It has always been the wish of the committee members to eventually have enough individual trees for everyone who wants one to have one. This has been a goal they continue to work towards.

John Bartis, Schaghticoke Entertainment Committee member, takes the lead on many of the aspects of the coordination, setup and breakdown of the event. He along with Jacki Kinnicutt-Sawyer ensure all aspects of the process are orchestrated from start to finish. Schaghticoke Town Board members John Rustin and Bill Fogarty were both resent on the morning of the setup. Both spoke of their appreciation for Johns hard work and attention to all of the details of ordering and setting up the trees. He works very hard every year on this project. They both note how meaningful the Radiant Peace Memorial Tree display has become to the community. The committee members are also very appreciative of the great response to the request for volunteers to help set up.

The Radiant Peace Memorial Tree ceremony is a tradition that many families look forward to each year. It offers a time to spend with family decorating each special tree in a way that best honors their missed loved one during the holiday season.

Again, this year the display of individual memorial trees and the large community tree will be lit simultaneously upon the conclusion of the ceremony that starts at 4:30pm on Saturday, November 26. The display will remain lit into the start of the New Year. Throughout the season readers can look for features in the Express highlighting some of the individual stories and memories behind these Radiant Peace Memorial Trees.

The program originally provided weekend meals to 30 students and now serves more than 190 students in the district. The cost for one student for the school year has increased from $183 to $228 for the 2022-23 school year. This increase means an additional $9,000 will need to be raised to support the same number of students as last year. Revenue to support the program is raised by individual and corporate donations as well as through any available grant sources.

For additional information regarding the district’s BackPack program, please contact BSCSD Development Coordinator Kelly Delaney-Elliott at kelliott@ bscsd.org or call at (518) 884-7195 ext. 1369.

Ballston Spa Rotary Club Christmas Tree Sale

The Ballston Spa Rotary Club is pleased to announce that it will have 600 Christmas trees for sale this year in its tree lot at the Curtis Lumber on Route 67 in Ballston Spa, starting Friday, Nov. 25.

The number of trees available in the annual sale is a return to normal after a 2021 season in which the club had significantly fewer trees than usual, due to a national Christmas tree shortage.

The tree sale is the biggest fundraiser of the year for the Ballston Spa Rotary Club, with proceeds used to support local efforts to address hunger among Ballston Spa Central School District students, international assistance to refugees, and other local non-profit causes.

The trees for sale this year will be a breed called Fralsam, a hybrid between Fraser Fir and Balsam trees. Prices will vary with tree size, starting at $80. The tree lot will be open daily until Dec. 23 or until all the trees are sold. The lot opens at 11 a.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. on weekends.

Programs that benefit from the funds raised through tree sales include weekend food backpack programs for food-insecure elementary school students in Ballston Spa, basic school supplies for kindergarteners, local scholarships and awards, and a summer lunch program operated by the First Baptist Church in Ballston Spa.

"Finish the Job”

Campaign on Giving Tuesday

Saratoga County History Center Announces Special Thank You Gifts for Giving Tuesday’s Global Day of Giving

he Saratoga County History Center at Ballston Spa's Brookside Museum will be providing special thank-you gifts on Giving Tuesday, November 29, 2022, as part of its annual appeal, "Finish the Job." Giving Tuesday is a global generosity movement driven by individuals, organizations, communities, and charities in countries all around the world.

The “Finish the Job” annual appeal has the objective of complete stabilization of the historic building in the coming year. Its goal of the current phase, $45,000, will fund energy efficiency and long-postponed repair of space required for museum operations and care of its important collections. Two friends of the museum have pledged $15,000 to match an equal sum from the community.

"Finish the Job" will make the museum's most economical operation possible. Its storm windows are 70 years old and do little to keep out the weather. Replacement with modern, efficient storms is planned before midwinter. New interior and exterior lighting, for the comfort of museum visitors and to reduce energy consumption, will use LED technology. An area of the building damaged many years ago by a leaking roof was to be gutted and converted to badly needed storage. Finally, since most of the museum's galleries have been renovated, only two floors must be repaired and refurbished.

Sean Kelleher, Vice President of the Saratoga County History Center said, “Last year’s campaign had over 15% of the donors during “Giving Tuesday.” We have some nice historical thank you gifts including some memorabilia from the old Battlefield gift store that we know people will appreciate.”

The impact of Giving Tuesday goes well beyond charitable donations. It inspires giving in all its forms from encouraging kindness to raising money for local non-profits and celebrating generosity. The movement is an opportunity for global unity through the power of generosity.

In collaboration with Giving Tuesday, the “Finish the Job” annual appeal will provide special thank you gifts to contributions above $25. SCHC will be providing specifics and updates on all SCHC social media platforms.

County Honors Milton Veteran William Helman

William E. Helman, U.S. was honored as the Deceased Veteran of the Month by the Saratoga County Board of Supervisors. He served in the Army 1942 to 1945.

Mr. Helman was born on August 28, 1923 to Edward and Sarah. He attended Ballston Spa schools and enlisted in the U.S. Army on December 12, 1942, serving with Company B, 404th Combat Battalion, as combat engineer/ jackhammer operator.

Trained as a Combat Engineer, he was assigned to the First Battalion, 139th Engineer Combat Regiment. He fought in the Italy campaigns, serving two years, 10 months and 12 from 1943-1945. After arriving in late April 1943, William’s unit was tasked with engineering projects in the coastal area in Algeria for a few weeks. He and 139th Engineer Battalion would receive infantry training from Darby’s Rangers, which prepared them for a role they had not thought of. His confidence was bolstered when the Engineers returned the favor with training the Rangers on crossing and breaching various obstacles.

Following his military service he went on to work in the automotive industry, and was self-employed as a body and fender man, working out of several garages in the area. He married Rachel in 1946 and together they had three children. He passed away on February 28, 1978.

County Veterans Service Agency Director Frank McClement cited an article written about William’s unit: “Combat Engineers had performed beyond expectation. William’s unit would proceed across Sicily, building 97 bypasses and shoveling rubble in seven cities along the way.”

In Italy the engineers of the 139th were destined to continue their valiant effort, taking part in both the Salerno and Anzio landings, the capture of Rome and the victorious battles for the Po Valley. During the Italian campaign the 139th would fight its way through enemy territory – while building 77 bypasses, 123 culverts, 24 major roadblocks, 7 airstrips and a floating footbridge.

“And that is only a partial listing of the engineers’ accomplishments,” remarked Director McClement.

In a personal account of one of William’s experiences in the war, describing his character and dedication to others, his son Lloyd related the story that while in Italy a fellow soldier from Ballston Lake was severely wounded from German fire while attempting to build a bridge. He was placed in a triage tent meant for those who were expected to die from their wounds. William carried him back to his tent, where he cared for him, and he survived.

They would remain lifelong friends.

On August 13, 1945, William sailed to the USA, arriving nine days later. The 404th would be deactivated 13 October 1945. Ten days later William was discharged at Fort Dix and was on his way home. Director McClement concluded: “today, for his service we honor William E. Hellman as a hero and member of the Greatest Generation.”

Photo flag In honor of William Helman this flag will fly for 30 days at the County Building after having previously flown at the US Capital.

Community’s Beloved Covered Bridge

The Old Blenheim bridge was one of the longest single span wooden covered bridges in the world, stretching 210 feet across Schoharie Creek near the Village of North Blenheim. It was constructed in 1855 by Nicholas Montgomery Powers of Vermont, who received $6,000 for his work. Its main feature was its single center arch on which the bridge relied for strength, stretching in a three-rib segment across from the abutments, to the ridge pole in the center of the bridge, and back again. It had three Burr trusses, a large one enclosing the arch at the center, and two side trusses 27 feet apart, a lesser height. This divided the bridge into two lanes, generally not common in the hundreds of the bridges built in America.

The trusses were in a series devised and patented in 1830 by Col. Stephen Power, who used: 3,600 pounds of bolts and 1,500 pounds of washers to connect the braces. 94,000 board feet (27 tons) of lumber were used. Interestingly, the structure was not built over this dream as one might expected but rather was built piece by piece in the village and then brought to the site.

On August 28, 2011, record flooding associated with the remnants of hurricanes Irene and Lee hit the Schoharie River Valley, classed as a 500 year flood, The Valley sustained unprecedented devastation. One of the casualties was the old Blenheim bridge, which was swept away and destroyed on August 28. None of the bridge remained at its former site .Local people retrieved many sections and put them in storage for use -- as a memorial, and helped by State funding, and built by the Federal Emergecy Manage Management Agency (FEMA), and completed in July 2020.

It would no longer have its official National Historical Landmark status. – But the people of North Blenheim were not much troubled, after the deep community-wide feeling of loss of a part of their identity -- nay a part of them. But at least they had THEIR bridge back.

The new bridge, not in use, is a museum with several signs illustrating the history of its death and rebirth near the entrance.

Shown here are photos of the front and side of the original bridge in 1975, and its successor.

(An upcoming issue of The Express will relate with photos more of the history of covered bridges in New York, Vermont and New Hampshire, with helps for those who would like to see out these vestiges of another part of our history.)

We Have Much to Be Thankful For

I’ve always enjoyed Thanksgiving with my family but many times I become distracted from the intended purpose. Between football, conversations, and pumpkin pie, it’s easy to forget how much we have to be thankful for. Sadly, many have forgotten or maybe they have never known the history of human suffering that is associated with the Pilgrims. It’s been recorded that the new colony was focused on giving God thanks for His blessings and protection as William Bradford is quoted, “Being thus arrived in a good harbor, and brought safe to land, they fell upon their knees and blessed the God of Heaven who had brought them over the vast and furious ocean, and delivered them from all the perils and miseries thereof, to again set their feet on the firm and stable earth, their proper element. Thus, out of small beginnings, greater things have been produced by His hand that made all things of nothing, and gives being to all things that are; and, as one small candle may light a thousand, so the light here kindled hath shone unto many, yea in some sort to our whole nation; let the glorious name of God have all the praise.” Clearly, the pilgrims of the Plymouth colony praised God and appreciated Him for all they had. Today the meaning of Thanksgiving is often lost under an endless avalanche of media hype, sales advertisements, marketing gimmicks, and aggressive commercialism.

Like all Christians, we give thanks to the Lord for loving us and rescuing us from eternal darkness and death. We could never express to our Heavenly Father enough how grateful we are that He sent Jesus to redeem and forgive us with His blood. I realize there are hard times and many difficult situations, but we are fortunate to not only have His promises of hope and peace here on Earth, but He is also preparing a place for us in Heaven. I published a book a couple of years ago called, “A Lifestyle of Worship” and it’s about becoming determined to develop an awareness of God’s presence all the time instead of just when we are in church or need a favor. Brother Lawrence, whose seventeenth-century work, “The Practice of the Presence of God,” details his discipline to become so sensitive to everything going on around him that he might consider all situations as an opportunity to manifest the attributes of Christ. I realize that most people keep a busy schedule and do not always wake up in the mornings and thank God for all of their blessings. Why is this? Well, we have a tendency to take important things for granted like our good health or even the air we breathe. We become so occupied with trying to make decisions and leaning on our own understanding that we forget that God is helping us and always has our best interests in mind. It takes serious dedication to continually concentrate on how worthy He is of our gratitude and adoration. “O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt His name together” Psalm 34:3.

So, we see that Thanksgiving is about expressing our love to God, and those who desire to know Him personally will discover that our devotion is not based on what He can give us, but just on who He is. Above my fireplace, there’s a log engraved with Matthew 22:37-38 and I often ask God to reveal to me the depths of this spiritual truth. “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and greatest commandment.” Every word that has ever been spoken and every book that has been written can only scratch the surface in describing God’s endless generosity and glorious majesty.

This season let us consider our Thanksgiving holiday as more than a day off from work, a traditional celebration, or a Black Friday sale. May it be a state of mind where we can truly worship Him for our daily blessings and our eternal salvation. It’s wonderful to have a roof over our heads, good health, and a long list of His benefits, but we are especially grateful for His infinite grace. It’s my prayer today, that I will never become spoiled with His blessings, but every moment to be sincerely grateful for the privilege ▶

MAXIMUS - Mini Schnauzer, male, 8 years, 9 lbs.

Maximus is not housetrained and requires a secure physical fence.

Maximus is a nervous boy who doesn’t like to leave home very much and very much dislikes leashes. For this reason, he needs a secure physical fence so he can enjoy some outdoor time safely.

Maximus gets along with other pets, as long as they understand that he deserves to be the center of attention. He would prefer a quiet home that doesn’t

include large dogs or children. He would also appreciate it if his new family was home more often than not.

These KITTIES are approximately 15-16 weeks old, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, Fiv/Felv tested

and have received flea treatment and a deworming.

CRANBERRY is a little over a year old, spayed, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, FIV/FeLV negative, and has received a flea treatment and a deworming. If you are interested in adopting her, please contact us by calling 518-654-6220 for a pre-screening.

DOG HOUSE ADOPTIONS pawsomepupspersevere@yahoo.com

DAISY is 2 years old Great Dane who is spayed, up to date on vaccinations, crate trained, and housebroken. She would do best with older children since she’s so big and goofy. Daisy is in need of a home without other dogs and we have not seen her with cats, but we do know she is not interested in chickens. Daisy is so sweet, loves affection, and just wants to spend time with her people. She may initially be nervous of new people, but then leans right in for pets.

Daisy does well in the car and at the vet. She walks well on leash, but can also be very strong at times.

Daisy is located in Charlton, NY.

BEN is 7 years old, neutered, up to date on vaccinations, housebroken, and crate trained. Ben would do best with a single woman, no children, no small animals, a fenced in yard,

and has done great with any dog he has met. Ben is very sweet and playful with people he knows well. He is eager to work for food, knows basic obedience, and is easy to walk. He loves to be outdoors, but does not like strangers on his property. He rides great in the car and does well at the vet. If you are interested in adopting Ben, he will need multiple meet and greets and home visits to build a bond with his new person, and it is important to research the Great Pyrenees breed to ensure it is the right fit for your home. Ben is located in Charlton, NY. Please contact pawsomepupspersevere@yahoo.com if interested in adoption.

Salmon Solo

Last Wednesday, Scott and I had a really good day of fishing, landing 6 salmon and 4 lake trout. What made it so good was catching salmon – we hadn’t caught any in 2 years and I was wondering if I’d ever catch one again, and after that trip I really wanted to go fishing Sunday, the only problem being an “iffy” weather forecast.

The Weatherman was stuck somewhere between snow with 3 foot waves and “nice” – that difference can mean an absolutely terrifying and wet ride on an angry lake or a pleasure cruise, not much fun if you get it wrong.

I was leaning toward the side of safety, but as one would suspect, once again, my urge to fish overcame my sense of self-protection and I was on the way to Port Henry at 5:30AM.

The drive up was uneventful, the weather was surprisingly warm and no wind. When I got to Port Henry, the lake had a little chop, but overall much better than anticipated.

It’s so much easier launching with two people, so it was a few extra minutes until I had the Money Pit in order and on the way north to “Fishville”. I had “lines down” and was fishing by 8:30.

Over the next hour of trolling – “north and south, east and west” I managed to catch one 15” salmon, more by mistake than intent, so it was “Head North young man” with the rocks of Scotch Bonnett my next stop.

Scotch Bonnett was the scene of Scott and my success - we landed 6 salmon last Wednesday and hopes were high – but it turned out that my “hopes” were dashed on the rocks of Scotch Bonnett – I could see ‘em on the sonar but I couldn’t get them to bite. So much for ”Brain Storm” #2!

I’d already spent half the day washing my lures and now the rain had started, the wind stiffened and the radio was talking about snow showers – well, may as well start trolling south toward the launch just in case it gets nasty.

Crossing the lake to the New York side I started south in front of Camp Dudley and don’t you know, immediately caught a fat, 15” salmon and a small laker – Hmm, maybe I’ve stumbled onto something??!! Nope, not another fish for an hour.

Continuing south, I got back to where I started in “Fishville” at about noon, the weather was slowly deteriorating and I was just poking around hoping to stumble onto a fish before surrendering and heading home.

THEN it happened – I found a huge school of baitfish and with them, a pack of hungry predators, in a 45 minute period, I landed 6 more salmon, 2 lake trout (one 32”) and this beautiful 4# brown trout.

It was like the “good ole days”, setting one rod out while there was a fish on the other, I was tingly! And then it stopped as fast as it started, the wind came up and shifted, the temp started to drop and the rain started pelting down – with a few wet flakes mixed in – but I was one happy angler, more than happy to set my sights on home.

Can’t wait for my next trip.

Written by Coach Shawn McClements

It’s official and they made history... congratulations to Jacey Locci and Anthony Zazzaro for qualifying to run lastt weekend at the NYSPHSAA Cross County Championships. They joined the 11 others representing Section 2’s Class C best talent.

The way it all went down was unexpected. First, in the boys’ race, the early pace was too hot. All those nerves on the line...the whole field went out too quick. Anthony hit mile one at about 4:56 ... Tim around 5:00. Made for a hard mid-race packed with hills. Still, Anthony improved his time on the course to 16:47, placed third, and easily qualified for States. With hindsight more even paces might have worked out better but it’s all a learning process.

The girls race was an enigma. We had all the intel, we knew who we had to beat to qualify.

Then the gun went off and all that intel was useless. Some top contenders came up empty, some girls predicted farther back were in the running.

We had our boys camped in the woods to keep Jacey motivated and clear on where she stood. With 1000 meters left, Nevan and Anthony let her know she needed two more places and that her form was off.

As we get tired that’s what happens, even without realizing it. The arms drop and the stride shrinks.

Jacey gave chase to Mechanicville’s and TamaracHF top girls as they left the woods for the final stretch -- 500 meters of open fields.

Jacey was running out of time and real estate.

As she turned the corner for the finish line, with 100 meters to go, Jacey relied on years of form training. She got tall, fed her face and drived her hammers for one last push for home. Her stride both lengthened and quickened, enough to motor past her two rivals and claim a spot on the States Team.

Jacey no more than crossed the finish line and collapsed, near lifeless to the ground --- there wasn’t any doubt that she spent every dram of will and energy in her body to get it done.

Jacey is only the second girl in Stillwater history to go to XC States. The first was Victoria Hathaway back around 2011.

Anthony returned to States after going in his debut year. He joined Ethan Jaynes and Joe Yusaitis as 2-time XC State goers. Ant’s only a sophomore though so he has the chance to return in the future. This year was the first time we brought two Qualifiers.

Waterford Girls State Champions

Cortland November 13- On Sunday the WaterfordHalfmoon girls soccer team made history when they became the first Class C NY State Champions since the program began, when they beat Section III’s Sauquoit Valley with a final score of 6-3.

The Fordians started this final game off with grit and determination. Payton Galuski, a seventh grader, started things off as she scored the first of her three goals just over 4 minutes into the game. It was 9 minutes later when she scored goal number two. Sauquoit Valley soon answered with a goal of their own. The scoreboard now read 2-1 with Waterford-Halfmoon on top. Payton completed her hat trick with 17 minutes still remaining in the first half. One minute later, older sister, Addyson Galuski, would place the ball in the net from 20 yards out. The Fordians weren’t done scoring in the first half, with 3:59 remaining on the clock, Addyson scored once again. At halftime Waterford-Halfmoon was up, 5-1.

The game was 19 minutes into the new half when goal number 2 was scored by the Indians, which was followed up just four minutes later when they scored once again. With those two goals being made relatively quick, momentum seemed to be swinging in favor of Sauquoit Valley as the score was now 5-3 with 17 minutes remaining in this championship game. There was 3:11 remaining on the clock when Addyson was granted a penalty kick after being fouled in the box. She set up her shot with the calmness and determination of a seasoned professional. The ball made its way past the Sauquoit Valley goalie and into the net bringing the score to 6-3, where it would remain, giving the Fordians their first Class C Championship title.

P. Galuski 3-0 • A. Galuski 3-0 • M. Atwood 4 saves

The Waterford-Halfmoon regular season overall record was 22-1 with their only loss being to Cohoes in a non-league game. The Fordians outscored their opponents 161-16 by the close of the regular season and throughout the Section II playoffs that combined margin was 33-1.
