Think About It By: Lynne Stone, RN

O

ne day, in a local bank, I saw a tot walking with earphones, controlling a device with his tiny fingers. Later, I encountered several young children sitting in strollers holding cell and iPhones, seemingly oblivious to the sights and sounds around them. Although I was amazed by these technology - advanced tykes, I began to wonder how much their knowledge extended to the " outside world". I don't mean through reading, television, videos, hi- tech toys and the like. I'm referring to good old-fashioned " show-and-tell" as well as encouraging using the five senses whenever and wherever possible.

Smile, look and speak. Our babies grow up really fast. Remember, there are no second chances. Recently, on the door of an out-of-state pre-school, a letter was posted. It was entitled "Mom, Turn Off Your Cell Phone!" In summary, the writer, a teacher, pleaded with mothers (parents) to put away their cell phones when they come to pick up their children: Meet and greet your little ones. Ask how they are and what they did in school. Spend time as you walk or ride home or go shopping, talking to your children, not to someone else on the cell phone. Show you care.

When I was growing up, my mother worked long and hard hours. There was little time to be together. Looking back, now I realize what we did have was quality time. She emphasized knowing about flowers, , trees, animals, birds, vehicles, sirens, fruits, vegetables, stores, money, adding, subtracting, clothes, body parts, jobs, tools and so much more.

Many newspapers picked up this story. A video of the letter went viral. Hundreds of thousands saw it. Most people were in total agreement. But two indignant viewers wrote the following. The first said "It's nobody's business when or where I can use my cell phone!" The second woman said "Maybe I have an important business call to make or receive. How would you know?"

Yes, I understand for now and the future technology is terrific and vital. But remember, every day identification skills are just as important for intelligence, awareness, health and safety - not only for our children, but for all of us. Learning is exciting and can and should last a lifetime. It's so precious!

The whole idea of the posting was to implore parents to remember there is no one more important for this short period of time than their children. So, dear readers, do you put away your cell phone when you're supposed to meet and greet your children? Think about it.

Parents, please talk and read to your baby from birth on as much as possible. When you text or look at your cell phone, your baby does not see your mouth moving, which is so important during the early months of learning to form words. When your baby does not hear your voice, precious words are lost.

TIME by Channee Lefkowitz

I am something very precious Yet not rare to find around. Some notice how to take advantage While others slip the opportunity by. You cannot acquire me on your own, However passing it onto others is treasurable. I have a great value without any strings attached, I have no present, future or past. With me you have the power to conquer Without me my friend you are nothing at all. The time your given is only worth what you make it, So please everyone indulge and pass me on.

Plum Upside Down Cake Taken from http://www.simplyrecipes.com By: Elise Bauer

A great Friday night dessert served warm with ice cream or served cold as cake or sweet kugel.

INGREDIENTS

INSTRUCTIONS

1/2 cup plus 2 Tbsp Margarine softened

1) Preheat oven to 350°F. Spray the insides of the ramekins. Melt 6 Tbsp of the margarine in medium saucepan over medium heat. Add brown sugar and whisk until smooth. Pour into the bottoms of the ramekins, dividing the sugar margsauce evenly among them. Arrange a layer of plum slices at the bottom of each ramekin.

1/4 cup plus 2 Tbsp brown sugar, firmly packed 4 plums, pitted and sliced 4 Tbsp plus 2 tsp soy milk and 1 tsp lemon juice 3/4 cup cake flour 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/8 teaspoon baking soda 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon Pinch salt 1/2 cup granulated sugar Zest of 1/2 an orange 1 egg 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Four 10 or 8 ounce ramekins

2) Combine soymilk and lemon juice in a small bowl (the mixture will curdle), set aside. In a separate bowl, sift together the cake flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon and salt. 3) Use an electric mixer to beat together the remaining 1/4 cup or 4 Tbsp marg with the granulated sugar and orange zest. Add the eggs and vanilla, mix to combine. Alternately add

Page 20

the dry flour mixture and the soymilk mixture to the batter. 4) Divide the batter among the ramekins. Place the ramekins on a rimmed baking sheet and put in the oven on the middle rack. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, until cakes are firm to the touch, and a toothpick or skewer inserted in the center does not come out with raw batter on it. (Might be wet from plum juice.) Turn the baking sheet around half-way through the baking to ensure an even baking for all the cakes. 5) Remove from oven and let cool on a rack until no longer hot to the touch. Run a paring knife around the edges of the ramekins. Invert onto a plate and gently lift off of the plate. Serve alone or with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.

The Real Sinai Urgent Care Center By: R. Yitzchok Landa, Assistant Rabbi at New Springville Jewish Center

W

hile he was still a young man living in Yerushalayim, Rav Elazar Shach (future Rosh Yeshiva of Ponovezh Yeshiva in Bnei Brak) would often ask questions of the Brisker Rav, who was already head of Yeshivas Brisk on Rechov Press in Geula. It happened once that Rav Shach visited, with a difficulty on the Gemara he was studying, and presented it to the Brisker Rav. The two analyzed the issue together, but parted with no resolution reached and none in sight. That night, at 3 AM, the Brisker Rav rushed into the room of his sleeping son. “Quick,” he cried. “Get up and wash netilas yadayim!” “What is it, Abba? Is everything okay? What happened?” “There’s no time! Quickly, my son. You must move fast!” The Rav’s son jumped out of bed and hastened to wash his hands. He then approached his father, who was clearly agitated and excited. “What is happening, Abba?” “Did you say birchas hatorah?” “N-no, but...” “Well, what are you waiting for?!” The blessing recited, the teenager again turned to his father. “I’m ready.” “Here’s the story,” said the sage. “I just figured out an answer to Reb Lazer’s kushya from earlier this evening. I’m going to teach it to you, and you run quickly and report it to him.” “Abba, now? It’s 3 o’clock in the morning!” “Who cares what time it is! Reb Lazer deserves to hear the answer asap!” “Abba, he’s probably sleeping, like everyone else at this hour.” “What? Reb Lazer, sleeping? With a question like this on his mind? No way! He’s certainly awake and pacing the floor till the tiles wear thin! Quickly, go tell him an bring him some peace.” The Brisker Rav’s son was no slouch, either. “But Abba,” he protested, “who says he still has the question at all? Maybe he already figured out an answer and went to sleep?” “Impossible,” said the Rav, firmly. “Had Reb Lazer found an answer, he would have come to tell me. He knows I also can’t get to sleep tonight!” Do you find this story inspiring, or depressing? Stories like these pepper the yeshiva education. They are meant to inspire us with a snapshot of the tremendous urgency Torah greats felt about their studies. To many of us, I fear, it may be depressing. Stories such as this one, and endless tales of scholars studying Torah with every ounce of strength, and every moment of time, they possessed, serves for many young students merely to convince them that they are not cut out for learning.

Page 24

Parshas Yisro Successful scholars, they hear, seemed to be naturally drawn to the books, to hunger for the hard bench in the study hall, to enjoy straining their brains against an incomprehensible, unpunctuated text written in a lost language, coded in antediluvian expressions and pithy phrases. They get their kicks, it seems, from bending over tiny litters marching dizzyingly across the page. Thinks the young yeshiva student: I, on the other hand, enjoy a comfy bed, a bit of sports, and good food. Oh, and entertainment. So I’m apparently simply not wired to be a Torah scholar? But here’s the truth. Great scholars are wired just like us. They are perfectly human and subject to the same pleasure and pain as everyone else. There’s only one difference, and that is one they created on their own, not in their wiring. Urgency. Knowledge of G-d’s word and will to mankind, is urgent. Earth-shaking, all-encompassing, consiousness-fillingly, urgent. And this is what drives them to extreme conservation of time and energy to devote to study. We have all experienced urgency. Be it a deadline, an exam, or a looming public appearance. We can relate to the feeling of being driven and pressured; to exponential rev up our efforts because of the pounding, insistent, urgency of the matter at hand. Torah greats are driven by that same powerful feelingsimple urgency to know, to learn, to study, more and more. And as a result of that urgency, there is no greater pleasure for them than the satisfaction of studying, of knowing. This is an urgency they built themselves, through contemplation on the central vitality of G-d and his Torah. We can do that too. We can develop the drive to know Torah, to be at least as powerful as the many other pursuits we chase. The possuk reports Bnei Yisrael’s arrival at Sinai to receive the Torah. Subsequently, it comments: “They traveled from Refidim.” Inasmuch as we have already been told that they arrived at Sinai, this report of a departure from “Refidim” cannot be understood as geographic. Rather, explains the Ohr HaChaim, it is an emotional movement away from Refidim – Rafu Yidehem, a laxity, weakness of urgency to know the word of G-d. Departure from this laisse faire attitude was the necessary preamble to receiving Torah. Perhaps, then, this is the week for us to improve our feeling about knowing the purpose of all existence. Maybe now, we can impress upon ourselves that knowing G-d, his will, and his word is truly urgent.

What's the difference between a WORD? By: Rabbi Reuven Chaim Klein, A published author, studies in the world-famous Mir Yeshiva in Jerusalem and writes on many topics. He received rabbinic ordination from several authorities in Jerusalem and currently lives with his wife and children in Beitar Illit, Israel.

A Crown is a Crown

T

he Bible uses three different words to mean “crown”: keter, atarah, and nezer. Some explain that the word keter is a general term which refers to crowns, while the other two are specific types of crowns. However, most commentators assume that the three words represent three different types of crowns. Malbim defines these three words by explaining the differences in their physical properties. He explains that an atarah is the type of crown which completely surrounds the circumference of one’s head and rises above the head’s height, while the keter is a crown which circles around one’s head, but does not rise above the head’s height (i.e. a coronet). A nezer is a type of crown which only encircles half of the wearer’s head (i.e. a tiara). Others explain that an atarah refers specifically to the type of crown which is covered on top, while the others refer to crowns which are not necessarily so. The conceptualization of the physical aspects of keter and atarah—which surround the wearer’s head—are used metaphorically in the Bible to refer to any type of surrounding (similar to the English word circlet—a type of crown—which conjures the word circle). Similarly, the Aramaic word for “crown”, klil also refers to something which encompasses another. Rabbi Yaakov Tzvi Mecklenburg (1785–1865) reveals that kallah, the Hebrew word for bride, is derived from the Aramaic word for crown. He explains that just as a crown wholly surrounds the head of the one who wears it, a kallah is wholly surrounded with adornments and jewelry. In addition to the physical characteristics which set apart these types of crowns from one an-other, Malbim explains that they also differ on a more abstract, thematic level. He explains that a keter specifically denotes a royal crown, while an atarah may denote any type of crown. In fact, all three times that the word keter appears in the Bible (Esther 2:17, 6:8, 1:11), it appears in the construct phrase keter-malchut, royal crown (like

Page 30

the soft drink!). The word nezer is related to the word zer (diadem), which appears ten times in the book of Exodus, when describing the golden ornamental “crowns” which are to adorn some vessels in the Mishkan (Tabernacle). But, the word nezer connotes much more than that. For example, it serves as the root of the word nazir, Nazirite. The Torah explains that a Nazirite—one who has foresworn drinking wine, cutting his hair, and ritual impurity—is considered especially holy “because the nezer of G-d is upon his head” (Numbers 6:7). The physical manifestation of this “crown” is the Nazirite’s long hair, but the spiritual manifestation of the Nazirite’s uniqueness is the way that he separates himself from the common folk. The same expression is used when explaining the reason for the special laws concerning the Kohen Gadol (High Priest). About those laws, the Torah says, “Because the nezer—anointing oil—of his G-d is upon him…” (Leviticus 21:12). The Kohen Gadol is also separated from the rest of the nation in both physical (e.g., the priestly vestments) and spiritual ways. From this, we see that the word nezer connotes a crown specifically used as a means of demarcation or separation which shows one’s significance and sets him above the rest. In addition to the three Hebrew words and the one Aramaic word mentioned above, there is a fifth word for crown used in rabbinic idiom: tāg/tāga. This word is commonly used when refer-ring to the “crowns” drawn on top of certain letters in a Torah Scroll (known as tāgin). Linguists claim that tag is a Persian loanword that was later adopted by Aramaic. Interestingly, in light of our understanding of the role of a crown in marking its wearer as special, we can easily see how8 the Aramaic word tāg became the English word tag, which also serves as a marker of sorts.
