FARM TO FARM TABLE By Tiana Headley Twin Star Orchards, New Paltz

BARN DINNERS AT RAVENWOOD Ravenwood’s upstate barn dinners have had immense success, selling out weeks and even months in advance. The coveted on-farm dinners take place in the gorgeous, newly renovated 19th-century barn. The evenings open with a plein air cocktail, served while guests mingle on the lawn. Then, guests are then seated at a long farm table inside the barn and served wine, hors d’oeuvres, and dinner made with produce from on the farm. TWIN STAR ORCHARDS After you spend the day picking apples at this orchard, you can grab a bite to eat from the pond-front pavilion while you watch the locals play lawn games in the grass to the tune of a live band. The pavilion serves wood-fired pizza and burgers throughout the season, as well as cheese plates, pig roasts, and of course, cider. New Paltz

THE BEE’S KNEES CAFE AT HEATHER RIDGE FARM In the middle of Heather Ridge Farm a quaint cafe set in a 1820s farmhouse, the Bee’s Knees Cafe, is celebrating its tenth anniversary. The meat, poultry, and eggs are raised on the farm, the produce is foraged, and the local cheeses and dairy are award winning. The menu at Bee’s Knees is rotating and changes routinely to accommodate different seasonal offerings. The cafe is open for brunch and lunch on weekends all year long. Preston Hollow

CRAFT BEVERAGE

By Tiana Headley West Kill Brewing, West Kill

H

ere are some Hudson Valley breweries where you can enjoy the best beers and bites in the region while soaking in the natural spring and summertime splendor of the valley and the Catskills. Zeus Brewing Company is the latest and flashiest brewery in a growing craft beer scene in Poughkeepsie. This isn’t your common industrial brewpub. Zeus passes up the stainless-steel-and-raw-wood aesthetic for gold and black leather details. The rooftop bar and lounge is the perfect place to enjoy one of their seven originals on tap with a Mount Olympus-like view of the Queen City, the Hudson River, the bridge, and beyond. The crisp, straightforward Zeus Lager has been a surprisingly common order with the menu—small plates, salads, pasta dishes, and “craft pizzas.” West Kill Brewing successfully brings together the contemporary and the traditional—a big stone fireplace, a slate floor, a broad bar with a smooth concrete surface, picnic benches, eight taps topped with deerhorn handles, white walls and exposed dark beams. West Kill doesn’t have a restaurant license, but the venison sausage and cheese plate is more than generous. Treat your taste buds to an amber Vienna lager called Buck Fever or a dark mild Decoy and Fresh Coat as

the roaring falls flow nearby. Take a trip off the beaten path and visit the pastoral paradise of Arrowood Farm Brewery in Accord. Lined on one side by forest and on the other by a field of grain, Arrowood is an artfully farmed oasis of lush crops, free-range chickens, and bees busily making wildflower honey. Grab a beer crafted with ingredients from their backyard or a neighboring farm and enjoy it in the hopyard while looking out at spring in full bloom. Posted along the intersection of Anthony Street and White Hill Lane in Hillsdale’s historic hamlet, Roe Jan Brewing Company boasts a rotating lineup of traditional ales, lagers, IPAs, and sours that can be enjoyed on its rustic porch. These include the light, crisp Hillsner lager, the traditional English bitter Morris Ale, the hoppy and hazy 22.5 IPA, the fizzy farmhouse Roeliff Saison, the dark and smoky Mercantile porter, the Emma blackberry sour, and the Taconic Gold Cider from Hillsdale’s own Little Apple Cidery. Pair each sip with bites from its inventive and palatable pub menu that features wood-fired food made from scratch. Awarded “Best Brewery in the Northeast” by VinePair in 2018, Industrial Arts Brewing opened its Beacon location just in time for spring. Sit out on the Brew Deck with panoramic views of Mount Beacon and a signature can of the Tools of the Trade or Torque Wrench. Dolly’s restaurant in S P R I N G / S U M M E R 2 0 2 0 25

Garrison curates the food menu, so the brewers can focus on producing the best beer possible. Expect lots of music and film programming in the spring and summer months. Mountain views, endless draught taps, and delicious food at the west end of New Paltz—it’s what made the Gilded Otter, now the Clemson Bros. Brewery at the Gilded Otter, the perfect craft beer destination for the spring and summer. Bought by Clemson Bros. Brewery owners Kenan Porter and Paul Pacheco, the brewpub still serves up beloved favorites. Come for the Back Porch Summer Lager, Katzenjammer Kolsch, and the Wallkill River Wheat originals, and leave with a full belly of the Wisconsin cheese curds, lobster, and towering burgers. Situated on a 25-acre farm, Plan Bee Farm Brewery in Poughkeepsie offers a variety of complex and critically acclaimed sour farmhouse ales that are made exclusively with New York ingredients, from hops to malt to fruits and yeast cultivated at the farm itself. This fully integrated process distills a taste of place that is pure and a farm atmosphere for visitors that is literally buzzing with energy. Sit out on their outdoor picnic tables and watch the bees forage nectar from acres of crabapple trees, wildflowers, and goldenrod. Woodstock Brewing Company offers the best view of the Catskill Mountains on that side of Phoenicia. The brewery boasts 15 beers on tap, including the light kettle sour Raspberry Gose and the Baby Dragon pale ale, with notes of ripe grapefruit, candied orange peel, and Meyer lemon zest. Pair them with tamarind habanero pork tacos, the roasted cauliflower banh mi vegan burger, fresh salads, and a mix of other vegan and non-vegan items.

JACOB’S PILLOW Situated within a National Historic Landmark District in the Western Massachusetts farm town of Becket, Jacob’s Pillow is a dance center, school, and performance space built in 1931 by modern dance pioneers Ted Shawn and his wife, Ruth St. Denis. The Jacob’s Pillow’s annual dance festival (June 24-August 30), a premier international event that draws 80,000 visitors yearly, takes place on the site’s three stages, which include that of the 620-seat Ted Shawn Theater and the outdoor Inside/Out stage. With ticketed events and over 200 free events, the Jacob’s Pillow Summer Dance Festival includes performances, lectures, tours, films, exhibits, and talks with artists themselves. Jacobspillow.org

POWERHOUSE THEATER New York City-based actors, directors, writers, and designers flock to Poughkeepsie for the summer season of Powerhouse Theater. Nearly 250 professional actors and 50 apprentices come together for a five-week residency (June 19-July 27) on the Vassar campus to form a thriving artistic community. The program works to bring together experienced artists and students who are trying to break into the world of theater and film. The students are a part of Powerhouse’s training program, which has cultivated the talent of a number of successful actors, directors, and writers. Notable shows that were incubated at Powerhouse include Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “Hamilton.” Powerhouse.vassar.edu

PIANOSUMMER PianoSummer at SUNY New Paltz (July 6-24) is an international summer program dedicated solely to piano music. It features an integrated approach to learning and performance under the artistic direction of master pianist and teacher Vladimir Feltsman. Gifted students from around the world join devoted musicians and teachers to learn more about the art of the piano and, ultimately, more about themselves and their place in the world of music. MOUNT TREMPER ARTS Located in the idyllic Catskill Park, this white box performance space consists of barebones accommodations like chairs, stools, and floor cushions to assure that the audience members can immerse themselves in the performance. Artists are invited into MTA’s space to perform publicly in collaboration with a variety of New York City organizations that will later premiere the work. MTA encourages audiences to come with an open mind, as their performances are often experimental and venture away from the traditional theater experience. Mounttremperarts.org

BARD SUMMERSCAPE The crown jewel of all discipline-spanning Hudson Valley summer arts festivals is, arguably, Bard SummerScape (June 26-August 16). The seven-week series is held in tandem with the two-week classical music-oriented Bard Music Festival. SummerScape features performances and presentations in the genres of opera, theater, music, dance, film, and cabaret, as well as lectures and talks. Concerts, recitals, and screenings are mainly held in the college’s stunning, Frank Gehry-designed Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts, while cabaret and other intimate events occur in the whimsical Spiegeltent, which is erected on campus every year exclusively for the festival. SHADOWLAND STAGES Shadowland Stages has been an integral part of our area’s arts scene for over 35 years, and it recent association with National New Play Network ushers it into the future. There are only six theaters in the state that are members of NNPN. Shadowland Stages got its start in 1985 when a group of New York City theater artists moved to Ellenville. The 179-seat venue has been presenting live theater to Ulster County audiences for years, keeping tickets affordable and programming a mix of classic, contemporary, and new plays. Maverick Concerts, Woodstock

MAVERICK CONCERTS Tucked away in the forest outside the village of Woodstock, the Maverick presents concerts each summer by some of the world’s top classical and contemporary soloists and chamber ensembles; performances by jazz, folk, and ethnic music artists; and, for children, the popular Young Mavericks Festival. Hand built in 1915, the shed-like structure is perhaps most famously known as the venue where composer John Cage’s controversial 4’33” was premiered in 1952. Each summer, the Maverick presents concerts by some of the world’s top classical and contemporary soloists and chamber ensembles; performances by jazz, folk, and ethnic music artists; and, for children, the popular Young Mavericks Festival. PS21 Nestled on 80 acres of orchards and meadows in the foothills of the Berkshires, the intimate 99-seat theater at PS21 is a place where artists from a multitude of disciplines come to share their art with the public. In the summer, the east wall of the theater slides open and the black box transforms into the proscenium stage for the 300-seat open-air pavilion theater. Aiming to cultivate interest in the arts in the Hudson Valley, PS21 provides dance and theater workshops, movie screenings, and free workshops for kids. Ps21chatham.org

PATH THROUGH THE PAST

HISTORY

By Abby Foster

T

he Hudson Valley’s robust history is intricately intertwined with the significant and tumultuous periods of American history. From 16th-century French settlements in New Paltz to the home of a resilient suffragette in Marlborough, the remarkable stories of influential people who once lived in this region are preserved in museums and in their former homes. Here are some Hudson Valley historic sites and museums that are open to the public. Built as a summer home for the artist and inventor of Morse code, Samuel F. B. Morse, the Locust Grove estate in Poughkeepsie mimics the villas of the Italian countryside that Morse admired. Fifty years after Morse had the estate built on a bluff overlooking the Hudson River, Martha and William Young bought the property. Their daughter Annette Innis Young established the foundation that now preserves the estate. Visitors can tour the mansion to see the over 15,000 pieces of furniture, paintings, and decorative arts in the museum’s collection, as well as tour the garden and grounds. Historic Huguenot Street in New Paltz features seven stone-house museums, some that date back to the 16th century, a French church, the original burial ground for French settlers, and a replica of a wigwam that would have been used by the Esopus Munsee people. The museums on the historic street hold artifacts and manuscripts that not only illuminate the lives of early French settlers that came to the Hudson Valley, but also the stories of the area’s Native American population and enslaved African peoples. In the early 1700s, the Gomez family built the Gomez Mill House, a fieldstone blockhouse on 3,000 acres in Marlborough. The family operated some of the first commercial mills and lime kilns in the Hudson Valley for markets in New York City. During the Revolutionary War,

Martin Van Buren National Historic Site, Kinderhook

the property was owned by Wolvert Ecker, who used it for meetings with other revolutionaries. Other notable owners of the property include William Armstrong, a colonel in the British Army during the Revolutionary War; pioneer of locally printed paper Dard Hunter; and fierce suffragist Martha Gruening, who founded the Mill House school. Visitors can join guided tours of the house to learn more about the stories of the influential people who lived at the Gomez Mill House. The West Point Foundry Preserve is an outdoor museum in Cold Spring that hold ironworks that manufactured some of the first steam engines and locomotives of the Industrial Revolution, as well as canons that armed the Union Army during the Civil War. A few steps from the preserve is the Putnam History Museum, which features rotating exhibits that highlight the history of the region. Past exhibits have covered the 50th anniversary of the filming of Hello Dolly! in Philipstown, which included historical photographs, original costumes, set designs, and memorabilia; fashion in the Hudson Highlands from 1850 to 1950; and 1,000 postcards that featured printed images of the Hudson River from the early 20th Century. The eighth president of the United States, Martin Van Buren, ran two presidential campaigns from what is now the Martin Van Buren National Historic Site in Kinderhook. Van Buren was raised speaking Dutch, and was the only American president to speak English as his second language. He served in office during the Panic of 1837, when hundreds of banks and businesses failed, and during the tense period of American history that preceded the Civil War. Visitors can take guided tours of the house, as well as freely walk the sprawling grounds anytime between 7am and sunset. S P R I N G / S U M M E R 2 0 2 0 41

good way to infuse some adrenaline into a routine hike is to climb 90 feet into the air up a skeletal steel tower to get a panoramic view of the scenery. Luckily for thrill-seeking hikers, there are plenty of fire towers in the Hudson Valley that afford striking views of the Hudson River, Catskill Mountain range, and even New York City. For those who don’t have a fear of heights, here are a few fire towers in the region that are open to the public.

Visit Ferncliff Forest if you want a vertical workout. This 200-acre forest is home to an 80-foot-tall fire tower, from which adventurous thrill seekers can catch an unobstructed view of the Kingston-Rhinecliff bridge, sailboats cruising along the Hudson River, and the Catskill Mountains in the distance. Once used as a lookout to protect FDR in Hyde Park during WWII, this historic fire tower is a popular stop along the four miles of trails that loop throughout the forest. Hidden within the Hudson Highlands State Park sits the almost 90-year-old fire tower on top of Mount Beacon. Used by forest rangers for over 50 years, this outlook post was decommissioned in 1987. When the tower reopened in 2013, musician/activists Pete Seeger and David Amram were some of the first guests to climb the tower. If you yourself are daring enough to climb to the summit, you are rewarded with clear views of the skyscrapers of New York City in one direction and Albany in the other. Inside of the 22,000 acres of Sterling State Park, to get to this fire tower you have to hike past Sterling Lake, former mine ruins, and the foundation of a former church. Built in 1922, this tower allows for an unobstructed 360-degree view of Sterling Forest. From the top, hikers can see the Catskills, the Shawangunks, and the East Hudson Highlands. The fire tower on top of Hunter Mountain located in Spruceton, and has been around for just over 100 years. It stands on the highest elevation point of all the fire towers in New York, at 4,040 feet. The tower itself is 60 feet high, and affords views of the Blackhead Range to the northeast, and Indian Head and Sugarloaf Mountains to the southeast. Located on top of Stissing Mountain in Pine Plains, the 90-foot-tall Stissing Fire Tower has panoramic views of Stissing Lake and neighboring states Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, and New Jersey. The tower was constructed for fire spotting in 1934 and was decommissioned in 1973. Now in the hands of the Friends of Stissing Landmark, the tower is open to the public and free to access. Situated on top of Balsam Lake Mountain, the Balsam Lake Fire Tower is the first ever to be built in New York, in 1887. The steel tower is 47 feet tall and replaced the original in 1930. The tower is accessible from Memorial Day through Columbus Day. After reaching the top of the observation tower, visitors can enjoy clear panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.

Hudson River Cruises

Hudson River Cruises depart from Kingston’s East Strand aboard the Rip Van Winkle II for two-and-a-half-hour sightseeing adventures through the HV’s epicenter. Between the splendid mountain backdrops and the expert guide discussing lighthouses, mansions, and more, it’s an unparalleled experience. The 90-foot vessel is big enough to be comfy, with restrooms, full bar, snack bar, and climate-controlled lower deck. There are discount tickets for ages 4-11; kids under 4 sail for free. River Pool Beacon is a one-of-a-kind free-floating (and free) public swimming pool in the Pete & Toshi Seeger Riverfront Park. Enjoy spectacular scenery and a cool, refreshing dip in the river and dangle your tootsies from your floating seat while the kids splash in the 24-to-30-inch-deep water, safely buoyed by the high-strength net bottom. The park has a playground and beach volleyball court, along with barbecues for your picnicking pleasure.

NEWBURGH

N

By Melissa Dempsey

ewburgh is like a geode; it may seem a bit rough around the edges, but you should see the multifaceted beauty within. As with many Hudson Riverfront cities, Newburgh was once a key player in the Industrial Revolution. While its brick buildings with their unique architectural details carry that history, an array of forward-facing shops, galleries, and eateries have given them new life. Here are just a few of the must-visit spots in the historic City of Newburgh. Some folks can spend hours browsing a bookstore, but the Barking Goose encourages you to stay even longer, diving 52 E X P LO R E T H E H U D S O N VA L L E Y. C O M

right into your coveted new read with a book in one hand, and a beer or glass of wine in another. This indie bookshop features a bar and café that serves local beer, cider, wine, and light dishes like salads and sliders. Check out the local author selection to find tomes by regional writers both established and upand-coming. Newburgh’s arts scene is thriving; view stunning murals throughout the city, or browse a revolving selection of contemporary works at Ann Street Gallery. Holland Tunnel Gallery, located in a renovated 1860 warehouse on Chambers Street, was originally started in a Brooklyn garden shed by Dutch artist Paulien Lethen. In recent years, she’s opened additional locations in Newburgh and in Paros, Greece. You’ll find restaurants to please any palate throughout the City of Newburgh, but none so praised as fine dining establishment Liberty Street Bistro. With its Frenchinspired New American menu, you’re bound

to enjoy distinctive, artfully plated meals representative of seasonal bounty. Visit for lunch and dinner throughout the week or brunch on weekends. Enjoy an afternoon pint at Newburgh Brewing Co. while taking in views of the Hudson River through the industrial brewery’s massive windows, or visit on weekend nights to hear live music. Take home a taste of Newburgh with growlers to-go; of the many options on tap, you’ll usually find an IPA, DIPA, cream ale, and lager, among others. If unique architectural elements are your thing, and after viewing so many of Newburgh’s historic homes you’re feeling inspired to redo your own, don’t leave without stopping by Hudson Valley House Parts on Broadway. This store and workshop is filled with oldhome finds like Parisian doors, stained glass windows salvaged from a mansion, farmhouse tables, and all sorts of lighting to suit a spectrum of design preferences. For those who prefer new and handmade housewares, Field Trip offers high-quality, artisan goods from the Hudson Valley and surrounding region including books, décor, accessories, and their own line of plant-based skincare products. Oliver & Chatfield, just down the road, is another purveyor of stylish home goods and other unique finds—a selfproclaimed “General Store du Jour.” Find barware, candles, wall art, jewelry, artisanal foods, and more. For an easygoing meal, you can’t go wrong with the gourmet Mexican street food at Hudson Taco. Housed in a former train depot designed by the same architect who developed Grand Central Station, this recent addition to the Newburgh waterfront offers flavor-packed tacos, empanadas with locally raised beef, rice or quinoa bowls, and more. Indulge in a margarita for true vacay vibes.

Tickets for concerts at Levon Helm Studios tend to sell out rapidly because there’s a powerful magic to shows at the famous barn in Woodstock, where loved ones keep the powerful legacy of the man some have called rock’s greatest drummer vibrant and glowing. It’s an intimate space where you can bring in a cup of your favorite beverage and get free refills of water and bring a snack to add to the communal potluck. Daryl’s House is the brainchild of singer Daryl Hall, a lover of great food, music, and company who remodeled the interior of the former Towne Crier in Pawling into an 18th-century masterpiece and helped create a menu of comfort food and elegant entrees. Great prog-rock and nostalgic tributes, and no-cover brunch-time jazz and bluegrass sessions. Bethel Woods Center for the Arts hosts outdoor pavilion shows at the natural amphitheater where the 1969 Woodstock Festival took place and indoor shows in the gallery. Instead of breakfast in bed for 400,000, you can reserve a seat at a pre-show farm-to-table dinner. Grab a discount ticket to the immersive multimedia Woodstock Museum with your Pavilion Show ticket and contemplate the many and varied legacies of the 1960s. West Nyack Levity Live Comedy Theatre is the New York outpost of the Improvisation Comedy Clubs, the premiere national network that launched names like Richard Pryor, Billy Crystal, Lily Tomlin, Ellen DeGeneres, Dave Chapelle, Jeff Dunham, Dane Cook, and more. coming generation will have you rolling in the aisles, and this is where they live; come feast and drink and enjoy. Serious Comedy Theatre started with an open mic improv jam at Beacon Performing Arts Center and grew into a twice-monthly series of improvs and stand-up nights at the Story Screen Beacon Theatre and at its own Training Center on Kent Street. You can sign up to polish your own laugh lines in classes and workshops or come laugh at those who do. The Falcon is a music lover’s passion project, a repurposed 19th century factory set over a gorgeous waterfall in Marlboro presenting five-star jazz, blues, rock, world music, and contemporary chamber music in two acoustically exquisite rooms, the main club and the pub underneath it. There’s a gorgeous deck, gallery space, fine New York food and beverages, the Avalon Archives Museum of Roots, Rock & Roll, and no cover charge. Club Helsinki Hudson is a lovingly and mindfully repurposed 1800s industrial building complex that elegantly houses a nationally recognized and beloved performance space, an art gallery, and an award-winning full-service restaurant providing farm-to-table Low-Country American and Creole French fare until 10 pm. The renovation jumpstarted Hudson’s rebirth and stands as one of its crown jewels. Recent shows included performances by chanteuse Nellie McKay, neo-Vaudevillians Bindlestiff Family Cirkus, and singer-songwriter Chris Smither.
