GRANVILLE The 34th Annual Granville Christmas Candlelight Walking Tour
December 7, 2019 Join us on Saturday, December 7th from 1-9pm for our 34th Annual Christmas Candlelight Walking Tour. New features to our classic holiday event. A new ‘Christmas Market’ area will be situated in Opera House Park which will offer a variety of artisans and vendors with select holiday oriented crafts, gifts, and food items. Also new this year is the addition of a second parking shuttle that will operate continuously between the nearby Cherry Valley Hotel and downtown Granville. The recently renovated Hotel is going all out for the holidays! During the entire month of December their massive lobby is being transformed into a Winter Wonderland with activities and entertainment for the whole family. Be sure to check them out during the Christmas Candlelight Walking Tour - and then hop on a shuttle for a ride into the Village. Back by popular demand this year we are returning to the tradition of luminaries adorning our sidewalks. We also have a new commemorative Christmas ornament, and, of course, Santa and Mrs. Claus arriving by fire truck at 1pm! Printed event programs will be available at Village Hall the day of the event. Visitors will be unable to resist the holiday spirit as they stroll the quaint village of Granville, decorated with over 70 beautifully lit Christmas trees sponsored by local families, businesses, and civic organizations. The festive mood is further enhanced by the glow of twinkling lights, the sounds of carolers, musicians, and the happy laughter of children as they sit on Santa’s knee. Traditions continue as all of your familiar favorites will still be on hand: relax and enjoy a horse-drawn wagon ride down Broadway, purchase a freshly made apple fritter on the corner, and gaze at ice sculptures on the lawn at the Granville Inn, view the Gingerbread Houses on display in the Robbins Hunter Museum, and be mesmerized by the 11th Annual Train Show “Fairytale Crossing” - train exhibit at the library. Enjoy the hospitality of our churches, museums, banks, the post office, and local businesses as they open their doors. This year Licking Memorial Health Systems and the Cherry Valley Hotel have stepped up in a big way to be our Platinum Sponsors. Be sure to thank these Member businesses every chance you get!

“Christmas is the spirit of
giving without a thought of getting. It is happiness because we see joy in people. It is forgetting self and finding time for others. It is discarding the meaningless and stressing the true values.” ~Thomas S. Monson

DID YOU KNOW THORNPORT HAD A SCHOOL? The school was located in the south-east end of Thornport just off State Route 13. The land for this building was purchased by the Board of Education of Thorn Township from William Talbott for the sum of $25.00 on December 9, 1855, and recorded on March 28, 1857. This school went only through the eighth grade. A Boxwell Test had to be taken and passed before going on into high school. This test was given at New Lexington. We are listing some of the teachers in the past and have put the years they taught as best we know. David Mohler, 1878; Miss Ella Boganwright, 1890, and taught at least two years; Harry Bope taught quite a few years, it is believed his last year was 1908; Maurice Helser taught two or three years; James Wit-
mer; Guy Lawyer; Carl Courson, 1910-11-12; Guy Polson; Russell Morrison, 1915; Blanch Edmond 1916 Adrine Boyd; Carrie McCandlish; and Rachael Cooperrider, a substitute. The school closed about 1916. The school building is still standing and is owned by Ted Eppley. He has an auto repair garage next to his house. There wasn’t any water in the school, so they had to go across the road to get their water, which at that time was Jesse Neel’s house. The bucket, cups and school benches used at the school are still in existence today by a private collector. Jesse Neel’s house is generally referred to as the McCandlish house.

Your Wild Ohio - Hunter Field Notes: Landowner Permission
OHIO DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
DIVISION OF WILDLIFE w i l d o h i o. g ov
Every year, officers field several questions
about retrieving and tracking deer. While it is well-known that hunters need permission from the landowner before hunting on private property, it is often a misconception that hunters do not need permission to simply retrieve deer - but this would be considered trespassing. No matter where you are hunting, if you shoot a deer and it moves to someone’s private property, you must first obtain permission from the landowner before retrieving it. We know that laws can be complicated. If you are ever unsure of Ohio’s Hunting Regulations, feel free to contact 1-800-WILDLIFE (945-3543) or email email@example.com and ask us first.

Christmas is celebrated in many countries all over the world and in a wide variety of ways. Many of the customs and decorations we use to make the holiday special have developed in interesting ways and their origins may be hidden in history. The original Rudolph did not have a red nose. In that day and age, red noses were seen as an indicator of chronic alcoholism and Montgomery Ward didn’t want him to look like a drunkard. To complete the original picture, he was almost named Reginald or Rollo.
