Ryoko Suzuky

The "Bind" series of works is an expression of my human condition at the given time: a grown-up who has taken off, out of the world introduced by my parents and other adults, acquiring my own thinking and experience. "Bind" shows a woman who is dealing with her female origin. In this work series, I am binding myself with pigskin, which had been soaked in my blood, as a symbol of my womanhood. At the time, I was reflecting on my life, which was in the process of transformation. A child before, and living a life that adults provided me with, I started to explore my life as an independant being - by binding my eyes, nose, mouth, and ears with pigskin in order to ‘reset’ my senses – using an aggressive sensual reduction in order to get in touch with my core. In this way, the "Bind" series is an artistic documentary of my recondite development as a human being becoming a woman. My later works, then, investigate further outside, on female identity within society. In fact, many people seeing my work already understood the "Bind" series as expressing the situation of Japanese women, of whom many are, at this time, not free to decide their lives for themselves, in front of the background of traditional family structures. I believe that contemporary feminist art envisions the progress of sensitive qualities of being human in a social state of affairs. Ryoko Suzuky
