UNA PANAMÁ INÉDITA

POR/BY: ISSA PLANCARTE

DAVID R. FLORES CASTRO

“A homeland is so many beautiful things… it is what everyone carries in their soul when they are far away,” Rubén Blades sings about Panama, as a subtle invitation to discover a country that stands between a strikingly modern metropolis and some of Central America’s most spectacular landscapes.

The journey begins aboard a small plane, followed by a boat ride. The trip from Panama City takes approximately two hours, so keep this in mind when planning your itinerary.

NAYARA

Just two hours from Panama City lies a hidden gem that even locals consider the most beautiful place in the country. Reaching Nayara Bocas del Toro requires boarding a small plane and then traveling by boat through the crystal-clear water of this idyllic archipelago. Keep in mind that the local language here is Wari Wari, a form of English spoken with such a distinctive coastal accent that, at times, sounds almost Jamaican.

As is often the case at hotels of this caliber, someone will be waiting for you upon arrival with a pair of chilled towels, offering welcome relief before you check in.

También puedes reservar excursiones para buscar estrellas de mar y salir a avistar delfines que nadan en libertad./ You can request amenities for your aquatic adventures and board boat excursions directly from your room. You can also book outings to search for starfish or spot dolphins swimming freely in the surrounding waters.

The Nayara experience is as close as you can get to stepping into the world of Avatar. The surrounding waters even glow with bioluminescence at night, but try to visit during a new moon, since it will allow you to experience the phenomenon at its most spectacular.

Its villas, built over the sea, feature exclusive butler service, which can be requested from the iPad in your room or directly from your phone. There is also snorkeling gear available to guests eager to dive straight into the sea, as well as a glass floor that allows you to watch marine life without leaving your room, even after dark. Every villa includes a private pool and stairs providing direct access to the ocean, inviting you to take a swim the moment you arrive.

The island’s biodiversity is extraordinary. Simply dipping your head beneath the surface reveals an incredible variety of fish. A short swim from your villa may bring you face to face with a barracuda, a needlefish and a pair of stingrays. It is also worth asking about the sharks at Elephant House: after sunset, they often gather nearby in search of an easy meal. And if you decide to head out by kayak and fortune is on your side, you may find yourself surrounded by hundreds of tiny jellyfish drifting through the water. In moments like these, with the sea barely rippling and silence embracing the landscape, the hypnotic atmosphere is perfect for pressing play on Christian Löffler’s song, “Nil.”

This adults-only resort also features a bar and two restaurants offering enough variety to satisfy every meal during your stay. Coral Café is a reliable choice at any hour of the day, while Elephant House (where sharks make their nightly appearance) is the perfect setting for dinner, where the wine list and service stand out.

The best advice for making the most of this hotel is to fill your days with activities, or simply set aside time to indulge yourself at the spa, unwind in your villa’s private pool, or admire the deep blue of the Caribbean Sea from the serenity of your own terrace.

Agenda una visita a la isla Popa y convive con sus habitantes, quienes te enseñarán a preparar su pan tradicional y a elaborar artesanías de la región./ Schedule a visit to Popa Island, where you can spend time with locals who will teach you how to bake their traditional bread and create handcrafted pieces unique to the region.

Creating a World to Share

At Comarca Productiva Don Julio, located just one hour from Buenos Aires, visitors can spend a day in the countryside while discovering the products served at Pablo Rivero’s restaurants: the Don Julio steakhouse, El Preferido, and Social Corazón bakery.

27 Years ago, inspired by the concept of hospitality, Pablo Rivero founded Don Julio steakhouse.

“Years ago, a restaurant was something different, but today cooking is about affection: a place where people come to feel cared for,” says sommelier and founder of Argentina’s most celebrated steakhouse, Pablo Rivero, mate in hand and a scarf around his neck, inside the restaurant housed in this early-20th-century estate.

As the crackling fire announces that lunch is almost ready, Rivero offers a mate and explains that here, at Comarca Productiva Don Julio – his new rural tourism venture – is where the “heart of all his projects beats”.

Spread across 230 hectares, just an hour’s drive from Buenos Aires, this is a place where tranquility can be heard. Here, the ingredients used in the kitchens of Rivero’s businesses in the Palermo neighborhood are grown: the Don Julio steakhouse, El Preferido restaurant, and Social Corazón, a bakery where guests can enjoy breakfast or have an afternoon snack.

For those who enjoy ecotourism and want to experience a day in the countryside, Comarca Productiva Don Julio is open to the public. Guests can harvest produce from the vegetable and herb gardens, collect eggs, stroll through the fields, visit the cattle, and enjoy breakfast and afternoon snacks, with dinner service coming soon. Beginning in the Southern Hemisphere spring, visitors will also be able to reserve a table for dinner.

The estate is filled with impossibly green pastures. White hens cluck loudly, dart about restlessly, and pay little attention to visitors, while brown hens are friendlier and more discreet, laying eggs in shades that range from pearl to coral. Above, a bright blue sky is streaked with white clouds that resemble delicate creases. The property is also home to 474 Aberdeen Angus cattle – mostly black, some red – that rotate from pasture to pasture, their dark eyes calm and unhurried. Bees work tirelessly, producing 550 pounds of intensely aromatic honey between January and February. There is also an organic vegetable garden and two greenhouses where tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, squash, mizuna, sugar snap peas, beets, fava beans, Swiss chard, cabbages, and edible flowers are harvested.

“Anyone who spends an afternoon or a full day with us will understand why we see things the way we do,” says the chef,

The estate is home to friendly and lively hens, beehives, and an organic vegetable garden with two greenhouses.

who will soon open a restaurant in New York’s West Village. He pauses for a moment before adding: “What we really do is create a world to share. Diners and visitors alike are offered our love: we want to make people happy. We take responsibility for giving them a joyful moment. If I had to sum it all up in one word, it would be ‘hospitality’. Welcoming others into our world.”

Hospitality was the same guiding principle Rivero embraced 27 years ago when he imagined and founded Don Julio on the corner of Guatemala and Gurruchaga Streets in Palermo.

In a country like Argentina, where the asado is a cherished tradition, standing out among countless steakhouses is no easy task. Rivero achieved it not only nationally but internationally. In March, the World’s 101 Best Steak Restaurants 2026 ranking elevated Don Julio to the “Hall of Fire”, an honorary distinction reserved for restaurants that have topped the list for

three consecutive years.

But, what set apart and brought it to the very top? “I believe our achievement was bringing steakhouse cuisine into the 21st century,” he explains. “That means interpreting it according to the same quality standards as a three-Michelin-star restaurant or one of the world’s finest dining establishments. From the service, glassware, and tableware to the way we approach our ingredients and care for every detail; from the presentation to the hospitality,

the sense of theater needed to welcome guests and become a true destination.”

I then ask Pablo whether the days when food alone mattered are behind us, and if the performance is now just as important. He answers: “That’s where the beauty is, isn’t it? When you ask yourself if art can exist in an Argentine steakhouse, if we can explore aesthetics the way other culinary projects do. Of course we can. In fact, we must. If the steakhouse is our country’s most representative and beloved cuisine, then it should represent every part of who we are. Argentinians are sophisticated people: art, literature, and philosophy are part of us. I believe a restaurant is an installation; a living, ever-changing work of art that people become part of and help shape”.

EL FOUR SEASONS MADRID Y SU ALIANZA CON ÍCONOS LOCALES.

FOUR SEASONS MADRID AND ITS PARTNERSHIP WITH LOCAL ICONS.

There are only a handful of cases in which the arrival of a brand changes a city forever. When Four Seasons opened in Madrid, many questioned its chances of success because of its location –near the bustling Puerta del Sol and far from the upscale Art Triangle. What followed became a masterclass in urban renewal. With its opening, the neighborhood completely changed, ushering in a new era of sophistication. Since then, the Canadian hotel group has expanded its presence in Spain and will open a new hotel in Seville in 2027.

“WE’LL ALWAYS HAVE PARIS”

Paris belongs to that rare category of cities that seem immune to the passage of time. Here, architecture unfolds with an almost ceremonial rhythm, hotels feel like gilded stages, and art remains part of everyday life.

In the French capital, history reveals itself gradually: in the proportions of a public square or in the light filtering through a Haussmann façade at dusk. It also lives within properties such as the Bvlgari Hotel Paris, recently awarded the prestigious Palace distinction, an honor reserved for a select group of hotels that represent the highest expression of French hospitality.

The monumental clock at the Musée d’Orsay continues to frame one of Paris’ most unforgettable views, reminding visitors that here, time itself is something to contemplate. Beyond its glass face, Mary Cassatt’s intimate scenes –mothers, children, gardens, and cafés– capture the quiet elegance that still defines the Parisian spirit. Just steps away, the Louvre continues to safeguard centuries of history; in Paris, art never belongs solely to the past.

Art history has long credited Kandinsky and Malevich with the birth of abstraction. However, that story is increasingly hard to tell without Hilma af Klint, who chose to paint consciousness, nature, and the spiritual world.

“Paintings for the Temple”, the monumental series af Klint conceived as a symbolic journey, bringing the works together once again as she originally envisioned them while exploring the many sources of her inspiration, from esotericism to scientific thought.

artwork itself. The Fondation Louis Vuitton has dedicated all of its galleries –and, for the first time, its gardens– to “Calder: Rêver en équilibre”, an exhibition of 300 works displayed throughout Frank Gehry’s iconic building. Rather than celebrating the myth of the solitary genius, the exhibition places Calder back within the artistic dialogue he shared with Mondrian and Jean Arp, reminding us that revolutions rarely happen alone.

Mary Cassatt found one of Impressionism’s most original perspectives by looking where few others were: in the spaces where women could exist with greater freedom: reading, writing letters, or caring for their children.

To commemorate the 100th anniversary of her death, Musée d’Orsay presents “Mary Cassatt: L’indépendante”, the first major exhibition dedicated to the artist in France. Nearly 80 works, including paintings, prints, and previously unseen letters, trace a career defined by independence.

Paris never fully reveals itself. With more than 130 museums and only 12 hotels distinguished with the “Palace” designation, the city continues to find new ways to celebrate excellence. Whether getting lost inside a museum gallery or admiring the city from a hotel that showcases grandeur, returning to Paris is a reminder that here, beauty is an art form.

EN LA CIUDAD DE LA LUZ

IN THE CITY OF LIGHT

Paris happens to you. It lingers in the scent of rain on chestnut trees, in the bouquinistes along the Seine, in medieval streets, and in wine glasses. Cousteau used to say that in Paris, nobody feels satisfied as a spectator. Four Seasons Hotel George V seems to have been built around that very idea.

Since 1928, just steps from the Champs-Élysées, it has cultivated a legend of its own: Dietrich, Garbo, Loren. The Beatles even wrote “I Feel Fine” in one of its suites. Part of the art de vivre à la française is knowing exactly where to be. The George V concierge introduces guests to a side of Paris that is rarely shown in guidebooks. Its rooms are quintessentially Parisian: soaring ceilings, balconies overlooking blue rooftops, afternoon light, macarons, and New Order playing in the background. Stepping out on the balcony is all it takes to feel that all of Paris belongs to you.

FRENTE AL EGEO

OVERLOOKING THE AEGEAN

There is a moment when the Aegean Sea seems to forget every shade of blue ever known, only to invent a new one. A deep, almost liquid blue that shifts with the sun and transforms the coastline of Vouliagmeni. It is early spring and, although brisk winds still sweep the shore, gentle rays of sunlight settle over the freshly renovated white façades of Four Seasons Astir Palace Athens.

Located on the southern coast of Athens, about 30 minutes from the Acropolis, the property’s rooms are reason enough to visit, yet the true journey begins at the table.

The first stop is Helios, a vibrant Latin American restaurant offering an unexpected statement of authenticity: tacos al pastor that honor Mexican tradition while elevating it through impeccable ingredients, refined technique, and just the right amount of heat.

Japan is best explored slowly, allowing the city to reveal itself one moment at a time. Few properties capture the rhythm of a modern metropolis quite like the newly renovated Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo at Marunouchi, named after the iconic train and subway station beside it. Arriving – and exploring the rest of Japan – is remarkably easy thanks to the hotel’s direct connection to the station, where most of the country’s famous Shinkansen bullet trains depart. Despite its central location, the hotel feels like a peaceful sanctuary. It is home to Sézanne, one of Japan’s finest restaurants, ranked among the World’s 50 Best Restaurants’ global top ten and named Asia’s Best Restaurant in 2024. Today, it is an essential stop for anyone wishing to understand the enduring romance between Japanese and French cuisine.

SECRETS OF GETSEMANÍ

The newest addition to the Four Seasons portfolio took more than a decade to bring to life. This ambitious project brings together two of Cartagena’s landmark buildings under one roof, and the result is nothing short of spectacular. The journey begins in the main building, designed by legendary French architect Gaston Lelarge in the BeauxArts style, which was once home to the exclusive Club Cartagena. It has been meticulously restored and now houses the lobby, meeting rooms, Pizzeria della Chiesa, Atrio Bar, and the hotel’s signature restaurant: The Grand Grille. Walking across the property we then find a more contemporary building featuring a rooftop pool with breathtaking views of the historic city walls.

At the end of the property stands the former San Francisco temple, dating back to the 19 th century, now home to UMAI Spa, elegant colonial-style guestrooms, and a breathtaking ballroom.

By your mid-thirties, you start making decisions based on a very specific fantasy: old age. Following that logic of long-term body planning, I decided tennis would be my retirement sport. I pictured myself at a very nice club, dressed in white, wrapping up the morning with a couple of elegant serves followed by brunch with friends. Reality was far less glamorous. A few months after buying my racket, a combination of blind en-

thusiasm and less-than-stellar technique completely wrecked my right wrist. The medical verdict left no room for athletic heroics: straight to the operating room, twice, for a full reconstruction.

Walking out of surgery with an immobilized arm is a direct blow to anyone’s ego, but for someone with my level of intensity, it was an operational disaster. Being unable to use my hand forced me to stop seeing it as a tool for productivity and instead recognize it for what it had become: awkward and in pain. When my surgeon finally cleared me and suggested taking up manual activities to recover my fine motor skills, my first instinct was to find the most efficient option. I wanted to recover quickly so I could get back to producing as quickly as possible. I ended up in a ceramics studio, looking for textures that would awaken my sluggish tendons. I assumed working with clay would be easy; after all, I have spent 15 years mastering text structures and workflow systems. How naïve. Clay does not care about deadlines, much less about the urgency of my schedule.

The first few weeks were an exercise in pure frustration. Trying to center a lump of clay on the wheel with a weak wrist is remarkably similar to wrestling with my Pomeranian when she refuses to listen: a daily occurrence. Push too hard, and the piece collapses; be too gentle, and it warps. Clay demands complete physical presence and a subtle kind of strength that no YouTube tutorial can truly teach.

Little by little, what began as physical therapy became an act of resistance. I grew up believing every minute had to be optimized, yet the ceramics studio forced me to unlearn the need to rush. It was there that I discovered the relief of breaking free from the tyranny of productivity. My first flowerpots and vases were full of cracks, rough textures, and unpredictable glazes that the kiln transformed however it pleased. At first, I tried to fix every flaw until I realized that the beauty of handmade objects lies precisely in those imperfections. Clay taught me to embrace the beauty of slow processes and, above all, to let go of the idea that everything we make has to be useful or perfect.

Today, nearly three years after that fateful swing, my wrist works almost perfectly again. My hands no longer hurt, but my pace has changed forever. The racket is still sitting in the closet, buried beneath the only certainty those two surgeries left me with: the body has remarkably harsh ways of reminding us that we are not a production machine. As I pack a few tools for an upcoming artist residency in Portugal, I realize this journey is no longer about physical rehabilitation, but about curiosity. In the end, there was no mystical revelation at the pottery wheel, just a collection of crooked flowerpots reminding me of the immense relief that comes from allowing yourself to waste time.

In Zadún, through dishes such as seasonal braised beans with cashews and confit egg, Chef Eka Sunarya’s cuisine created a cultural exchange in which Balinese culinary traditions shone against the backdrop of South Baja.

The Mark is part of that New York from more than a century ago. Situated between Madison Av. and Central Park, just a few blocks from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the property takes an address that speaks for itself.

Black-and-white marble floors, a chandelier by Ron Arad, and the signature fragrance by Frédéric Malle coexist as effortlessly as Jean-Georges’ hamburger and caviar on the menu.

Since 2023, Caviar Kaspia has operated its only location outside Paris here, welcoming Met Gala attendees every May. The rest of the year, Jean-Georges’ signature hot dogs and a five-bedroom penthouse overlooking Central Park.

ON A DIFFERENT PACE

A OTRO RITMO

SUMMER OF SUN

it is No coiNcideNce that Marbella is kNowN as the “GoldeN Mile”. Its enviable location on Costa del Sol has made it Spain’s ultimate summer destination for more than half a century. Its beaches attract everyone, from Arab sheikhs and jet-set icons to celebrities and members of Europe’s royal families. In addition to being home to the traditional white villages of Andalusia, it has also become one of Spain’s premier luxury shopping destinations.

In the early 1970s, one of the region’s most iconic – and beloved – hotels was established. Puente Romano was created as a tribute to everything that defines Andalusia: its whitewashed façades, its passion for gastronomy, and above all, the warm hospitality that characterizes southern Spain. To get there, simply fly into Malaga and enjoy a short drive to the resort.

Surprisingly, Puente Romano Marbella is far more than a hotel, it is a one-of-a-kind resort complex comprising three distinct properties: Nobu Hotel, Puente Romano itself, and a Six Senses – the latter recently named Europe’s Best

Resort Spa. The resort has also received numerous accolades, including Best Lifestyle Hotel at the Beyond Luxury Awards and Best Resort in Spain by Condé Nast Traveler.

World-Class Cuisine

As if it was not enough, Puente Romano is home to 20 restaurants led by some of the world’s most celebrated chefs. It was also the setting for one of the most memorable moments in Spanish gastronomy, when Andalusian Chef Dani García earned his third Michelin Guide star before making the surprising decision to close his restaurant. Today, he has opened two new concepts within the resort, moving away from fine dining to present a more casual interpretation of his cuisine.

The resort is also home to culinary icons, including Spain’s first Nobu, the timeless Cipriani Marbella, and Chef Izu Ani’s GAIA, an outpost of one of Dubai’s most renowned restaurants. New York favorite Serafina Marbella also has a location here, while La Petite Maison recently joined the lineup, bringing one of the French Riviera’s most iconic dining experiences to southern Spain. For Andalusian evenings, SIPS from Barcelona has created a charming pop-up in La Plaza, where most of the resort’s restaurants are located, making it the perfect place for a nightcap from the bar that recently ranked number 3 on the Europe’s 50 Best Bars list.

The resort’s culinary offering is so extensive that every year it hosts Culinary Icons, an event that brings together its star-studded roster of chefs, including Nobu Matsuhisa, Dani García, Albert Adrià and Izu Ani. Together, they dedicate an afternoon to showcasing their signature flavors during a charitable event benefiting the Spanish Red Cross.

Cipriani, La Petite Maison y Nobu son tan solo algunos de sus restaurantes insignia./ Cipriani, La Petite Maison, and Nobu are just a few of the resort’s signature dining destinations.

Viaje interminable

more than just a handbag, mogwai represents the evolution of a brand that has turned leather into its own language. Founded by Tissa Fontaneda – who honed her craft at houses such as Loewe, Cartier, and Louis Vuitton before launching her eponymous label – the designer revisits one of her most iconic models, reimagining it with a cleaner, more architectural silhouette. Crafted from the House’s signature Bubble Nappa leather, the design strikes a balance between craftsmanship, innovation, and a sculptural presence that transcends seasons. An essential piece for those who see luxury as an expression of identity and enduring style.
