Reopening Of Exit Zero Filling Station Last week, after much anticipation, Exit Zero Filling Station became the proud owner of a liquor license — the only of its kind in West Cape May. On Saturday, we opened our doors to reveal a finished renovation (okay, nearly finished… we were powertooling right up to the end) and a spruced-up menu. There was laughter, a few tears (our own… we’re sleep-deprived) and plenty of good food and drink. We’re open seven days so come eat and drink with us!

SOME INTERESTING CAPE MAY TRIVIA AND FUN FACTS

Weird Sea Creature

Did You Know?

What We’re Reading

The anglerfish, which can grow to be 110 pounds, is a scary looking beast, but no worries — he prefers water up to a mile below the surface. The females have a natural, fleshy fishing rod that sticks out from their heads and glows in the dark to attract prey. To mate, males dig their teeth into a female’s belly until the bodies fuse permanently. They share a bloodstream, and all his organs — except for the testes — dissolve!

From 1941 to 1983, down by Sunset Beach, a workforce of 150 people spent their days in the Northwest Magnesite Company. Here, the mineral magnesite was combined with salt water and fashioned into fire bricks, key for the making of steel during World War II. The windowless factory operated 24 hours a day, with employees sometimes working 34-day stretches. Production resulted in a white dust that billowed continually from a smokestack, killing neighboring trees and stripping paint from cars. Today, the land remains barren and, as locals describe it, “moonlike.”

Homegoing Yaa Gyasi The plot, which spans generations and continents, follows two sisters (and their descendants) who never meet. Born in 18-century Ghana, one sibling marries a white British man, and the other is sold to slaveholders in America.

Here’s what the EZ team had for dinner this week

E

very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general vibe. The place: Exit Zero Filling Station, on the grand reopening day, now that the joint has a liquor license. The ribbon cutting: Thank you to the mayors and council members who waited patiently while we ran around like Bengal tigers without heads (hey, many of our menu dishes have an Asian flair) clearing up the last of our power tools/cleaning products. “I thought: ‘We’ll never be ready!’” explained operations manager/bartender Katie Repici. “It’s the kind of moment where you either cry and crawl into a hole, or just get it done.” (Spoiler: She got it done.) The run-ins: Shout-out to all the locals who came to check us out throughout the day. Head honcho of the Exit Zero Jazz Fest, Michael Kline, and his lovely lady, Wendy Guiles, a manager with Cape Resorts, broke their largely sober winter streak at our new bar. Mad Batter bartender Matt Reeves also came for a few drinks, where he explained he’s wandered outside of his house naked twice this week because “that’s where the beer fridge is.” (TMI, Matt, TMI.) Jeff Gernitis, owner of Fins and Peter Shields Inn, was impressed that gastender extraordinaire, Terry O’Brien, regularly makes menu recommendations from his post in this gas booth. “You don’t even find attendants in San Francisco recommending Thai shrimp soup!” he said. The bar: We’ve got four Cape May Brewing Company beers on draft. When Cape May Brewery president (and new dad) Ryan Krill popped in to pick up his takeout order, he joked, “Got anything good?” Our own head honcho, Jack, replied, “Miller Lite?” The murals: Jack is especially proud of all the freehand work painters Brian and Mike DeMusz, a nephew/uncle team, have done on the walls of our new space. “Come see my bathrooms!” he said to nearly everyone who walked through the door. The food: While Katie tended bar, Jack and Diane ordered a tasty panini (we have those now!), a Ridiculous Burger (yes, it has pineapple), and an order of our buffalo cauliflower wings. And they washed it down with Aperol spritzes, jalapeño mangoritas and Mumbai Manhattans. The takeaway: No really, go see the bathrooms.

Bartender Of The Week This week, Johnny Margs from Oyster Bay is up. How long have you been bartending? Ten years. Favorite drink to serve? Margaritas (guessing that’s how he got the nickname Johnny Margs), because I love sipping on them on my days off. What’s your bartending pet peeve? When customers wave money at me! Dream job? A professional snowboarder.

Chef’s Signature Dish Place: The YB Chef: Peter Gingerelli Signature dish: The gluten-free mac-n-cheese poppers are everyone’s favorite. My signature dish would have to be the BaconWrapped Scallops. They rest on a mint leaf with a red onion confit and a harrissa oil. These are sweet, salty, crispy and fresh all in each bite. It is my way of having fun with the food.

Wine Of The Week Collier’s Liquor Store 2016 Spring Street Winery Cabernet Sauvignon - $16.99 This dark plum colored Paso Robles Cabernet is rich in cassis aromas and ripe black cherry. This carries through on the palate with fleshy and leathery tones unfolding with ripe plum, huckleberry, dark roast coffee bean and subtle clove. Pairs well with any grilled steak topped with sautéed mushrooms.

The Exit Zero Filling Station Ambush Come get gas at our place and you might just get lucky!

It’s a pleasant experience getting gas at Exit Zero Filling Station. Our smiling faces, the cool vibe. Now there’s even more reason. This year we are giving away to random drivers a discount to enjoy at one of the top restaurants, stores, salons or activities, courtesy of the fabulous Exit Zero Discount Deck! If you don’t know what this is, you oughta! We also call it Vacation in a Box because it contains 50 great discounts to one of your favorite Cape May places — from $3 off fudge to $15 off dinner. It’s the real deal, and it only costs $20 for the entire pack. This week we bumped into Jim Segrave-Daly, from Havertown, PA who was headed back home after a weekend in Cape May for his wife’s birthday. We asked him to pick a card from the deck to enjoy. He picked out a $5 discount for HCSV. Who would he like to share this discount with? His wife Deanna.

I

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence

t’s another glorious (read: rainy) Sunday morning as I write to you from the cozy confines of the Exit Zero Filling Station gastender booth in beautiful, downtown West Cape May. Bryce Harper has played his first game as a Phillie, my clocks are now all correct, and I have a blazing hangover after celebrating the grand re-re-re-opening of our fabulous restaurant and gift shop on Saturday night. (NOTE: the hangover was acquired on my own, at home, from a gigantic jug of cheap red wine while watching Billy Elliot with my dancer son, and I’m not crying you’re crying. EZFS would never over-serve a customer.) But more on that later. For now, allow me to spam you with all the gigs I have coming up this weekend, which you should all attend, and at which you should tip the band heavily. Friday night my most excellent Beatles band, Love Me Dudes (listen, if I knew the band was going to stay together this long I would have come up with a better name…) is at Carney’s. We’re a part of their big St. Patrick’s Day weekend, which includes the Beer Olympics (think every drinking game you

played in college) on Friday. Saturday is the Kegs & Eggs breakfast, followed by a 5k run and Polar Bear Plunge at 12:15pm, with more live music and family-friendly goings-on. Sunday afternoon at 2 you can ring in the New Irish Year with The Rockets, a fantastic rock and roll band. We’re happy to be a part of it. Saturday afternoon, O’Brien & Joyce (me and my wing man, Tim Joyce) will be at Cape May Distillery in Green Creek, 2-5. We’re happy to be back after a handful of gigs last summer, but nowhere near as happy as bartender Tom Ward, who has been Facebook

stalking me for three months now, assuring me there will be food and drink aplenty and requesting Dolly Parton music (because every two-man acoustic outfit has a dozen Dolly Parton songs at the ready). Over at Nauti Spirits, Tim and I will be there Sunday, 3-6, for our very first gig. There, not ever. The wife and I popped in last week to celebrate my birthday with a couple of delicious Nauti cocktails (I forget what I had, which means it worked) and caught a few tunes by cutie pie Camille Peruto (keep an eye on her), and the place looks and sounds great. We’re super-excited to play there. On St. Patrick’s Day, no less! Thanks to Mad Batter Open Mic mahoff MQ Murphy for hooking us up with the gig. Finally, Sunday night, O’Brien & Joyce adjourn to the shiny new Brown Room, 7-11, to play all those super rockin’ cuts that you can’t resist. Can’t wait to play our first gig of the year in Cape May’s living room and scope out bartender Stephen Augustine in his spiffy white coat. So, if you’re keeping score at home, that’s

four gigs in three days. By 10 o’clock Sunday I’ll sound like something between Bob Dylan and Tom Waits. Should be fun. Circling back to my birthday for a minute, I believe my instructions last week were pretty clear: drop any gifts and/ or cash at the EZFS gastender booth. Pretty straightforward, I think. And yet, only Dennis and Kathleen Hughes were able to follow them successfully, bringing me a bag of extremely yummy chocolate-covered pretzels which lasted about four minutes. Kath and Dennis have been nice to me for going on 25 years now, which seems impossible since we’re all still 29. Anyway, Exit Zero Filling Station is now officially open for business! It came down the wee hours of Friday night/ Saturday morning, but we did it. And by “we” I mean everyone but Jack Wright, who spent the last three weeks at his desk “working on a book.” (Not to self: probably unwise to break the balls of the guy who signs your check.) While it may not mean much coming from me, I’m immensely proud of everyone who had a hand (or foot) in getting us over the finish line. Jack, Katie Repici (who only cried a little bit), Cathrine O’Brien (whom I’m personally quite fond of), Jose Ramos (who taught me a lot of new Spanish curse words), Mike DeMusz (who, on my birthday, made me help him load in a shelving unit from his garage that had two of every animal on it), Janet Westcott (who could teach a master class in hanging T-shirts) and everyone else who contributed, give yourselves an atta’ boy and a pat on the back. You’ve earned it. North Beach Health Club guru Mark Chamberlain popped in to lend a hand and help me move about 50 chairs to Jack’s house (FREE CHAIRS AT JACK’S HOUSE!). We had a nice chat about classic alternative music (Mark is quite a good singer, though he never comes to karaoke, which makes me unreasonably angry), and I made the fatal mistake of letting him man

March 14, 2019 the drill for a spell as I hung a bunch of shelves (the glass ones in the windows of the retail shop — you can tell I put them in because they’re all just about level). Mark somehow took a circular drill bit and made an oval hole, which I then had to refill, paint and sand while not cursing his name at all. Thanks for pitching in, Mark. Aside from that one thing, it was a huge help. His Royal Eminence Clarence Lear (didn’t he used to be Chuck? Politics really changes people…) came for the ribbon cutting with his lovely bride Karen. The actual ribbon was cut by West Cape May Mayor Carol Sabo, signaling a new era of… eating and drinking things in West Cape May. It was a festive day, full of pomp and pageantry, which I had to watch from outside because I was pumping gas. Looked fun, though. Mad Batter bartender and all-around Decent Dude Matt Reeves and I kibitzed for a bit out by the trash dumpsters (not as gay as it sounds), where he made the shocking announcement that he is, gulp, a fellow conservative. Don’t worry, Matt. I won’t out you. (Also not as gay as it sounds.) Oh yeah, Carney’s stuff! I told you I’m forgetful… In addition to this Friday, Love Me Dudes return on Friday, April 19, 7-11, and Memorial Day Monday, May 27, 3-7. The Memorial Day show is a return to our open mic roots, so we look forward to seeing and hearing a bunch of you. Play with the band or accompany yourself, we’re not picky. Feel free to Facebook me to pick your songs. And in June, I’ll be returning to host the Greatest Tuesday Night Karaoke Show on Earth. I’m going to need judges, a thankless job, but it comes with drinks. (Pete Daly, I’m going to need those score sheets again. Laminated this time. Get on it.) There’s one more piece of Carney’s news, but I’m out of room, so tune in next week for the thrilling conclusion. ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

saw with interest, and no small amount of glee, that a jaguar nearly ate one of those dreadful “selfie” people of the type we see around town all too often. Obviously this did not happen in Cape May — otherwise the front page of this very rag would have featured a headline saying, “Brave Topless D’Catur Wrestles Wild Panther Into Submission, Wins Medal”, and underneath would have been a photograph of me manhandling the defeated but unharmed big cat into a wooden crate. But the actual attack raised a pertinent point about wild animals in captivity and the ethos and moral morass that surrounds the practice. One that I will sidestep in order to address the much more important one, namely how do we ensure that here in Cape May more people taking selfies are successfully eaten by wild animals? I feel that such a discussion is overdue. Of course, there was a short-lived fad in this city in the 1890s for people having their visage painted in oil against a spectacular landscape or sunset. On average, such a work took five hours to complete even to mediocre standards, and the wet canvas tended to be

speckled with blown sand, strands of saltwater taffy and small children. Also, the more literal artists would paint through the sunset into the dark, ending up with a solid black canvas. But today’s plague of selfish-ies (as I call them, and am sure you soon will, too) is literally clogging our sidewalks and proving to be a hazard for those of us who like to proceed at a fast clip without having to take the time to halt and knock the cellular photography-capable telephone from the moron’s hand with our walking cane. We were planning a huge

Find Your Way Back...

mobile electromagnet that might pluck them into the air and into a concealed compacting machine, but tests on unsuspecting solo Shoebies had the unfortunate side effect of lifting the hapless tourists by their belt buckles, writstwatch straps and body piercings, which was no great loss to society but tended to clog our compactor. But this new development has opened up a marvelous solution — we will borrow/capture some ferocious animals and let them loose on the streets with the simple briefing that they may only eat those people who rather than screaming and fleeing, turn their backs and raise their silly camera phones. Thus far, we have failed to secure any lions, tigers or other apex predators, but I did find us a great deal on a pack of feral kittens, who I am assured can strip a man to the bone in under five seconds. All we have to do, the seller advises, is to attach a variety of enticing, fast-moving items to the intended victims, and we are good to go. I will update plans for our giveaway of woolen-pompom-and-feather capes, to be handed out at popular selfie spots this coming season.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, Sherlock Holmes Weekend

rose by any other name would smell as sweet, but would a detective by any other name be as interesting? Would Sherrinford Hope and Dr Ormond Sacker have been as much fun as Sherlock Holmes and Dr John Watson? Arthur Conan Doyle used these names in his rough drafts about the consulting detective. Somewhere in the writing process, Doyle decided that the common name of Dr John Watson better served the narrator. Later, Sherlock pushed out Sherrinford. There was a Chief Inspector William Sherlock who made headlines solving crimes in Lambeth, and Doyle had a classmate named Patrick Sherlock. Or perhaps Doyle, a cricket fan, liked the idea of a portmanteau saluting two outstanding players, Mordecai Sherwin and Frank Shacklock. While Hope may have been a salute to Doyle’s days as a medic on a whaling vessel of that name, he ultimately chose Holmes, perhaps as a nod to American jurist Oliver Wendell Holmes, who made a name for himself among the ladies and logicians of London during his long visits.

Make a name for yourself as a consulting detective with a Cape May weekend devoted to Sherlock Holmes. Solve the mystery of Sherlock Holmes & The Wake at the Wedding, beginning with The Game’s Afoot, a reception at The Rose Room of the Inn of Cape May. On Friday evening at 8:30, join the great detective and his faithful assistant as a crime unfolds. A cash bar will be available. Registration begins at 7pm; seating begins at 8pm. On Saturday from 1-3pm, join the Search for Clues Tour. This portion is great if you just want a little taste of Sherlock, because it

works as a self-contained activity as well as part of the weekend. Tickets are $15,. The Game Continues at the Rose Room on Saturday afternoon at 3:30 when you compare your findings to those of the famous detective. Have you matched wits with Holmes or are you on track to become this year’s clueless wonder? Return to the Rose Room Sunday at noon when Holmes Unlocks The Mystery! After a hearty lunch, Holmes and Watson announce the solution to the mystery and reveal the prize winners. If that doesn’t give you enough Sherlock, see Sherlock Holmes: Adventure of the Speckled Band at East Lynne Theater Company on Friday or Saturday night. Visit capemaymac.org for more information. Packages are available from $115 per person and include the Welcome Reception, the Search for Clues tour, and lunch. Accommodations and the East Lynne performance are not included. The Full Weekend Package, including accommodations and a dining certificate starts at $618 per couple. Call 609-884-5404, ext. 1-115 for details.

OPEN YEAR ROUND

Washington Common, Cape May 609-884-8643 l lynnardens.com

ARIES You will see Captain Marvel at the Harbor Square Theater. You will think that Brie Larson is great, but that her cat, Goose, steals the show. TAURUS You will set out to spend the weekend organizing your spice cabinet. You will actually spend the weekend looking at summertime photos of Cape May to remind yourself that, yes, it does get warm here. GEMINI You will consider taking up the flute. Instead, you will watch old videos of Jethro Tull while hopping around the living room on one foot. CANCER You will join a bunch of other crazy people at the St Paddy’s Day Polar Plunge. You will go all the way under. LEO You will rejoice that Gecko’s has opened back up for the season. You will order the pork posole more times than is reasonable. VIRGO You will get into a heated debate over whether it’s Beach Drive or Beach Avenue. Over cocktails at the new Brown Room, you will agree to disagree. LIBRA You will register for the Hallowed Half marathon because it’s never too early! You will buy something cute from Cape May Running Company as a reward. SCORPIO You will celebrate a portion of St Patrick’s Day at Delaney’s, naturally. You will drink three Guinness and start speaking in an Irish accent. SAGITTARIUS You will try meditating to reduce your stress level. But you will only successfully meditate on how stressed you are. CAPRICORN You will change the batteries in your smoke detectors. This is serendipitous timing because you will also set the toaster cord on fire while trying to fry an omelet. AQUARIUS You will finally nail the crow pose in yoga. But you will fall asleep during Savasana and that will be embarrassing. PISCES You will finally start watching The Big Bang Theory. You will realize they never tell you Penny’s last name.

The Movie Column

T

here is one film that set precedents on Oscar night, and in entertainment. Roma wasn’t the first film to stream online and appear in theaters simultaneously — but it was the first to get recognized by Oscar. I wanted to be impressed by the film more than I was. Why is it that some films simply don’t live up to the… Wait… was I going to say “hype?” This film had a lot of hype, but it’s not even that it didn’t live up to that. In ignoring the hype, I couldn’t say not living up to it made me feel how I did. My disappointment can be found in the film itself. In its opening sequence, I fell in love with Roma. It’s in black and white, offers sharp contrasts and beautiful cinematography, and most importantly it was deliberately shot. Each frame seemed to be expertly placed and unhurried. I appreciated the pace at first… in fact I thought it was meditative in some way. Our main character, Cleo, is not of the celebrity status we see all too frequently

By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society

in Hollywood. In fact, this is a debut for Yalitza Aparicio, a woman from a small town in Mexico who wonderfully plays our housekeeper lead. Aparicio’s story is fascinating, and the focus on her character, who most times is overlooked by society, is very much needed in Hollywood. Aparicio received an Oscar nomination for her role, but she was beat out. Still, she received several other awards and believe me when I say countless nominations across the world. I’m not sure you could find a better

director and storyteller in Alfonso Cuarón. He’s won four Oscars total… the ones he picked up for Roma this past year and for Gravity (2013). His choice of making films is as measured as his cinematography and directing. He demonstrates this in one scene from Roma that is so beautifully shot and completely compelling it makes the entire film. Why didn’t I love this entire film? I guess I learned there is a big difference between thoughtfulness and sluggishness. The storyline was not as gripping as all the other elements I’ve mentioned… and it needs to be to capture me. I was pulling for Cleo. I wanted her to succeed. With war waging and civil unrest all around her, she was the underdog I always seek in movies. The story just didn’t come together for me. In the end, story is the glue that needs to keep everything else together. Please let me know your thoughts on this film… or just tell me why I’m wrong. Email tomhsims@aol.com to let me know your impression of Roma.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My eldest granddaughter is five years old and our youngest is nine months. When we were visiting, we were struck with how caring and protective the elder was of her baby sister. On the other hand, she seems to create crying spells or fake booboos anytime the attention of her mother or either one of us gets too bogged down with the baby. I think my daughter is too short with her, especially when she woke up screaming one night. My daughter said it couldn’t have been a nightmare as she was just in her room minutes before. Okay, but clearly there is something awry. How can we help her navigate these waters? — Worried Mimi Dear Mimi To begin, a trip to Cape May County Zoo is in order. Your family needs to do something

Wise answers to perplexing questions

fun and low key. Secondly, a frank discussion must be had with your daughter and granddaughter. Acknowledge the problem. Mom’s attention probably is more focused on the baby right now, but that will change. That doesn’t mean there isn’t enough love for all. This must be said probably five times a day until the “threat” of being ignored diminishes. Also, go to Cape Atlantic Book Company and order Matthew Swanson’s Babies Ruin Everything. Have a good laugh about the whole thing.

Dear Answer Lady Our mother is British and cannot cook. She does have three dishes that are okay: fish-n-chips, roast beef and potatoes and, god help us, steak-n-kidney pie. The problem is, she always wants us to come over for dinner. There are three of us — all boys — none married, as yet. She especially likes having us over when there is a new girlfriend in the mix. She’s funny, charming and makes the best cocktails but she cannot cook something that is loved by our vegan/vegetarian/minimal meat-eating girlfriends. — Brothers Grim Dear Grim Bros The Answer Lady is too busy laughing but will manage to answer your question anyway. It’s simple. Cocktails and apps at mom’s. Dinner at the Blue Pig, PSI or the Black Duck. Or Delaney’s or Fin’s. So many choices. Also, consider that if your mother is not a good cook, she probably does not like to cook. Maybe your mother thinks she SHOULD cook but perhaps doesn’t really want to. And you Grim Brothers might well consider cooking yourselves. That’s why god made barbecue.

Bird Droppings

E

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

very spring I write a column somewhat like this one. If you are reading these words, you are poised to embark on a road to wonder. Yes, I’m talking about birds. Ten thousand of them across the planet, Ma Nature’s ambassadors to a world of discovery. Cape May is the ideal jumping-off point to begin this lifelong treasure hunt. We have the birds. More than 400 species and an extraordinary bird-watching infrastructure in Cape May Bird Observatory’s daily field trip program. Two hours. Easy walking. Interesting people from all walks of life and from all over the planet. You bring your interest and the natural inquisitiveness that got you through childhood. If you’ve lost this resource, bring a son, daughter or grandchild to guide you along. You don’t need to know how to tell a robin from a chickadee. That’s what the leaders are for. You don’t need binoculars — the leaders have loaners.

m a s s a g e Ÿ b o d y s c r u b s & w r a p s

All you need to do is arrive early. Tell the leader you are new to birding and be in the moment. Too geeky, you think? What will my friends say? Don’t wait to post news of your adventure online, take one or more friends with you. Birds like cookies can be shared. What’s more, if you start birding now, you have a whole season ahead of you. Spring migrants, summer breeders, fall migrants. Every day, May Nature deals a new hand. Come on a field trip and we’ll

show you how to play it for fun and insight. Different birds are tied to different habitats. You see a White-eyed Vireo, you know you are in successional habitat. You see a Wood Thrush and you know you are in mature deciduous forest. Bobolink? Grasslands. Yellow Wagtail? You are halucinating or you are uncommonly lucky. While widespread across Europe and Asia, in North America these tail waggers breed only in Alaska.Sightings on the East Coast are rare. Which brings up another reason to start birding. It’s the planet’s best excuse to travel. New location, new birds. Collect all 10,000 species you win a lifetime of travel Or you can just stay in Cape May, where the world’s birds come to you. Try it! One field trip. Dip your senses into a worldwide pool of discovery. It begins by going online to birdcapemay.org or stopping by the Northwood Center in Cape May Point. Tell them Seymore sent you.
