Ramblings From The Editor

C

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

ape May has had its first year under Mayor Chuck Lear. A year without the turmoil and conflict that plagued the eight years under his predecessor Ed Mahaney. Of course, I have to add, that almost all of that turmoil and conflict was provoked by Mahaney himself. He did seem to revel in such conditions. So, what to say of the first year under Mayor Lear? Well, there’s a big upside, and a small downside. The upside? Three little words beginning with C... collaboration, co-operation, communication. I’ve really only heard one criticism of Lear since he ran for office — that he has no ideas of his own. Honestly, I think that’s simply a reaction to the dictatorship that came before him. I’ve spoken many times with Lear since he won the election and, trust me, he does have ideas and plenty of them. He’s just not the kind of guy who needs everyone to KNOW something is his idea. And he’s someone who absolutely welcomes other people’s thoughts. In a nutshell, City Hall has transformed

from Mordor to the Shire. If you’re not a fan of Lord of the Rings, just Google it. Next year should be a pretty big one for the Lear administration and really show what he’s all about to any doubters lingering out there. Among other things (some which I can’t discuss just yet), a decision will have to be made on whether to build a new public safety center, incorporating the police and fire departments. That’s a decision that is likely to eat up about $12 million. It’s a tidy sum, but the city needs to make

’Tis the Season!

sure it doesn’t cut any corners. Just look at the pathetic catering facilities at Convention Hall for evidence of what happens when you cut corners. Mahaney did a lot of good things in leading the charge to get that building completed. But, for once, he compromised (the ONE time he compromised!) and went for a reduced-cost building that is incapable of catering major events — events that would have eventually paid for the increased building costs. So what’s the downside of the Lear administration? Because there is so little controversy, my columns now have the bark and the bite of a toothless Chihuahua. And yet, I DO have my first criticism to make of the administration... the new logo for the city that was unveiled recently. Logos are a very serious business. Very difficult to do well, and vital because they represent what a company or company or brand is all about. I’ve been involved in commissioning and considering logos for more than 20 years and it never gets easy. It’s a fine art. The logo the city chose is the perfect

Thursday, December 21, 2017 RAMBLINGS FROM THE EDITOR Continued from Page 15 example of what happens when too many people are involved, and people who may not have any experience of logo design. It’s got everything — a lighthouse, historic buildings, waves, an anchor, plus three different phrases — National Historic Landmark, Nation’s Oldest Seashore Resort (though the apostrophe is actually missing on the logo) and Proud Coast Guard Community. The incorporation date is wrong, too, but that has always been a bone of contention. Basically, they threw the kitchen sink at it. And it shows. It doesn’t have a message, except to say... hey, there’s a LOT going on in Cape May. That’s not branding. That’s what happens when council members get involved in logo design. The company the city used is a web-based collective that runs design contests. I’ve used them twice — once to commission a logo for Exit Zero Jazz Festival (big success) and a second time when I wanted a new logo for this magazine (that one was a big failure and a waste of money). They don’t cost a lot — taxpayers are only on the hook for about $1600 on this one. So that’s a good thing since this might be something the city wants to revisit and take its time over. I never thought I would say it, but this is the kind of decision that cries out for a committee comprising people who might at least have a decent understanding of what makes for effective logo design and how best to represent the city. There are talented artists in this area and experienced members of various cultural nonprofits. None of them were involved in this process. Instead, it was a decision taken by some members of council and people who design the city’s website. A logo can/should be used for a great deal of many purposes — from myriad merchandise to every single communication that

promotes and represents the city. It’s not something that should be taken lightly. Chuck and Co... I’d call this a fail. This is one situation where they should literally go back to the drawing board. This is my second-last opportunity to promote the Exit Zero Burns Supper, at Cape May Convention Hall on Friday, January 26. I’m excited that we’ve moved to such a big venue (albeit one that doesn’t have the kind of catering facilities a building like this deserves, but don’t worry... that won’t affect the food!) There will be around 320 people seated café-style, enjoying great Celtic music from Pittsburgh’s the Bastard Bearded Irishmen as well as the pipers and drummers of the Nae Breeks (translation: No Pants) band. We’re also hosting a whisky sponsor, thanks to the folks at Usquaebach, a fabulous 250-year old Scotch — the word means Water of Life in Gaelic and is mentioned in one of Robert Burns’ poems. Burns, in case you are unaware, is the great 18thcentury Scots poet — he wrote Auld Lang Syne among many others — who is honored at Burns Suppers, held worldwide. A FREE Usquaebach tasting begins at 5pm, which is when the doors open at Convention Hall. Even if you don’t drink whisky, you’ll be able to hang out in the lovely lobby and enjoy wine from Hawk Haven, beer from Cape May Brewing Company, Tito’s vodka and other drinks. Your super-cheap $35 ticket does not include drink, but it does include the entertainment plus a threecourse dinner — entrées are haggis, including the veggie type, or shepherd’s pie. Buy your tickets online at ezstore.us, or call our store at 609-770-8479 and pay by credit card... BUT, please note, we are moving out of our store on December 23, so if you don’t like buying things online, get yourself over to 109 Sunset Boulevard. In the meantime, Merry Christmas to one and all!

There’s no candy thats screams Christmas quite like the candy cane. Here’s a little holiday fun fact...about 1.76 billion candy canes are made each year and 90% of them are sold between Thanksgiving and Christmas. That’s a boatload of candy canes. So it’s no surprise that this week’s cocktail consists of... you guessed it, candy canes. The Washington Inn has a Candy Cane Martini which consists of vanilla vodka, peppermint schnapps, clear creme de cacao and a crushed candy cane rim. It’s deliciously sweet and perfect for those who didn’t save room for dessert, or just prefer to drink their dessert. So belly up to the bar and ask Robin to make you this delectable treat — we hear she makes the best. Cheers!

The Old Fogey

T

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

here will be no jokes about Santa and his bulging sack anywhere near my majestic column, I assure you! No double entendres or suggestive anecdotes about sitting on a strange bearded man’s lap and asking for an illdeserved present in return. No, I will instead tell you confidentially (as all of our “chats” are taken to be) of how the original Santa came to be… well, let us just say he is technically here, though not really able to deliver gifts, on account of being… now, I know many of you read this to your attentive families every week, in excited silence, but this would be the time to skip to the paragraph with one asterisk at the start. Do not, if you are under 10, or in the company of anyone of that tender age, read anything between HERE and that asterisk. Look, I’m not kidding, and I can clearly see you are ignoring me and reading on. Well, hell mend you, as Ma D’Catur used to say as she reached for her leather “manners” belt. Look, Santa is no more. He is deceased. Dead. An ex-Santa. He made the mis-

take of ignoring the signs atop the D’Catur Mansion chimneys saying that they were not for access, and tried to squeeze down one. Well, little did he know that they measure 30 miles, and loop around the whole city, being linked to the old smugglers’ tunnels, and also being where we dispose of post-season guests who talk too much. We sent Young Albert in to get him, but sadly, all that dog could retrieve was a single boot. And after a few weeks, the “ho-ho-help!” cries grew faint and eventually ceased. Damnable thing is, ever since, if we light the fire in the drawing

room, the smoke comes out five blocks away, and has a strange odor to it. Now, you can skip to the paragraph starting with **. *Santa is, obviously not able to deliver gifts on account of having visited Cape May, fallen hopelessly in love with the place, and retired here. He lives in a grand house, and although still obese, has swapped his redand-white color scheme for tan and beige. He is happy, but asks not to be identified, as his Scotch accent was not, he says, easy to perfect. I believe he runs a local business, but regretfully asks me to pass on that he can no longer make presents for you, so asking will result in a blow to the head. ** Of course, I had to step in and take the job, at which point I realized that the elves will do whatever I say, and now I have them make smaller, cheaper presents, and a separate range of self-assembly furniture that we sell worldwide. Also, I must say, now that I have put the reindeer out to pasture and installed proper jet engines to the sleigh, the whole operation is much more speedy.

The Activity Column

I

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, keep it moving!

t’s easy to believe that homo sapiens were meant to hibernate. After all, four other species of primates conserve energy that way — three lemurs on Madagascar and the pygmy slow loris of Vietnam. Other animals — like bears — exhibit lesser levels of energy-saving torpor that aren’t technically hibernation, but sure seem cozy. Many humans wake reluctantly on winter mornings, pondering strategies that would allow us to stay in bed, from skipping the morning run to skipping school or work. From the time of Hippocrates, doctors identified winter as a time of lethargy, and while crippling Seasonal Affective Disorder only affects 2% of us, almost 30% feel a form of winter blues. You may be tempted let all of your good habits slide, but somewhere in the back of your brain, a sensible voice tells you to get up and get moving. Exercise boosts your mood, says science. Sadly, when we need the mood boost the most, it’s hardest to get. Don’t despair. Experts say it’s okay to slow your roll. Take it down a notch, but do something. Maybe

a bout with the winter blues is not the time to start training for a marathon, but neither is it the time to sit still. Fidget, if that’s all you’ve got. Do a few squats in your cubicle. Take the long way to the copy machine. Get on the treadmill for five minutes. Such small movements won’t make you a supermodel or a superstar athlete, but they are a start. Five minutes becomes 10 minutes, and soon you are back in the groove. Shake your groove thing at Hemingway’s — dancing is a proven mood booster and it also burns about 400 calories an hour. Hemingway’s has a DJ on the weekends, and dancing provides social interaction along

with endorphins. If you’re a runner, consider shorter runs, and shorten your stride to reduce your risk of slipping. Run while it’s light, the better to avoid icy spots and scary humans. Consider a treadmill for the coldest days. Go roller skating at Convention Hall and burn 1,000 calories in a two-hour session. Admission is $5 per person. Skate rental is $2 for traditional skates and $4 for in-line skates, or bring your own. Admission for non-skaters is $2. The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady Our Christmas dinner is coming and I dread it. I’m a Republican, my wife and her family are Democrats. There will be no living with them given the current climate. I agree that there are problems and things did not go as I had thought they would, but I also don’t feel like being held responsible for the entire debacle the country is in. I can’t back out of the dinner and I don’t think I have the temper to put up with the verbal barbs for more than an hour without lashing back. What do you suggest, short of numbing my tongue, but then I won’t be able to enjoy dinner. — Little R. Dear Little R. The Answer Lady is sorry to say you will probably have to suck it up, otherwise, what

Wise answers to perplexing questions

kind of Christmas will that be? Besides, they outnumber you. Think of it as your gesture for peace and goodwill. You can suggest a ceasefire for the evening and hope they have the good sense to accept that. But should they decide to press their opinions, stop at Sunset Liquors before dinner and buy yourself your favorite bottle of scotch or brandy and know that it is sitting at home waiting for you to enjoy when the evening is over. And at least you will have yourself a very, merry, little Christmas.

Dear Answer Lady I am hosting our family Christmas party and there is one relative whom A: I do not like; and B: Is argumentative and a bore. I do feel guilty being so uncharitable at Christmas, but I have been to other affairs where she is in attendance and she puts such a negative pall that you want to leave. — Hum Bugged Dear Hum Bugged It sounds as though your priority is for your other guests, as it should be. There is no point in having a gathering that ends up a Donneybrook. Don’t invite her, but be aware she might get wind of it and show up anyway. In that case you must be hospitable. Worse, she will hear about it after the fact. At that point, you will have to decide if you lie and say her invitation must have gotten lost in the mail or tell her the truth — she is persona non grata. Either way, be prepared. Present her with an assortment of chocolates from the Original Fudge Kitchen and a poinsettia from Kate’s Flower Shop. If she hits you in the head with it, simply smile and wish her a Merry Christmas.

The Movie Column

his week... two very different movies to review — Lady Bird, a comingof-age film, and The Shape of Water, a romantic fantasy. Lady Bird is the first major directorial debut for Greta Gerwig, and it’s Oscar buzzworthy. Not knowing Gerwig, I can’t say if she’s writing what she knows about it — but it certainly seems so. The film is set in 2002, and our main character is Christine, a teen who prefers to be called Lady Bird. Gerwig would’ve been the same age at that same time. Lady Bird is, for certain, a complex kid. Saoirse Ranon masterfully plays the role and there should be Oscar buzz around her performance. In fact, this is one of the better cast ensembles in any of this year’s movies. And they had wonderful material as Gerwig has richly developed these characters. As in life, they are somewhat stereotypical but with enough contrasting nuances to make them believable. The family dynamic, the dating scene, the struggles to stay loyal to her real friends or figure out next steps after graduation — all of

Beauty and the beast collide in The Shape of Water these ring true as we watch our main character. Some of her choices are not always for the best, but they surely are relatable. Think of The Shape of Water as a cross between Creature from the Black Lagoon and Beauty and the Beast. The setting is Baltimore in the 1950s, and a government ocean science lab has procured one of its most astonishing “assets,” as the agents call the creature. The amphibian man (Doug Jones) has been subdued and will become the subject of

many awful experiments at the hand of Agent Strickland (Michael Shannon). Enter Elisa (Sally Hawkins), a single woman who works at the lab. She lives alone, is mute, and is dying to break out of her routine. Enter the Amphibian Man, who needs no words to steal her heart. It starts with a few simple words in sign language, sharing some hard-boiled eggs, and listening to music. Before the man is to be killed and completely pulled apart in the name of science, Elisa devises a plan to kidnap him. This film comes from the acclaimed director Guillermo del Toro, who gave us the wonderful fantasy film Pan’s Labyrinth (2006). In this film, the director goes to great lengths to give us the feel of the era and of a good old school sci-fi thriller. The cast here is also remarkable with Oscar-winner Octavia Spencer as Elisa’s co-worker and Richard Jenkins as her neighbor. I know I’ve been mentioning Oscar throughout this column — because you know what time of year it is. Next week, I’ll run down some picks for my favorite flicks.

Bird Droppings

A

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

s predicted by this columnist earlier in the fall, it looks like another big snowy owl winter is upon us. An immature male was recently captured in South Cape May Meadows, banded and released with a radio transmitter attached by Cape May Bird Observatory. Another bird was perched at the base of the bridge to Margate. When searching for snowy owls, know that most will not be pure white. Young birds resemble small, soot-flecked snowmen and some immature females are so heavily marked they appear nearly black. Good places to search include Stone Harbor Point and anywhere along the Bayshore. A good trick is to let other birds guide you. If a passing gull or hawk dives toward a particular spot or calls repeatedly, it might be harassing an owl. I’ve also noted that gulls foraging on the beach tend to avoid owls perched on a beach. If you see gulls spaced evenly along the water’s edge, focus your search on the section of beach where there is an absence of gulls.

But remember... owls need their privacy. Don’t approach an owl so closely that they are forced to fly. Their outward complacency may prompt viewers and especially photographers to get too close. When the bird swivels its head and stares, you are too close. Binoculars give you the intimacy you need. Now the big question. Why now? Once again, it seems that there was high nesting success among snowy owls breeding in the tundra regions of northeastern Canada. It used to be thought that owl invasions were

brought about by winter prey shortages but it is now established that big owl movements relate to an abundance of prey, primarily lemmings, during the breeding season. As long as dad keeps bringing in the lemmings, mom keeps mating. After fledging young owls disburse in all directions, and with numbers high, a goodly number head south with immature males being most likely to find their way well south of the birds’ more typical wintering range. In winter, lemmings are under the snow and even though owls have keen hearing, it’s so windy in the winter Arctic landscape that a lawnmower could be running beneath the snow crust and an owl couldn’t hear it. So in winter, waterfowl take up the nutritional slack. For more information about owl tracking efforts, go to project snowstorm.org or www. birdcapemay.org. The Margate bird tagged on November 29 was last detected just north of Atlantic City, so it’s a bird prone to wander. Your favorite stretch of beach could be next.

BRONSON maintains his big smile in spite of saying goodbye to his family when they moved and could not keep him. He was clearly loved by his family which included a small child who hugged him very tightly before he went to his kennel in the shelter. Bronson would be the best present this Christmas. Let him be loved again!

OLIVER is a senior boy found wandering in Woodbine. He is calm in his kennel and nestles in his bed. When it is time for a walk, Oliver ambles along like a distinguished, older gentleman and enjoys sniffing his new environment. He deserves to spend the rest of his years in a loving home where he can snuggle. He’s the perfect Christmas pup!

Three beautiful cats from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

PHILLY lived her whole life with her brother. Although their owner loved them very much, he could no longer care for them, which is why they ended up here. Unfortunately, due to her age, Philly often gets passed by for the younger, energetic kitties. But she deserves love just like all the rest. Won’t you be the one this Christmas? She’s waiting...

LILY is a sweet lady whose owner passed. Now she is here at the shelter with her last years ahead of her. It’s alot for this old girl to handle. Lily just wishes that she could find another home again. Quiet with someone that just wants another old soul with them. Maybe watch tv again or read the paper. Remember Christmas is only days away!

ARTEMIS is the sweetest kitty you will ever meet. She becomes mush in your arms the second you hold her. And her cute little black dot on her nose is irresistable. Just come in and see for yourself! Although she requires two shots a day due to her diabetes, she takes it like a champ because she loves the attention. Give Artemis a second chance!
