Ramblings From The Editor

T

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

his week, we’ve been away on a family trip (dogs included) to Portland, Maine. Here’s what I’ve learned so far: seemingly everyone in this state owns a Subaru Outback, a flannel collection and at least one dog. As I type this, we’ve just finished a walk along Willard Beach, where at least 15 mutts chased balls, tails and one another. Leashes aren’t a requirement along this stretch of Casco Bay. As has been the case every dog walk thus far (and there have been at least four per day since we arrived), there have been no scuffles between pets. Dog behaviorists will tell you: dogs off leash are less likely to show aggression toward people and one another. Because everyone is aware of the rules before they enter the beach here — signs indicate off-leash dogs “under voice control” are welcome — each owner is more relaxed, something else that contributes to a relaxed animal. On Higbee Beach in Lower Township, largely considered Cape May’s dog beach, there’s confusion about the rules. I’ve had

be leashed, which has a lot to do with protecting endangered species, like the red knot. But according to the DEP, this isn’t a year-round concern. So perhaps we should all take a cue from Maine and get on the same, leashlenient page, at least on Higbee Beach. There are only three more issues of Exit Zero between now and the next Burns Supper, so the countdown has begun. If you haven’t purchased your tickets yet, you’re going to want to get on that. For the first time, the event — happening on Friday, January 26 — will be held at Cape May Convention Hall. We’re also hosting a whisky sponsor so it will be a time of change for our little event (that’s not so little anymore). The doors will open at 5pm, at which time there will be a FREE tasting of Usquaebach, a fabulous 250-year old Scotch. The entertainment will kick off around 6:45 and will be provided by the pipers and drummers of Nae Breeks, and the Celtic tunes of Pittsburgh’s the Bastard Bearded Irishmen. All this (and me singing), plus a three-course dinner, for $35! Tickets online at ezstore.us, or call 609-770-8479.

³ quite a few run-ins with birdwatchers and other dog owners who’ve shouted that my mutts should be on a leash instead of chasing tennis balls into the water, or rolling around in the sand (for long-time readers of this column, this is Friday’s favorite pastime). So I figured I’d take an opportunity to clear up the confusion. According to a spokesman for New Jersey Fish and Wildlife, which manages the area, dogs are allowed to run free on Higbee between September 1 and April. The rest of the year, dogs are supposed to

Dish Of The Week GIFT CARD SPECIAL

Spend $50 & get an extra $10

As most of you already know, Victorian-style houses have some of the most beautiful ornate porches. Which makes dining in our quaint Victorian village by the beach all that more exciting. To be able to enjoy a bite over good conversation, while sitting on a porch that is over 100 years old, as horse-drawn carriages and people pass by, is a wonderful experience. That’s why this week we are sending you over to the porch at the Virginia Hotel. Order up a charcuterie board from the Ebbitt Room served with grain mustard, roasted nuts, marinated olives, seasonal pickles and crostini. And don’t worry about the nip in the air — there are heaters to keep you toasty.

WINE OF THE WEEK

3729 Bayshore Rd, N. Cape May (609) 889-7000 5Westpub.com

For this week’s cocktail, we decided to look towards one of the most influential novelists of the Victorian Era for some help, good ole’ Charles Dickens. Most of you know his famous works such as “A Christmas Carol” and “Oliver Twist”, but what you may not know about Dickens is that he had quite a heavy hand when it came to pouring himself a cocktail (if you know what we mean). This was a time when gin was all the craze — the spirit inspired Dickens in one of his short essays, “Gin-Shops.” So in honor of the man who brought us Ebenezer Scrooge, head on over to the Merion Inn in the heart of the Historic District and order up a classic gin martini at Cape May’s oldest bar. It’s historically good.

ENTER THE CLIPART CONTEST This is the Victorian Issue, which is why we hid a dapper little gentleman’s head in an ad. Enter in one of two ways: 1. Send an email to info@exitzero. us (write CLIPART CONTEST in the subject line) with the name of the ad that contains the clipart, including your name, address and telephone number; 2. Mail your entry to Exit Zero Clipart Contest, 109 Sunset Boulevard, Cape May, NJ 08204. Include your name and address. Entries by December 14. One winner picked at random will receive a $20 Exit Zero gift certificate. The winner’s name will be posted on our Facebook page each Friday. This is the size of the image you’re looking for!

The Old Fogey

D

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

id you know that Queen Victoria used to spend every winter in Cape May? Not summer — she was not a fan — but winter. It was here that she was influenced by our remarkable architecture and took the look back to England with her, making it a “thing” as the kids today call it? Absolutely true… we used to call the look ‘D’Caturian’, but Viccy, who was nice* but essentially a queen, and so very self-centered, renamed it after herself. *Nice is, of course, relative. She was fast friends with the late and not often lamented Ma D’Catur. The two of them used to sit on the porch outside The Ebbitt Room, like a couple of crows, making unkind comments about passers-by. That was pleasant for people who take delight in the mockery of others, but a whole lot less so for the ladies and gents (and small children and pets) whose appearance, facial hair (excess of, absence of, unusual styling of…) and gait were laughed at, and given unkind-butcatchy nicknames. It was also where Dickens wrote his

amusing little story A Christmas Carol, after seeing Viccy and Ma mercilessly mock who they took to be a small lad on crutches, who happened to walk past one evening when they were well into a bottle of port, and feeling the need to vent their ire on someone less fortunate. “Look at that one! He’s tiny!” Viccy hooted. “I shall call him Tiny Tim!” Well, how everyone laughed, including that craven wretch Dickens, until they realized that is was not, in fact, a small lame boy, but Cape May’s resident chimpanzee

barman, Alfonze, who was on crutches after trying to show off and open a bottle of bubbly with his feet in The Brown Room, at the same time as he uncorked another with his hands. A flesh wound on his big toe resulted, and thus Alfonze was in no mood for mockery that evening — without ado, he turned and leapt on the party like a hairy demon. It was fortunate that Prince Albert was a boxing champ and managed to fend Alfonze off until he was sufficiently calm enough to accept an offer of a glass of port and a cigar with the royal party. Viccy learned her lesson nd never mocked a chimp again — and in fact she had a secret royal bodyguard formed, made up entirely of vicious primates. Dickens even wrote the part of the volatile ape into his story, but found that while Cape May audiences were well used to various primates working in bars and shops, and in fact being elected to public office, English audiences were less open-minded, and so the literary genius of The Monkey of Christmas Past was replaced by a mundane set of ghosts. Bah, humbug, I say to this!

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, holiday shows to make the stars align

arl Sagan taught us that there are “billions and billions” of stars in the cosmos. On a Cape May beach on a clear winter’s night, it feels like you can see them all. Thanks to the season’s short days, you don’t even have to stay up past your bedtime. See what you remember of the constellations, or seek the winter triangle formed by the bright stars Betelgeuse, Sirius, and Procyon. You might catch the Geminids meteors around December 13, the Ursid meteor shower on December 23 or a manmade satellite being launched from somewhere in Virginia. Get up early and scan the pre-dawn sky to make sure Venus and Mars are still alright. Or, you can stay warm and seek the stars of Cape May’s stages this holiday season. Cape May has become its own star cluster, drawing talented people to entertain the community year-round. Sometimes you recognize the face or the voice, other times you just appreciate the talent. During the holidays, performers often leave their own families behind to make your holiday tradition possible. You can celebrate with the East Lynne Theater Com-

pany, presenting Louisa May Alcott’s Christmas. Gayle Stahlhuth performs stories of “love, laughter, and hope” for the holidays,” with themes that feel remarkable current. Performances are scheduled for December 7, 8 and 9 at 8 pm, with a Saturday matinee at 2pm. Tickets are $27, $17 for active military, veterans and full-time students. Guests 12 and under are always free. Visit www.eastlynnetheater.org or call 609-884-5898 for more information. Congress Hall presents another solo performer, David Alberts, in A Christmas Carol: The Radio Show. When the actors can’t make it through a snowstorm to perform the classic Christmas tale, the sound effects person gives

it a go, resulting in a fun and festive adaptation. The show runs through December 30, with no show Christmas Eve or Christmas. Tickets begin at $25, with Dinner & Show packages available at $59. For reservations call 609884-6542. Adult humor takes center stage at Cape May Stage as actors Jeremy Konopka, Curt Foy and Matthew Hardy star in The Ultimate Christmas Show (abridged). The Christmas show at Saint Everybody’s Non-Denominational Universalist Church must go on, resulting in a “silly, slapstick pastiche” that is an equal opportunity offender suitable for theater-goers over age 16. The show runs through December 30, and tickets range from $28 to $40, with discounts for students and active military. Visit capemaystage.org for more information. Or, pop in to the Carroll Gallery at the Physick Estate and gaze up at the stars decorating the boughs of a giant Christmas tree. Rediscover your childlike wonder with model trains and letters to Santa. The exhibit runs from through Sunday, January 1, 2018, and admission is free.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My mother told me to write to you. There is a girl in my class who makes me very jealous because she is good at everything. She is always the first pick for the soccer team and every other team. She gets straight As and to make matters worse, she is the nicest person I have ever met. I don’t like feeling like this. Is there a cure for jealousy? — Green with Envy Dear Green The cure is very simple. You invite her to Stewart’s for a root beer float or to your house for dinner and tell her you envy her talents and that sometimes you feel very jealous of her accomplishments. In all probability, she will tell you that she envies some talent you have and are underestimating. You make

Wise answers to perplexing questions

her a friend because it sounds like your envy can easily be turned to admiration. If she is as nice as you say she is, the two of you will find common ground to build a friendship and that is a much better feeling than letting the Green Monster get the better of you. And good for you that you realize that envy is a negative emotion. Dear Answer Lady My stepdaughter visited us this weekend. She was just getting ready to leave when my four-year-old granddaughter blurted

out, “My mommy has a baby in her tummy and I’m going to be a big sister.” I said, “When were you going to tell us that?” She said she wanted to wait until she was sure the baby was okay. She’s nearly four months along. This isn’t the first time her father and I are the last to know some vital event. It bothers me, but I’m not certain it’s justified. But this I do know — I married her father when she was just three years old and we have been there for her when others have not, including the last time she was pregnant when I was the one to give her baby shower because no one else would have even considered it. So, should I just shut up and let it go? — Hurt Dear Hurt Yes, the Answer Lady is afraid that is just what you have to do. You let her know you were not happy by your reaction and you want to keep those lines of communication open. Playing petulant parent will get you nowhere. Celebrate the good news with a trip to Happy Baby. And take comfort in the fact that doing the right thing sometimes is its own reward.

The Theater Column

t’s time for Christmas — and I need inspiration. I don’t have any decorations up yet so going to see the East Lynne Theater Company’s Christmas offering is just the boost I need. The mood is set as soon as you walk through the double doors into the sanctuary-turnedtheater. There, on stage, bathed in soft light is a soothing set that includes four chairs in front of a soft blue drape. The chairs have me wondering a bit (since this is a onewoman show). Behind the drape is a lone window with a wreath. I’m getting closer to feeling Christmas. Every Christmas, Gayle Stahlhuth, who has already spent a year overseeing East Lynne’s season and outreach programs, always has one last gift to give — her storytelling. The stories and poem that make up her performance this year are from an old favorite, Louisa May Alcott. Gayle settles us into the mood by reciting “A Christmas Dream” and “How It Came True.” Then she fills those four chairs as she introduces each of the March daughters

Gayle Stahlhuth is a master storyteller from Little Women and with ease takes on each persona both with voice and stance. Don’t worry, Marmee is given a place by the fire, which wasn’t on stage but Gayle did make me believe I was being warmed by it with the logs Jo fetched. The night and the story give a glimpse into a household incomplete because of a war, but helping those less fortunate and being selfless bring the family one of their most treasured Christmases.

“Tessa’s Surprises” gives us the added treat of hearing Gayle’s singing voice as she tells us the story of a little immigrant who raises money for treats for her younger siblings by singing for pennies. And she finishes with “What the Bells Saw and Said,” a piece about the spirit of bells who meet at the end of 1867 to discuss what they have seen. You will be very surprised to hear what they have to say. The whole evening filled me with holiday hope — and ready to put up my decorations! The play runs December 7, 8, and 9, 8:00pm with a matinee December 9, 2:00pm. Call 609-884-5898 or visit eastlynnetheater.org for details. The 2018 East Lynne shows include a Sherlock Holmes production March 16 and 17 then remembering World War I with A Year in the Trenches (May 16-26). On the Sunny Side of the Street, a musical review, is next June 13-July 21. Then the classic Arsenic and Old Lace, July 25-September 1, followed by a premiere work, Silent Sky, September 19-October 13. Lastly, there is Sherlock Holmes followed by O. Henry’s Christmas Tales.

Bird Droppings

I

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

enjoyed a rare privilege, the opportunity to take two beginning birders out on their first trip afield. Starting in Cape May Point State Park, our very first bird proved to be a flyover common loon. After fitting the pair with optics and going over their use, we mounted the hawk watch platform for views of multiple species of waterfowl before retreating to the Nature Conservancy Preserve on Sunset Boulevard. Where we enjoyed an avalanche of migrating robins, a very cooperative cedar waxwing and the usual host of yellow-rumped warblers along with a swarm of tree swallows. Near the end of the walk, I was surprised when John drew my attention to a tight flock of starlings flying over Cape May, a distance in excess of one mile. It takes most birders years to become attuned to distant birds but John picked out the “balling flock” before I did, unaware that the cause of the tight concentration was the hawk circling below, which was invisible without binoculars. With years of hawkwatching experience behind me, I could surmise that the hawk was

a Cooper’s hawk, a bird-catching raptor. Ducks are big, sedentary, boldly marked and usually stay in the open, where they are easily studied. Happily, South Cape May is duck-rich and the wintering birds inured to human observers. Particularly distinctive through binoculars were the drake buffleheads, whose brilliant white-helmeted heads stood out in the flock. Also conspicuous were the drake ring-necked ducks, whose white ringed bill is likewise conspicuous. The two tundra swans on the pond sim-

ply dwarfed the ducks and geese. Big, white, stately and black-billed, these Arctic breeders do not commonly spend time in Cape May. The larger, orange-billed, and highly territorial mute swans usually drive tundras away. But there was a big push of migrating tundras last week and two, at least, elected to stay. My favorite observation of the day was the northern mockingbird. It’s common in Cape May so usually doesn’t rate a head turn from experienced birders. But the birds’ proximity and the catalytic property of fine binoculars made it a favorite of my two companions, whose enthusiasm prompted even me to study the bird also. This is one of the best things about going out with new birders. Through their fresh eyes you get to see everything for the first time again. Our species tally after three hours of leisurely birding was 63 species; not a bad down payment on a planet that offers 10,000 bird possibilities and an avocation that can captivate you for the rest of your life. On to the next species...

JAYE is very well mannered and enthusiastic about life. Since she was a stray, we do not know if she lived with other animals, but feel that a slow introduction could have a good outcome. When visiting the homes of volunteers, she is calm and well-mannered in the house. Jaye would be a terrific companion in a loving family setting. Adopt today!

COOKIE is a young girl who is quiet in her kennel and watches as people go by. She lived with children as well as another dog and appreciates people that let her make her own pace at introductions. Cookie walks politely on a leash and takes treats calmly. She is a regal looking girl looking for a family that will make her sad eyes light up again.

WILLY is a long haired dachshund who loves taking long walks. He calmly waits until his harness is in place and then struts happily down the road. After his walk, Willy is comfortable in his bed or settling on his owner’s lap. Although he is ten years old, his activity level is that of a much younger dog. Willy would be more comfortable in a quiet home.
