Ramblings From The Editor

W

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

as so sad to hear of the death last week of Thomas Van Muenster, who for five years ran food and beverage operations at Congress Hall. Thomas was a gentle giant from Germany who might as well have had “What do you need?” inscribed on his headstone since that seems to have been the typical response when any of his colleagues really DID need something. And he always delivered. “Thomas could be counted on like few people I’ve known in my life. If you asked for it, Thomas would make it happen,” says Patrick Logue, Vice President of Cape Resorts. Having worked with Thomas on a few projects, I can attest to that. A lovely man who will be badly missed by his many colleagues and friends — most of whom are one and the same. It’s election time this coming Tuesday, November 7. And while this day may not hold the great drama of one year ago when Chuck Lear swept Ed Mahaney out of power in Cape May (you thought I was going to mention ANOTHER election, didn’t you?), I hope you will take the time to visit your local polling sta-

³

tion. Remember, kids... voting isn’t a luxury... it’s a privilege you need to exercise. Here on the island, the people of West Cape May have the chance to vote back the three incumbent commissioners — Pam Kaithern, Peter Burke and Carol Sabo — and I sincerely hope they do. Our business is located in West Cape May and I live half a street away from the border — yep, Stimpson Lane is cut right down the middle. Why? I have no idea. Just as I have no idea that my street is called Stimpson Lane at one end and Stimpson’s at

the end. Seriously. Anyway, I have always found these three a pleasure to deal with. They’re active — very active — members of their community. Go to any fundraisers on this island and there is an excellent chance you will see one, two or all three of these guys. They put their money, and their legs, where their mouths are and their stewardship over the years has helped West Cape May purr along quite nicely and evolve into a compatible neighbor to Cape May, one that is starting to punch above its weight in terms of attracting visitors — as well as being a great place to live. Speaking of Kaithern, Burke and Sabo, I was happy to see them eat curry at the fundraiser for the Christmas Parade at Exit Zero Cookhouse last Thursday — they were the only candidates in the election to pay their money and turn up. We raised more than $2200. You’ll get another chance to eat good food and help the parade this Monday, November 6, when the good people of Fins hold a spaghetti and meatball dinner from 4-8pm. Cost is $15 and all proceeds go to the parade.

Fabulous Food & Cool Cocktails in a Casual Pub Atmosphere!

King Porter Stomp Chocolate Porter ABV: 7.5% CM Brew CO This brew hits you with an assertive chocolate presence, the smooth notes of natural chocolate in perfect syncopation with the five different malts that make up the bass line of this robust beast. Medium-bodied with a chocolate milk-like aroma.

WINE OF THE WEEK Poe Pinot Nouveau Sale: $9.99 from Sunset Liquors 106 Sunset Boulevard

This red is made in the style of Beaujolais Nouveau resulting into a delicate and fruity wine with beautiful notes of wild strawberry. It is simply delicious. Pairs well with duck, goose and other game birds. The perfect Fall wine.

I mustache you a question. Got milk? This Movember, if you’re trying to sport the ultimate adult milk mustache, why not take a note from the man who wore it best. Yes, we are talking about The Dude. Jeff Lebowski not only made the White Russian, or as he likes to call it, the Caucasian. And he did it while also rocking a stache. If you Google what not to drink if you have a mustache, the folks online will tell you to avoid frothy or milky products. We say go for it. They are quite delicious. Made with vodka, Kahlua and cream it tastes like a milkshake over ice. Stop by the Brown Room for this tasty cocktail and nestle in next to the fire. And don’t forget to bring your mustache.

We at Exit Zero don’t like to conform to the norm, if you couldn’t already tell. So when researching foods that mustache-wearing guys should eat, all we could find were dishes that men with mustaches SHOULDN’T eat. Things like soup, powdered donuts, noodles, wings... you get the drift. But where’s the fun in that? Don’t real men like to get down and a little dirty? So for our dish we decided on the messiest of messy to stick in the stache and maybe save for a nice little lick of the lips taste for later. Like the house hickory and cherry smoked baby back ribs from Lucky Bones. Enjoy. And check the mirror after you’ve eaten!

The Old Fogey

D

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

id you know that our fair city was once the Mustache Capital of the World? To be accurate, it was the “Moustache” capital, as that trend was brand new from England, and we in the colonies had not yet come up with the notion that in order to show our superiority we needed to spell things in such a way that Wildwooders might understand. Back in the day, every man, woman and child in Cape May wore as splendid a mustache as their genes allowed. I recall the late Ma’ D’Catur sporting a needle-tipped creation six feet across, styled and waxed like a steer’s horns. This gave the old monster the excuse and subsequent legal protection to spear anyone that annoyed her as she swept along the sidewalks like Boudica’s spikewheeled chariot decimating Romans. I, using a cocktail of gum arabic, soap and a hint of sandalwood, opted for a more stylish creation that blended mustache and beard hair into a little dancing bear that appeared to float just in front of my face. Of course, not everyone was quite as

stylish: Ernie Hemingway, for no reason that made sense, styled his bushy beard and mustache into a scarily convincing mirkin. He oved the attention, the fool. In time, Friday night became the time for people to strut their staches along the boardwalk. Applause, ridicule, prizes, modeling contracts in Europe: all were up for grabs. What went wrong, in the end, was when dogs and cats were allowed to take part. Cats tended to opt for toothbrush mustaches, which is no surprise, but the town’s dogs were four-footed works of art. The Young

Albert of the day had cultivated the Yorkshire Terrier’s natural mustaches into a work of some sophistication, but given his poor reading skills, he misread the instructions for the homemade pomade. Instead of petroleum jelly, he used petroleum AND jelly. Well, who knew that the hound had devised a perfect forerunner of napalm? No one, had he not walked too close to Ernie and his mirkin face, during his victorious ‘stache walk. Ernie’s mirkin was smoking a fat cigar (don’t ask) and as he applauded Albert’s extravagant display, a spark landed on the tip of a perfect hairy point. The result was not so much a fire as a “whoosh” that tore the length of the boardwalk, igniting a hundred pomades, gels, waxes and polishes. The amazing thing was that such was the swiftness and ferocity, not a life was lost. But neither did a single hair survive. The smell was, I assure you, horrid. By the time any person or animal in town could manage to grow hair again, all enthusiasm for the mustache craze was gone. It’s why everyone over 40 in this city wears a wig, too.

The Activity Column

T

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, it’s all happening at the zoo

is the season of scary creatures, which makes it an excellent time to visit the zoo. The Cape May County Zoo is a great way to give yourself a different kind of scare. Check out the reptile house and get to know some real-world dragons. Ponder the frightening environmental risks facing the endangered animals. Salute the spirits of animals who have gone on to that great savanna in the sky, especially Rocky, the tiger who kept pace with my toddlers along the fence and taught me what fear-fueled adrenalin really feels like. If you need more of a thrill, try the Tree to Tree Adventure Park, open weekends in November. The adult zipline will take you 40 feet in the air and give you a terrifying reminder that you are no longer 40. You’ll gain a new perspective on the world, but don’t kid yourself — you’d better be fairly fit if you want to enjoy your time in the treetops. For adults, there’s an aerial adventure course — an obstacle course set high up in the trees. Each self-guided course features

ladders, tight ropes, balance beams and wobbly bridges. The fee is $50 for ages 11 and up. Your reach must be 5-11 or more, the maximum weight is 300 pounds, and the maximum waist is 44 inches. Participants must wear closed-toe shoes and dress for the weather. Arrive 30 minutes before your reservation for a training session, and then you are off. The course and zipline take about three hours to complete. You will be exhausted. If you want the zipline only, you pay $35. There’s a juniors’ course for ages 10 to 13 who can reach 5-9 for $40, and a $30

kids’ course for ages 7 to 13 who can reach 4-7. Call 609-388-8289 If you’d rather keep your feet on the ground, consider Pirate & Princess Day at the zoo on November 18 for a singing showcase, trivia, a scavenger hunt and more. Costumes are encouraged. The Cape May County Zoo is open from 10am to 3:30pm in the fall and winter. It is located at 707 Route 9 North, Cape May Court House. Admission is free, but donations are welcome. The Zoo is a member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and participates in the Species Survival Plan. You can become a Zoo Friend online (capemaycountyzoo.org) to support the new primate house or any of the zoo’s programs. Call 609-465-9300 for more information. On the way back to Cape May, take the kids to the fancy McDonald’s in Cape May Court House, where you they have flowers on the table and bring you your food, because after the ziplines, you may be too exhausted to ever move again. The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I lost my job two years ago. I was a social worker who was injured on the job and am now disabled. My sister had a house on the island and I was grateful that she gave me a roof over my head, but this year, she decided to sell her business in Pennsylvania and has moved in with me. Problem is, she is a bully. Here I am at 55 with my sister insisting on making dinner every night, cooking food I don’t like. The television is always turned on to some political channel. I like the Hallmark channel. She doesn’t want to go out — ever — and I feel like I am a prisoner. I don’t want to go to dinner or get a cocktail by myself. What should I do? — Lock Down Dear Lock Down You need to look into an assisted living

Wise answers to perplexing questions

situation and actively take action to change your circumstances. If that is not feasible, try to make peace. Two people, especially sisters, in the same house morning to night can’t be healthy for either. Get out of the house as much as your disability allows. Volunteer at MAC (Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities), the Nature Center or at Cape Regional hospital. Join the VFW. It is a great place to meet people and have fun. Who knows, maybe your sister will be inspired by your independence.

Dear Answer Lady My three children have already made it quite clear I am not invited to any of their houses for dinner this holiday season. My two daughters are both single and are going to their boyfriends’ homes but my son is married with two children. His wife has made no secret that my ex-husband and his new wife are welcome but not me. Don’t you think my son should stand up for me? I’m the one who raised him not his father. — Odd Mom Out Dear Odd Mom You might want to consider the fact that you’re not a whole lot of fun to be around. Why would three out of three children want to be anywhere but around you? For the sake of argument, let’s say you are the victim. Why would you want to be somewhere where you are not wanted? Take this opportunity to host your own dinner sans family. Lucky Bones and the Washington Inn will make Thanksgiving dinner to go. You might be surprised how desirable your company might become, once it is clear you can have a good time without them.

Bird Droppings

I

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

f the town of Cape May was to choose an emblematic bird, I’d suggest merlin, a feisty, pugnacious crowd pleaser of a falcon. More birders come to Cape May to be entertained by this species than any other. The bird’s sudden appearance on the hawk watch platform prompts every hawk watcher to slam binoculars to eyes. The human reaction is so rapid and universal, it looks choreographed. If there is nothing else to pursue, merlins harass each other. I’ve even seen them catch birds as agile as tree swallows and woe to any dragonfly that has the temerity to blunder into merlin airspace. Veer, accelerate, and “snap.” Yes, you can even hear the impact of insect upon falcon talons. Yes, the carnage is disquieting but so popular is the falcon that only once have I seen the hawk watch crowd side with the victim. The encounter involved a female merlin and a yellow-billed cuckoo. The chase ended right in front of the platform at Cape May Point State Park. Just before impact, and in front of 50 pairs of

eyes, the cuckoo opened its mandibles and screamed. Half a second later, fifty pairs of eyes very contritely focused their attention upon their shoes. It is, in other places, quite rare to see birds of prey capture prey. Leslie Brown, a world authority on eagles, only saw golden eagles capture prey twice in a career that spanned decades. Merlins, like most raptors, typically target those species that are most abundant, with a particular focus upon flocking

species. Cuckoos are not flocking species. It was just uncommonly bad luck that led to the yellow-billed’s demise. Cuckoos are mostly sedentary, a good strategy when merlin numbers are elevated. Where most hunting birds of prey are only successful about half the time, adult male merlins’ batting average approaches one thousand. I have never seen an adult male merlin fail to secure prey. Good news for young merlins, who are depending upon dear old dad to arrive with dinner. Speaking of nestling merlins, this northern species is expanding its range south and will likely be the next bird species to be found breeding in New Jersey. A popular bird among falconers, in day’s of yore, merlins were most commonly found upon the wrists of female royalty, while the peregrine was flown by gentlemen. If your objective was a rabbit in the pot, merlin, as a small bird-catching raptor, was a poor choice. Peregrine? This larger falcon was adept at killing waterfowl, pheasant and ptarmigan, and still is.

Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

ANGUS is a young adult of about three years of age and is relatively large weighing 72 pounds. Although he came to the shelter as a stray, he had clearly lived in a home based on his calm demeanor and familiarity with basic behavioral cues such as sit, wait and stay. He is easy going and polite when meeting new people. Adopt today!

JAX is a typical, friendly black lab mix who was surrendered to the shelter at one year of age. Max loves to play ball in the yard and is a champion at fetching and returning the ball to continue the game. He seems to have boundless energy so would do well with an active family. Stop by the shelter and adopt Jax today!

NIKA is an adorable 25 pound puggle mix that struts happily at your side when walking on a leash. Although she is a bit shy in the beginning, once she warms up to you, she is an affectionate little girl and enjoys pouncing on squeeky toys. She would love to be in a home with older children so she receives all the attention. Adopt this sweet lady today!
