Talk Of The Town GOINGS-ON AND GOSSIP IN AMERICA’S ORIGINAL SEASIDE RESORT

Local Legend Retires Even if you’re not into rock and roll, you’ve likely heard of Mike Jagger. In the same way, even if you’re not into birding, you’ve likely heard of Pete Dunne. His superstar credentials in this world include: author of books (Pete Dunne’s Essential Field Guide Companion and Pete Dunne on Bird Watching, among others); author of articles (The New York Times comes to mind); vice-president of the New Jersey Audubon Society; founder of the World Series of Birding; and Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory, a position from which he is now stepping down, though he’ll continue offering his services to CMBO. “The decision brings with it a mixed bag of emotions,” says Pete, who, at 37 years in, is New Jersey Audubon’s longest-serving staffer. “Hopefully I’ll be able to continue a lot of things that have been gratifying, like writing and introducing people to bird-watching.” No worries, Exit Zero fans, Pete has no intention of discontinuing his Bird Dropping column, despite the fact that typing has gotten difficult since the stroke he suffered in March. “That was somewhat catalytic,” he told us. “It makes you realize you may not have the time to do all of the things you’ve planned.” But Pete is transitioning to his new role with a host of fond memories in his back pocket, many of them involving the “splendid” people he’s worked with along the way. “Cape May is such a remarkable and unique place, and there is such a deep talent down here in terms of birding skills,” he said. “It’s also such a sharing place. People who come here marvel and just gush about how generous everyone is with the sharing of information and offering of help. It really is so reaffirming. I could go on about Cape May forever.” FRIDAY 11/22: Cloudy High 56 Low 47 / Sunrise 6:51 Sunset 4:41

Pete Dunne (top left) in one of his favorite places, the Hawk Watch platform at Cape May Point State Park. The birding legend will be retiring from his position as Director of Cape May Bird Observatory.

Pete’s colleagues speak just as highly of him. “It’s been a helluva ride!” said Sheila Logo, CMBO Marketing Director. “Pete’s passion for making Cape May known as a world-class birding destination is only exceeded by his talent to do so. This little pinpoint at the bottom of the state has been featured in every major media outlet around the globe. He has made Cape May the model for eco-tourism which has been emulated throughout the world. But he’s always made time to listen, put his feet up, share his thoughts, feelings, ideas, and a good joke.” Marleen Murgitroyde, Business And Events Coordinator, said: “Pete has made me laugh, cry, and reflect just with a few words from his pen. I’ll always remember sitting around having a beer (after work, of course) listening to his newest stories or one of his Solstice appeals. He’s one of

the most respected people in the birding world, whether it’s because of his birding skill, his way with words, or his knowledge of natural history. Pete, thank you for everything you given to all us for over the past 37 years.” Best wishes in your new position, Pete, and thanks for all you’ve done for Cape May.

David’s Disaster Relief When we called local artist David Macomber about the 13-day trip he is making to the Philippines this week to assist with the typhoon aftermath, he was clearly uncomfortable about being made center of attention in Exit Zero. But when it comes to volunteering in underprivileged or, in this case, devastated areas, David is right at home. “For the last 10 years, probably once a year, I go on a mission trip with my

church to do humanitarian work,” David said. “I was in the Philippines about seven years ago. My dad and I, along with a whole team of people, built a church and community center, while my wife worked with children, distributing food.” This time around, the goal will be to deliver food, medicine and water filtration systems to villages in need. The latter are attained through an organization called Waves for Water, which has distributed 100,000 filters, each of which can provide six months’ worth of clean drinking water for 14 people, around the globe. The nonprofit also served our neighbors after Hurricane Sandy. “I have always felt like, as a world, we’re all one people,” David said. “We have our countries and our borders, but we’re all human. As an artist working for myself, my schedule is kind of flexible. That’s a real blessing; not a lot of people can take a week off. I just feel like it’s the right thing to do.” If you’d like to contribute, you can drop donations off at Big Wave Burritos

on Texas Avenue. Or, purchase a piece of David’s art — 100% of the proceeds this week will go toward relief in the Philippines. Visit sharksugar.com to check it out. And finally, we want to plug David’s upcoming art show (even though he wouldn’t dream of asking us to do so in an article of this nature) happening at Galvanic on the Washington Street Mall this December 11 and 12, which are hospitality nights. We love to support the work of talented local artists, especially ones with a heart as big as David’s. A Rock(ette)ing Good Show One graduate of Erma’s Jersey Cape Dance and Gymnastics Academy is feel-

ing especially grateful this Thanksgiving season. And why wouldn’t she be? Twenty-three-year-old Megan Miller is seeing her life-long dream — performing with the Rockettes in Radio City Music Hall — come true. “I’ve had former students perform on Broadway and with Justin Timberlake and at Disney,” said Jersey Cape Owner and Artistic Director and West Cape May resident Stina Smith. “And I’m proud of all of them; everyone wants to dance. But Megan never wanted anything else. She studied with me from the age of four, and even the very first time I met her, she told me: ‘I want to be a Rockette.’” But it’s a tricky business, being cast as a Rockette. The troop is 156 women strong, all of them between five-footsix and five-foot-ten in height. “You could be magnificent,” Stina said, “but if there isn’t an opening for someone your height, you won’t be hired.” Between 400 and 500 dancers — proficient in jazz, tap, and ballet — audition every year. the Christmas Spectacular — the Rockettes’ most famous show and the one in which Megan is currently performing — only 12 ladies were selected, according to New York Daily News. “She went through a lot to get to this point,” Stina said. “She did a summer intensive with the company when she was 18 or 19. The second year, she was scholarshipped by them to come back and do another intensive. The following year, they asked her to be an assistant, then hired her as a teacher. Throughout all of this, even while teaching young girls how to be a Rockette, she was auditioning… and coming very close every time.” Megan kept at it until she was hired as part of a Rockette touring company, performing in Illinois, Texas, and Florida… but not at Radio City. Adding insult to injury, her twin sister, who’d given up dance at a young age in favor of sports, had landed a physical therapy internship with the Rockettes, meeting all of the dancers and getting a first-hand look at back-stage Music Hall life. “Poor Megan was dying,” Stina said. Then, this June, Megan auditioned one last time, hoping to at least be cast in the upcoming spring show. That night, while staying in a friend’s apartment in New York, she got the call, inviting her to join the Radio City Rockettes for their Christmas Spectacular. She screamed so loud, she told friends, that people in the next apartment over thought she was being murdered. On November 8, Megan’s former Jersey Cape teachers traveled to the city to see the show and get a backstage tour. “It was magnificent,” Stina said. “And it was that much more magical, seeing her up there.” The Christmas Spectacular runs until December 30. Visit radiocitychristmas.com for tickets. Congrats, East Lynne East Lynne Theater was one of five Equity professional theaters in New Jersey selected to help decorate the Governor’s Mansion, called Drumthwacket, for the holidays. “How’s that for a name?” says East Lynne’s Artistic Director Gayle Stalhulth. This is a great honor considering the mansion, located just outside of Princeton, receives around 6,000 visitors between Thanksgiving and New Year’s. “Three of our costumes, designed and built by [East Lynne costumer] Marion T. Brady, will be displayed from our fall 2012 production of It Pays to Advertise,” Gayle told us. “Originally on Broadway in 1914, it is about the absolute power of advertising with actual facts and figures about what the likes of Kodak and Kelloggs spent in 1914, at the time World War I began in Europe.” And what, exactly, does that have to do with Christmas? Look no further than your television set for the answer to that. “What is Christmas without shopping!” Gayle said. “The lure of the advertisement. Our display will be as if one of our mannequins is looking at a shop window advertising clothes of the period.”

The Movie Column

S

By Dottie Knapp, President of Cape May Film Festival

OME reviewers can be more entertaining than the screenwriter’s story because they don’t have to worry about plot or dialogue or character development. I’ve read some reviews about Thor: The Dark World and when a reviewer gets bent out of shape because the plot of the movie is derivative, I have to ask, “You do know these are based on comic books don’t you? “ Thor: The Dark World is the second installment in the Marvel series. The story follows a superhero of mythical proportions (literally — they are from another realm where gods reside and can sometimes play havoc on our poor little existence here on Earth). Another comment I read said (and I paraphrase), “The stakes were so high that (mild spoiler alert) you know that the bad guys have no chance of succeeding.” Again we’re talking comic books here! We are also talking Marvel franchise; there is no way any of your major characters are going to be put down for good. I caught an online blog where someone

Hemsworth and Portman in Thor: The Dark World said after it appeared that a particular character had died she was going to walk out of the theater. Really? Chris Hemsworth plays Thor, and thankfully does beautifully display his magnificent torso — but he isn’t going to be done in by his nemesis Loki (played by Tom Hiddleston). Just an aside — I don’t have an official position about Hemsworth’s torso, but his face is most arresting! Loki is the mischief maker and Hiddleston’s smile and eyes express his glee

as much as his words. Natalie Portman as Jane slips into her role of super-smart physicist although her Harvard degree is in physiology. See, even comic book characters are sending the message to young girls that you can be bright, study science, and who knows you might meet a demi-god. Kat Denning provides a great deal of the humor, but she is so much herself that I keep wondering why they are in London and not New York City. Maybe they aren’t in New York because that’s still a mess from the Avengers, so they have to tear up London this time. I thought the movie was fun. It is more lightweight than the Iron Man series, but there is plenty of humor, romance, a little pathos and some lovely CGI effects. Let me remind you to sit through all the credits — don’t leave until the lights come on. You’ll be glad you did. PS: My husband insists I mention that he thinks Natalie Portman is gorgeous. If you’ve seen a movie and you want to make a comment, email us at capemayfilm@hotmail.com.

The Old Fogey

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

I

T IS time to announce some exciting and creepy plans. In time for next tourist season, we are planning an expansion of our ghostly population. The fact is, Cape May is not just attractive to the living, but to the dead. A recent survey has shown that our city is to be ranked number one in Fodor’s Places To Haunt Guide 2014. They get bored, you see, those spirits, and crave excitement, so the prospect of regular gigs in such a spooky seaside town appeals. Thus far we have had scores of enquiries through mediums: a trio of gray ladies asking for lace curtains to twitch, a pair of headless horsemen seeking a long driveway, a ghostly monk open to anything with bells, a trio of spirit chimps (we are not sure how they came to be attached to this spirit plane, though a circus accident seems likely, as one would appear to be riding a tiny tricycle), an old lady who is seeking an attic window from which to wave and a grumpy little person who was

poisoned and is asking for a bar to haunt (we are not 100 per cent sure this is a good idea), plus 30-plus dogs, cats and parakeets. There is also one ghostly snapping turtle, but the chances of him actually scaring anyone are rather slim. Ghosts and hosts are to be taxed. A f lat rate of $100 dollars a year for the host, plus each spirit will need to bring in $5,000 annually through ghost-hunters and their entourage’s booking accommodation. Poltergeists will be taxed double,

and pay for all breakages, and will be fined every time a guest is slapped, nipped or inappropriately touched. In addition, each ghost will have to meet a quota of “spooky moments”: at least five recorded “it’s COLD in here, all of a sudden,” mentions, three doors slammed, a dozen heavy footsteps in an empty room and one coffee cup knocked over or hot bath made cold. Those supernatural presences not paying for their keep will be bottled and stored in the freezer in the D’Catur Mansion’s basement until they see the error of their ways. There will, though, be a requirement that those citizens who are not currently haunted will be prepared to open their cellar/attic/widow’s walk to a homeless specter: failure to do so will incur a fine of no less than $45,000. We are currently matching ghosts with citizens: be ready for a knock on the door, and for there to be no one there when you open it, save for a chill gust of wind.

The Answer Lady Wise answers to perplexing questions

T

HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady I’ve had two dates with a guy I really like, and look forward to seeing him again. But, I’m wondering if he might be… well, cheap. Our first date was at the C-View on a Tuesday for $1 tacos. Which is fine — great bar, great tacos. Second date: Washington Inn Wine Bar on a Friday, which is when they have that Five for Friday special, with discounted appetizers and $1 oysters. Again, fine — it was wonderful. But I’m wondering if he’s ever going to take me out to an actual dinner (at an actual table), followed by maybe a movie or a play. Is this guy just really thrifty, or is he a cheapskate? — Dinner, Please Dear Please Oh, dear. The Answer Lady is hoping for your sake that the gentleman in ques-

tion is simply a thrifty one, with a head for finances and a general aversion for throwing money around like a drunken sailor. (Not that drunken sailors aren’t the best dates ever.) There are fewer qualities less appealing in a person than being cheap. It’s important to manage one’s money, but holding onto it with a death grip is somewhat repugnant. But let us not leap to such a conclusion? It’s only been two dates — let us give your new beau the benefit of the doubt.

GARDEN’S owner passed away and she had nowhere else to go but to the shelter. She really misses being in a home and is looking for that perfect companion. Activity Of The Week

C

This week: Celebrating Christmas with a theatrical twist. By Catherine Dugan.

ELEBRATE Christmas with a twist in Cape May this year, with Christmas stories told from a nontraditional point of view. Twists have been essential to Christmas since the beginning — surely, the wise men did not expect that star to lead to a barn. Candy canes are two ribbons of candy twisted together. Christmas crackers are pulled by their twisted ends. Why not tell tales with a twist? Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol tells the tale of Ebenezer Scrooge, who has to be reminded of the meaning of Christmas before he vows to keep the holiday in his heart. But what of Marley, the ghost who sets the story in motion? In Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol, Cape May Stage presents the story from his point of view. If he saves Scrooge’s soul, Marley may save his own, but the “help” of Bogle the imp may get in his way. The story is funny and a little spooky at the same time. Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol by Tom Mula, directed by Ben Ferber, runs November 29 through December 29, Thursdays through Saturdays at 7, Saturdays

See The Santaland Diaries at Congress Hall and Sundays at 3. Tickets are $15 to $35. The show runs for about two hours, and is suitable for ages five and up. Contact (609) 7708311 or capemaystage.com for tickets. East Lynne Theater Company infuses “the American spirit on stage” with a festive touch in Christmas with Harte and O. Henry. Gayle Stahlhuth tells tales of the old West, by nineteenth century authors known for unexpected endings. East Lynne Theater

Company presents its shows in the First Presbyterian Church of Cape May, a building constructed in 1898. In addition to its beauty, the church offers a location across the street from the Merion Inn, which makes pre- or post-theater dining convenient. Tickets are $25, $15 for students, free for ages 12 and under. The show runs November 29 through December 14. Check out the B&B and a Show or Dinner and a Show packages. For more information go to eastlynnetheater.org. For an off-kilter view of the holiday retail frenzy, consider The Santaland Diaries, presented by Cape May Stage at Congress Hall. This hilarious show, “for mature elves only,” skewers Christmas cliches while offering an oddly moving view of the season’s spirit. The Santaland Diaries, by David Sedaris, directed by Roy Steinberg, runs November 30 through December 29. The running time is ninety minutes. The bar will be open before and after the show. Tickets start at $25, and special lunch or dinner and show packages are available. Contact Cape May Stage for tickets and more information. Next week: You’ve Gotta Have Art

Sophomore PAIGE ADAMS, the daughter of Chris and Joleen Adams, is a very involved student both inside and outside of Lower Cape May Regional High School. At LCMR, she is involved with almost every single club in the school. She is president of the sophomore class, and she is currently ranked number two academically. Paige wanted to become president because she really wants to improve school spirit within both her class and the school. Aside from being involved in school, Paige is also a part of a national competition dance team. She has been dancing with Jersey Cape since she was two years old. She loves dancing because of the unity within her team. “We are one big happy family, and I would never leave Jersey Cape for any other dance studio,” said Paige. Paige manages her time between school work, clubs, and dance by trying to complete her homework throughout the day. When she graduates, she would love to attend the University of Florida and cheerlead there. She aspires to major in Spanish, and after completing her degree, she wants to join the FBI and be a translator for them. Story by Kylie Gorbsky / Photograph by Jake Fitzmaurice
