Ofqui, para luego atravesar la laguna y navegar hacia el norte, evitando el peligro de rodear las aguas abiertas en torno a la Península de Taitao, que en forma de cuerno divide en dos el li toral de Aysén. Al sur de Coyhaique, destaca el imponente Cerro Mackay con paredes tallada en forma vertical como un enorme órgano medieval, donde el paso del viento produce sonidos desconcertantes, con cierto nivel de musicalidad. Inmediatamente después del cerro, aparece la Laguna Foitzick, donde los niños aprenden que “no tiene fondo”, probablemente la razón por lo cual no se ven bañistas en este lugar. Poco más al sur, se encuentra la Muralla China, una extraordinaria formación rocosa que a primera vista parece ser esculpida por seres humanos y no por obra de la naturaleza. En este punto está el cruce hacia el centro de ski El Fraile y el camino que lleva a los lagos Frío y Póllux, típicos lagos pampeanos, rodeados de cerros de vegetación escasa, o hacia los lagos Elizalde y La Paloma, lagos andinos, encajonados entre montañas de exuberante vegetación. Continuando el viaje se llega a Balmaceda, el primer poblado fundado oficialmente en Aysén en 1917, donde actualmente se ubica el aeropuerto de la región. Luego del cruce a Balmaceda, el camino se interna hacia el Portezuelo Ibáñez, lugar de impresionantes cerros de caprichosas formas y hermosos colores, que cuando son iluminados por el atardecer, cambian de tonalidades entre naranjo, amarillo y ocre. Este lugar es uno de los más bellos de la región por cuanto cada recodo, riachuelo, cascada o laguna es un mundo de formas y colores propios. Cuando ya es difícil decidirse por cual es el lugar más bello, el camino baja hacia el valle y aparece de improviso el imponente Cerro Castillo, definitivamente la montaña más hermosa de Aysén. Desde el poblado del mismo nombre, es posible visitar pinturas rupestres y apreciar el entorno del Río Ibáñez que se dirige al encuentro del Lago General Carrera. Boats sail from Puerto Ingeniero Ibáñez to Chile Chico, probably the place with the most incredible contrasts in all of Patagonia, a city of peaches and adobe h omes in an environment t hat is overwhelming in its different landscapes.
