Welcome to our technology in education guide No-one disputes the key role that technology can play in education and there is no shortage of great products and technologies available for schools and universities. Spending reached £900m in British schools in 2015 according to Gartner. Today’s students are more tech-savvy than ever having been brought up in a digital age where the blackboard and chalk can only be remembered by the parents. Not surprisingly, they expect technology to play an integral role in their schooling and their teachers to embrace this in their teaching. According to a recent YouGov poll, reported in ITPro, 76% of teachers use some form of technology in all or most of their lessons but still some equipment remains under-utilised due to a lack of training. Resellers can play a role in ensuring that training on the products and technologies they sell is part of the overall proposition, and helping educational establishments when updates and changes occur are also considered. Selling into the public sector can be complex, challenging but full of opportunities, and education is no exception. That’s why, at Exertis, we have an experienced and knowledgeable team ready to help resellers in this specialist marketplace. We can provide you with the support you need to grow your business in the education market. Not just from the wide range of products and solutions that we sell from our market-leading vendor partners and the knowledge we have about their specific schemes in the public sector but also, most importantly, from the services and support we offer through the complete sales cycle. From pre-sales consultancy and technical advice, through to tender support, special bids and promotions, product demonstrations, professional engineering services and post-sales support. We can also help with leasing and credit services. So if you are interested in the educational public sector, talk to the experts at Exertis. We are here to help you. Call us today.

The importance of having the right connections in education Risk or opportunity in education There is no question that today’s classroom has seen a major change in the use of technology. Blackboards, chalks and exercise books have been usurped by a more connected classroom. Students of today want to be connected 100% of the time and with a multitude of devices. Just like the workplace, the trend to bring your own device is just as apparent in education. So should schools embrace that or provide the same devices (1-1) for both teachers and students in the class to use. Many companies recognise the importance and opportunity that BYOD brings in terms of increasing productivity and employee satisfaction by allowing staff to connect their own devices in a safe and secure way. Should this same privilege be extended to schools? It seems either 1-1 or BYOD is a decision that needs to be taken to ensure the students gain the best from technology. There are of course pros and cons to BYOD in schools. While both scenarios require a robust wireless network infrastructure, there is potentially a significant cost saving if the school isn’t supplying the device. That can be upfront as well as long term because with BYOD, the school isn’t investing in upgrades or replacement models. On the other hand, the school is likely to have increased costs in network management. Moreover, putting the onus on the child or student may, like the school uniform debate, demonstrate an inequality, albeit a digital one, that creates a problem. With 1-1, schools don’t have to worry about who has the right device in order to deliver a lesson. The same applies to compatibility of using apps. Since everyone has the same device and on the same platform, schools know whichever app they use will be workable for all students. However, BYOD has the potential to extend the learning beyond the classroom. Students can easily continue their work whenever and wherever they want. This portability offers the potential for increased learning and parental contribution and engagement as well as increasing teacher efficiency. However,

BYOD comes with potential security risks from allowing unmanaged devices connecting to a managed network. There are local area networks and broadband considerations, and power management and recharging issues.

Keeping pace with technology Students need to feel that their school or university is keeping pace with technology and the digital age. In a poll of students conducted by Frog Education and reported in the Huffington Post, nearly two thirds felt that their schools were being left behind by the new technology and consequently not preparing them for the jobs of the future. Perhaps not surprisingly, when students of today have been brought up in this environment, most, some 85%, stated that they knew more about how to use the technology than the teachers. Indeed 73% felt frustrated that the teachers didn’t make use of the technology available to them. Teachers clearly need better support and training if they are to take advantage of technology in the classroom. Educational establishments clearly recognise that embracing technology enhances the learning process. Over the last few years, the educational IT landscape has changed beyond recognition from a few PC’s in a confined location to staff and pupils requiring instant connectivity with a range of devices across the entire school footprint. From interactive whiteboards to individual devices, the classroom has become a connected workplace for teachers and students. Resellers in the educational sector need to ensure that schools and universities maximise their budgets and not only invest in the right product areas but provide better education on how to take advantage of the technology through comprehensive training. Exertis is well placed to support customers in both these areas. Sources and acknowledgements: Education Technology, Daily Telegraph, Huffington Post, securedge networks, EdTech Review

VR a virtual paradise for education Whilst most people equate VR with gaming, there are many opportunities for business applications and not least in education which is likely to be a strong vertical market for this technology. There are some wild predictions about the market and opportunity: Digi-Capital say it could be worth $30bn, Superdata reckon $40bn (£25bn in software and $15bn in hardware) and Citi analyst anticipates the market for hardware, networks, software and content will reach $200bn, all by 2020. As access to some types of mobile VR devices become more affordable for individuals, then consequently it will infiltrate into schools. Children will no doubt be one of the drivers in bringing VR into education as they are used to new technology. Books, pencils, pens and blackboards are being overshadowed by the digital age. Equally, there is a great potential in higher education and universities.

Content is King in enhancing learning As with many vertical applications content will be key to the use of VR. Education and learning is certainly one area where there are endless opportunities. The advantage of VR in this type of environment is that it can take learners into situations they might never be able to access themselves. It can enable large groups of students to interact with each other in a three dimensional environment and present sometimes complex data and scenarios in a fun and interesting way. Virtual Reality and interactive 3D solutions have been shown by some educational analysts to increase students’ attention levels by 92% and test scores by 35%. Whatever the percentage may be, it certainly has the chance to create greater engagement between students and teachers.

collaborate and communicate with other students based in different locations.

A hard act to follow There are of course two sides to VR, software content development and hardware. The emergence of more affordable head-mounted displays (HDMs) and a host of big name players battling for supremacy in the market. Facebook with Oculus Rift, Microsoft Hololens, Samsung Gear, HTC Vive, Google and Sony will drive the market. According to Gartner about 140,000 HDMs were sold last year but the analyst expects this to increase to 1.43 million units in 2016 and 6.31 million in 2017. There will be some financial concerns and barriers for education, not just with HDMs but also the requirements to upgrade PC hardware to be capable of running VR applications. NVidia, a leading graphics card manufacturer estimated that less than 1% of the 1.43 billion PCs expected to be in use in 2016, according to Gartner, are VR ready. The cards themselves will not be inexpensive, at least initially, and that along with other enhancements may be a reason VR doesn’t quite become mainstream in education just yet. However, Exertis is poised to help its vendors bring VR to market and its resellers to seize on the opportunity in both the consumer and business sectors. Sources and acknowledgements: Gartner, enoreality, techcrunch, insights, NVidia

Much of the early content for VR based learning has focused on the sciences: biology, astronomy, geology and medicine, and that’s understandable as learning can be enriched through interaction with dimensional objects and environments. However, there are numerous companies entering this space dedicated to providing schools with packaged educational curriculum and content, teacher learning and technological tools to support VR-based instruction in the classroom. Indeed, VR has the potential to dramatically change the way some subjects are taught at school or university as well as experiences outside the classroom. Not every school or parent can fund a school trip to the countryside or a foreign destination. VR has the potential to provide a spectacular alternative with a virtual visit to the Amazon rainforest; the Egyptian pyramids; a tour of an art gallery, museum or city; a trip in space or perhaps the ability to simulate a surgical procedure for a medical student. Not just seeing or hearing but also the chance to experience the activities they are learning about in a fully immersive environment and to Altham 01282 776776
