e’ve been bringing you information packed publications for almost 20 years now and have enjoyed every minute of it. We are excited to bring you our newest feature, this Continuing Education Guide! If you’re not reading this in a hard copy version, this publication can be picked up free at community colleges throughout Southern California. Our goal is to introduce students and working professionals to the many opportunities available through their own and neighboring institutions extended resources. We write about programs offered through UC Extension, CSU Continuing Education, private university programs, and community colleges. And, we also introduce you to some of the most prestigious university programs in the country that offer online classes as well as certificate and degree programs. The CSU system offers OPEN University, provides for attendance in desired college courses, sometimes with credit received, without pursuing college admission. Finally, many universities offer OpenCourseWare, where you can watch professor’s classes online — usually for free! There are many opportunities we’re sure you’re not aware of, and we want to help you explore and find your best options! Financing continuing education is very attainable. Working professionals should ask their company about tuition reimbursement policies. You may be surprised just how much is allotted for a certificate or degree! Student loans usually cover most degree programs. Also, US Veterans can use their Post 9-11 GI Bill for many certificate and degree programs. Active US Military and spouses should look into Military Tuition Assistance applicable for degree and certificates programs — both in the classroom and online. Most colleges and universities will offer a Veterans Resource Center on campus that can help assist active and reserve military, veterans and dependents achieve their college admission goals. As you might know, U.S. News and World Report just released its 2016 Best College Rankings. Several of the colleges we feature in this guide were recognized with top honors. Congrats California! We’re extremely proud to be in the heart of some amazing education!

CORPORATE TUITION REIMBURSEMENT U.S. News and World Report published in early 2015 that over 50 percent of employers offered some sort of tuition assistance. Employer reimbursement amounts and policies vary, but unlike student loans, which may require you attend school at least half time to receive funds, corporate tuition assistance may come with more lenient requirements. Employer guidelines dictate the amount of assistance, the qualifying programs and the timing of the fund availability. Some employers will offer certificate and continuing education courses in-house and you may never see the bill. Whether you score $25,000 reimbursement for your MBA program or $3,000 for certificate classes, look closely at the courses you’re taking and the increased value of your performance. Even if you have to front the remainder of the program costs out-of-pocket when you exceed your employers reimbursement limit, your increased marketability and new skill sets may help you land a higher salary in the near future.

OPENCOURSEWARE Many universities offer audio, video and text files for the general public to watch - usually for free. You won’t earn a degree through OpenCourseWare, but you can watch law classes from Duke University,

Boston University Metropolitan College

study Shakespeare at Oxford University, or explore the extensive classes offered through MIT.
