Why Africa? A better question, perhaps is “why not?”. The inclusion of world music is a state standard, and Ms. Winslow had already programmed a few pieces when students independently suggested doing a version of Toto’s “Africa” they had seen on YouTube and doing Lion King for the Spring Concert. Instead of doing Disney music from The Lion King, we have prepared music straight from the source. It has been quite the experience for some students as we have studied music of many countries and regions on the great continent of Africa. Outside in the commons, you’ll see the “glogs” that the junior high choir students have prepared with information about the different countries represented. Scan the QR code with a smartphone to view them online or visit http://www.mccbandandchoir.org/Africa/WebQuest/main.html.

Jazz Band After fundraising for months and selling lots of t-shirts, the MCC Jazz Band participated in the Morris Jazz Fest at the University of Minnesota, Morris on April 13th-14th. After leaving early Friday morning and spending over three hours on the road, the group spent the afternoon listening to a few other jazz bands and attended the evening concert featuring the UMM jazz ensembles and some worldrenowned professional musicians. The next morning, the MCC Jazz Band performed and spent an with the professionals. The trip concluded with lunch and a tour of Morris with the jazz band students from Brooklyn Center High School. It was eye-opening for our students, and they had an incredible experience. To learn more, view our video at http://www.youtube.com/ user/MCCBandandChoir or scan the QR code with a smartphone. Special thanks to Jerry Hesse for donating his time and driving the bus!
