THE HIVE SITE SURVEY In the mid 1800’s the Fleetwood, Preston and West Riding Junction railway was established. Its ambition was to link Lancashire and Yorkshire through the means of a train line. The link would transport cattle, stone from quarries and other supplies as well as pupils to and from the beautiful Yorkshire spa towns, such as Harrogate and Knaresborough. The Miley Tunnel was constructed to accommodate this line and runs directly under a large portion of Preston.
LOCATION: PRESTON POSTCODE: PR1 WARD: UNIVERSITY WARD LANDOWNER: NATIONAL RAIL 01.
The Miley Tunnel closed in 1980 because of lack of use due to new transport links making the tunnel disused for many years and a recreational spot for the youth in the area, as well as homeless people. The Tunnel is approximately 1.5km long and offers expansive open areas at each end. The site cuts directly through the University Campus and offers a unique link to the train station. There are approximately 4500 residences for individuals in university operated halls of residence. Via private landlords there are a further 3800 bedrooms available approximately. These are usually not in a close proximity to the university campus meaning further travel time. This makes a total of approximately 8300 rooms available per academic year for students to live within proximity to the University of Central Lancashire’s urban campus. With the enrolment of up to 32,000 students per year the lack of student housing is a growing challenge.
With the expansion of the University and its accolade as one of the United Kingdom’s top modern Universities this challenge is expected to continue and will have a direct effect on the university and its students. The University has an annual turnover of £180 million and this looks to rise in the years to come. Studies show that the University of Central Lancashire contributes in the region of £300 million to the local economy. Preston, therefor, is dependent upon the university which, in turn, is reliant upon the students and their success.
