MIND ~ BODY ~ SOUL promoting positive health and wellbeing for women of all ages People take different roads seeking fulfilment and happiness, just because they are not in your road does not mean they are lost. H Jackson Brown

Mental contents are those items which are thought of as being "in" the mind, and capable of being formed and manipulated by mental processes and faculties. Examples include thoughts, concepts, memories, emotions, percepts and intentions.

With regard to living things, a body is the physical body of an individual. "Body" often is used in connection with appearance, health issues and death. It can be simply described as the most complicated machine.

SOUL In certain spiritual, philosophical, and psychological traditions, the soul is the essence of a person, living thing or object. The terms 'soul' and 'spirit' are sometimes used interchangeably; soul denotes a more worldly and less transcendent aspect of a person.

Feeling the Burn! As we all know, stress is at the root of many health problems. Stress and anxiety can cause a type of exhaustion known as 'burnout', which is more than just tiredness. People who suffer this have used up all their adrenal energy leaving them prone to depression and the onset of other diseases. It's important to handle stress before it gets too much. The aim of EVE Wellbeing is to encourage relaxation wherever possible; a holiday is often seen as the ultimate way to relax, but often we do not have the time or

finances to be able to jet off to the other side of the world for a bit of rest in the sunshine. With hectic lifestyles, families and pressures at work, we don't give ourselves a chance to recharge. Make sure to take a little time for yourself; often when we're working hard, we're tensed and tightened up and not breathing properly. An instant way to relax is to take a few deep breaths which will help you slow down and allow much needed oxygen into your system.

We need to discover what makes us happy, it may be a massage, a beauty treatment, exercise and fitness, meditation or hobbies. Try to give yourself at least a couple of hours each week to do something just for you. You will find lots of ways to rest and recharge within the pages of this publication.

Why not let us know how you get on? For more information about EVE Wellbeing, like us on Facebook, follow us on twitter @evewellbeing or become a member - see back page for full details.

Real Clothes for Real Women! Charlotte Jackson is delighted to announce the launch of an exciting new range of women's clothing and sportswear in sizes 16 to 24. Designed to flatter the more curvaceous woman, our range consists of styles cut to fit the fuller figure. With a selection of pretty pink tops and soft grey yoga pants we design real clothes for real women - clothes that fit, flatter and give you confidence. For us, fit matters, size doesn't. We believe in inclusion, not exclusion, and so provide all our clothes in larger sizes. Our cotton tees, pants and zipped hoodies are super soft and comfortable making them perfect for yoga, walking or working out at the gym. Beautifully stretchy yoga trousers with loose relaxed fit have ruched waistbands and can be worn higher on the waist, lower covering hips or any way you like! Our wonderfully soft curvy tee is pretty in pink and both loose and fitted in all the right places. Helen Crossland founded Charlotte Jackson following her own frustrating experiences trying to find stylish gym wear to fit her. Helen designed the range

herself and says: “I was once a size 28 and couldn't find any nice gym wear. They tend to be boxy so make you look bigger, or are just the normal sizes graded up I found them tight, short and not very flattering. I decided to create a range of gym clothes to flatter your figure and give you confidence!” Our initial collection is made up of fitness clothing and gym wear and we aim to extend our collection later this year by also creating great fitting, quality daywear.

Our collection is available online - take a look at:

Karen Betts and her talented team have just changed the life of a very special lady. Lynn Daniel was diagnosed with breast cancer just two days after completing the Jane Tomlinson 10k run. So, how can you help to clear your mind and free it from all the clutter and constant chatter?

Nurturing your Mind Have you noticed that if you're busy or stressed you forget things or are clumsy or make mistakes? It's because your mind is too cluttered. It's like when your office or house is in a mess, you can't find things easily. So, you clear your office/house and things are back in order. But do you clear your mind and give it space? Probably not, or if you do it's probably not often enough.

Can you find 10-20 minutes in your day to stop, put your feet up, sit quietly, listen to some relaxing music, have a bath, do some gardening, meditate, do some yoga or gentle stretching, sit quietly in the garden with a cuppa, or go for a walk. Anything to stop the chatter in your mind. To quieten your mind. To give your mind space and freedom. When you do this, your mind focuses just on that one activity. You go inside and feel at peace and quiet. You may think, 'there's no way I can find 10-20 minutes a day for myself, there's just too much to do'. But you have 1440 minutes in every day. If you spend 8 hours asleep, and give yourself just 20 minutes a day for some peace and quiet, you'll still have 940 minutes every day to care for everyone else and do

your jobs. So can you really not find 10-20 minutes a day just for you? The longer-term benefits of giving yourself quiet time every day are huge and it will make a really big difference to how you cope with your daily life. Investing in yourself is the best investment you can make, because as well as benefitting you, it will also benefit those around you because you will feel calmer and less stressed, and so your relationships with your family and friends will be much better. So, help yourself and others by nurturing your mind and caring for it gently and lovingly. Start today and see the difference it makes!

positive thinking making it work for you At Halo Personnel, our role is to assist high-calibre individuals, either employed or unemployed, in making a career move that is right for them. We match their requirements as an employee to employers whom we feel they are most suited, companies with a like-minded attitude and ethos. We firmly believe that a positive attitude whilst in the workplace can really make a difference to how you perform and to how you are perceived by your colleagues and piers, thus helping to climb the ladder and become an integral part of your organisation. For example, if something at work doesn't go as planned, or a project doesn't reach the expectations you intended, it is the belief that this problem can in fact be solved, the belief that this situation - and almost everything in life - is momentary that helps positive thinkers concentrate on solutions rather than the problem itself. Positive thinking, however, does not come naturally to all of us, and some may find they have to 'train' themselves to be more optimistic, to make being positive more of a habitual exercise. There are several techniques you can try to help you change the way you see your job, such as writing down the positives about being at work and concentrating on these as 'reasons to go to work', rather than wishing you weren't there.

For example: 1) It gives me an opportunity to leave home and see different scenes 2) It allows me to have a different lunch every day without having to cook 3) It makes me appreciate my time off work and thus use this time more wisely 4) I spend time with a diverse mix of people with different thoughts and ideas to inspire me Sometimes, there may be issues with work colleagues, rather than the job itself, and in these cases it is important to remember that we cannot always relate to everyone around us, but by spending our time listening to, and being around, positive people it can really make a difference in the way we ourselves behave and feel. Go with your intuition and your observations on those people who always have a smile; who talk about possibilities; and who show a zest for life. Po s i t i v e a t t i t u d e s a r e contagious. Relate daily to uplifting colleagues, and you will see your positive attitude heighten as well.

Whether you're looking for work or for professional help with your next recruitment drive, halo personnel adopt the same attitude we aim to please.

stand out the halo way

The Voice Throughout my life for as far as I remember A wee small voice has accompanied me At times it would rise to the surface For the sake of the protection of others often it was hushed and spoke to me of its great wisdom Many times it came out squeaky, as if afraid to give voice to the thoughts it was pursuing It would burst out in song, never quite hitting the right notes But eventually it soared with my spirit and lifted me Finally, at last I have given it wings so that my voice may be heard No more will it be silenced Because once set free it is limitless, insatiable and unstoppable Let my voice now pour and gush like a stream gathering momentum as it flows to the river and on to the sea. Take control of your destiny With recession, early retirement, and redundancy still rebounding around our economy, many people are taking control of their destiny and starting out in business for themselves, and whilst they are passionate about what they want to do, the knowledge they need to make that business a success can very often be lacking. Here's where self employment expert Kay Gill of Red Shoes Coaching comes to the rescue. A true entrepreneur, Kay has been in business for more than 30 years, during which time she has experienced the pleasures and pitfalls of the balancing act needed to succeed. Now, as a qualified, experienced Personal and Business Coach, she helps other newly self employed

people cut through the overwhelm they face in the first year of business. Kay says "I love the passion I see coming from new entrepreneurs, but I also notice the paralysis that c a n s e t i n t h r o u g h f e a r, overwhelm, or through expecting perfection in everything they do. My knowledge base covers all aspects of running your business, from social media, up to date advertising and marketing to what I call 'the techy stuff for the not so techy inclined" And with so many new solopreneurs setting up their business on a shoe string, I can show them numerous ways of getting their business off the ground with virtually no outlay! "Also, I address what I consider the fundamental starting point for success and that is developing

Dance for fitness and for fun! The Dancebox dance studio opened in June 2010, on McLintock Way (off Summer Lane) in Barnsley. It is the only professional dance studio in the borough, and ultimately aims to be the 'Pineapple Dance Studios' of the neighbourhood Owned by professional dancer, Laura Amy White, 24, from Carlton, The Dancebox was opened to take regular classes after Laura had completed a degree at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance. “As a professional dancer it's vital to keep up your training, but I didn't have the time or money to travel to Leeds and beyond to find a good class to push me technically,” explains Laura. Having set up adult classes a few of years ago in ballet, contemporary dance, and street dance, Laura began to receive requests to teach children, and decided to open a venue that would be able to offer exciting drop-in dance classes for all. The Dancebox offers classes, private lessons, workshops, half-term activities, and unique dance parties for both adults and children - all taught by talented professional dancers and with 'up-to-date moves' brought to you by leading dance artists. Laura, who danced with 'Britain's Got Talent' winners, Diversity, in London for the Sky1 reality show, 'Got to dance' in December 2009,

is excited that the media is making more people want to dance. “Dance is forever developing, and with shows like 'Britain's Got Talent' and 'So You Think You Can Dance', the dance world is an exciting place to be. People are pushing more boundaries and The Dancebox is the place to do this in Barnsley. “I want people who have never danced before to feel comfortable - to come along and have a go. You don't need to be 'flexible' or 'slim' - people often worry that they can't join in, but dance is all about having fun, learning something new, and enjoying yourself!” Also keen to nurture individuals in pursuit of a career in dance, professional dancers - and visiting professional dancers from across the country - can push talented individuals, and provide professional level training. The studio's industry contacts also enable patrons to access auditions for top schools, shows, music videos, and TV commercials as well as bringing the hottest dance moves to the people of Barnsley. “We're often led to believe that London is the place to be when it comes to dance, but I believe more exciting and innovative dance is now happening up north! I believe that we have the potential to put our town on the dance map!” Unique to Barnsley as a place to come along and join a class when you have some free time, The

Dancebox's friendly atmosphere - combined with its offer of the highest standard of taught dance classes makes the studio a buzzing hive of creative dance activity. Please join The Dancebox Facebook group and/or like the page to hear the latest studio news, view the timetable, and receive fantastic studio offers. A breath of fresh air for asthma and arthritis A unique 'oxygen therapy' machine, installed at greens gym Sheffield, has been found to help successes of asthma and arthritis. Users sit in a reclining leather chair and breathe through a mask, which regulates their oxygen intake and trains their body to run more efficiently with less oxygen. The 'pod' is used by physios and GP's across the country and is unique in the respect that it adapts to every individual to push them as hard as they can go. Dr Maurice Mann, a GP who uses the pod in Sheffield said, "Anything that improves the way people breathe is going to open a lot of doors. People with arthritis, in particular, need to exercise regularly but find it hard to do so. Using this machine will not result in the same pain and side-effects after exercise, and so is very beneficial." Christine Rukin, 60, has had arthritis for eight years and had

to stop playing golf because of the pain and inflammation after a round. She said "I've struggled with arthritis for a long time and it's stopped me living the life I'd like, but now I'm back playing golf and feel better than I have for years." A Treat for your Feet What is reflexology? Whilst the art of reflexology dates back to Ancient Egypt, India and China, it wasn't until 1913 that Dr William Fitzgerald introduced this therapy to the West as 'zone therapy'. He noted that reflex areas on the feet and hands were linked to other areas and organs of the body within the same zone. In the 1930's Eunice Ingham further developed this zone theory into what is now known as reflexology. She observed that congestion or tension in any part of the foot is mirrored in the corresponding part of the body.

Reflexology is a complementary therapy, which works on the feet to help heal the whole person not just the prevailing symptoms.

How can reflexology help me? Reflexologists do not claim to cure, diagnose or prescribe. Reflexology may be used to help restore and maintain the body's natural equilibrium. This gentle therapy encourages the body to work naturally to restore its own healthy balance. Reflexology may help with the following:Back Pain Migraine Fertility Issues Muscular & Joint Pain Sleep disorders Sports injuries Hormonal imbalances Digestive disorders Stress-related conditions Clients living with Cancer Clients living with disabling neurological conditions

How to fit in your recommended daily 30 minutes of exercise By now, most people know about the benefits of being fit and active; however, a common barrier is often time, with people struggling to fit exercise into their busy weekly schedule. Although the government recommends being moderately active for at least 30 minutes on at least five days of the week, a trip to the gym can easily turn into an hour or so out of your day. To make the 30 minute goal more achievable you can break it down into smaller chunks. You might start out with three lots of ten minute blocks; eventually taking that to two lots of 15 minute blocks; and one day being able to do it in a full 30 minute block. There are four main types of exercise and you should aim to fit in all four during the week. These are: Cardiovascular Strength Flexibility Balance Cardiovascular This is any repetitive rhythmic movement involving a large muscle group. You can meet your 30 minute target by: Getting of the bus a stop earlier Parking your car at the furthest point away from the entrance Walking the dogs (sounds silly, but I have had people look shocked when I suggested this one!) Walking the kids to school Walking to work Mowing the lawn or raking leaves Hoovering Dusting Kicking a ball around with the kids My favourite one was a lady who took each item of clothing straight up the stairs to the wardrobe after ironing each piece!!!

download a free nutrition and exercise plan at Strength By making your muscles work harder, they get stronger! You can make your muscles work harder by: Doing free weights at home Taking the stairs rather than lifts or escalators Walking up the stairs two at a time Carrying the shopping bags rather than using a trolley Attending a circuit class Washing the car Weeding Flexibility This is the range of movement at each of your joints. To improve your flexibility you can try a yoga, pilates or tai chi class. These classes really help your flexibility and posture and can be great to help you relax at the end of the day. Another great tip is to incorporate being active into your social life. If you usually meet friends in the pub, why not suggest a pilates class instead. Its much more fun with a group of friends! Balance Balance and flexibility are so important for maintaining independence as we get older. The more you challenge your balance, the

better it will improve. Try brushing your teeth standing on one leg and swapping half way through. You all (hopefully) brush your teeth twice a day and you will soon find that you do not need to hang on to the side of the basin as you brush! Try making your 30 minutes fun, that way you are more likely to look forward to it and it will seem less like a chore. Involve friends, go dancing, play with the kids. If you find going to the gym boring, don't go!! You are much more likely to stick to something you enjoy and see the benefits quicker. You will be surprised at how easily you can achieve these goals by making a few changes to your usual routine. Remember, 'Every Little Helps!' If you need personalised advice on how to fit more exercise into your routine please feel free to get in touch.

Nurturing your Body They say your body is your temple, but do you treat it like a temple? Or do you take it for granted and not really look after it, and then are surprised when you become unwell or sick?

Usually when we are ill, it's because we've not been looking after ourselves and our body - maybe we've been too busy at work or home and we get run down and pick up a cold. Or we may feel tired and sluggish because we've not been eating healthily or haven't done any exercise recently. If you nurture your body from the inside and out by

eating well, drinking plenty of water, exercising regularly, having enough sleep and resting and relaxing your mind, it will repay you by looking and feeling vibrant and healthy. You'll have more energy and will feel well and have fewer illnesses. So, find time to nurture your body and treat it like a temple and you'll see

Exercises can be performed either seated or standing. I've been involved with Tai Chi since 1991, and teaching since 2000. I am registered and insured through the BCCMA (British Council for Chinese Martial Art) and I am an Advanced Instructor with the Tai Chi Union for Great Britain. I run two classes every Wednesday at The Hub, Riley Lane, Kirkburton, Huddersfield, HD8 0RZ. The 10am class incorporates simple flowing exercises to relax, yet invigorate - easy to learn and practice. The 11am class will teach a slow, graceful sequence of flowing movements call 'the Tai Chi form'. Cost; £4 per class or £6 for both. Why not try an exercise system that everyone can participate in and benefit from? I run various daytime and evening classes throughout the Huddersfield area. Part of feeling happy and positive is the need to feel Sexy, Dazzlingly Beautiful and Desirable. We all want to feel beautiful and special. Just think how it makes you feel when you are looking stunning. Boudoir photography is a perfect way to do just that - a terrific chance to dress up and feel glamorous! You could try pole dancing or burlesque classes or if you're not feeling that daring, grab your partner or a group of friends and watch some professional burlesque for a night of risque fun and frolics.

Why not give pole fitness a whirl? Pole Fitness itself is a sport and a skill. It incorporates both gymnastics and modern dance as well and strength, flexibility and confidence. Exotic dance is what some people think when they hear about pole dancing, but it has since evolved from something performed in strip clubs to a form of art, it is now a recognised form of exercise. Pole dancing is an aerobic workout, for both strength and toning. Participants can expect toning from head to toe and an increase in muscle definition all over, especially in the arms, stomach and thighs. For those who are interested in statistics, a good session can burn up to 400 calories per hour, that’s two Mars Bars! It helps by increasing flexibility, improving your posture and overall fitness,

whilst enjoying fun dance moves, and all without wondering what you look like. The good news is that you don’t need to be extremely fit or flexible when you first start as you can gradually build up your skills, strength and flexibility. It is suitable for any figure, of any age or any fitness level. The feedback we have received particularly from those who have never tried it before - is that it is an enjoyable way of keeping fit and burning calories. So why not give pole fitness a whirl. We also do aerial hoop classes. Aerial Hoop (also known as Lyra or Cerceau) is a large steel hoop suspended from the ceiling on which you can perform aerial acrobatics! Venues in Barnsley and Huddersfield!

Discover a 'real you' behind the Masque

In the heart of Yorkshire, Masque Photography is at the fore-front of this new and exciting genre of photography - with a huge emphasis on having a fabulous experience, as well as the achievement of amazing photographs at the end of it. Each woman has her hair a n d m a k e - o v e r professionally styled, and is guaranteed to feel a million dollars before the moment arrives to get infront of the camera. Lets face-it, it takes some courage to pose in your lingerie in front of someone you've never met.

What's great about Masque Photography is that Helen the photographer is fantastic at putting you at ease with her easy-going, unpretentious attitude; and after a few shots it's hard not to start really enjoying yourself. It's the feeling of doing something you didn't think you'd dare to do that makes it such an empowering experience feeling the fear, and doing it anyway... not that there is anything to be scared of! The three or four hours in the studio won't seem enough once you've got into it, and you'll definitely find yourself wanting to come back for more!

It's a transformation that begins with a glamorous make-over, and concludes with some rather impressive photographs that you just can't resist showing everyone!

Artography Fantasy Portraits Artography is the process of transforming a photograph into a handpainted world of dreams! Using your image and my imagination we can create your 'alter ego' or fantasy vision. The process begins with a consultation where the fantasy is created! Using an eclectic mix of themes, styles and ideas, we can create the perfect image. The original photograph can be a snapshot or a studio shot, where costumes and props can be used to achieve the perfect pose.

The only limitation is imagination

The photograph is then digitally manipulated and printed onto canvas, or watercolour paper, and the magical process begins. Taking inspiration from many sources, I will hand paint your fantasy image, from fairies, angels and mermaids to witches, vampires and devils, adding magical elements such as dragons and unicorns -the possibilities are endless and the final piece totally unique to you...

WHAT IS COLOUR THERAPY? From the moment we are born we are surrounded and influenced by colour; it is impossible to be indifferent towards colour.

Heal just by listening! This first album "Pure Chakra" by Belightful Music works to align the chakras while you just sit and listen! Relax to the belightful vocals based on the bija mantras accompanied by soft tones and piano resonating with each chakra in turn.

It influences everything we eat, drink, touch and see. It affects our moods and emotions and colours our personality. We use colour to describe emotions and feelings - for example: having the Blues, Green with envy, seeing Red, a Golden opportunity. By becoming aware of the effect colour has on us, we can harness their powers and bring brightness into our lives. It is a dynamic energy in its own right and has been used as a therapeutic tool for thousands of years, particularly during the reign of the Pharaohs in Egypt.

Boudoir photography is fast-becoming a must-do experience for woman who like to treat themselves to a good old-fashioned confidence-boost. Think Gok Wan's popular How to Look Good Naked programme and you'll get the gist.

WAYS TO HEAL WITH COLOUR We use colour to heal the Chakras. These are the seven major energy centres within the body, which draw energy from the universe to keep our psyche well balanced. Chakra is a Hindi term for 'spinning wheel' and

they are thought to be a kind of vortex channelling energy to maintain a balance essential to human wellbeing. When these energy centres are working correctly, i.e. spinning at the correct speed or frequency, we feel emotionally safe and happy. However, when one or more of the Chakras fails to function as it should, essential parts of our psyche shut down and it is then that we experience emotions such as anxiety, terror, isolation, anger and loneliness - all symptoms associated with stress and depression. The reason colour helps to heal the emotional problems associated with the Chakras, is because the colours resonate at the same frequency as each of the Chakras spin; using the colour reminds the body how it should function effectively. With this knowledge we can begin to understand that often illness and pain are not simply physical, but can be traced back to an emotional problem due to one of the Chakras functioning incorrectly. Colour can be used to lift your mood, heal physical problems and even help your business.

'Take your guests on a Fragrant Journey…' Aromatherapy Events & Parties Scented Events was created by Jo Ribeiro, who decided it would be fun to combine her two careers so far as an Event Organiser and an Aromatherapist and create Aromatherapy Events for people to enjoy! These have proved popular with both the corporate world of female entertainment and for hen and birthday parties. The Scented Events team teach the group about natural oils; what they are, where they are found, and how they work with the systems of the body and mind to create a state of balance and harmony. Generally, we bring along about 12 different oils. Guests will learn about commonly used oils such as lavender and rose, and also about other oils that are not so well known such as frankincense and bergamot. For example, frankincense is commonly used in skincare as it is very hydrating to the skin, helping to prevent wrinkles. It also has an affinity with the chest, helping to ease coughs and

infections. Lavender has many uses, and is a very useful oil for the immune system and also for helping the mind to unwind at bedtime and promote sleep. Guests then get the chance to fragrance their own natural beauty products, such as shower gel and hand cream, with their own unique choice of oils, with h e l p f r o m o u r knowledgeable staff. The great thing is that guests can see what oils can help them, as well as which fragrances they enjoy, be it for relaxing, for energising or for helping a wide range of conditions that natural oils are so beneficial for. The evenings are fun and

informative and certainly unique! We also hire out our popular 'Scent Bar' as an attraction at parties, exhibitions and events. We were proud 'joint-winners of best Stand Activity' at the big Confex Exhibition in Earls Court this year! We love what we do and helping to spread the word about how wonderful Aromatherapy is, especially as there is such a growing interest in using natural products on the skin, in preference to synthetic chemicals. Think back to when you were a child - what did you like to do? Maybe it was singing or playing an instrument, or doing some sport, or dancing. Do you still do those things? Think now about what you love doing - really love doing. You know, when the time flies, when you have no cares in the world. How much time do you spend doing those things?

Maybe there's something that you've always fancied doing, such as, painting, learning to play the piano, drama, a new hobby, whatever is it is, why not start now and start to nourish your soul. Try and build some of the things that make you really happy into your life and see how good you feel. Feel it nourishing your soul! Your soul is the real you. Notice how your mind and soul sing and how wonderful you feel when you do things that nurture your soul. It's so important to feed your soul. This way it will make you feel so much happier and you'll be a joy to be around. Maxine Stead, owner of

What is Reiki? Reiki literally means Universal Life Force and its foundation is accredited to Mikao Usui (1865-1926), a Tendai Buddhist. It is a way of working with and channelling universal energy in order to bring about increased energy levels and healing. In other systems, this energy is also referred to as Chi or prana. A Reiki practitioner connects with and channels this universal energy and transfers it through their hands to the person, animal or object which they are working on. Anyone can gain benefit from a Reiki treatment and anyone can learn how to tap into this wonderful, loving and healing energy. Mikao Usui was a Tendai Buddhist and had dedicated his life to the study of healing and self development. It is reported that after a 21-day period of fasting and meditating on the top of Mount Kurama near Kyoto Usui saw the symbols which we currently use in attunements and healing. However, we need to acknowledge that Reiki is not something new and conceived solely during Usui’s visit to Mount Kurama. It has its roots in lots of existing Oriental traditions that had been around for centuries. It draws on Martial arts and energy cultivation techniques, and Usui was well practiced in these. It also draws on Teate, an ancient tradition of Japanese Palm Healing. It uses attunements similar to those used in Tendai Buddhism – a Japanese form of Buddhism. Reiki also involves ways of controlling the energy that come from Shintoism, the religion of Japan. What is clear is that Usui’s enlightened experience on Mount Kurama contributed to the development of Reiki. His teachings and developments have made it possible to become an adept and competent Reiki practitioner simply and easily – by being attuned to channel the energies and by dedicating part of our daily routine to practicing Reiki. At the heart of Usui Reiki are the Reiki Precepts or Reiki Principles. They are a set of ‘rules to live by’ that were an important part of the system taught by Mikao Usui. As you research Reiki for yourself you will see different variations and translations of this. However this is one which I follow :

Just for today, I will not worry Just for today, I will not be angry Just for today, I will give thanks for my many blessings Just for today, I will do my work honestly Just for today, I will be kind to every living thing

Herbal medicine is the oldest form of known medicine - its history and traditions can be traced back to ancient times. For centuries, plant medicine has played a vital part in the health care of many cultures; our ancestors – through the process of trial and error – were able to discover the most effective local plants to heal their illnesses. People have always relied on plants for food to nourish and sustain the body, and herbal medicine can be seen in much the same way. And now, with the advancement of science enabling us to identify the chemical constituents within these plants, we can better understand their healing powers. The practice of western herbal medicine is predominantly based on the traditional uses of herbs which are native to the UK and Europe; although, the use of other beneficial plants from around the world is not uncommon. The practice is, however, becoming increasingly popular, with many people turning to it as a safe, gentle, and natural modality to use in their healthcare. Why implement the use of herbal medicine in your life? • It has been used for centuries to benefit people’s health • It is a form of medicine provided by nature; helping your body to heal and support itself

• It is unique just to you; composed by a medical herbalist to suit your individual needs • It is the way forward to a naturally healthy life How is a Western Medical Herbalist trained to help you? • They use plants’ natural properties to deal with various human ailments and help the body to improve and maintain a healthy condition • They apply orthodox diagnostic techniques to understand the cause and treatment of disease • They treat every individual as a unique and subtle human being • They take a multifaceted approach to health care; aiming to heal the underlying cause and to increase the body's natural resistance and vitality Western Medical Herbalists are often consulted about issues in following areas: • Immunity • Allergy • Autoimmune conditions • Energy and stamina • Fatigue syndromes • Emotional health • Hormonal health • Fertility • Male/Female sexual and reproductive health • Digestion • Nutrition & nourishment

I have been inspired by Doreen Virtue and her wonderful little books 'Earth Angels' and 'Realms of the Earth Angels' to write a free report 'Calling all Earth Angels' which is available from my website k This goes into depth on the different realms you could be from, with guidance and tips and ways to connect with other Earth Angels.

Protect your energy by imagining and intending a bubble of light and protection. You can also ask Archangel Michael, your Angels or God for help. Spend time in nature It is essential to spend time outdoors in nature regularly, regardless of the weather, as this helps to ground yourself and recharge your energies. The Well for Wellbeing The Well for Wellbeing was launched in July 2010 at The Core in Barnsley town centre by renowned local author Milly Johnson. This pioneering initiative for cancer patients will provide a package of six free beauty and complementary therapies for both men and women from Barnsley who are being treated for cancer, no matter where they are being treated. The Well is to be used for delivering the therapies and can also be used for group classes and patient support groups. There are three confidential treatment areas, a reception, and a comfortable waiting area. Complementary therapies will include oriental massage, reiki, and beauty therapies, including brow

and lash enhancements and a tailor-made service to teach people how to tie scarves and fit hats and wigs. The Well will also offer advice on how to look after your scalp and hair during and after treatment for cancer. Diane Turner, Lead Cancer Manager at Barnsley Hospital, said “It’s not easy to introduce something as i n n o v a t i v e a s complementary therapy into an acute setting, but when a patient says “thank you for the great treatment – you have made me feel like the Queen” a clinician knows that the efforts have been worthwhile.”

If you would like to take advantage of the services available at The Well, or would like more information, contact 01226 433978.

Victims Champion Barnsley Council has a new role in the Community Services. The role is to offer support to victims and witnesses of anti-social behaviour. A study, and information from the Home Office, shows that victims and witnesses of anti social behaviour would benefit with a single point of contact (SPOC) within the local authority when they need support. When Victims and Witnesses have the appropriate support, they feel safer; know that they are not alone or isolated and if they attend court, give their best evidence. Whether they are victims of anti-social behaviour directed against them specifically, or residents who witness anti-social behaviour directed against the community, they are crucial to successful prosecutions against perpetrators. Victims and Witnesses need to be supported the whole length of the witness pathway, from report to trial, remedy and beyond. The Support Officer will offer a bespoke service which will include signposting to partner agencies and voluntary groups, providing one to one support to the most serious cases and vulnerable members of our community and providing support before, during, and after a court case. In addition, personal alarms, door and window security, life line alarms and smoke detector life lines are available. The aim is to have a cleaner, safer Barnsley where people can live and work in their community without fear of anti social behaviour. The only way forward in reducing anti-social behaviour is by witnesses coming forward and voicing their concerns. If you require support or assistance as a result of anti social behaviour, contact 01226 787899 Your call will be dealt with in the Strictest of confidence.

Grandma Abson's Traditional Baking Can you remember cakes and puddings like Grandma used to make? They certainly knew best about so many things. Scrumptious cakes, succulent puddings, and tasty biscuits were highly prized in Edwardian times, when Lizzie Abson honed her skills as a cookhousekeeper in service. Her cooking continued to delight throughout her long life as wife, mother, and grandmother; the doyenne of baking in her local community. Now, Meryl White has captured her Grandma's recipes in Grandma Abson's Traditional Baking - a handbook of useful and practical recipes for all sorts of baking - offering 190 traditional recipes to baking devotees, from intriguing memories to culinary nostalgics, with invaluable hints for those new to baking. Her Grandma's recipes were written on

scraps of paper, collected from her days in service in Wath on Dearne in the early 1900s, and over her long life baking for friends and family in Bolton on Dearne until she died in 1977, at the age of 91. Grandma Abson's Traditional Baking is a real home baking cook book, but also has an historical interest with the story of Grandma's life; firstly as a cook inservice with an Edwardian family in the 1900s and, subsequently, a long life baking for her family and friends. Her recipes include classic recipes like Victoria Sponge, Marmalade Spice Cake, Simnel Cake Fruit Scones, Shortbread Biscuits, Apple Pie, Bakewell Pudding, Ginger Pudding, and her own signature cakes and puddings, such as Paradise Cake, Bridlington Cake, and Wilkins Cake. How about Dream Cake? ...Ooooooh! Oat Ginger Biscuits, Wiscard Gingerbread, and Railway Pudding - as well as jams and

chutneys. There is every kind of pudding, and even step-by-step instructions on how to make the perfect Apple Pie! Meryl says, “The huge surge of interest in baking encouraged me to share the passion I have for the skills, smells, and delights of home baking, just as I learnt with my Grandma as a child in the 1950s.” The book was launched in June 2011, when Dearne Valley College catering students served up a whole variety of delicious treats they had made from her collection of recipes, under the supervision of the College's catering staff. John Foster - MBE of Foster's Bakery - talked about the relevance of 'Grandmas' baking today, stating “The future of the food industry now points to a return to the skills acquired in times of shortage.” 'Grandmas' philosophy was about turning out something good and tasty from limited resources, so she

Skiing with Confidence

focused on the few feet of snow in front of them. They flinch when they hear someone behind them and maybe even stop dead if they hear a snowboarder!”

Leading South Yorkshirebased life and confidence coach Kay Gill of Red Shoes coaching has just launched a new book and MP3 recording package called 'Skiing with Confidence' in time for the coming ski season. As a highly qualified, experienced personal success coach, Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) Practitioner and clinical sports massage therapist, Kay has become an expert in human behaviour, the human body and the link between the two. Through many years of experience on and off the slopes, Kay teaches adults and children how to ski without fear and nervousness so they can improve their skiing and enjoy their holidays. Kay

promises there is no need to spend more money on lessons to improve your technique; over many years she has discovered it's all in mental exercises you can practise before you even leave home. Kay explains, “Many of my clients have had an accident whilst skiing and are left suffering from nervousness, fear and a severe loss of confidence. Some have spent holiday after holiday playing catch up with people skiing much too fast for them or were thrown into the deep end by some insensitive nerd when learning and have been frightened ever since. It's a much more common problem than people realise. You only have to spend a short time watching how skiers act on the hill to notice those people who are lacking confidence. The problem ranges from being a bit uncertain to being out and out petrified. You can spot the scared skiers from the chair lift; they are stiff with their tunnel vision

Kay understands because she has been that nervous skier in the past! She remembers, “I discovered skiing fairly late on in life when the Sheffield Dry Ski Slope was opened in 1989. A relative took my three children along for an introductory lesson and they were immediately hooked. Personally I had never had any intention of learning to ski, I was fearful of playground slides as a child and still fall over given a bad weather forecast but in the interest of potential future family holidays I was talked into having a go. From the outset I was petrified! Every night before my weekly lesson I would lie in bed totally tense, unable to sleep, skiing the dreaded slope in my mind. BUT I persevered and became hooked. "I eventually left the sticky plastic slope in Sheffield for

would cut down the amount of sugar in her cake/pudding/biscuit recipes and flavour them with things like cinnamon, mixed spice, and use honey or golden syrup instead. Grandma used simple and seasonal ingredients that were available to her at the time, so the simplicity of recipes which work is proving popular with those who are new to baking, and want to acquire some basic baking skills. You can read more about what Meryl has been doing on her weekly baking Blog at, which is attracting followers among baking enthusiasts from all over the world, and find Grandma Abson on Facebook, and @grandmaabson on Twitter. the snow of the French Alps. The environment was stunning, but with the added speed factor I discovered on snow, my fear stayed with me - compounded after a bad fall injuring a knee ligament that left me on crutches for weeks. "But, a spin off from my own personal growth and learning is that I have become an excellent skier, overcoming my fear and nervousness on the ski slopes. I even eventually gained a dry slope ski teaching qualification and helped set up the Sharks Childrens' Ski Club at the Sheffield Ski Village. My mission now is to help every one of those scared skiers I see when riding the lifts to build their confidence and enjoy the sport they obviously love. To help me achieve this goal I have put my coaching and NLP skills to work to produce a brilliantly simple yet effective tips booklet and relaxation/visualisation recording which is readily

Grandma’s book is enjoying wide media coverage, including Deliciously Yorkshire's website. You can buy Grandma Abson’s Traditional Baking at, from branches of Waterstones or on Amazon. Meryl says: ‘It has definitely been a whirlwind since I launched Grandma’s book, with lots of excitement and plenty of tasty baking.’ If you have a treasured recipe, don’t forget to send it on for Meryl to share with everyone out there. There’s a whole world ready to experience Grandma Abson’s Traditional Baking!

available from my website." Recently one of Kay's clients said, “Amazingly simple but amazingly effective! I wanted something simple to replace the little voice that sometimes popped up and sabotaged my skiing. Eureka! Kay's book hit the mark immediately. Without a second thought, or trying to put together every tip of every ski lesson I had ever had, I had the best skiing ever on my next holiday remembering one simple thing!” Kay is planning to combine her two passions, eventually owning a chalet in the Alps, either in Italy or France, from which she would run her 'Personal Development on Skis' courses with Yoga, meditation and personal development classes. People could come and do the thing they love, be in the glorious mountain environment, spend time with like minded people and learn and grow all at the same time.
