Have online platforms changed the way designers consume trends?

Habits

The advent of the Internet has made the job of sourcing inspiration and ideas incredibly easy for designers. In response the web has become a home to a huge amount of design blogs, acting as one extensive and ever expanding digital scrapbook of visual culture. However due to ongoing observations, it is quite noticeable that there is a great overlap in the content posted on a daily basis, as each blog is ‘uniquely subjective’ when it comes to the type of work they post. However the ‘motivation behind posting is universal: the cultural gain of sharing content.’ (Dreyer, 2013) Zita and Sloboda agree, as they run the online portal Trend list (Fig.13), which established itself based on the movements of the international blog scene. They believe that ‘the Internet and it’s associated social networks and blogs are so wide spread that they’re able to create and dictate trends.’ (Kubíková, 2013)

The main focus to Tumblr is liking and re-blogging posts. Re-blogging content from other blogs forms a fascinatingly ‘dynamic Chinese whisper of visual culture.’

‘Design that is represented online looks increasingly aesthetic led (same images being constantly shared, are always out of context with no explanation) when in fact the work itself could be a lot more ideas led when seen in context’ Laura Gordon, Co -Founder of Crowd Talks

Due to the influence of online platforms it has become easier for designers to dissect key features in the success of others work. They do so by reproducing the same aesthetics and ideals in their own work in order to earn the ‘lucrative symbolic capital.’ (Dreyer, 2013)

Many designers believe the ‘very word ‘trend’ is something of a taboo, conjuring up images of blind imitation of whatever’s hot at any given time, rather than encouraging genuine innovation and independent creative thought.’ FranklinTill

‘At work they aren’t on Pinterest, Tumblr and so on looking at other design. Developing your own style and approach is becoming more and more difficult. Maintaining it is a daily challenge.’ Kate Moross

‘There is an online community practicing design with the understanding that the entire process consists solely of applying style to anything.’ Amy West

‘The medium of the Internet and social networks homogenises design, and elevates nicely presented, but sterile works. Design culture is becoming a copy of a copy, or a reblog of a reblog.’ Trend List

‘Design is a reference-based practice. It’s rooted to the context of which it operates and is truly a product of its time. Every designer is influenced by what has come before and their own environment. You can’t escape this and you’d be a fool if you tried.’ Craig OLDHAM

‘You are always a child of your time, you can not step out of that!’ Wim Crouwel

‘The design landscape of the future should be divided into two opposing, innovative powers – one is the desire to look forward and propagate tech savvy advancements to survive these times of fast living. FranklinTill

The other is the relevance of looking backwards and the renewal of past traditions in a quest for authenticity.’ FranklinTill

Trends + Design Platforms

Geographically, the intellectual origins of the most challenging trend setting work found on Trend List are created in the European countries of Belgium, France, Germany and The Netherlands. Perhaps the origins of the work also have something to do with the fact that these countries provide the support for young designers to be experimental - it’s a rather different matter if you are leaving college with £20,000 of debt. Commercially viable work, in those circumstances, has its attractions and not too many brands, as yet, are in the market for 3D stretched Arial. Indeed, most of the work found on Trend List is for very small-scale fashion, music or cultural clients, or self-initiated. Pretty Ugly or plain ugly? Burgoyne Creative Review Blog

Trends + Design Platforms

Blogs and Platforms have become filtering mechanisms that people tend to only pay attention to, as they are most applicable to them. This theory can also be applied to how people stick to the same design journals and magazines. Which implies that trendsetters only trust certain resources that in time have gained their respect. Due to this, blogs and journals that are providing creatives with a source that are allowing trend orientated groups of people to retreat into an insular world inhabited by only like- minded people. To the right shows four browsers that illustrate four seperate individual behance appreciation pages. It is interesting to see how they are all looking at very similar content, and in some cases the same projects. Two projects in particular are very similar (The rubber gloves and the still life of a pink hand) Both use the same pastel colours and similar photographic styles.
