FULL BRAKE FLUID CHANGE Brake fluid is hygroscopic. This means that it will readily absorb moisture. Moisture in your brake fluid does two things. When the brake fluid becomes hot under hard braking, the water in the brake fluid boils. This causes steam voids in the brake system which causes a dramatic reduction in braking capability. In severe cases it can cause braking capability to be lost completely. Moisture in the brake system also causes internal corrosion of brake system components resulting in loss of braking capability. Therefore, it is extremely important to change your brake fluid at the specified intervals

The project also aims to ensure all schools in the area have access to a defibrillator, either a public accessible unit or one provided for their medical room. An initial Public Access Defibrillator has been installed outside of Boots the Chemist in Portishead High Street, with additional units being planned for other parts of the town and surrounding areas, as and when funds are raised. The Lions will be holding specific fundraising events to raise funds and awareness of the project, details of which will be published in the near future. School shines in Rotary competitions

upils from Gordano School have been participating in various national competitions organised by the Rotary Club. Hannah Clay, Beth Payne and Sabrina Lee took part in the Rotary Youth Speaks competition held at Maisemore. Beth acted as the chairperson and had two minutes to introduce the team and subject. Twenty-three pupils also competed in the Young Writer competition. The subject this year was “What a difference that made to my life/their lives” and candidates were asked to write something of no more than 500 words. Rebecca Nye was the local winner. n Monday February 10 Sport Relief swept into Portishead in spectacular style. Since January 12 a baton has been zig-zagging its way across the country with the help of over 200 parent bloggers in a relay race known as Team Honk Relay, in a bid to raise £20,000 for Sport Relief. When I requested a reroute so the race would include our lovely town of Portishead, I 01275 858785 / 07557 475108 hadn’t realised the extent of the challenge I was taking on! with the most beautifully turned out and well behaved horses. The horses and riders made an impressive entrance via Wyndham Way, from where they walked calmly through the High St, turning the heads of astonished shoppers as they passed. They ended up at the Poacher, which had kindly allowed us to use the car park for a safe resting area. While we were there we were rewarded with an impromptu donation which had been generously collected at a seniors’ coffee morning. A welcome addition to the pot, thank you! Next it was time for The Big Red Pants Fun Run – no actual running

ability was required, but the wearing of red pants and looking slightly ridiculous was essential! We ‘ran’ along the High St, stopping every now and again for a chat along the way to the Lake Grounds, making random unscheduled

port Relief stops to promote Sport Relief to amused staff and customers at Parish Wharf, Lidl, Morrisons and H & W. Emma from Impero Lounge did an absolutely amazing job of making customised Sport Relief collecting tins for the bar, as well as getting the staff to come to work in red pants for the day. Many thanks also to Olly from H & W who donated his previous night’s tips to the fund and to everyone else who’s helped boost the total. By the end of the fun run, only two of us had survived, losing the others to the school run because they evidently just couldn’t keep up with our challenging pace. At the Lakegrounds the baton had a short rest so the children who’d been at school could come and join in our 3000 mile relay race.

Local dryathlon raises over £200

F After a fun warm up led by MissFit’s tireless Sam, we passed the well travelled baton on to the youngsters before finally heading to the youth centre for refreshments and to help celebrate the launch of the centre’s ‘All Night Sport Relief Fundraiser’ which will be held at a later date. The following morning an anonymous giant vulpine creature, who claimed to be working on behalf of Portishead’s Fox Cycling swiped the baton and cycled 38 miles to Gloucester with it. We wish him and it well on their way! Thank you Mr Fox. For more information or to find out how to donate visit the Practically Perfect Mum’s Website.

uneral director Matthew Aldridge of F H Halliday & Son in Portishead has raised over £200 for his part in the Cancer Research UK’s Dryathlon challenge. Five star rating

for Mezze at the White Lion

fter a shaky start, when Portishead’s Mezze at the White Lion was awarded only one star following a Food Standards Agency inspection, it is happy to announce it has now been awarded five stars! Food Standard Agency inspectors awarded The White Lion in Portishead High Street with a “very good” five star rating and commended the venue after a visit in January. Each business is given a ‘hygiene rating’ of between zero and five after being inspected by a Food Safety Officer from the local authority. The rating shows how closely the business is now meeting the

requirements of food hygiene law, with a five rating given only to venues with ‘very good’ hygiene standards. James Brown, Mezze Director, said: “We are delighted with this new five star rating, which shows we are among the best rated restaurants in the region. “We have only been operating in Portishead for six months and therefore we are immensely proud to gain the top award which matches our fast growing reputation.” Inspectors examine how hygienically the food is handled, prepared, cooked, reheated, cooled and stored, the condition of the structure of the buildings and its cleanliness, layout, lighting, ventilation and other facilities. In addition inspectors’ record how the business manages and records what it does to make sure food is safe. Jane Day, Principal Officer Public Health, said in the report: “As a result of this inspection Mezze at the White Lion has been given a Food Hygiene rating of five. “The rating refers to the conclusion that it is fully compliant with the current legal requirements for food hygiene management and structure. “The staff should be commended on their efforts and encouraged to maintain these standards.” Photograph: Marius Barsan and Croitor Florin from Mezze at the White Lion, celebrating a new five star rating

Award for lifeboat volunteer A member of the Portishead and Bristol Lifeboat crew will be awarded the Resuscitation Certificate from the Royal Humane Society in April for his actions in saving the life of a Portishead man but not on the lifeboat! James Hart was nominated for the award by fellow crew member Adam Forrest, in his capacity as a work colleague and a friend of Chris Mead, the man whose life was saved. Here is Chris’ account of events on a day he will never forget in June 2013: The day started pretty much the same as any other warm summer’s day with the exception that it was the day of Bristol’s Biggest Bike Ride. Having completed the ride I rang my wife to tell her I would be

approximately an hour and I was just having a coffee and sandwich with some other riders. Having said my goodbyes I made my way back down the Portway over the M5 Bridge and back into Portishead. Once in Portishead I have to climb Avon Way, a steep hill which takes me to my home. Nearing the top of the hill without prior warning or pain I suffered a fatal heart attack, I have been told that I was probably dead before I hit the ground. This of course stopped the traffic on Avon Way. Some members of the public detached me from my bike and dragged me to the kerb side and placed me into the recovery position. Also stopped in the traffic was James Hart and his partner Gemma. James witnessed the events unfold and then made a life or death decision. He decided to leave his car to see if he could assist. When he reached my side he instantly recognised that I was no longer breathing. He quickly took charge and commenced CPR.

It was his quick action that kept my circulation going whilst the call went out for an ambulance.

Community News The call was picked up by a rapid response ambulance that was making its way through Portishead. When the ambulance arrived, the paramedic realised my heart had stopped and apart from James continuing CPR I was without life. They injected me twice directly into the heart and then commenced work with the defibrillator, on the third shock my heart started beating again but I had no breathing reflex. A tube was inserted into my wind pipe with a bellows type attachment to force air into my lungs. By this time someone had used the emergency number I carry with me and my wife had arrived on the scene. Another ambulance had arrived and they were able to transport me to the Bristol Royal Infirmary where I was stabilised. The problem was apparently a collapsed artery and so a stent was fitted to re-inflate the artery. I was placed into a medically induced coma and was in hospital for two to three weeks, after which I was allowed home to make my slow recovery. It doesn’t matter what training a person has in order to save life, it’s the decision they make if and when the time comes to

put it in to practice. They can choose to sit and remain an observer or they can act and respond by putting their training to good use. It’s a split second decision and one that can mean, as in my case, life or death. It’s because James made the decision to get involved and not be an observer that I am here today. Thank you so much James.”

on the phone it all worked out with the best possible result. The medical training I have received as a volunteer with the lifeboat gave me the confidence to just get on with what Chris needed. I don’t think I did any more than anyone else would have to be honest, I just happened to be there at the right time.”

And James recalls: “It is all a bit of a blur to be honest, I could see when I arrived on the scene that Chris wasn’t breathing.

Experienced Early years/Key stage 1 retired teacher

I checked and discovered that he had no pulse, so my lifeboat training immediately kicked in and I just started with chest compressions.

I just knew it was the right thing to do. I moved Chris and began the lifesaving CPR. Another lady arrived and said she had a medical background, she offered to do breaths for me, so we worked as a team. 10 years of Autolink

utolink has been in business for 10 years and would like to say a big thank you for all the support and recommendation from all their loyal customers who have helped them to grow the business through one of the most difficult recessions. Owners Keith and Helen are a local Portishead family and have lived in the town for over 20 years. They said: “We take a great deal of pride in not just what we have achieved as a company but also all the wonderful relationships we have developed with a lot of our customers without whom we would be lost. “During this recession people have understandably sought out the cheapest repairs and parts they could find but we have always believed it is better to offer an honest approach to repairing vehicles combined with parts that are going to last. “We invested over £15,000 in equipment and training during 2013 to enable our trained technicians to diagnose vehicle faults as quickly and accurately as possible, avoiding the approach some garages take of fitting parts in the hope of finding the fault which can be very time consuming and needlessly expensive. “Unfortunately some garages still have a reputation for dishonesty and overcharging, something we are constantly striving to prove doesn’t happen here. We are a Bosch Autocrew franchise with extremely demanding standards of operation, we have also subscribed to the Industry Code Of Practice (Motorcodes).

This gives our customers not only the peace of mind of knowing there is an independent body that will help with any problems but it also gives them the ability to post honest and accurate feedback to help other customers have some prior knowledge of our customer service standards, our current score is 99% with 10 out of 10 customers recommending us to others.” Autolink’s used car operation can help with any make or model of car and as an authorised Motabilty dealer they have a computer system with over a thousand one owner low mileage vehicles, all with fantastic history and a choice of colours and different specifications. They sold over 600 cars last year thanks to both the internet and local customers coming back time and time again, as well as recommending Autolink to their friends and family. Keith added: “If you don’t see the car you are looking for why not give us a list of your requirements and let us find it for you. We offer a 12 month warranty on all our retail stock along with a comprehensive pre-delivery service and inspection.” Both Keith and Helen want to say thanks again for the last ten years and they very much look forward to the next ten.

PACT - You can make a difference

Next PACT meeting - March 27 - Fedden Room in the Folk Hall 7pm

ortishead demonstrates brilliant examples of people power. Portishead residents are known for getting things done. When something happens in our town that the residents are not happy about, concerned people set up an action group to help make sure something is done about it. Portishead Open Air Pool is a great example of this. When the council wanted to close it for good, the residents said, “Not on your life!” An action group formed to fight for the pool to stay open and now it is run by a community trust. Not only is it still open, but it is profitable too, allowing continual improvements to be made to the seafront facility. Portishead Youth Centre is another example of the determination of Portishead people. When the district council withdrew funding for general youth work, volunteers and staff stepped in and not only kept the centre going but increased its facilities. With both of the above, the sheer weight of public opinion encouraged the town

council to generously support both projects. But it’s not just community facilities that benefit from people power. Antisocial behaviour, parking problems and much more have been addressed and problems reduced because residents have taken their concerns to local PACT meetings and the issues have been acted upon. As a direct result of residents taking their concerns about boy racers in a Wyndham Way car park to the PACT meetings, barriers have been installed so that it can be closed to vehicles during the night. What does PACT stand for? PACT stands for Partners And Communities Together – it’s a meeting of partners like the police, councillors, housing representatives and members of the public. What goes on at PACT meetings? PACT meetings are an opportunity for the community to have their say on what matters the most to them in their area.

You are helping to PACT chairman Nick Gough paint an with PC Simon Tamilia accurate picture of what is really happening locally. The problems encountered are discussed and solutions explored. From the issues raised at the meeting and those brought to the meeting by your neighbourhood police officers up to three priorities are decided. The meetings are quite informal and you don’t need to advise anyone in advance if you are going to attend or if you want to speak. Just turn up and present your concerns. What are PACT priorities? PACT priorities are problems that the police and other official bodies try to solve in partnership in a set time, before the next PACT meeting. The committee works with the different agencies and returns to the next meeting with a progress report. The next Portishead PACT meeting is on March 27 in the Fedden Room at the Folk Hall in the High Street at 7pm. Why not go along and have your say?

Portishead man to cycle 420km in Death Valley A

Portishead resident is attempting a 420km cycle through Death Valley, Nevada, to help raise money and awareness for AGE UK. Andy Marshall is doing the challenge in April with three friends – Scott Bowie, Ian Forward and Jason Warhurst. Mercer, who Andy works for in Bristol, has heavily supported the group. Andy, 37, said: “The aim is to raise funds for AGE UK and raise awareness for the fantastic job they do in providing essential support services to the elderly, both locally and nationally. “We have created a JustGiving page with a minimum target of £14,400, but it would be great to exceed this and be able to hand over £20,000 plus to AGE UK.” Death Valley National Park is located in the South California Desert in Nevada and is the largest park in the USA covering 3.4 million acres. Andy added: “The challenge is to cover 420km in five days in one of the hottest and driest deserts on earth. It will take us to the highest and lowest elevation of the contiguous United States and end in the bright lights of Las Vegas.” Anyone who would like to donate can visit

Mother's Day

Mother’s Day S

poiling our mums isn’t something we should do only once a year, but Mothering Sunday does provide the perfect opportunity to remind our mum’s how very special they are to

us. The history of Mother’s Day is centuries old with early celebrations traced back to ancient Greece, when a day was set aside in honour of Rhea, Mother of the Gods. During the 17th century early Christians in England allocated a day to honour Mary, the mother of Christ, this was later expanded to include all mothers, and named as the Mothering Sunday. Mother’s Day is celebrated all over the world and it’s the ideal occasion to pay tribute to the person who has had a great impact on our lives, a person whose love and care knows no boundaries. Some people will travel miles to be with their mum on her special day, while others will send flowers, gifts and cards.

Mum of two, Sarah Tynan, who runs Sarah Tynan Flowers at Mother Nature in Portishead High Street, says: “Mother’s Day is one of the busiest days of the year for a florist but I still want to spend some time with my family, so for us the perfect solution is that everyone helps out. I can spend Mother’s Day at work with my mum, husband and my children but once our work is done we can enjoy some treats.

Keeping youngsters fit

t is well documented that the children of today are significantly less aerobically fit than they once were – for example, did you know that on average, it takes a child 90 seconds longer to run a mile than it did 30 years ago? Although one in three children are said to now be obese, you may have been led to believe that obesity is the only issue here but it is not. Children who are not necessarily overweight or overeating are frighteningly inactive which may ultimately have long-term effects on their future health. As children get older, it can be a challenge for them to carry out enough daily activity. This can be for various reasons including the increasing demands of school work, spending more time with digital devices, a lack of ‘active’ role models as well as busy working families and limited exercise opportunities

available to them. Kids are naturally physically active and at The hub. Everybody’s gym they believe youngsters just need to be presented with the right activity for them and with as many opportunities as possible. Tim Statton from the gym says: “Here at The hub. Everybody’s gym we know how important it is to focus on making exercise fun. When kids enjoy an activity, they are likely to want to do more and stick at it! It is also important for exercise to be structured, which is why we are able to offer a range of timetabled classes seven days a week so there are as many opportunities as possible available to children and young people. Some of our classes are specifically aimed at children including; Kids Martial Arts, Kids Circuits and Kids Ballet/Dance. For these

classes no additional adult supervision is required, the classes are taken by qualified and experienced instructors. At The Fitness Hub we welcome everybody to use the gym facilities as well as the timetabled classes. Our stipulation is that under 14s must be accompanied by an adult. You don’t have to be a member, you can just turn up and pay to use the equipment, in fact a trip to the gym can provide quality family time for everyone to enjoy. The benefits are endless and include strong muscles and bones, weight control, decreased risk of developing serious illnesses and better quality sleep. We are here to help inspire people of all ages to develop good levels of fitness that will keep you healthy in body and mind both now and far into the future. So, no excuses come down and join us at The hub. Everybody’s gym today.” The full timetable can be viewed at

heatre art school Stagecoach, which has classes in Portishead and the surrounding towns, congratulates one of their pupils on her TV debut. It’s not every day an 11-year-old gets to star alongside a veteran TV actor, but Stagecoach pupil Pollyana (pictured right) did just that. After several rounds of auditions, Pollyana was cast alongside James Bolan, long-time TV star who currently plays the Grandpa in Grandpa in my Pocket on CBeebies. Pollyana had her TV debut as Belinda-Lucinda, a girl who is determined to spoil everyone’s fun. She loved the time on camera working with all the other child actors – she stars in at least two episodes and hopes the producers will keep her character alive for a good long while. Every week Pollyana joins her friends Grace and Ruby and many other children aged 4-18 at Stagecoach to train in singing, dance and drama classes. This term their voices are soaring and feet can’t stop moving to brilliant musical theatre tunes. Not to be outdone, Grace and Ruby have just appeared in an advert for Scottish Widows on ITV – they got a prime spot during Dancing on Ice and the ad is still airing, so look out for two giggling girls. A spokesman for Stagecoach said: “Stagecoach is immensely proud of every achievement their students make, whether on TV like these girls, or the confidence to sing that first solo in front of an audience of parents and friends.” If your child could do with developing their confidence, voice, co-ordination and creativity, telephone 0117 953 2500 or visit to find out more about how Stagecoach stretches children in three directions at once.

Where to Walk - Clifton By Michael Watts of the Portishead Strollers

his month’s walk takes a look at some of the splendours of Clifton and its wonderful architecture. The walk is on paths and pavements but there are some busy roads to cross, so please be careful. I suggest you park in North Road towards the Suspension Bridge end or go by bus – there is a stop at the top of Rownham Hill opposite the gates to Ashton Court. Walk across Clifton Suspension Bridge and take the footpath on the left immediately after the toll booth on the Clifton side. Walk up the path until it joins a wider footpath and turn left heading uphill towards the Observatory. Follow the path around the cliff edge and take time to enjoy the spectacular views of Brunel’s masterpiece. Stay close to the cliff edge and continue walking downhill through the trees until you merge with a wider footpath running alongside Clifton Down. Fork left at this junction and walk down until you see Clifton Down split into two roads on your right across the opposite side of the road. Cross the road and walk the right hand fork of Clifton Down. Amongst the many fine houses you see will be The Mansion House, home to Bristol’s

Lord Mayor since 1874. Although still an official residence, the building is more widely used for private functions, conferences and weddings these days. At the end of the road turn left and cross over to the right hand side of the road. Turn right at the busy junction and travel a short distance to College Road where you turn right. Go past the Zoological Gardens building and carry on up College Road until you reach a major crossroads adjacent to Clifton High School. Turn right at these cross roads and walk up to Christ Church, a splendid Grade 2 listed building which was built in 1841. You can now head straight for the Suspension Bridge for your return journey, or you can sample the many delights and coffee shops of Clifton Village which are a short walk from Christ Church. Portishead Strollers offer regular walks lasting about 1 hour. The group’s next two are on Monday, March 10 at 11am from Waverley Court, Clevedon and Monday, March 24 at 11am from the Lake Grounds, Portishead. Full details of the Health Walk scheme can be found in leaflets available in the library, or you can phone the North Somerset Sport and Active Lifestyles team on 01275 882730.

Beware the

Comuter aety

scammers! By Roger Whitfield of Nortech Computers

n the last couple of years there has been an alarming increase in the number of scams being directed at computer users. With most people now being savvy about online security it has become more difficult for the scammers to access your computer. Anti-virus and internet security products have made it almost impossible for a scammer to get in so they have started to direct their attention to the computer users rather than the computer itself. These scams come in many different forms, one of the worst being the phone call purporting to be from Microsoft, they tell you that your computer has reported problems to them and offer to fix it for you, they then have you download some remote support software and hey presto they are into your computer. Once they have access they can do anything they want, normally they just tell you it is broken and you will have to pay for them to fix it but

Telephone 01275 376379

others will install a virus on your computer or try and collect your personal details. All in all, once you have let them in, your computer is compromised and should not be used again for any personal or business communication until it has been checked and any threats removed. People have reported being plagued with emails from the Inland Revenue, Royal Mail, banks and parcel delivery companies, these emails all have a couple of things in common, first they seem to be from someone that you would not normally

block emails from and secondly they have a file attached in Zip format. Beware because this could be a virus. If you open the file your computer could become infected so a virus check and full clean-up from a reputable company such as Nortech is vital. For advice call Roger on 818699.

Remembering John Hall

ohn Hall, a well known resident of Portishead, a much loved school teacher and a popular member of the Portishead parish clergy, sadly died at his home on January 30, aged 90. John’s family shares an insight to his life with Gordano Living readers. John was born in July 1923, in the Schoolhouse in Wroote, Lincolnshire, the elder of two brothers. During his school days he excelled at athletics, and set a record for the high jump which lasted for several years, and was only broken when the Fosbury Flop was introduced. John went to Bristol University to study chemistry, but after two years he interrupted his studies to join the navy, sailing from Pembroke Dock, first to take part in the D-Day landings, and then in convoy to the Middle East, for the invasion of Singapore and Malaya. Luckily the war ended before they arrived, and John spent his time engaged in a variety of missions as the captain of his motor launch. He liked to tell the story of how one of his crew was cleaning a hand-grenade and dropped it on the deck, minus the pin. John luckily managed to retrieve it and fling it in the sea just before it exploded. One of his missions was to a small island where he was greeted by a Japanese army, whose commander drew his sword, whilst his men emitted a sharp hissing noise. This was rather scary for John, but luckily they were surrendering, and handed CALL JEFF on 07435 332409 him the sword which was Visit our website at or kept in the Hall family for email

many years. After the war John returned to university, graduated and trained to be a teacher. Also shortly after the war, he visited a former naval colleague for dinner, met his wife-to-be Jeannie. Once married, John and Jeannie moved to Newhaven, Sussex, near his teaching job at Lewes Grammar School, and they had two daughters, Margaret and Jennifer. After a few years John found another teaching job at Long Ashton, and the family moved to Nailsea. He continued his love of sport by playing hockey for the school. They moved to Portishead when John joined Gordano School, where he enjoyed exploding empty Tate and Lyle syrup tins in the classroom. In chemistry lessons of course! He was head of chemistry and was also head of house. John enjoyed singing light opera and loved singing in choirs. Sadly, John’s daughter Margaret, living in Germany, became ill with cancer and died at the age of 46, with her parents, sister Jennifer, uncle Peter and auntie Janet at her bedside. Alongside his teaching, John decided to be ordained and attended Salisbury Theological College. He was ordained at Wells Cathedral with three others: “Four revs per hour”, as he described

eaders ies it. After this he worked in the Portishead parish for nearly 40 years as a nonstipendiary minister. He relished his role in the community in which he knew and was known by so many because he had taught them, or married them, christened their babies or presided over their parents’ funerals. At the same time, there was another side to John. This gentle, kind and well-loved man had a secret side to him, which not many people knew about. He was a conjuror. He entertained at old folks’ homes and at children’s parties. He was so good that he was once challenged when someone didn’t believe his ‘egg’ illusion was real, grabbed one of his eggs and threw it, only to find that it really was a real egg, as it landed on the expensive linen suit of a lady in the front row. In his role in the parish, he would offer support to those who had suffered a family bereavement, who would always feel comforted by his gentle manner and thoughtful words. He also used to visit Norwood Lodge, taking Holy Communion to those not well enough to get to church. He served until he was 85, when he told his family he was “starting to get a bit tired”. His last role in church was participating in the baptism of his two granddaughters Frances and Mabel. His very last role was to bless the weekly prayer group of ladies meeting with his wife at his home, which he continued to do until two days before he quietly died at home.

Ask the Vet Vet Shaun Taylor, from Vale Vets answers your questions I’m worried about my rabbit - she’s got a swollen tummy but she feels really thin and she’s really inactive and docile which is unusual. Sunday is a mini lop and she’s only about three-years-old. Please could you advise me on what I should do? Unfortunately rabbits have a knack of hiding their symptoms and pretending to be healthy, even when they’re not – this is an evolutionary skill they have developed, in order to appear stronger so that predators will be less likely to chase them. Because of this, if any illness is severe enough for a rabbit to show signs of lethargy, I would always advise urgent veterinary assessment. A swollen abdomen and thin body condition could indicate any number of gastro-intestinal issues, many of which are treatable. It is certainly worth booking an urgent appointment with your vet, particularly if your rabbit’s appetite is declining. If you have a question for me, you can submit it via our website at Just click on the Ask the Vet icon on our front page.

Portishead Easter Fit Feet Week Trail starting on April 12

o coincide with the nation’s keep feet fit week and to help encourage people to use the local shops and other businesses operating in our lovely town, Tanya Marriott, who owns Solelution family footwear store in Portishead High Street, is launching a town wide Easter Egg hunt. It costs £1 to enter and the proceeds will support local children’s charities. In our April edition Gordano Living will bring you full details of the trail, along with a map, explaining how you can win an array of different prizes. Entry forms will be available from Solelution between April 5 to 21. Using the clues provided, participants are invited to hunt in shops and businesses to find paper Easter eggs and footprints on display and answer questions. These need to be noted on the entry form and returned to Solelution. Prizes ranging from days out to meals for two and shopping vouchers will be included in the massive giveaway to winners.

Competitive Local Independent

he Society of Shoe Fitters (SSF) will hold National Shoe Fitting Week; under the banner Keep Feet ‘Fit’ on April 12. The SSF, which operates on a not-for-profit basis, wants to raise national awareness of the importance of well-fitting footwear, the vital service independent shoe retailers provide to the public and the need to keep shoe repairers busier than landfill sites. The Society’s Secretary, Laura West, explains “If everyone working in shoe shops trained to become professional Shoe Fitters we could save the NHS thousands of pounds over the coming years, which our members and organisation already do in a small way. If the public realised the importance of footwear, how it is made, and the detrimental effect it can have, then many jobs could be created and money on health care saved. Solelution, a member of the SSF, will be highlighting keeping feet fit with their competition and other in-store initiatives including a design a shoe contest.

By Chris Baker at Brackenwood Plant and Garden Centre. ingers crossed the rain has stopped! March can be unpredictable but hopefully we are now in to the warmer spring weather and we can really get gardening. (Or if the rain is still persisting I am more than happy to take up the topic of bog gardening!) Any how let’s hope things have settled down and we can get on. Be careful though as frosts can still be a hazard, keep vulnerable plants protected at night if frost is likely. It is now time to weed and dig over your borders incorporating as much organic matter as you can. Mulch the soil once you have done the work and remove moss and weeds from paths, patios and driveways. They may be boring tasks but if you don’t get on top of the garden now (especially the weeds!) it will come back to haunt you later in the season. If you are planning new beds and borders - mark the shape out with sand trickled from a bottle, remove the top layer of vegetation and dig the ground over, incorporating organic matter. If you are making a bed in the lawn, remove the turf and stack it upside down out of the way - after a year or two it will rot down into fantastic compost. Alternatively chop it up and bury upside down in the planting hole a good spade’s depth down. If you just dig it in the buried grass will re-grow and it will look like a lawn again by the summer! Growing your own! The emphasis on growing your own has increased dramatically over the last few years and I am sure this year will see increasing numbers again getting allotments or creating vegetable patches in their gardens. If you have the space, give it a try. There is nothing as

rewarding as eating your own home grown produce. If you have children get them involved too. They will love mucking in with the digging or creating their own areas. If you struggle to get them to eat their fruit and veg, you will be amazed at what they will eat if they have grown it themselves (probably even mud and worms!). You can get such an array of things to encourage children in the garden, from tools, gloves, growing kits and seed ranges and they will get so much enjoyment out of it. Vegetables to Sow Beetroot, Broad Beans, Early peas (but they may do best started in a gutter in the greenhouse then slipped into a trench), Brussels sprouts – early varieties like Peer Gynt will be ready in September, Kohlrabi, Leeks, Lettuce, Radish, Parsnips, Spinach. Potatoes can be sown once the soil has really warmed up and below are a few pointers on this very satisfying vegetable! Potatoes are grown from seed tubers that are certified free from virus and disease and are known as ‘seed potatoes’. It is important to always buy in fresh ‘seed potatoes’ each year, do not plant sprouted tubers from your own kitchen as these are not certified and may bring potato virus and disease to your garden. Seed potatoes can be purchased in late winter/early spring and need to be stored in a cool dark place before chitting and sowing out in March or April. Sow in Heat Your windowsill or a propagator in the greenhouse will come into use now to start off your tomatoes, peppers, aubergines and cucumbers.

Are you fed up with faceless property management companies?

any leasehold property owners become dissatisfied with the management of their property over a period of time, perhaps feeling that the decisions aren’t being made for them and are just imposed on them by the ‘faceless’ management company. In these circumstances, self-management can seem a very attractive alternative. But you need to think about the consequences and ask yourselves some difficult questions. For example: Do you know your way around leasehold property management legislation? Do you have the time or inclination to learn? Are you happy to collect monies owed from leaseholders, even if they are your neighbours? Do you really want people knocking on your door every time a light bulb needs changing? Or to complain about their neighbour’s new sound system? Will you be left holding the baby? Ultimately, most leaseholders simply

don’t have the time or the inclination to take on the management of the property and that is what Woods can offer. Woods has a highly proactive leasehold block management team, providing a comprehensive management service for every type of residential leasehold property. Jane Stockford, leasehold property management specialist, at Woods Estate Agents, says: “We often take on management from self-managers and they all say they would never go back and we can often do the difficult things at a property that self-managers would find impossible.” Our industry-validated service is cost efficient – with your own dedicated ‘property manager’ – and is fully compliant with all relevant legislation. If you recognise the value of appointing a good managing agent and would like to find out more then call Jane Stockford at Woods now on 01275 343641.

Look up! And get more space at home for just £325

e’d all like more room at home, but not everyone can afford to move or extend. So what if there was a way to get extra space for just a few hundred pounds, ready to use in less than a day? In truth, that space is already there, it just may not be being used to its full potential. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited on rare occasions; a precarious scramble across dusty beams with torch in hand, clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place can quickly be turned into an easily accessed space ideal for storage. So shouldn’t we be making the most of it? That’s where More Than Loft Ladders (MTLL) comes in. Founded six years ago, MTLL specialises in generating space by making lofts easily accessible. The latest MTLL

How to Structure a Gym Workout Routine Every month top personal trainer Matt Bembridge, AKA Gym Professor, provides an exercise of the month for readers to try. This month he tells us how to structure a gym workout routine.

There are four common elements that I’m asked about when it comes to structuring a gym workout routine. They are: exercise choices, exercise order, sets and repetitions, and training days. Below, I briefly address these elements. Exercise Choices The exercise choices should be appropriate to the participant’s ability and goals. For example, a football player may perform exercises that mimic movements used on the pitch, whereas a strength athlete is likely to perform mainly compound exercises. Exercise Order Often, muscle groups work together to perform an exercise (whether in unison or other), therefore, we should consider the

roles that these muscle groups play and the subsequent order in which we perform exercises within our workout routines. For example, as our core muscles (lower back and abs) stabilise us during most exercises, abs and lower back exercises should generally be performed at the end of a workout. Sets and Repetitions Although some people are predisposed to be or look a certain way, thanks to their genetic make-up, our body still adapts to the stimulus we place upon it, thereby making it more efficient. In terms of sets and repetition ranges, these should be relative to our goals. For example, many would-be bodybuilders like to perform an infinite number of repetitions in order to feel a “pump”. Given that this “pump” is lactic acid build-up, they are increasing the endurance capabilities of their muscles by attempting to lift the same weight for a longer duration each time. Their muscle will only adapt and grow if their weight training warrants it - frequently and consistently subjecting the muscles to a greater load. Training Days Avoid over training (this is rare!), but be

aware that not training often enough will not bring about the desired physiological changes. Circumstances may indicate whether you are training too little or too much. For example, a common undertraining mistake for a gym newbie to make is to start on split-routine, whereby they train a body part once a week. Their muscles ache for several days afterwards and yet the weights they’re lifting remain the same. Why? They are not training frequently enough for their muscles to warrant adapting (growing) to cope with the load being lifted, therefore, each week they suffer the same muscle soreness and can only lift the same weight. In this instance, a greater frequency of training (perhaps each body part twice a week) and an increase of dietary protein would be advisable I hope you find this information useful. Pure Results Fitness

By Dan Meredith

Try the following... Hopping on the spot, standing on one leg, holding a kettlebell overhead for exactly 42 seconds! I once managed to convince a long term friend that doing the above sequence was one of the best exercises for working her core muscles. Of course, this advice was utter nonsense, but the point I wanted to make to my friend, was, that when people are looking for that elusive flat stomach, to lose weight for a holiday or a special event, or perform to their best ability, it is pretty easy to convince them ANYTHING will work! That brings us to the heart of the matter. Pure Results (that’s us - the core team in the picture - I’m the one with the beard) have worked with hundreds of clients all over the UK and listened to the varied and many reasons people want to change their bodies, eating habits and lifestyles. Sadly some fitness businesses are only interested in making a quick buck and fail to focus sufficiently on the client as an individual and THEIR needs. At Pure Results we pride ourselves on doing things a little differently. Our focus is not only on achieving the results you are after, but we GUARANTEE that we will get you to your goal.

We will explain more about that in the April edition of Gordano Living, but for now we want to give a few lucky readers who want to improve their fitness and change their habits the chance to get started with a BANG!

We are offering the first eight readers to email or call us with the reference GORDPR1, a chance to visit our private, personal training studio.

Just think - your own personal gym with no waiting for equipment, no sweaty kit to wipe down and no one watching you workout. Each of the lucky readers

will receive a complimentary diagnostic session worth £75 and will get to sit down with a highly trained fitness professional, ask as many questions

as desired and find out more about the areas of interest - from weight loss, fitness and nutrition to improving overall

sports performance, reducing body pain and general mobility improvement. We can tell you exactly where you are right now with regards to your fitness, body fat, metabolic ages, etc. and provide you with a step by step guide on how to achieve your goals within a realistic time frame. In fact, I will even throw in a private one to one training session as well. National research suggests that by the end of February 2014 only 6% of the people who had set out with health and fitness goals for the New Year are actually still on track! Why not let Pure Results give you a helping hand? Your health and your success are as important to us as it is to you. We look forward to seeing you very soon.

Fibredontics will bring your smile back!

ibredontics is the name given to the field of dentistry where fibre reinforced composites are used. Lime Tree Dental Practice is always looking to introduce new ideas and treatments for the benefit of its patients and they can now offer fibredontics, an exciting new treatment that uses state of the art materials.

They bed strong metalfree fibres or mesh into composites (white filling materials) to give extremely strong and cosmetic solutions in a broad range of dental situations. They can be used as an alternative to implants and conventional bridges as a permanent solution when replacing missing teeth, at a fraction of the cost. And the treatment is finished in one visit.

Replacing missing teeth, splinting loose teeth, and broken teeth are just a few of the circumstances where this new “Fibredontics” can be used.

In most cases, patients want a simple, non-invasive and cost effective treatment. The fibre ribbons are glued to the back of the adjacent teeth. This fibre bridges the gap. The fibres give the new tooth strength. The new tooth is then constructed in the mouth from tooth coloured Block Book composite materials. 5 Classes

What are the main advantages of the Fibre Reinforced Composite bridges, against other replacement treatment options? • • • • • • •

get 6th FREE!

Cost effective treatment option - half the cost of conventional bridge work. Less drilling - most cases done without dental injections. Very little preparation on the anchor teeth. Single appointment procedure. If required, the structure can be easily repaired or remodelled. Immediate - no waiting for the final prosthesis. Reversible - as no damage is done to the anchor teeth, the fibre can be removed and other treatment options can follow.

Social Anxiety

or some people, walking into a shop, the local pub or coffee shop, can cause anxiety, particularly if there are crowds. Untreated, it can move from making us timid or shy to an extreme form of social phobia. Statistically, only 5% to 10% of people with social phobia in the UK currently get treatment for it. Rae Arundel of Harbourside Hypnotherapy says: “People with social phobia have a belief that everyone knows they are anxious and embarrassed. Symptoms range from blushing, breathlessness, stammering, mental blanking, sweating, butterflies and heart racing, to panic attacks.” Rae has seen a rise in this type of issue in her hypnotherapy practice. She adds: “This extreme condition can have an effect on simple social interactions and cause the sufferer to retreat, avoiding social situations and contact. People can experience this type of phobia when answering the phone, speaking in public or classrooms, business meetings, communicating with people in authority like a teacher or boss, and visiting restaurants, shops, cinema or theatre. It’s a cycle that if it goes unbroken, can lead to feelings of severe isolation and depression. When people stop themselves having positive experiences within a social setting, it can turn into fear, causing negative

Get back on track By Zoe Holt

ave those New Year resolutions started to slip? Do you need help to get back on track? Take some advice…….. There is a lot of truth in the phrase ‘it’s all in the mind’. Often, sticking to tough resolutions like ‘give up cake’, or ‘stop drinking’ are ruined by the simple fact that we love cake and alcohol. When we’re offered something we really like, it can take immense selfcontrol to say no. Hypnosis can increase self-control by teaching greater awareness of yourself. This stronger awareness enables you to feel a greater sense of responsibility for your actions, which can prevent you from making excuses, blaming others, or falling into self-denial or old self sabotaging habits. It is important to be in control of yourself and your actions, but it is also important to have fun and enjoy life. Typically if I ask a client to tell me how they want to be, they will give me a list of what they don’t want – I don’t want to be overweight, I don’t want to smoke, I don’t want to be miserable, I don’t want to be anxious or to obsess about food,

Fun, Friendly classes for all: Boxercise and Kickboxercise Adults, Kids and Family classes (4 years +) at Gordano Community Sports Centre, Gym. ‘Missfit Runners’ Run England registered running groups for beginners as well as mixed ability teams, aiming for personal or team goals such as 5k/10k or half marathon event. ‘Missfit Buggy Runners’ A mixture of jog/walk/run activities and toning exercises for every post natal stage and fitness ability Reserve your place now!

drink, work etc. It’s my job to help you describe what you do want instead – full of energy, healthy, slim, happy and confident. The difference is profound. Neuroscience demonstrates that when we imagine doing something, similar changes take place in the brain as if we are actually doing it. So we can accelerate the formation of new habits by simply thinking about the way we want to be. To find out more call today for a free consultation on 01275 265 775 or 07833 154 724 or email I also specialise in hypnobirthing, weight loss, IBS, young adults, smoking, stress management and sports therapy.

What can nurses claim for?

: I am a nurse and work for the NHS. What expenses am I able to claim for? : As a nurse you should be entitled to claim: • £100 per annum for laundering your uniform (assuming you are responsible for cleaning your uniform) • £12 per year for shoes where the wearing of a prescribed style is obligatory • £6 per year for stockings or tights, where the wearing of a prescribed style or colour is obligatory You may claim a higher deduction for laundry expenses, but this will need to be supported by receipts. For male nurses the reference to stockings and tights should be treated as including socks. You should also be able to claim for any professional fees or subscriptions, such as to the Royal College of Nursing or the Nursing and Midwifery Council, but you should check these against HMRC’s list of approved organisations. To claim the expenses, you can use form P87 if they amount to less than £2,500 per annum (which is available on HMRC’s website) or alternatively, submit a tax return. You may also find that the professional bodies you have subscribed to have their own form to recover the expenses. If you would like any assistance in claiming your expenses and in particular, backdating your claim, please feel free to contact us on 01275 390596 and we will be happy to assist you.
