FULL BRAKE FLUID CHANGE Brake fluid is hygroscopic. This means that it will readily absorb moisture. Moisture in your brake fluid does two things. When the brake fluid becomes hot under hard braking, the water in the brake fluid boils. This causes steam voids in the brake system which causes a dramatic reduction in braking capability. In severe cases it can cause braking capability to be lost completely. Moisture in the brake system also causes internal corrosion of brake system components resulting in loss of braking capability. Therefore, it is extremely important to change your brake fluid at the specified intervals

Poppy Appeal Success

he Royal British Legion (RBL) in Portishead would like to thank the people of Portishead and Pill for supporting the Poppy Appeal in 2013. The appeal raised £20,376, which is a fantastic effort and will go towards supporting our current troops and those who have served previously. At a special awards night organised by Portishead RBL, presentations were made to a number of collectors who between them have amassed more than 500 years of collecting. Particular recognition was given to Mary Benham (pictured below) who received an award for 40 years of collecting. A number of collectors in Pill received badges for 25 year of collecting. A number of new collectors and distributors joined the appeal last year and organisers are delighted to have new people on board. They will still need more help later this year and ask anyone willing to give a little of their time this autumn, to contact Sarah on gebbetts@yahoo. or 01275 390970.

Work starts on new lifeboat station

he Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) has awarded the contract to build a new lifeboat station in Portishead to Andrew Scott Ltd of Port Talbot in South Wales. Work to demolish the former Masonic Lodge in Pier Road will begin immediately and it will be replaced with a boathouse and launching ramp. The RNLI applied to build a new lifeboat station in Portishead after the charity’s trustees agreed to eventually adopt the independent Portishead Lifeboat Trust. In making the decision, the trustees said the formal adoption couldn’t go ahead until the lifesaving team had a home that was fit for purpose. At present the trust operates out

of a basic boathouse at the local sailing club. With planning permission granted for a new lifeboat station and launching ramp, the RNLI set about finding a contractor for the £1.9 million project, which will take up to ten months to complete. Howard Richings is the charity’s head of estates management. He said: “We’ve worked with Andrew Scott before when they provided the civil engineering expertise for the pontoon installation project at Barry Dock lifeboat station. A lot of their workforce are familiar with the RNLI and our ways of working and we very much look forward to a successful project that will provide Portishead with a brand new lifeboat station.” Mark Bowen, Managing Director of Andrew Scott Ltd, said: “We’re delighted to be working alongside the RNLI once again. The new lifeboat station will provide a

vital base for the volunteers who play such an important role in serving the people of Portishead and the surrounding communities. We are looking forward to delivering this prestigious project. It’s going to be challenging but we are confident that this contract will deliver real benefits to the area.” A formal adoption of The Portishead Lifeboat Trust by the RNLI won’t take place until the new lifeboat station is completed. The RNLI is running an appeal aimed at raising £180,000 towards the cost of the new lifeboat station. You can donate £5 by texting RNLI PORTISHEAD to 70300. ew play equipment installed at the Lake Grounds in Portishead last month means children of all ages can now enjoy the play equipment at the seafront park. Portishead Town Council has wanted to add equipment for older children to the existing play items, which were best suited to toddlers and infant school aged children, for several years. Landlord, North Somerset Council, had previously refused permission but after a campaign by local families in 2013 they conceded. The equipment consists of exercise bikes, a climbing frame, spinning see-saw and a roundabout.

New beginnings for St Nicholas’ Church

s Gordano Living was preparing to print this month’s issue, Portishead Church of England was preparing for a special event. On Saturday March 29, the Bishop of Taunton will formally consecrate St Nicholas’ Church at a special service beginning at 11am. Everyone is warmly invited to join them for this service. St Nicholas’ started as the chapel of the Nautical School and it was dedicated in 1912 by the then Bishop of Bath and Wells. After the school’s closure, the chapel was bought in 1986 by Portishead Church of England to replace St Augustine’s Church, which was too small for the growing congregation meeting there. However it retained its status as a chapel. In reality it has become more and more a proper church of the parish and this will be confirmed by changing its status from a dedicated to a consecrated building. Team rector, Andy Bryant, said, “The service is about affirming the future role of St Nicholas’ in the community. It is the beginning of us starting to re-imagine how the building can be better used for both the area of Redcliffe Bay and the wider town of Portishead. The consecration of St Nicholas’ is a re-birthing of the life of this building in the service of the community. “As part of this service we will also be celebrating a new working agreement between Portishead Church of England and Portishead United Reformed Church. Since the closure of their church building, Portishead URC has been holding its services

Community News

at St Nicholas’ Church. During that time we have enjoyed getting to know each other better and starting to share in each other’s activities. We have now decided that we want to formalise our working relationship and at the service on March 29 will be celebrating a new working agreement between our two churches. To help us celebrate this we are delighted to be welcoming the Revd Ruth Whitehead, Moderator of the SW Synod of the United Reformed Church, to share in the service.” A commitment to establish a new community café at St Nicholas’ Church, to be known as the Lighthouse Café, is at the heart of this new agreement. The organisers of the café will be exploring ways, in particular, of supporting the more vulnerable members of the community. In preparation for this new venture, Portishead United Reformed Church has generously agreed to pay for the upgrading of the Narthex part of the church to bring the building up to the required standards for a café. It is hoped the café will be opened in July this year.

Trust inspires budding wildlife photographers

eading local nature charity Avon Wildlife Trust is offering an exciting programme of family wildlife photography events at Portbury Wharf nature reserve, to celebrate ‘A Year in the Life of Portbury Wharf’. The second session takes place this month on April 9 from 9.30am, with two further events planned this year on July 23 and October 29. Aimed to inspire the next generation of budding wildlife photographers, whilst capturing the life of the reserve - a wetlands habitat situated on the land between Portishead and Royal Portbury Dock – parents are encouraged to bring their children along. Families will learn about composition techniques before enjoying a practical session out and about in the reserve. The images could then be included in the culmination of ‘A Year in the Life of Portbury Wharf’ project - a reserve guide, created for the community, by the community. Established wildlife author,

naturalist and photographer Iain Green will be leading the sessions. His career has seen him travel worldwide but he has now decided to set his sights on nature closer to home. Iain said:”I’m passionate about showing off the wild places we have on our doorstep and Portbury Wharf is a wonderful example of this. Annual Town Meeting Wednesday 7th May

he Annual Town Meeting will take place at the Folk Hall in Portishead High Street on Wednesday May 7 at 7.30pm. Every English town and parish must hold an annual meeting by law. This needs to take place between March 1 and June 1. It is NOT a council meeting but a meeting of registered electors, it should however be chaired by the chairman of the town council or the vice chairman. In their absence a chairman will be elected. The meeting is an opportunity for members of the local community to discuss town affairs. Electors can make suggestions and comment on issues within the town, they may also ask councillors present and other community group leaders, questions. The meetings usually last for a couple of hours. Any elector can speak and they do not need to make a prior appointment to do so. They can just turn up and take a turn to speak.

Councillors do not have to attend the meetings but as electors themselves they usually do. The meeting is a chance for them to say what they have been doing in the community over the past year. They will usually take note of issues raised at the town meeting and add them to a future council meeting agenda where appropriate. Minutes of the meeting will be taken by the town clerk or a deputy and a press table will be set out for any members of the press that attend. In Portishead it is quite usual for the Annual Town meeting to be followed by the town council AGM but this will not be the case this year. The town council AGM will take place on May 14, directly before the Portishead Town Council May meeting. Pictured: The Folk Hall, home to Portishead Town Council

challenge of my life this year where I will attempt to run 12 marathons between March and September on behalf of a friend’s seven-year-old son called Alex, who suffered from meningitis over a year ago. The marathons will begin in March with Barcelona and Rome, April will see Madrid, Brighton and London, May will include Milton Keynes, Copenhagen, Edinburgh and Stockholm. I will then take a three month break and finish in September and October with Berlin, Chester and finally Amsterdam. I wouldn’t call myself a born runner; it’s just something I like to do, I have only really been running for three years and have run two marathons before this. I have been training really hard for this adventure with the support of the Southville Running Club and use of The Hub Gym in Portishead. I have set myself a target to raise £5000 but would love to exceed this.” Alex became ill in early December 2012, he had been ill on and off for a week. He suddenly deteriorated so was taken by his parents to the BRI where he spent a week in Paediatric Intensive Care before being transferred to Frenchay’s Barbara Russell’s children’s ward. After spending Christmas in hospital he was eventually discharged on January 15 2013 almost a month and a half later. It took several days before meningitis was diagnosed and Alex’s mum knows how lucky they were that Alex has made

a full recovery. She said: “Alex had extensive physiotherapy, occupational therapy and language assistance to help recover and we have been told thanks to all the football he played he had a very strong core which certainly helped his recovery.” Alex is now playing football for his local team Portishead Juniors again and is also training with Bristol City and West Brom. His mum added: “He is very energetic, enthusiastic and a happy boy who loves nothing more than playing football in the rain!” To support Ben in his marathons to raise money for the charity Meningitis Now visit www. or to find out more Pictured: (Above) Ben PettiforSmith, who is preparing to run 12 marathons to raise money for Meningitis Now. Somerset Hall an ideal venue for all occasions

As nestled above the High Street lies one of Portishead’s best kept secrets. A multi-faceted venue, adaptable to any occasion or celebration, and above all: it won’t break the bank. Somerset Hall is a versatile venue available at a competitive price to hire for celebrations, conferences, theatre and weddings.  With a range of rooms and adaptable spaces on offer, the hall can accommodate an array of events. In cohorts with Marston’s brewery, Somerset Hall boasts a fully licensed bar and lounge area that holds up to 100 people, offering the perfect intimate space for parties or smaller gatherings.  The bar offers beverages to suit any occasion – from a flute of sparkling champagne to toast the future, to a pint of bitter to enjoy with a comedy night. Beyond the bar lies the largest room in the venue: the theatre hall, this comes complete with stage, sound and lighting.   Local performers, the Portishead Players, host all their productions at Somerset Hall throughout the year to great audience acclaim. This room also offers the option of

being divided into two, creating a smaller space for training and conferencing events. Recently Somerset Hall was granted a marriage licence, giving clients the opportunity to have their entire wedding ceremony under one roof. The hall’s large commercial kitchen give’s couples the option of either hiring caterers to cook on site, or to prepare their own food, making it suitable for all budgets. Outside a terrace adorns the length of the building which acts as an excellent sun trap in the summer months, making a perfect

space for BBQ’s and day-time events. Somerset Hall is a must-see venue for those planning an event. To arrange a tour contact Elaine Porch, Somerset Hall Manager, on 01275 848 059 or email,

Cattle Country gets the thumbs up! By Gordano Living’s Marie Eastwood

attle Country gets the thumbs up from my friends and family. Using the discount voucher in the February issue of Gordano Living a large group of us headed for the Berkeley based adventure park. It took just 30 minutes to get there from our Portishead homes, but if we are honest a day just wasn’t enough, there was so

much to do! The children headed straight for play barn one as soon as we arrived and didn’t want to leave! This was a great area for our large group, as parents could sit and watch all the children who were fearlessly going down the drop slide, zooming down the wavy slide and chasing around the indoor play area while the pre-schoolers happily played in the toddlers’ play area. Eventually we managed to prise all the children out of the barn and entered child heaven, aka the main field. The youngsters all ran in different directions jumping on swings and trampolines, climbing on to the castle, taking a try at mini golf and hopping on to a zip wire. Next there was fun to be had on huge inflatable jumping pillows

and a huge beach barn complete with toys and diggers; a real favourite! We also enjoyed a falconry display that involved interaction. Throughout the park there were plenty of picnic areas both covered and uncovered, areas for barbeques and a cafe. There was so much to see and do that we have promised to return during the Easter holidays so that we can experience the miniature train, animal encounters, boating lake, 40ft climbing net and the outdoor assault course. We can’t wait!

Viper Valet Expands

an Wakeford and Dan Ward have, through hard work and determination, built Viper Valets in to a vehicle valeting business that offers both commercial and private customers the very best in superior car valeting. They began in Clevedon before moving to Portishead, where they have established a thriving business at the front of the Portishead Tyre and MOT Centre at 160 High Street. Five years on and ready to expand, they decided on a return to Clevedon and have opened a new outlet in Kenn Road, on the former site of See It Gleam Valets. Both Dan’s are keen to reassure their existing customers, that this expansion will not affect the Portishead business and would like to take this opportunity to remind customers that although their car park may appear full at times, it is a shared parking area, so don’t be misled; it is worth calling in to speak to them. Viper Valets is keen to support a chosen charity each year and the 2014 cause is Alzheimer’s Research UK. The teams at both sites will be holding events throughout the year to support this important organisation. The guys are currently training hard for a Tough Mudder a challenging assault course event in August.

The Wedding of Claire and Marcus

laire Victoria Louise Donaldson married Marcus Trevellion Whitelaw at St Audries Park, West Quantoxhead, Taunton at 1.30pm on Valentine’s Day, February 14 2014. The Portishead couple say they had a splendid day, despite a few setbacks and it was made even more special by the efforts made by family and friends to be there on their special day. For those of you who don’t know, Quantoxhead is in Somerset and while it may have escaped some of the severe flooding, it didn’t manage to escape the high winds and storms. Claire said: “Despite the storms, our loyal friends braved the elements travelling from Portishead to St Audries to share our special day with us. Some guests were delayed after trees came down on their route and they had to take the long way around, but worse was to come. It was a very stormy day and we all got rather blown away, then there was a power cut after the evening reception leaving all the guests who were staying overnight without water, heating or lighting. With the power still down the next morning the wedding breakfast had to be cooked on a barbecue. Despite the hiccups we had a great time which was full of laughs and it is a day we will remember for so many reasons! We would like to thank everyone who came and hope they all had a good time.” Photography Claire and Marcus by West Photography, Portishead

Based on the classic Dickens’ tale of class divide and gangland culture in Victorian London, the young orphan, Oliver, is subject to scenarios most of which would be unimaginable today. What’s On Music and Dance for Everyone

said: “I saw Jill’s website and went along to one of her groups after a 20 year break from playing my violin. Her infectious enthusiasm, the wonderful traditional tunes and socialising with a lovely bunch of people make the groups the perfect way to unwind from a busy family life and stressful job. Jill has a fantastic ability to encourage people to have the confidence to have a go at things and through her I have found myself playing at all sorts of community events with the Highly Strung Community Band and I am now regularly playing for Ceilidhs and barn dances in a new band called Hot Punch. I really recommend going along to one of the groups.” In addition to her music groups Jill plays violin and sings, with Mark Wallis who plays button accordion, guitar and also sings, in The Perfect Cure band. They also play with other musicians in Highly Strung, a large traditional band

Jill believes that music should be something everyone has the opportunity to enjoy and you don’t need to read music as playing by ear is encouraged. Jill says: “How many of you used to play the recorder or started the violin at school? Come along to one of my music groups and see how much fun it can be now you are older and wiser!” Jill’s music groups encourage the playing of any suitable melody instrument in seven different groups run on various days at her home in Clapton in Gordano. Re-enchanting Easter

By Portishead Churches Together

n recent years Christmas has been getting bigger. I mean, the God-bit of Christmas - going to church and such. People feeling they want to reconnect with the realness and mystery underneath the tinsel, spending and parties. Easter seems pale by comparison. Apart from hot cross buns and chocolate eggs, we only have a few left-over church-based customs such as eating fish on Good Friday. Why isn’t it such a big festival as Christmas? After all, Easter Sunday is the most joyful day in the whole Christian calendar. Perhaps it’s because the Easter story is harder to break into bitesize chunks than the Christmas

story. But it’s just as exhilarating – if possible, more so. It’s a story worth grappling with, like Breaking Bad or The Lord of the Rings – huge in scope and full of insight into the human heart.

insight into what Easter’s all about, brought to you by Portishead Churches Together. Tickets £2.50 and family ticket £5 are available from Morgan Westley in Portishead High Street.

This April in Portishead there will be two events aimed at re-enchanting Easter for you. First, on Sunday April 13 at 6pm at Clarence House, 4Front Performance brings you the Gsus Story (guitarists will get it) – the story of Jesus’ last week on earth through the eyes and songs of a Jerusalem busker. A family-friendly hourlong performance, it’s funny, clever and heart-warming. A great way to prepare for the Bank Holiday and have a deeper

For many of us Good Friday could be renamed DIY Friday. If you’re heading off to Homebase be aware you can have your car washed as an Easter gift, courtesy of family teams, young people and energetic seniors from Portishead Church of England. Wondering what the connection is between Good Friday and a car wash? Come along and find out. Friday April 18, 10am – 4pm Homebase car park, Wyndham Way. Everyone welcome

Gardening and DIY doesn’t have to be painful

s spring arrives many people can’t wait to get out and tidy up the garden, or to do those DIY jobs around the house. However, a sudden launch in to activity can bring with it aches and pains associated with bending, twisting and lifting. Gordano Living talked to the team at Walnut Grove clinic about how to deal with these problems. “ In spring we see a lot of “generalised lower back pain” caused by people getting active after a long winter indoors. This type of pain is often caused by long periods of specific activity, bending, twisting to get in an awkward space and cutting the grass. It’s hardly surprising that muscles protest if you suddenly ask them to bend, squat and lift heavy things. This type of pain usually sorts itself out within 10 days to two weeks, but there are some things you can do to help it get better faster. Change the way you work – instead of

digging for an hour, dig for 20 minutes, prune for 20 minutes then return to digging for a further 20 minutes. If you experience pain, apply something cold an icepack is great but a pack of frozen peas will do, always wrap the cold item, never apply directly to your skin and leave it on for 10 minutes. If cold doesn’t help try heat, wrap a hot water bottle in a towel and

National Gardening Week

arden lovers will be getting set for National Gardening Week 2014, which takes place from Monday, April 14-Sunday, April 20. National Gardening Week launched by the Royal Horticultural Society aims to get the nation growing. During National Gardening Week, thousands of people across the country will come together to help keep Britain beautiful by sharing and celebrating everything about gardens and gardening. You can get involved by organising an event which can be anything from opening your garden to visitors or hosting a garden party in your local community garden or park, to running a gardening talk or demonstration in your garden centre, community hall, or other public space. Register your plans or find out what’s going on in your area by visiting www.

apply that for 10 minutes. Painkillers can help too, but be sure to take ones which are suitable for you. You should see an improvement within two to three days, but if any of the above suggestions aggravate the problem, if you experience leg pain or if you don’t see any improvement it’s a good idea to get some help. Our osteopaths and physiotherapists can assess and treat the problems and provide a variety of exercises and other options to help overcome the pain and prevent it recurring in future, allowing you to get back to all those jobs which still need doing!”

Gardening in April

Home and Garden

By Chris Baker Brackenwood Plant and Garden & Centre, Abbots Leigh

hank goodness for some long awaited sunshine in March. There’s nothing like that extra vitamin D to get you happy and motivated in the garden. April is a beautiful month for gardening. Trees are in blossom, tulips are flowering and our gardens are bursting in to life all around us. There is plenty to be getting on with, but be prepared. The warm sunshine and longer hours can soon change to heavy rain, hail stones and still some chilly nights. April is a month that can throw everything at us.

Spring into Brackenwood!

Trees and Shrubs Finish pruning your roses. Remove flower heads of winter flowering plants like azaleas and rhododendrons. Stop side shoots on fuchsias to produce bushy plants. Vegetables Sow your first carrots. Finish planting of late potatoes and earth up earlies. At the end of the month, plant cauliflowers. Start successional sowing of peas, beans, lettuce & radish. Fruit Ventilate strawberries under cloches & add straw manure. Cut back newly planted raspberries. Keep an eye out for pests!

Jobs for April • Leave spring bulbs at least six weeks after flowering before removing foliage • Give outdoor trees and shrubs a feed to encourage strong and healthy growth • Plant new trees, shrubs, perennials, alpines and evergreen hedges • Weed borders and mulch • Your grass will want cutting this month. Apply a quality spring feed, re-seed or re-turf damaged areas and if time permits scarify the lawn and remove dead thatch/moss to promote growth of emerging grass • Tie in new growth on climbers • Sow your greenhouse/frost tender crops such as tomatoes, courgettes and runner beans and keep them warm! • Plant fruit trees, fruit canes and bushes • Check grease bands around fruit trees and replace if required • Keep weeding!

Charity work leads Portishead man to a career change

ortishead painter and decorator Andy Bessant has launched his own company called Paint Pot, but the

circumstances that led Andy to set up his new company are not exactly run of the mill. Andy explains: “I have always loved painting and decorating and even find it relaxing, however whilst I would do plenty T of it at home or for friends and family, I had PrOior not really considered it being my career. We are lucky that PAInterio Contact Andrew on our son, who has received treatment for 07578830790 cancer over the past 18 months, is now in remission. He has received some great care and situations like this always make you feel you want to give something back. As a result I jumped at the chance to give my time free to help decorate a Grade II listed Victorian house for CLIC Sargent, a children’s cancer charity. enjoy decorating the house, I was amazed at the comments I received about my work. Both staff and visitors told me what a good job I had done and suddenly, following a career in this line of work seemed obvious. So, I enrolled for a City and Guilds course at the local college, which I worked hard at and here I am launching my own business. I can now boast experience and qualifications and have glowing references from a charity I am so pleased I can support. Ask the Vet Vet Shaun Taylor, from Vale Vets answers your questions I’m thinking of getting my dog microchipped, and am interested in how they work. Also, is it a complicated procedure and will it hurt him at all?

ot only is microchipping strongly recommended, it is also soon to become a legal requirement for all dogs in the UK. For the sake of a one-off small cost and a quick trip to the vets, it helps to protect your pet for life against theft and loss. For six months from April 2014, Vale Vets will be teaming up with The Dog’s Trust to supply free microchips to any dog owner who requests one. The tiny chip is injected easily and quickly into the skin of the scruff (back of the neck) just like a vaccination, and can be done in seconds with your vet or nurse. The chip has no electrical power, and contains none of your personal details. It is simply a dormant microchip, containing a long ‘barcode’ style number, which can be activated and read remotely through your pet’s skin by your vet. The number is registered with your contact details on a secure national database so should a chip be discovered on a stray animal, the database will be able to help reunite you with your pet.

If you have a question for me, you can submit it via our website at Just click on the Ask the Vet icon on our front page. We will print a selection in this column each month.

Easter trail to celebrate Fit Feet Week

s the Society of Shoe Fitters launches Keep Fit Week starting on April 12, family footwear retailer Solelution will be holding two weeks of activities to highlight the importance of looking after our feet. In a massive giveaway there will be prizes galore, with a number of activities including a design a shoe competition and an Easter trail. Keep Feet Fit week has been organised to remind us that wearing appropriate and well fitting shoes

is key to keeping healthy. The number of people suffering from complaints that can be attributed to ill fitting footwear is on the rise and these range from the obvious like bunions and hammer toes to the less obvious neck, back, shoulder, hip knee and leg pains. More worrying is that these conditions are being seen by GPs in patients at a much earlier age than ever before. Tanya Marriott, owner of Solelution, has organised a range of activities to enjoy throughout the Easter holidays, while also providing the opportunity to find out more about how to keep our feet in tip top condition. Trained staff are always on hand to measure feet and offer advice on shoe fitting, while other professionals will be happy to discuss a range of foot related complaints and how best to deal with them. One of the activities brought to you this month is the Portishead Easter Egg Trail. A map overleaf will help you complete the trail which provides the chance to win prizes.

Entry forms will be available from Solelution from April 5 - 21. It costs £1 to enter with the proceeds going to local children’s charities Springboard and Children’s Hospice South West. Using the clues provided, participants are invited to hunt in shops and businesses to find paper Easter eggs on display and answer questions on the entry form for return to Solelution when you have completed the trail. Prizes range from days out to meals for two, shopping vouchers and play activities.

Should women lift weights? By Claire Cleeves, Trainer, mum of two AND owner of hub. everybody’s gym, Portishead.

hat’s the million dollar question, and one that even women are divided about. Many women swear by lifting weights whilst others blanch at and are frightened of the idea of looking like “She Hulk”. So, what’s my answer? Well, if you want to burn fat, get in shape and feel great then lifting weights is absolutely something you should do. Why? 1. It boosts your metabolism - Lifting weights increases the number of calories your body burns every day, which means your body will be burning excess fuel and getting rid of stubborn body fat, even on your rest days! 2. It burns fat - If you don’t lift weights, you will never properly burn fat. Aerobic exercise is good for fat burning, but only to a certain extent. Eventually your body will start eating away at muscle tissue when you only do aerobic exercise and you won’t lose much fat weight. If you want to burn fat, you have to throw some weight lifting into the mix.

3. It burns calories - Want an excuse to eat a tasty treat? “I need it as workout fuel” is a great excuse for lifters. I encourage many of my clients to eat extra “forbidden foods” one day a week simply because they are loading up for an intense bodybuilding session the next day. Heavy lifting burns a whole lot of calories! The truth is that lifting weights is the key to healthy, effective fat loss. If you spend all day in a spin class, doing Zumba, practicing yoga or running on the treadmill, you will see weight loss, however, if you add weights in and complement with a high protein diet you will burn fat and tone your muscles. One of the most misleading and frustrating terms in our industry is “weight loss”, unless you are a professional athlete depending on weight classification. Pretty much all my clients initially want to “lose weight” and I quickly move the focus to “fat loss”. The scales are less important to me, it’s the focus on a leaner, harder body that leaves my clients satisfied.

I use a combination of High-intensity interval training (HIIT) body weight routines, heavy weights and a sustainable high protein diet to get results time and time again.

If Claire can do it so can you!

Exercise of the Month: Flat Bench Press. NOT! Every month top personal trainer Matt Bembridge, AKA Gym Professor, provides an exercise of the month for readers to try.

tarting an ‘Exercise of the Month’ article with a NOT joke is a little unorthodox, however, the reason is that almost everyone (certainly every man) who’s stepped foot in a gym has performed a Flat Bench Press. The Flat Bench Press is seen as a king among lifts and a supposed marker of physical prowess. I do not agree. I encourage you NOT to perform the Flat Bench Press for at least the next month. Instead, I’ll outline a couple of reasons which bring me to this conclusion and some alternate exercises to perform. First, for most, the rotator cuff (comprising four muscles - teres minor, infraspinatus, supraspinatus, and subscapularis - which in concert help to stabilise the shoulder) is the weak link during a Flat Bench Press. Therefore, the rotator cuff is prone to injury performing a Flat Bench Press - in particular, the supraspinatus muscle and/ or tendon, when reaching or driving out of the mid-position of a Flat Bench Press.

The risk is significantly increased if the weight is not lifted in a controlled manner i.e. trying to reverse the downward inertia caused by performing the movement too quickly. Secondly, although to complete a Flat Bench Press the arms return to their pressed position (perpendicular to the torso), the range-of-movement does not allow for fullcontraction of the pectoralis major (chest muscles). It’s quite short. Full-contraction is being achieved when the arm is drawn forward and across the body, not forward and out to the side. So, what do I recommend? Leave the ego at home. First, pick up some small weights and start training your rotator cuff regularly in order to increase mobility and strength. You can find exercises and workout ideas on the Gym Professor website. Secondly, with lighter weights than you’d typically press with, exchange the Flat Bench Press for Neutral-Grip Incline Dumbbell Press. You should find a lesser Block Book 5 Classes get 6th FREE!

Pure Results Fitness

By director of fitness Dan Meredith

Stop playing around…… That’s what we are often told as kids, but you know what? Just because we are grown ups, why shouldn’t we have fun? I will get to what this has to do with you in just a minute. Some people think that as personal trainers at Pure Results, we are only the preserve of the rich and famous; that we spend our lives in front of mirrors, covered in lycra and telling everyone they can’t eat carbs! This could not be further from the truth! Think about it, if I TELL you to do something, especially something that you DON’T want to do, and make the experience less than enjoyable…..what’s your natural reaction? Probably like most people….you will do the opposite! Our clients are JUST LIKE YOU; we have a mix of mums, business folk, students, nurses, computer geniuses, young, old, male, female, at all levels of fitness. It’s YOUR result that’s important, and it’s our job to get it for you. But personal trainers are expensive right? To be honest if you see us every day, of course we are! But that’s not what we are

suggesting. We are very good at what we do, and have been doing it for a long time. When you think about it, who would you want looking after your health and fitness? Someone who is new to the game, or someone who has done this for over 10,000 hours? We are the latter.

Now I mentioned having fun earlier, and I want you to! We want to help you get back a fit, healthy body AND enjoy the process! We realise that not everyone has the time, or the money, to see us as often as they would like.

So this month, for six readers, we are offering our one month ‘kickstart’ pack, with a little twist. Email or call us with the reference KICKSTART. We will get you fit, shift some weight, sort your nutrition out, give you a plan for you to follow AFTER the month finishes…. AND give you the equipment you need to do it without us….not bad hey?

Four weeks of personal training (eight sessions) Nutrition and diet plan Bespoke exercise plan One month’s supply of ‘Lean Greens’ advanced nutrition/weight loss formula OR Purition Breakfast Blend Suspension trainer (at home exercise equipment) Total package worth over £550, offer for six Gordano Living readers at £347!

ost of us experience headaches at some point, with some people suffering on a weekly if not daily basis. With many of us leading hectic modern lifestyles, with long commutes and days spent working to deadlines bent over computers, it’s no surprise that so many of us are suffering with headaches! The most common recurrent headaches are: tension headaches, migraines and cervicogenic headaches. The neck and shoulders can play a very important role in all three of these types of headache. Misalignments of the vertebrae and chronic tension in the neck and shoulders can refer pain into the head, typically felt at the base of the skull and around the temples and eyes. Headaches

arising from the neck are cervicogenic headaches and are accompanied by tension and discomfort in the neck and shoulders. Grinding your teeth and clenching your jaw can also contribute to the problem. After a thorough assessment our chiropractors will determine any musculoskeletal cause of your headache and develop a treatment plan to suit you. Treatment for headaches may involve gentle manipulation, muscle release, medical acupuncture, postural evaluation and home exercises and stretching. Whether you are a long term migraine sufferer or just going through a stressful patch in your life, chiropractic treatment may be able to help you.

he Beauty Rooms specialise in VPL hair removal using the Energist VPL system. This unique way of removing unwanted hair is quick effective and affordable. The variable settings mean it can effectively treat the different types of hair found all over the body, from thicker bikini hair to finer facial hair. The Energist VPL treatment uses short, safe, pulses of filtered light that are absorbed by melanin, the pigment found in hair. and take part in this year’s Bristol 10k on May 11 or the Bristol Half Marathon on September 21 to help support the charity’s vital sibling service. By taking part in either the Bristol 10k or Half Marathon and raising £1,500 of sponsorship, runners could fund a week of sibling support at Charlton Farm, while £214 would fund a day’s support. Runners will receive a fundraising pack, running vest, training plan and plenty of support. To find out more about joining the running team visit or telephone 01275 866600.

Decluttering the Brain By Rae Arundel of Harbourside Hypnotherapy

ld Stuff Day’ on March 2 was designed to raise awareness, a day to organise, and de-clutter our environments. But what about an environment that lives inside of us, that we sometimes don’t even realise needs a good clear out from time to time? Our brains! You know the old classic, whether the glass is half empty, or half full? Which way does YOUR thought pattern lean? If you lean towards the more pessimistic side, then it is likely that your brain could do with some serious de-cluttering. Negative thoughts can result in a cycle of negative behaviour, which attracts negative experiences, thus reinforcing the negative aspects of life. We need to learn how to manage our thoughts. When we master this skill, we notice the positive aspects of ourselves and our environment. We have balance, clarity and calm. Knowing how to identify which way your thought process leans is something that Solution Focused Hypnotherapy teaches you, helping to find a way into our intellectual minds, and we simply do this by learning how to de-clutter arbourside those thoughts, relax ypnotherapy and get the problem Specialising in: sorted out in a calm Sleep problems, Stress and Anxiety and relaxed way.” For more information Depression, Panic AAacks, call Harbourside Weight Management, Stop Smoking Hypnotherapy on 07584035873 or visit 07584 035873 Weston super Mare and Portishead
