Scarecrows take over Backwell

W

hile people in the area were going bonkers for the Gromit Unleashed Trail in Bristol and the surrounding areas, people in Backwell had some new residents around to spot themselves. The Great Scarecrow Trail, organised by St Andrew’s Church, Backwell, was a weeklong activity with the theme ‘occupations’. Eagle eyed people saw scarecrow policemen, builders and farmers lining the streets and popping up in people’s front gardens. The competition was free to enter and was preceded by a scarecrow making day at St Andrews. The competition results were announced at the church at the end of the week on a day that featured a service and cream teas.

obligation either way we want to explore all these ideas. “We want to gather like-minded people together and begin to think about where and how we could fund this project, as we are aware that generally money is quite scarce. “Having said that with so many enthusiastic youngsters and other supportive groups such as the local police ( PCSO’s), Nailsea School, and Community Opportunities in Nailsea (COIN), we are convinced it’s worth thinking through.” If you have any views on this or would like to be involved please contact Josh Howard josh.howard@htnailsea.org.uk.

BRITANNIA WINDOWS.co.uk

THINK tank has been set up to look at ways to improve Nailsea’s skate park in Millennium Park. For the last 12 years the skate park has provided a fantastic opportunity for many skateboarders, scooter riders, rollerbladers and BMX riders from around the area to practice and display their skills. Over that time however technology has moved on and the park has suffered from its fair share of wear and tear. This has prompted various discussions to take place over the last few months following the 11th Annual Community Skate Park Festival and the newly formed ‘Nailsea Skate Project’ to seek user’s views on a potential project to redevelop the park. Following an initial meeting it has been decided to take this on to the next step and to start to engage with the users of the skate park, before putting a briefing paper to Nailsea Town Council outlining some ideas, in order to decide what steps to take next. The ideas are at a very early stage and there have not yet been any formal discussions with Nailsea Town Council, or indeed North Somerset Council, but there has been quite a bit of discussion around the site with the park users. The Nailsea Skatepark Project (NSP) meets at the park every Monday at 4pm and has been set up by two local youth workers, Josh Howard and Neil Wylie, to engage with users of the park and also to organise occasional trips to other venues. Ideas range from carrying out a short term renovation project on the current park, to flattening the park and building a new concrete park on the same site. A more radical idea would be to completely rethink again about the park dimensions and rebuild in concrete. Phil Williams, organiser of the Nailsea Community Skatepark Festival, who is involved in this group said: “There are always so many youngsters using the park and a huge amount of enthusiasm for improving facilities, so without any

Backwell Community Resilience

W

hat if there is a power cut that lasts more than six hours? What if Farleigh Road floods? Or what if there is more snow this year than last winter? A Community Resilience Project, supported by North Somerset Council, has been set up so that Backwell residents can be prepared for any eventuality. Drop in at Backwell Parish Hall anytime between 9am and 12.30pm on Saturday, November 16 to find out more about the project. It’s all about local people with local knowledge and local resources. Everyone can get involved, with training provided as necessary. Perhaps you could be a warden for your street, knowing where the elderly or vulnerable live, or perhaps you simply have a generator that you could lend if needed. It can be as simple as that.

Backwell Baptist Church set to host the Bishop

M

embers of Backwell Baptist Church have been making the final preparations for the visit of the Bishop of Bristol, the Rt Revd Mike Hill on Thursday, November 21 at 7.30pm. The Bishop will be hosting an ‘Evening With’ event to include music and interviews in what is tipped to be one of the highlights of the church calendar. The visit of the Bishop is seen as a very special event both for the church and the local community as a whole. He is widely regarded as one of the best communicators in the Church of England today. Pastor Jeff Cockburn, Minister at Backwell Baptist, said: “Mike is an inspirational speaker and we are delighted that he will be coming to spend an evening with us at Backwell Baptist Church. This will be an informal, open meeting to which all are warmly invited.” The event is open to all.

exhibits on display, from refined pencil drawings to abstract pixilated portraits. A number of the young artists were proud to show their parents and friends their work and it was great to see so many people contemplating their creativity. What made this year even more special was the inclusion of KS3 work, in the form of a photography competition, judged by professional

photographers from the Rotary Club of Nailsea and Backwell. Congratulations to the winner Adam Goodwin, and the runners up Ellen Armstrong and Natalia Jarvis.

Community News North Somerset Arts employs Fiona

N

orth Somerset Arts is delighted to announce the appointment of its new Development Officer - Fiona Davies. The role that has received funding from the Arts Council of England is

the first of its kind for the artist led organisation. Fiona has taken up the position with a view to significantly increasing the role the arts play within the county. North Somerset Arts organises and promotes a whole range of events and activities to provide greater public access to the wide range of artistic talent the county has to offer. It has already been involved in numerous initiatives including a painting project with young offenders and an intergenerational story-telling event. Fiona, whose background includes working at the Royal West of England Academy, said: “By promoting and delivering a strong cultural offering in North Somerset I am confident that we will see a positive impact on the community. “I’m particularly looking forward to establishing new partnerships, reaching diverse audiences and seeing what creative avenues there are to be explored.”

North Somerset Arts evolved from the popular bi-annual North Somerset Arts Week, which was first hosted in 2003 and led by Annie Taylor. The Development Officer’s position marks a new era for the organisation, which had previously been entirely volunteer-led and the aim is to make North Somerset Arts a cultural hub for residents, artists, students, visitors, and business living and working in the region. The organisation aspires to become the ‘Go To’ establishment for all things creative and will focus on working in partnership with private, charitable and public sector organisations – reaching new and diverse audiences. Community News Family of former patient organises fundraiser for air ambulance charity

A

family from Nailsea is organising an event to raise funds for the local air ambulance charity that recently went to their daughter’s aid. On August 15 five-year-old Bella Mildon fell on a bouncy castle and was in immediate pain. Bella is severely autistic and non-verbal and therefore has no way to communicate her needs or feelings. Bella’s parents, Sam and David, dialled 999 and Great Western Air Ambulance( GWAAC) landed nearby and rapidly decided Bella had damaged her arm and needed potent pain relieving and sedative medication. They then flew her to Bristol Children’s Hospital.

They have organised a charity auction and Christmas craft market on Sunday, November 17 from 4-8pm at the Old Tickenham Garden Centre, Clevedon Road, Tickenham. It will include a hog roast, wine tasting, live music and a visit from Santa, as well as the auction itself at 5pm. A host of fantastic items will be available for bidding at the auction, including items contributed by Waitrose, Aardman, Cadbury Garden Centre, Bristol City Football Club and Bristol Zoo. Speaking of the incident, Bella’s mother Sam said: “David and I do not know how to express our feelings

of gratitude and thanks to the ambulance crew Neil and Scott and the rest of the team. “We will be forever grateful and if anyone is thinking of a worthwhile charity to support or to become involved in, I cannot think of a better one.” GWAAC is currently trying to raise £250,000 of additional funds for a new Eurocopter EC 135 helicopter which would attend to patients four minutes faster as part of a campaign called ‘Movin’ on Up’. For more information about the campaign, and to donate, visit www. greatwesternairambulance.com.

CHANGING LIVES

IN NAILSEA

HELP OTHERS THIS CHRISTMAS Please donate your unwanted household items, including furniture to us! Your kind donations really do make a difference and help others locally. Changing Lives was created to fundraise for Alabare Christian Care and Crisis Centre Ministries and profits are donated back to these charities and enable them to fund projects. Alabaré Christian Care and Support, www.alabare.co.uk, is a regional charity that works with homeless and vulnerable people across the South West and funds raised through Changing Lives go to Andrew House in Clevedon, a supported housing project for men recovering from drug and alcohol addiction. Crisis Centre Ministries is a Christian charity that helps the homeless and people affected by drugaddiction in Bristol and surrounding areas. They do this by running four main projects and for further information visit www.crisis-centre.org.uk. Changing Lives vision was to be able to provide a sustainable source of funding for both charities while at the same time being a place where they can develop the skills of local people. They have most certainly done that, and Jeff Peacock, chair of Changing Lives, has commented: “I am delighted that this joint venture between Alabaré and Crisis Centre Ministries has proved to be such a success. Changing Lives makes such a difference to the lives of so many people. “It has taken a lot of hard work from a lot of people to get to this point and I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone involved, without their support we wouldn’t be here today.” Changing Lives Nailsea opens Monday-Saturday from 9am-5pm and for more information

Telephone 01275 851041.

They accept a large variety of items including electrical, furniture (sofas and mattresses must have a fire safety label), books, clothes and textiles.

To donate, please call in or telephone the shop and larger items can be collected.

Make life for your eyes easier

What should we do about presbyopia? If reading is important to you, do something about it as soon as symptoms present. How do we correct presbyopia? As a visual task, we now read not only books, but also devices such as tablets and smart phones. Our near vision world is constantly changing. To my mind and all our optometrists at Lynne Fernandes it’s about how important vision is to your individual quality of life. If you are active and you want to be able to do things easily progressive lenses (varifocals) are the way to go. An analogy I like is shoes. If I go to the gym I wear gym shoes, if I play football with my boys in the park I wear cleated trainers, if I run, I wear running shoes with insoles. I know the right shoes make attempting fitness easier. It’s the same with eye wear, if your vision is important to you then good varifocals will make your life easier. If you only need glasses for near, then an indoor progressive will let you see print, a screen at arm’s length and even a colleague at the other side of a meeting table. Cost: how much should you spend? As an example a Zeiss varifocal is £111 (with Lens Club). This includes an anti-scratch coating, a reflection free coating and our warranty. We offer more economical varifocals, we often recommend premium varifocals. The key is talking to you about your lifestyle, your budget, explaining your prescription then you making an informed choice based on our recommendations. One point I would like to strongly make is that any progressive lens is a bespoke fit. That means that everything (your prescription, the frame choice/design, your face shape) matters. We pride ourselves in getting everything right. If you choose our Lynne Fernandes Optometrists in Nailsea Jo our Dispensing Optician Manager and her team Matt, Lauren and Mel will take great pride in dispensing glasses that you will be delighted with, whether they are Lynne Fernandes Optometrists, 63 High St., Nailsea, BS48 1AW - 01275 854 946 premium Lindberg designs or our budget ranges.

he clocks went back last week. That means a reasonable percentage of forty plus year olds will be noticing it’s harder to read in the dimmer light. Presbyopia is the medical name for long-sightedness due to the passage of time. It is normal and not a disease. It means that it becomes more difficult to focus on near objects.

Christmas tree lights switch on

T

he Christmas tree lights will be turned on in Somerset Square on Friday, November 15 and special local youngster Bella Mildon will help flick the switch to help give shoppers at The Crown Glass Shopping Centre a brighter Christmas. Five year old Bella and her parents Sam and David were nominated to turn on the lights by Great Western Air Ambulance, the centre’s chosen charity. Earlier this year, the Air Ambulance was called in to action to airlift Bella to hospital after she fell from a bouncy castle and badly broke

her arm. The lights will be turned on at 6.30pm and the Salvation Army Band will also be on hand to play seasonal favourites to help ensure visitors enjoy a happy Christmas evening. The centre’s Carols Around the Christmas Tree evening will take place on Friday, December 6 from 6.30pm. The Salvation Army band will lead choir singing around the tree and entertainment will include local craft stalls in Colliers Walk showing a range of unique Christmas gifts.

Countdown to Christmas

I

Celebrate this Christmas by giving someone a truly original gift

t sometimes feels like finding the perfect Christmas gift just gets harder each year. This year, however, Sally Skuse at Smallprint has made it easy with her fabulous range of original jewellery, which captures fingerprints, hand and footprints and even drawings and writing in fine silver. Just imagine mum’s face when she unwraps her present on Christmas morning to find a gorgeous silver pendant with each of her children’s unique fingerprints captured forever. And how proud would grandpa be to see his grandchild’s first signature on a fine silver key ring?

Smallprint, the original silver keepsake company, can help you capture those special milestones in beautiful silver keepsakes that you and your family can cherish forever. The exquisite selection of bespoke handcrafted jewellery, including pendants, charms, cufflinks and key rings, is guaranteed to bring delight to any living room on Christmas morning. Owner Sally believes that Smallprint jewellery especially lends itself to the festive season. She said: “We have always prided ourselves on being a family company and we know how precious family and friends are at Christmas.

To view Smallprint’s full range of unique keepsakes visit www.smallprint.com. You can also find them on Facebook at Smallprint Handcrafted Jewellery – Clifton and North Somerset.

Christmas Fair for NSPCC

A

group of local ladies are hoping to make a Christmas Fair at Tickenham Village Hall one of the best NSPCC fundraising events they have organised. The Clifton and Redland District Committee was formed approximately 28 years ago when a group of young mums decided to do some voluntary work. They selected the NSPCC as their beneficiary and formed a local committee. With members of the committee now living in and around the Gordano Valley, this year they have chosen to hold their Christmas Fair in Tickenham and they want it to be bigger and better than ever before. With an array of stalls, crafts and refreshments lined up, the ladies want to extend an invitation to everyone to join them at Tickenham Village Hall at 205 Clevedon Road, Tickenham, on Saturday November 2 between 10am and 4pm. Entry is free and there is plenty of car parking. There will be homemade jams, pickles, cakes, apple juice, Christmas cards, glass, textiles, ceramics, jewellery paintings, soaps, candles, chocolate, second hand books, near new children’s books and puzzles. There will also be face painting and a giant hamper raffle. To find out more or to book a last minute stall contact Sharron Baker bakersj@btinternet. com or Tel: 07887703881.

What's On Going Solo? An exhibition entitled Going Solo takes place at The Blue Room, in Crown Glass Shopping Centre in Nailsea, from Saturday, November 2-Saturday, November 16 to officially launch the arts and crafts gallery.

The Blue Room, which specialises in work by both established and new local artists, was reopened in August by Nailsea resident and businesswoman Sharon Brown as a social enterprise designed to serve the community. Ann Kelson, the exhibiting artist, is a mature student, a mother, and the wife and carer of a disabled husband. Although Ann’s work has featured in exhibitions in the South West and London, this is her first solo exhibition. The exhibition features Ann’s degree work and shows the development of several projects rooted in Ann’s experiences of frustration, loss, inheritance and life changing injury. Ann’s work will speak to anyone who

has ever endured the monotony of housework, the pain of losing a parent, a jumbled kitchen drawer, or a life-changing event. During the exhibition, and in the run up to Christmas, The Blue Room will be open Monday-Saturday from 10am-4pm. There will also be an opportunity to visit the exhibition on the evening of Friday, November 8 when both Ann and Sharon will welcome visitors between 6pm and 9pm. Everyone attending the exhibition will be able to enter a free draw with a chance to win a piece of Ann’s work.

Health & Beauty Cancer rehabilitation classes in North Somerset

C

ancer patients across North Somerset will soon have access to a specially designed exercise programme, thanks to Macmillan Cancer Support. Macmillan wants to ensure no-one faces cancer alone and this is just one of many projects set in the community to help cancer patients after their treatment ends. Kate Oldham, a qualified exercise instructor specialising in cancer rehabilitation, will co-ordinate the scheme locally. The specialised exercise programme will be tailored to the individual needs of patients recovering from the effects of cancer treatments. Kate, who has just completed the Tough Mudder challenge and raised more than £300 for Macmillan, explained: “Every cancer patient is different and this programme will

reflect that. Some patients want to prioritise getting fit to play sport again while others need help in day to day living, moving around their home, using the washing machine – anything that enables them to be independent.” The programme consists of a warm up, different circuit stations designed for both upper and lower limb exercise and a cool down period. Each participant is given an individual programme that is specific to them and will contain a mixture of aerobic and resistance exercise. All the programmes are designed to be a stepping stone back to physical activity, informal and fun. The classes will be run on a Tuesday in Portishead at the Jubilee Hall, Slade Road from midday and on a Wednesday in Clevedon at The Barn at 9.30am.

To find out more contact Kate between 9am-5pm MondayFriday on 07800 743305 or email info@mysimplesteps.co.uk.

Health && Beauty Health Beauty Community News Exercise of the Month:

Every month top personal trainer Matt Bembridge, AKA Gym Professor, provides an exercise of the month for readers to try. This month he talks us through Walking Lunges

Walking Lunges are a favourite exercise of mine; you can perform them anywhere and the effects on your legs and bum can be felt almost immediately. This is typically what we interpret or see performed in gyms and bootcamps: Keep your upper body straight, with your shoulders back and relaxed and chin up, assume a split-stance and lunge, return to Start-Position, then, step forward on the opposite leg and repeat. Firstly, is there any point at all in performing Walking Lunges over Lunges if you are to simply return to a leg’s spread Start-Position and, then, STEP forward? No. Your Start-Position for Walking Lunges is with your legs side-byside. Initiate a lunge with your right leg. At the Mid-Position, your right leg should form a right angle. Upon rising from the Mid-Position of the Lunge on your right leg, the foot of your trailing leg (left) should meet/ pass your standing foot at the top-of-themovement and, then, you lunge forward on your left leg and continue to repeat on opposing legs for the desired number of repetitions.

This is Walking Lunges! One of the key benefits of Walking Lunges: the Quadriceps, due to the increased load over your standing leg whilst returning from the Mid-Position to the StartPosition, remain fully-engaged for longer. Simply place your hand on the sides of your thigh and perform a regular Lunge and a Walking Lunge to make the comparison. This is also a great way to tell (with your hands, not just your legs) when you are performing Walking Lunges correctly, increase stability, and feel the crossover of rolls between the Hamstrings and the Quadriceps. Weights-wise, they’re just not required by most people when performing Walking Lunges correctly – the exercise is difficult enough. Should you wish to increase the weight/ difficulty, the mechanics of the lift means by simply leaning forward ever-so-slightly over your working leg will increase the load. Does this conflict with assuming the correct upper body posture? No. Keeping your back straight, shoulders back, and head forward, are correct in achieving the right posture, however, the typical

illustration of the upper body needing to be at 90 degrees to the floor during Walking Lunges is not necessarily so – consider a Squat or Deadlift which follows a similar instruction, your upper body does not remain at 90 degrees to the floor in order to keep your back straight (not curved!). So, there it is: the successful way to help you work almost every major muscle in the lower body. Who will inherit your house - your loved ones or the Council?

ew research, recently publicised by the Daily Telegraph, reveals that as many as three quarters of people going into residential care in old age might have to sell their home to pay for it. In England, individuals with assets in excess of £23,250 will be required to pay for their own residential care costs in most circumstances until their assets fall below this amount and to make a partial contribution until their assets fall below £14,250. Income is also taken into account by the local authority when assessing their contribution to long term care costs and only when someone’s estate is virtually exhausted will the local authority meet any part of their long term care costs. There are a number of ways to protect your estate; however, some may be less successful than others. Local Authorities have the power to

TO LET

set aside any gifts or transactions which were taken by someone to deliberately give away assets in order to avoid having to pay care fees. Some of the schemes on offer do fall foul of this regulation. However, for couples who would like to safeguard as much of the estate as possible for the next generation if the survivor of them had to go into care, there is a perfectly legal way of doing this by incorporating a trust arrangement in their Wills, no smoke screens required. Affinity Estate Planning, a member of the Institute of Professional Willwriters, is a local company specialising in Wills, trust arrangements and Lasting Powers of Attorney. If you would like to find out more, Affinity can be contacted on 01275 461970. Please quote “Living – LTC”.

Business End the 9 to 5! Every month Della Hudson of Hudson Accountants will be providing advice on helping you to get more out of your business. Yesterday I had two different mothers contact me for advice on returning to work after giving up conventional employment to focus on their young families for a few years. Last week at our Money Matters event I was speaking to another couple of professionals who had set up their own companies because they found employers too inflexible when it came to family life. The school gates of Britain are packed with wasted talent because employers are obsessed with the idea that work has to be 9 to 5 and in the office. Older people are giving up work before they want to rather than winding down gradually so that youngsters can benefit from their experience.

But it doesn’t have to be this way. None of our team work a full 35 hours

due to day release training or family commitments. Whilst they are usually office based we are able to give remote access to their hosted desktop so that they can work from anywhere in the world. The software and data remain securely with our expert hosts so there is no risk from laptops or USB keys left in taxis or wherever. This flexibility gives us the pick of good people as we found out with our latest recruitment and we have also benefitted because our staff were able to continue working through snow, floods and minor illness that made travelling difficult. Growing businesses don’t need to wait until they are big enough to recruit a full time team member but can recruit according to their needs with flexible contracts. There is at least one Bristol recruitment agency specialising in part

time roles. Depending on your business you may need some sort of IT infrastructure to work remotely and to track work between part time staff but so far we have only found benefits from flexible working. I really recommend that you listen to what your staff and prospective staff want out of their working life and then look at matching that to your business needs when you are no longer constrained by a 9 to 5 box.
