Critical time for Neighbourhood Plan

ackwell Parish Council is set to appoint a ‘Critical Friend’ to provide advice on its current Draft Neighbourhood Plan. The advisor will be a former chief planning officer and a member of the Department of Communities’ Panel of Neighbourhood Plan Examiners. They are being invited to comment on important aspects of the Draft Plan, in particular housing and business development, the designation of local green space and other key policies. Backwell residents were invited to have their say on the proposals on a Draft Neighbourhood Plan being developed by the Parish Council for the village for now until 2026. Due to possible revisions to North Somerset’s Core Strategy it is no longer possible to seek an early formal examination of the Plan, so the Council’s Steering Group has decided to take a little longer to refine the draft and then refer it to the ‘Critical Friend.’ Chris Perry, chairman of the Steering Group, said: ‘This expert advisor has had much valuable experience in this field and has agreed to act as a critical friend to the Parish Council and Steering Group. “His input will help us to achieve the best possible presentation when we reach the formal approval stages of the Backwell Future Plan later on.”

Community News Study hub launched to help students

study hub café has been launched in North Somerset due to the lack of library facilities on offer in the area. 21 West Café Bistro in West Town Road, Backwell, is offering up its premises as a place to study during the school holidays as the village has no permanent library. Manager Jayne Grocock set up the scheme to help students who are currently revising for their exams. Jayne said: “We want our young people to achieve the best results they possibly can to enhance their chances in life, so during the exam period and half term we will be supporting the youngsters and offering the cafe up as a safe, local place to study. “With no library facility here

in Backwell, we thought 21 West Café could offer all the ingredients needed for the students to maximise their studies. “Students receive a welcoming learning environment away from the distractions of home such as TV, siblings and the sofa, and can take advantage of our free Wi-Fi, sockets for laptops or IPADs, and clean toilets, as the village doesn’t even have public toilets.” Alice Cook, a Plymouth University student, is home on study leave and taking advantage of the study hub. She said: “It’s great to have somewhere like 21 West Cafe to come when I’m home from university.”

To keep students fuelled the café will also be offering student meal deals all day through half term week and 10 per cent discounts on all drinks. Jayne added: “Coffee houses have been associated with intellectual activity dating back to the 18th century when they were public meeting houses. “Studies have also shown that some students can improve their revision and study results by a change of environment.” For more information, visit the website or call 01275 463744.

Foul play message from council

6 Nailsea July 2013 AK.indd 6

ard hitting messages urging dog owners to pick up after their dogs are to be spray painted on pavements across North Somerset. The chalk based paint, which washes off following extensive rain, will be used to stencil messages in the worst affected areas. North Somerset Council is to spray paint the message: “Pick up your poo. We’re watching you” under a picture of a dog. Dog fouling is a persistent problem within North Somerset and the council hopes that this new initiative will help to encourage irresponsible dog owners to think again before leaving mess. Anyone who sees someone failing to clean up after their pet should report it to the council at www.n-somerset. or 01934 888 802. They should note the date and time, location of the offence and get a description of the dog and owner.

he 2013 Nailsea and Backwell Beer and Cider Festival will be celebrating its 10th festival this month. Since the first festival in 2004, which had a small marquee and served up 17 beers and 13 ciders, it has grown in size, last year serving 72 beers and 54 ciders. The event has raised more than £50,000 for local charities. Last year the festival attracted an estimated 3,000 people and raised £8,000 for St Peter’s Hospice. This year the event will run from Friday July 12-Sunday July 14 at Nailsea and Backwell Rugby Club, and festival committee chairman Paul Turner said: “Being our 10th festival, we want this to be a big party for everyone and try and make the festival a little different this year.” As well as the sale of more than 120 beer and ciders, all sponsored by local individuals and businesses, there will be live music on two purpose built stages featuring local bands on the Saturday and Sunday. Other attractions for all the family include a Kids Village on the Saturday and Sunday, with the usual face-painting, bouncy castles and games, as well as craft, charity stalls and food. Paul added: “The festival would not be possible without the support of our sponsors and we are really grateful to the sponsors who continue to help us each year and the new sponsors joining us this year. “The festival has grown substantially since we started. We are now finding this event is one of the first in people’s calendars and is becoming very popular and well known in the South West. new elephant enclosure at Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm, described as a five-star hotel for elephants, is nearing completion. The Elephant Eden facility, which cost £1.6million, was unveiled to the public last month and is having the finishing touches added to it before its new residents arrive. Recent visitors to the attraction, on Clevedon Road in Wraxall, have been able to have guided tours around the site, which has been built to three times the size of minimum zoo requirements. It features a huge elephant house, sand yards, an outdoor pool and 20 acres of land for the animals to roam in, making it the largest elephant

facility in the UK and one of the biggest in northern Europe. The revolutionary house is one of the first to be designed with both the elephants and keepers in mind and has a number of different sand yards so the females and males can be kept separately. It also has specialist lighting and an electronic food system from gantries which will see food lowered into the enclosure at random, to keep the animals stimulated. The zoo has recruited Sandra de Rek, an experienced elephant keeper from Holland, to manage the site and keepers will be using a protected contact method which rewards elephants for their co-operation. The huge outdoor space is divided up into fields and yards with a plantation of trees in one, a scratching post and a swimming pool, complete with water cannon. Elephants will have 24/7 access to the indoor and outdoor areas, while special visitor viewing galleries will provide areas for keepers to present

practical demonstrations close to the public. The environment and modern facilities will help enrich the animal’s welfare and lives and the zoo hopes to breed them, hoping to have up to 10 elephants in the future. Elephant Eden will also become one of the greenest zoo exhibits in the UK as it will be run on renewable energies – solar roof panels and a bio-fuel burner for heat.

Community News Waitrose Nailsea sow the seed

hildren at Ravenswood Key Stage 2 School learned how to grow and tend plants thanks to Waitrose Nailsea Partners Sarah Knights and Denise Turton. Sarah and Denise are part of the Community Matters Pillar Group in the branch. They visited the school with seeds of tomatoes, lettuce, courgette, peppers, beetroot and peas and gave an informative talk. The teachers and children were very excited about sewing the seeds and will buddy up with the older and

more able children to help with the planting and care of the seeds. They already have a green house and vegetable area on site, where they have grown tomatoes and lettuce and they are planning to sell the produce at

Volunteers wanted for scouts

couts leaders in North Somerset are looking for adult volunteers to help meet the demand for places. There is a long waiting list of children hoping to join the movement but who cannot due to the fact that there are not enough adults to lead new groups. The Gordano District Scouts Group covers Nailsea, Backwell, Clevedon, Portishead, Long Ashton and Yatton and caters for more than 12,400 youngsters. Anyone interested in volunteering can find out more at and a district commissioner application pack can be requested from Neil Salter by emailing

their summer fair. Sarah said: “It was one of the best experiences I have had in a long time, it really was lovely to see such happy and smiley children and dedicated teachers. Other schools involved included St Francis in Nailsea and Mary Elton in Clevedon, with students coming into the branch and sampling some unusual produce, having a behind the scenes tour and finishing with a large fruit salad. Students were presented with their seed packs and all of the named schools are hoping to return to Waitrose Nailsea and sell their produce outside the main doors before they break for the summer holidays.

group who help to maintain parkland spaces in Nailsea are appealing for more volunteers. The town is extremely fortunate to have a variety of woodlands, grasslands and open spaces which can be enjoyed by all members of the public, young and old, absolutely free. The area was recently awarded the Green Flag. If you enjoy being outdoors or have a fascination for wildlife, plant life or

local geology, you may be interested in joining the Friends of Trendlewood Park, who work closely with North Somerset Council. Workdays are held on the first Sunday and third Tuesday of each month between 10am-1pm with the next being on July 16, the last before a short summer break. The group will be using Austrian scythes to cut some of the tall grass around the park later in the summer

and training can be provided in the use of the scythes to new volunteers. Following their successful Easter Egg hunt, the Friends will be looking to plan more fun and educational events to help visitors learn about and enjoy these special spaces. Community News Parent Masterclass at Nailsea School

ailsea School welcomed parents of Year 4, 5 and 6 students to experience what learning is like in the 20th Century during a Parent ‘Masterclass’ last month. Parents were with students as they experienced a range of subjects exactly as their children do – activities and learning strategies that showed how different school is today. Each group experienced at least one core subject of either, English, Maths or Science and a range of Technology, Art and

Humanities subjects. Each ‘lesson’ was a maximum of 20 minutes and provided an insight into the learning experiences of young people in Nailsea School. Trudy Jones, assistant headteacher said: “The evening gave parents

a real insight into how learning happens in our classrooms today.”

Parents will have the opportunity to ask questions about entering the school when they come to the school’s Open Evening on Tuesday, September 24.

New foodbank in town for rising demand

new food bank is set to open in Nailsea to help cope with the increasing demand from people struggling to feed their families. Volunteers at the Clevedon food bank, which is a completely confidential service and run in partnership with Churches Together in Clevedon, fed 546 people from May 2012 to the end of December and statistics indicate that this year that number will double.

With food poverty widespread the Nailsea foodbank will operate from Southfield Church and another distribution point is being sought for Yatton with the support of Yatton Parish Council. Paul Gale, chairman of Clevedon foodbank steering group, said: “These figures are really shocking. It is particularly sad to see the families who are being referred to us for help.

“It is often the case that, even though parents are working, the family income is so low that something like the increase in fuel costs or an unexpected bill can plunge them into crisis.” Clevedon foodbank can be contacted on 07722 769529 or

Hot Tubs from Bristol HotSpring S ince the time of the ancient Greeks, people have found natural healing powers in bubbling pools of hot water. Through the ages, the Romans, Greeks, Japanese and other cultures have realised its many benefits through spirit, mind and body. Hot tubs can create the same effect. The heat, buoyancy and massage found in the warm, soothing waters of a hot tub create an experience that is both relaxing and rejuvenating. Sit back and relax in your hot tub and feel the power of the hydromassage. Whether it’s to unwind from the complexities of everyday life or to soothe sore muscles and joints caused by sports or minor strains, here’s how a hot tub hydromassage can help you feel better - naturally.

Muscle pain relief: Warm water engulfs the body and loosens muscle tightness. Arthritis relief: Water makes the body buoyant and allows free movement of the joints with up to 90% less weight when the body is immersed in water. Insomnia: People who relax in a hot tub for 15-20 minutes before bed time are more likely to enjoy a deep and peaceful sleep. Joint pain: Warm water in a hot tub will dilate the blood vessels to relieve painful symptoms. Stress and general well-being: People who use hot tubs and spa facilities regularly enjoy a feeling of rejuvenation, and relaxation that only hydrotherapy can bring. Spa treatments are good for the mind and the soul, and reduce stress and anxiety. Quality family

time: Rather than spending evenings in front of the television, getting the family together in the hot tub is a great way to spend quality time together and bond.

WAXING is the most popular method of hair removal as it’s quick, efficient and effective. I would recommend GUINOTS STICK HAIR WAXING SYSTEM the wax is designed to cling to the hairs not the skin resulting in a better finish and longer result. Want your hair to be removed permanently? Get fit for the summer

he sun’s shining and lollies and barbecues are beckoning. Do you wish you’d lost a few pounds ready for the summer? Well it’s never too late and the best thing about losing a few pounds is that it can reduce your risk of high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes. Many people begin the summer season with a goal to lose weight and, while that can mean eating a healthy balanced diet it also means more exercising. You can incorporate more physical activity into your daily routine in a number of ways and the exercise needed to help you lose weight and keep it off can be as simple as doing more walking or going for bike rides. Why not get off the bus a stop earlier to or from work and walk the rest of the way? If you have a dog you could extend your walk time too. Use the stairs instead of a lift

whenever you can and on weekends why not plan active outings instead of going to the pub.

eath  eauty Community News Exercise of the Month:

Russian Twists

Every month top personal trainer Matt Bembridge, AKA Gym Professor, provides an exercise of the month for readers to try. This month he talks you through Russian Twists

Here’s another “old-school” exercise that most people will benefit from by performing regularly: strengthening your core and helping to avoid against injury: Russian Twists. Many day-to-day activities and/or sporting endeavours involve a rotational movement of some kind. It stands to reason that mimicking such a movement under load in a controlled manner within our exercise regimen is advantageous when it comes to replicating it in a “real-life” circumstance. As most sports involve this rotational movement whilst standing, many sports coaches will suggest performing rotation exercise in a standing position. Personally, I prefer to advise that it be predominantly performed whilst seated, as is common with Russian Twists. The reason, concentrate on trunk rotation and therefore avoid against additional stress on the tendons and ligaments surrounding the knee complex. Here’s how Russian Twists are performed: 1) Select a suitable weight (dumbbell, weight plate, medicine ball, bottle of water, etc.). 2) With the weight rested against your thigh, sit on the edge of a bench or chair. 3) Using both hands, curl the weight from your thigh in order that your forearms are parallel to your thighs and the floor, with your fists pointing forward. [Side note: Rather than increase the weight to increase difficulty, you may

choose to extend your arm at the elbow joint (outstretched) so that your forearms and upper-arms are parallel to the floor]. Lock this arm position. This is the StartPosition. 4) Inhale. Then, exhale as you twist in a controlled manner to one-side, fully contracting your Obliques muscles. This is the Mid-Position. You should keep looking forward throughout. 5) Return to the Start-Position and inhale. You may choose to repeat the movement on the same side, then swap sides, or, twist from side-to-side (pausing in the middle for inhalation). Using a dumbbell (preferable) for this exercise, I choose to slip my favoured Globe Gripz on to the dumbbell shaft, interlocking my fingers around a single globe. ome  aren Help your home – and the homeless too

ith the popularity of programmes like Grand Designs, Location, Location, Location and Homes Under the Hammer, what a house looks like both inside and out has never been in the spotlight so much. Many people will not have had their property looked over by an expert, but a scheme run by the charity Shelter means that you could have a consultation with an architect while also helping the homeless. Called Architect in the House, this is a joint charitable initiative by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and Shelter, the housing and homelessness charity. Homeowners can receive an hour consultation with an RIBA chartered architect in return for a donation to Shelter. Whether it’s inspiration for a study, an extra bedroom, or just better living space you need, a chartered RIBA architect can offer creativity and professional advice that will help bring your ideas to life.

Local chartered architect Doug Fowler of Clevedon has signed up to take part and said: “I have been supporting this scheme for more than five years and have helped contribute to the great work carried out by Shelter in the process. “I urge anyone in North Somerset who is thinking of undertaking work on their home, to use an architect who has signed up for Architect in the House. We can help people unleash the potential of their homes while helping those with more significant housing problems.” Shelter estimates that more than 650,000 households in Britain are overcrowded, affecting more than one million children in England alone. The donation will go towards Shelter’s work to help all those living in conditions that have a devastating

effect on family life and children’s safety, health and education. Homeowners can register for their consultation by visiting www. They will then be matched to local RIBA chartered practices and architects best suited to meet their needs.

It is also a great time to sit out with friends and enjoy your garden, but before you can you need to make sure it’s looking its best. Here are a few jobs to keep you busy and get it in tip top shape for the summer. Make sure you keep new plants well watered and hoe off weeds, which thrive in the sunshine and place conservatory plants outside now that it’s warm. Water tubs and new plants if dry, deadhead bedding plants and repeat-flowering perennials to ensure continuous flowering and pick courgettes before they become marrows.

Sow and plant Autumn-flowering bulbs now and start collecting seed from plants you want to grow next year. Mow the lawn regularly and set the motor to a slightly higher level than normal for early summer to prevent the lawn drying in hot weather.

A Very Brown Hedge Indeed!

Aphids are one of the commonest and most troublesome of all garden insect pests. They attack a large number of garden plants throughout the country and recently have been causing much disfigurement to ornamental Conifer hedges. Commonly referred to as Greenfly and Blackfly these aphids feed on hedges, sucking the sap of the plant and can spread several viruses, causing severe die back. The current troublesome aphid is the Cypress Aphid which predominantly affects Conifer hedging. The damage inflicted on conifer hedges by the aphid Cinara cupressi is severe and can lead to large brown patches on the hedge which leads to localised foliage death, reducing the aesthetic look of the hedge. As the aphid is active from May to October it is important to catch this problem early and apply treatments to stop its spread. At the first sign of brown patches telephone Bartlett Tree Experts for a free consultation and professional advice on 01275 371000. a complete and comprehensive tree care service since 1907

ome  aren Maintain the perfect pond this summer

istening to the sound of running water in a pond is great when spending some time in the garden in the summer. It can be a great stress-buster and help you relax and a pond will also attract some wildlife too. But to make sure it remains at its best you need to give it some tender loving care each week over the hot summer months. The water level in ponds will drop during hot weather so top up regularly and any pumps on water features should be left on during

sultry nights, as oxygen levels are lower. Keep your pond clean and debris free, particularly for the fish and wildlife that may be in it. Keep the surface of ponds clean by removing floating weeds, dead foliage and blooms from waterlilies and other aquatic plants and clean out debris at the bottom as it will improve the water quality. There are many different types of algae that can cause problems in ponds and you can reduce their spread by using rainwater instead of tap water to top them up. Garden centres sell algaecides which can be

applied to ponds to clear up algae. To make your pond look attractive plant care is also important. Remove any dead or dying leaves of pond plants which can rot and discolour the water in your pond. Trim and cut back any marginal plants that are getting out of hand and check around the edge of the pond and among plants for any garden weeds and pull them out.

s a car enthusiast I have driven many high performance vehicles over the years but none come close to the totally and awe inspiring capabilities of the latest M5 which I have had the pleasure of driving for the last couple of weeks. The car takes everything that made the old M5 a pain to live with every day and corrects it all in one go. It is mega fast even in comfort mode with a power train like no other I have driven largely, down to the amazing dual clutch semi auto gearbox mated to the 4.4 litre V8 twin turbo engine putting out 552 bhp and 501 lb ft torque. Others produce similar performance figures such as Porsche and Mercedes but none delivers in the manner the new M5 does. It is round capabilities this is the car to have. In my opinion it’s the most responsive turbo charged car I have ever driven one of the best cars in the world today! with a 0-60 mph time of 4.3 seconds and a 0-100mph in a To see this amazing car or arrange a test drive visit your little under 9 seconds onto a top speed limited to 155mph. local BMW dealer, Dick Lovett (Bristol) Ltd BMW Dealer, What stands out against its competitors is the power Cribbs Causeway, Bristol, delivery as it delivers all its torque from as little as 1,500 Tel 0117 905 0000. to 5750 rpm onto a red line at 7,400 rpm. usiness The Art of Delegation (or how to get more done) Every month Della Hudson of Hudson Accountants will be providing advice on helping you to get more out of your business. As I write this we are waiting for the guests to arrive for my daughter’s birthday party. She has decided the guest list, food and party games herself. She has baked and decorated her own cake. She has shopped for party food and prizes with me serving as chauffeur and banker. I have kept a watchful eye but avoided interfering. There is a time in every business when there is more work than the owner can handle alone. This may be the time to recruit or to outsource. Each of those is more than an article in itself but, once you have the person in place, you need to start to delegate. This doesn’t just mean passing on the work you hate (I love baking) or standing over somebody worried that they might not perform to your high standards (in my opinion there was a surfeit of gold spray-on icing, white chocolate and silver balls) but passing on as much as possible that doesn’t

NEED to be done by you (a few years until my daughter can drive herself ).

The process is the same in business and parenting: 1. Start by putting the system in

place through simple instructions (make a list of your guests, what do you need to write on the invitation etc) or by example (we have almost the same party food each year) 2. Stand back and leave the other person to get on with it 3. Check the results (are all the necessary details on the invitation?) 4. Praise the good things and clarify the instructions for anything that wasn’t quite right

The result? 1. A cake with “bling”

2. You will find yourself with more time to concentrate on the things that only you can do. Like a sea captain you will be able to steer your business ship with a better view from the bridge than from the engine room 3. My daughter now feels much more grown up than the extra birthday candle might indicate. Perhaps your employees will also flourish with something new.
