Lions’ charity golf day

ollowing their highly successful annual golf day, Nailsea Lions have presented a cheque for £1000 to the Jessie May Trust. Fourteen teams battled it out at the Mendip Springs golf course. The eventual winners were local company Amber Management and Engineering Services Ltd, followed closely by another local team, from Mendip Carpets. The winning team, of Barry Mansfield, Andrew Ulloytt, Hugh Briggs and Jim Long, were each presented with a bottle of scotch and an engraved tankard by Emily Lynch, of the Jesse May Trust. In making the presentations, Emily thanked the Lions and all the participating teams for their generosity, as the Trust relies entirely on voluntary donations. The Jessie May Trust is a local charity which aims to ensure that every child who is not expected to reach adulthood receives nursing care within the home. Through its team of dedicated Children’s Nurses and Nursery Nurses, the Trust provides specialist care and support to both the child and the family, in the comfort of the family’s own home whenever possible.

ommunt es Celebrity croquet evening goes down a storm

ellspring Counselling hosted their fundraising Croquet and Pimms taster evening at Nailsea and District Croquet Club last month which attracted many friends and supporters to try some summer croquet and enjoy some al fresco picnic refreshments. Celebrity guest of honour of the evening was Tim Brooke-Taylor, of I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue and The Goodies fame, who was in the capable hands of retired broadcaster Chris Serle, of Points of View and That’s Life. Chris is a Wellspring trustee and organised the successful event. Along with some 60 guests, friends and supporters everyone enjoyed a relaxed introduction to the game of golf croquet, thanks to croquet club members, helped along by a refreshing glass or two of Pimm’s. Afterwards there was a well supported champagne raffle, with many prizes donated by businesses in the Bristol area. As a registered charity, for more than 19 years Wellspring has provided the communities of Nailsea, Backwell and surrounding villages with affordable and professional counselling for young people and adults. Tim and Chris were thanked by Rev Mandy Briggs, the Chair of Wellspring, for helping to make the evening a success.

Think you know Rotary? Think again

otary group the Nailsea Miners are launching a recruitment drive to show that Rotary is not just for retired men, as many people think. If you wander into the Dungeon Room of the George at Backwell after 8pm on a Tuesday evening you won’t find men in suits with funny handshakes or even speakers on assorted subjects. Instead there will be a group of 20-50 somethings reporting their progress on whatever charitable event they are working on at the time. Della Hudson, chairman of the group, said: “The local Rotary Group of Nailsea and Backwell do a lot of good work in the community but sadly Rotary has a stereotyped image as a dining club for retired men and most groups are struggling to attract younger members. “We want to take the best of Rotary and work together to support local charities in a way that suits younger people.” Once a month they share a sociable meal with partners and friends invited along too. Forthcoming activities include a beetle drive, another Quiz with a Twist and, by popular request, there will also be another brewery trip. If you are interested in learning more about Rotary or any of these events, contact Della Hudson 01275 406287 email info@, or visit www.nailseaminers.

olden Valley Primary School pupils got a lesson in healthy eating thanks to Waitrose Nailsea. Waitrose Nailsea volunteers spent a morning promoting healthy eating and pupils were invited to the store to participate in fun tastings of healthy food, focusing on eating a healthy diet. This was followed by a tour of the

branch locating the fresh produce and the different healthy foods that are on offer. A goody bag was given to the students to mark this memorable experience and as a reminder of healthy eating. The activity formed part of the Waitrose ‘Partner Volunteering’ scheme, which gives Waitrose staff

the opportunity to take time out of their day-to-day roles to volunteer for charities and projects in their community.

Somerset Freemasons support Great Western Air Ambulance

he Somerset Freemasons have donated £2,000 towards a campaign to get the Great Western Air Ambulance a new helicopter so they can continue their invaluable life-saving service. Their existing air ambulance is the oldest Air Ambulance still in service in the UK, having been designed in the 60s and is slow, small and not too secure. The campaign is to raise £250,000 towards leasing a new helicopter which will be four minutes faster from

the Bristol base to the scene of an incident in North Somerset. On average, an Air Ambulance is scrambled every ten minutes in the UK and this critical cutting of travelling time could save lives. These operate almost entirely from donations such as the Freemasons’ Grand Charity as well as the general public. Richard Ellis, on behalf of all Somerset Freemasons, said: “Somerset Freemasons are proud to be able to

provide this support for such a vital service which ‘takes the hospital to the incident.’ “We recognise the increased importance of supporting vital services such as this.”

ommunt es Beavers get free tennis experience at local club

ailsea Beavers were given the chance to emulate their favourite Wimbledon stars after a local tennis club opened its doors for free tennis sessions. With Andy Murray finally ending Great Britain’s 77 year wait for another Wimbledon champion it’s hoped that youngsters all around the country will be inspired to pick up a tennis racket. Youngsters from the 2nd Nailsea Scout Group attended Nailsea Lawn

Tennis Club, located at Mizzymead Recreation Centre, which gave them the opportunity to get on court and test out their tennis ability with free coaching. Many of the kids were picking up a racket for the first time and received expert advice from club coach

Haydn Benney. Haydn said: “It was really great to see a group of young players taking to the court with such enthusiasm, especially as some of them had no previous experience playing tennis. “At the end of the session they all wanted to keep on playing tennis so hopefully they will now pick up a racket more often.” The session is the start of an initiative to get more youngsters from Bristol and the surrounding area playing tennis more often. The classes at Nailsea are set to be rolled out to local youth groups and schools during the summer.

weltering sunshine meant the 2013 Nailsea Carnival and Fair was packed for another year. Organised by the Friends of First Nailsea Scout Group (FOFN) on behalf of Nailsea Town Council, the popular event started with the carnival procession through the High Street and finished at the Millennium Park, Scotch Horn where there was a traditional fair. The family fair included a fun fair, games, refreshments, stalls, a car boot sale and for the first time, live musical entertainment on the main stage.

rown Glass Shopping Centre is giving one lucky entrepreneur the chance to win a shop – free for a year. The innovative competition to win Unit 15 in Colliers Walk for a year, free of rent and rates, is open to residents of North Somerset aged 18 and over and the prize is worth more than £25,000. In addition, they will receive free mentoring help and support from local financial, banking, retail and marketing experts. The competition is part of a drive by Crown Glass landlords Ellandi and Development Securities to encourage local people to establish businesses in Nailsea. Ellandi founding partner Mark Robinson said: “Crown Glass is doing well and has attracted a number of key national brands in recent times, including WH Smith and 99p Stores. “We are just as keen that the

centre maintains a range of local independent retailers and hope this competition will help someone to take their first step in retailing.” Competitors need to complete and return an entry form before the closing date of Wednesday, July 31. Shortlisted entries will then be invited to present their idea for a shop to a panel of local business people. Entry forms are available on Facebook at crownglassshopping, from the Centre Management office at 1-2 Crown Glass Place, or via Ontrac on 01275 850900.

Road improvements to continue

orth Somerset Council has begun a programme of road improvements in Nailsea and Backwell by surface dressing a number of routes. Works were completed in May to repair areas of carriageway, ahead of the surface dressing programme the work will be carried out in Nailsea on Nailsea Moor Lane, Netherton Wood Lane, West End Lane and Yougwood Lane. Then in Backwell on Hillside Road and Backwell Hill Road. Councillor Elfan Ap Rees, North Somerset Council’s deputy leader with responsibility for highways, said: “Surface dressing is a cost effective way of maintaining, restoring and extending the life of the road surface. “Surface dressing, along with planned road resurfacing, are more cost effective methods than pothole filling and are the council’s preferred way of improving the road network.”

Feature Help change lives in Nailsea

Having recently celebrated their third anniversary in Clevedon, Changing Lives has opened up a new shop in Nailsea. Located at Unit 10, Clevedon Walk and next to Waitrose in the shopping precinct, the shop continues the Changing Lives tradition of selling high quality second hand goods including furniture, clothing, brick-a-brac and electrical items. Changing Lives in Clevedon was created to fundraise for Alabare Christian Care and Crisis Centre Ministries and profits are donated back to these charities and enable them to fund projects. Alabaré Christian Care and Support,, is a regional charity that works with homeless and vulnerable people across the South West and funds raised through Changing Lives go to Andrew House in Clevedon, a supported housing project for men recovering from drug and alcohol addiction. Crisis Centre Ministries is a Christian charity that helps the homeless and people affected by drugaddiction in Bristol and surrounding areas. They do this by running four main projects and for further information visit Changing Lives vision was to be able to provide a sustainable source of funding for both charities while at the same time being a place where they can develop the skills of local people. They have most certainly done that, and Jeff Peacock, chair of Changing Lives, has commented: “I am delighted that this joint venture between Alabaré and Crisis Centre Ministries has proved to be such a success. Changing Lives makes such a difference to the lives of so many people. “It has taken a lot of hard work from a lot of people to get to this point and I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone involved, without their support we wouldn’t be here today.” Changing Lives Nailsea opens Monday-Saturday from 9am-5pm and for more information telephone Tel 01275 851041. They accept a large variety of items including electrical, furniture (sofas and mattresses must have a fire safety label), books, clothes and textiles. To donate, please call in or telephone the shop and larger items can be collected.

Backwell School celebrates outstanding Ofsted

ackwell School has celebrated its second outstanding Ofsted inspection in a row. A team of inspectors visited the school and sixth form earlier this year and were so impressed they gave it the highest rating, Outstanding, in all categories, including achievement, behaviour and safety, teaching and leadership. It is even more impressive considering the school was judged to be outstanding in 37 of 39 categories in the last inspection in November 2008. The standards expected by Ofsted for schools to be Outstanding are now even higher and more challenging under the current inspection framework, making Backwell School’s achievement even better.

Students remaining in school had the week off timetable and a week’s break from wearing school uniform. The theme for this year was ‘I Have a Dream’ to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King’s speech. On Monday students used maths to investigate probability and chance, used their technology skills to build and fly kites, and undertook team building exercises with the creative use of scaffolding planks and milk crates. Tuesday saw students exploring themes around world and personal aspirations using art, media and music. On Wednesday and Thursday students opted to go on a

duaton Shopping for school shoes Advice from Tanya Marriott, owner of family footwear shop SoleLution in Portishead

hopping for correctly fitted school shoes can be a laborious task, especially as the children would usually much rather be out playing! BUT it is important! Children wear their school shoes from Monday to Friday, for at least seven hours a day. Here are some tips to help make the whole experience a little less painful. • Be prepared to wait. Unfortunately this is our busiest time for children’s shoes. We like to give each family the best service we can and that includes those in the queue ahead of you! First thing in the morning and late-afternoon tend to be quieter. • Come prepared – don’t forget to bring socks, although we do have some in stock. • Your child’s feet are likely to grow over the

summer holidays, so although we don’t advise leaving it to the last minute, it may not be advisable to buy in the first few days of the holidays. • No challenge is too great! We stock a wide range of brands, including Start-rite, Angry Angels, Hush Puppies, Ricosta, Geox and Pediped, from a junior size 7 to an adult 8 for girls and a 10 for boys in most width fittings. We can order from most of our suppliers, if we can’t find a fit from stock. • Ask the child to wear them around the house to make sure they are comfy, but remember, keep the box and receipt. If you’ve any

concerns, come back. We are more than happy to have another check. • Once everyone’s happy, put on some polish and wear them in. Remember their feet may have been in trainers or sandals for six weeks and won’t like being back in school shoes straight away. SoleLution also like to give something back to you through their loyalty scheme and to the schools via their School Voucher Scheme - every pair of shoes for schools means a £1 donation to your school.

Stagecoach students get top marks

tagecoach students from North Somerset were awarded top marks in their recent performing arts exams. Administered by Performing Arts Awards, the exams measure a student’s individual achievement in singing, dance and drama skills during a timed performance with their peers. Principal Heidi Hollis said: “Our results are astonishing.” Every one of the 93 students entered earned well above the standard pass mark. “Sixty-three were awarded merits, showing strong skill, and 30 were awarded distinctions for excellence in the performing arts.” “I’m especially proud of our eldest students. Rosie and Taynee took on a huge challenge with Grade 6, and they both got distinctions. They’ve earned valuable UCAS points and learned a tremendous amount along the way.” As a national network of performing arts schools, Stagecoach is already 25

years old, and has been running in the North Somerset area for more than 13 years. Heidi, now completing her 10th year as Stagecoach principal, credits two things for the success enjoyed in the exams. “When our students attend their weekly classes, they are challenged to

Feature Love your eyewear with Lindberg

t’s rare to write just about one frame company. This month we’ve got to extol the virtues of Lindberg. Getting your first Lindberg is like getting your first Macbook, or Mont Blanc: you’ll love your eyewear. Lynne Fernandes partners with Lindberg because they share good design, a 100%

attention to the beauty in detail, innovation and originality in their company culture. Lindberg use only the best titanium alloys, lasercut into incredibly light frames. This creates a beautiful, minimalist design and a frame without screws, rivets and welds. The titanium is hypoallergenic, extremely flexible, lightweight and strong. This flexibility allows Lynne Fernandes to adjust the frame exactly to your face: it will not pinch or slide. The patented frame building design makes it possible to design a unique and personal frame - perfect in shape, colour and size. Lindberg also works with Italian-made acetate, a natural material made of cotton which provides the most exquisite, deep colour hues. The combination of titanium and acetate sets new standards for lightweight, flexible eyewear with the stunning new Lindberg Acetanium range. Visit the shop at Ivy Court, 63 High Street, Nailsea to see why Lynne Fernandes are proud to stock this gorgeous new design classic.

It’s so important to protect our eyes from UV light with good UV blocking sunglasses to reduce the damage that can cause cataract and macula degeneration. Talk to your optometrist about UV filters in sunglasses, ordinary glasses and contact lenses: they are not all the same. There are so many different contact lenses available with different benefits to suit a wide range of needs. For example a soon to be launched daily disposable lens is being marketed with a UV filter. Lynne Fernandes has launched LensClub so if you like the idea of free lenses whenever you want, why not join? There is absolutely no fee as a member. Just visit the practice and ask about joining.

Heath & eaut Exercise of the Month:

Seated Calf Raises Every month top personal trainer Matt Bembridge, AKA Gym Professor, provides an exercise of the month for readers to try. This month he talks you through Seated Calf Raises.

ith warm summer weather, it’s time for shorts, skirts, and short dresses. This means, legs on show. Having shapely calf muscles is something many women strive for and men all too often overlook in their training. Strong foundations will help with general balance, standing, walking, running, and help toward achieving that total body defined look. Although some may have a “high calf,” this appearance is often exaggerated with a far better developed Gastrocnemius to Soleus, which is common with those wearing heels all day or fighters bouncing around on their toes for long periods. For this reason and for all-round development, one of my favoured exercises for the Calf is a Seated Calf Raise. A flexed knee lessens the stretch in the Gastrocnemius (a knee flexor), so the movement can emphasize the Soleus. An exercise for all, here’s how to perform a Seated Calf Raise in the gym: 1) Select an appropriate weight. Adjust the height of thigh pads – so that they comfortably rest on your Quadriceps. 2) Place the balls of your feet onto the footplate. Try to keep your feet hip-width apart with toes pointing forward. 3) Raise your heels, taking the strain on the Calf Muscles. Release

FIGURE 2 the safety lever and inhale as you gently lower your heels to where you feel a stretch on your Calves [Figure 1]. 4) Exhale, as you raise your heels - fully contracting the Soleus and Gastrocnemius [Figure 2]. Repeat. [Side note: you may wish to perform the first set with less weight and increasing range-ofmovement in order to warm up the Achilles Tendon]. 5) Remember to return the safety lever upon the last repetition. At home, you can perform this exercise perching on the edge of a sturdy chair or table of the right height and resting the balls of your feet on to a large phone directory or unused book. To add resistance, place the flat side of dumbbells on to your thighs or use a food tray and load as appropriate (you may need someone to hand you the tray). Used throughout the day, Calves are a tough little muscle group - so performing high repetitions in a controlled manner is fine for this exercise. For further expert free training advice from Matt (AKA Gym Professor), Inventor of the global phenomenon Globe Gripz, please visit his comprehensive free-online-resource You can also follow Gym Professor on Facebook and Twitter.

August in the garden

raditionally one of the hottest months of the year, August in the garden usually means plenty of watering. If you’re going away on holiday then you might need to remind a friend or a family member to look after your garden while you’re away. As well as watering new plants, there are plenty of jobs to do this month to keep your garden nice for the summer and help prepare it for autumn. They include deadheading flowering plants regularly, prune

be inspired...

Wisteria, harvest vegetables when they become ready and collect seed from favourite plants. Keep ponds and water features topped up, damp down greenhouses on hot days to maintain humidity levels, and prepare hanging baskets for both now and the autumn by deadheading and watering them.

Baking Soda Natural Magic!

seful for many household tasks, natural and deodorising baking soda is a bit of magic that is essential in the home cleaning kit. Non-toxic and non-abrasive, it is ideal for use in a home with children and perfect for using throughout the home on many different types of surface. You can use it to remove toothpaste residue and leave a sparkling finish on tooth mugs and toothbrush holders by dissolving two tablespoons in a bowl of warm water and soaking them. Deodorise and clear a blocked plughole by pouring one cup of baking soda into the hole followed by one cup of vinegar. Leave the mixture to run through for a few moments then pour boiling water down the drain to flush through. You can also use it as a deodoriser 01275 for your carpet by sprinkling a 853202 fine dusting of baking soda onto it, then brush in with a soft, clean broom and leave for a few hours before vacuuming thoroughly.

Home & Garden Astron excellence rewarded

stron Fire and Security has received national recognition to put it on a par with some of the biggest businesses in the UK. The Portishead company has been given silver accreditation from the National Security Inspectorate for its

work providing a range of fire and security services. The accreditation was awarded after NSI inspected a selection of the company’s installations and audited all of its processes and client services to ensure they comply with industry best practice. Astron has been looking after local businesses such as Heritage Estates and West Coast Properties for more than 10 years and some of the first customers to take advantage of Astron’s new accreditation are Portishead Working Men’s Club, Tinca Gallery and The Mezze at the White Lion. Sales director, Greg van Laun, said: “The NSI accreditation essentially means that Astron is recognised by the police and the insurance industry on the same level as they do for ADT

and Chubb, which is something to shout about, as the public can have confidence that they will get a quality product and quality service to match”. “We take over many systems that have not been designed to meet the client’s needs, or are badly installed and maintained, so we believe that fire and security needs to be properly regulated, and will do our best to assist the NSI and the industry wherever we can.” For more information, telephone 01275 846514 or visit www.

A Very Brown Hedge Indeed!

Aphids are one of the commonest and most troublesome of all garden insect pests. They attack a large number of garden plants throughout the country and recently have been causing much disfigurement to ornamental Conifer hedges. Commonly referred to as Greenfly and Blackfly these aphids feed on hedges, sucking the sap of the plant and can spread several viruses, causing severe die back. The current troublesome aphid is the Cypress Aphid which predominantly affects Conifer hedging. The damage inflicted on conifer hedges by the aphid Cinara cupressi is severe and can lead to large brown patches on the hedge which leads to localised foliage death, reducing the aesthetic look of the hedge. As the aphid is active from May to October it is important to catch this problem early and apply treatments to stop its spread. At the first sign of brown patches telephone Bartlett Tree Experts for a free consultation and professional advice on 01275 371000. a complete and comprehensive tree care service since 1907

his summer, Weston and Mendip Advanced Motorists is offering drivers the chance to win up to two ‘Skill for Life’ Advanced Driving packages worth £279, plus a cash prize. To be in with a chance of winning, all you have to do is enter the ‘Sat Nav Challenge’, a fun treasure-hunt style event requiring competitors to use their GPS-enabled device to navigate their way to a variety of secret locations throughout the region. At each location, they will discover a series of questions on a range of motoring and general knowledge topics. There are three categories – 26 and under, over 26 and Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) members – and the team from each category who have correctly answered the most number of questions at the end of the event will be declared the winner The event will take place on Sunday, August 18, and it is important to

remember that it is not a time trial, and no competition of any form on the highway is allowed. To be in with a chance of winning, entry forms can be found at uk/satnav.htm or you can telephone 07020 934714. No competition of any form on the highway is allowed and the law and rules of the road must be obeyed at all times. Founded in 1983, the Weston and Mendip Advanced Motorists’ Group is a registered charity committed to improving driving standards and promoting road safety throughout the region. They are affiliated to the UK’s largest road safety charity, the IAM

(Institute of Advanced Motorists), and provide training for those wishing to improve their driving and get more enjoyment from it.

usness Profit improvement pointers Every month Della Hudson of Hudson Accountants will be providing advice on helping you to get more out of your business.

n June we presented our first Money Matters event at Colston Hall. The theme of my talk was six profit improvement pointers. The first of which was on pricing. Pricing is a subject worthy of a whole seminar to itself but one easy way to increase prices is to charge more for the same work. I don’t mean just increasing your prices and waiting for business to roll in but by repackaging your product or services to offer greater real and perceived value. If you sell products you could package a few together to provide a single solution, for instance including a charger with an electronic item. for £22 Everybody will need a plus VAT. charger so sell it to them up front rather than leaving Call them to buy one elsewhere on the internet in a couple 01275 849369 of days time. If you sell services you could

package a few of them together too. How about combining web design with print design to form a whole branding package? We took a few of our existing business products and put them together to form the basis of our Business Growth Programme. They were all services that we provided individually but, by putting them together, it was easier to show clients how we could add value by helping them to grow their business beyond their glass ceiling. So why not have a think about anything that you could package together into a solution and then present it so that it is clear to your clients how they can benefit? Do have a look at the video clips on our website for more ideas. Della Hudson BSc FCA owns and manages Hudson Accountants in Backwell, telephone 01275 406287 or email
