North Somerset Council is to spray paint the message: “Pick up your poo, we’re watching you” under a picture of a dog. Dog fouling is a persistent problem within North Somerset and the council hopes that this new initiative will help to encourage irresponsible dog owners to think again before leaving mess.

Community News Bandstand to be restored

ork to restore the bandstand at Elton Road in Clevedon to its former glory after weather damage is well underway. Specialist repair work at the much loved Grade Two listed Clevedon bandstand, which will cost ÂŁ19,605, will involve renovation work to English Heritage standards to ensure a like for like repair. A number of the fascia panels have been subject to weather damage and three moulded lime mortar panels will need handmade replacements. These will match the existing panels and will be built up of lime mortar in layers. The remaining panels have 15 layers of old paint that have built up, forming an impervious barrier which has prevented moisture from escaping, adding to the damage of the structure. These paint layers will be peeled away using a poultice which gets into all the cracks and crevices before being peeled away. The

poultice also ensures that any lead particles present in lead-based paints will not be released into the environment but absorbed into the paste and subsequently safely disposed of. Heritage masonry paints which are designed to be breathable and suitable for lime-based render will then be applied. The metal work will also be repainted. The council is currently looking to obtain funds to restore the original wooden screens around the base of the bandstand as a second part of the project. The Clevedon Yeo Rotary Club has pledged to assist in local fund raising for this part of the project.

yclists could soon be able to cycle from Clevedon to Weston after long-awaited plans to create a cycle link between the two seaside towns moved a step closer. North Somerset Council and sustainable transport charity Sustrans have been working on the project to form a cycle link between the towns since the mid 1970s. The route would go from Wick Lane, Wick St Lawrence to Yeo Bank Lane, Kingston Seymour and would follow the route of the historic Weston, Clevedon and Portishead Railway. The track would be created over a pre-existing farm track constructed by the Environment Agency for servicing its flood defences. The council resolved to secure the route in 2012 and has now reached agreements with landowners.

Foodbank figures show increase in food poverty

he number of people experiencing food poverty in the Clevedon area is increasing, as revealed by figures published by Clevedon foodbank last month. for help. It is often the case that, even though parents are working, the family income is so low that something like the increase in fuel costs or an unexpected bill can plunge them into crisis.” The foodbank, which is a completely confidential service, is a Christianbased project working in partnership with Churches Together in Clevedon (CTiC). Vouchers, which can be exchanged for a parcel containing three days’ worth of food, can be obtained from a number of agencies including children’s and family centres, schools, churches, medical centres and charities. Paul added: “We are all volunteers and the vast majority of the food we give out is donated by members of the public.” As well as the Clevedon base, they now have a distribution point in Portishead at the Gordano Valley Chuch offices that opens every Friday from noon-2pm. A similar point will open in Nailsea and they are also hoping to set up a point in Yatton, with the support of Yatton Parish Council. Local people can help feed families in crisis by donating at the next food collection at the Tesco store in Clevedon on Friday, July 5 and Saturday, July 6. new elephant enclosure at Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm, described as a five-star hotel for elephants, is nearing completion. The Elephant Eden facility, which cost £1.6million, was unveiled to the public last month and is having the finishing touches added to it before its new residents arrive. Recent visitors to the attraction, on Clevedon Road in Wraxall, have been able to have guided tours around the site, which has been built to three times the size of minimum zoo requirements. It features a huge elephant house, sand yards, an outdoor pool and 20 acres of land for the animals to roam in, making it the largest elephant

facility in the UK and one of the biggest in northern Europe. The revolutionary house is one of the first to be designed with both the elephants and keepers in mind and has a number of different sand yards so the females and males can be kept separately. It also has specialist lighting and an electronic food system from gantries which will see food lowered into the enclosure at random, to keep the animals stimulated. The zoo has recruited Sandra de Rek, an experienced elephant keeper from Holland, to manage the site and keepers will be using a protected contact method which rewards elephants for their co-operation. The huge outdoor space is divided up into fields and yards with a plantation of trees in one, a scratching post and a swimming pool, complete with water cannon. Elephants will have 24/7 access to the indoor and outdoor areas, while special visitor viewing galleries will provide areas for keepers to present

practical demonstrations close to the public. The environment and modern facilities will help enrich the animal’s welfare and lives and the zoo hopes to breed them, hoping to have up to 10 elephants in the future. Elephant Eden will also become one of the greenest zoo exhibits in the UK as it will be run on renewable energies – solar roof panels and a bio-fuel burner for heat.

hree Clevedon men took part in the last leg of a charity cycle which has raised more than £30,000 for Cancer Research UK. Adam Hack, Joe Kaniecki and Luke Hack, as well as Gaz Shiel from Portishead, joined the Gail Force Ten team for the Taunton to Land’s End part of the journey from John O’Groats. The sponsored ride was organised in memory of Gail Murray, who sadly passed away at the age of 59 after a brave battle against oesophageal

“We would like to thank our sponsors, Lisa Weakley of Global Independent Travel and Dan Meredith of Fox Studio Cycling and Go Fit, whose generous donations covered the cost of our jackets and jerseys.” The group’s aim was to raise a minimum of £6,000 for the charity but they have smashed that target. Anyone who would like to donate can do so at teams/GailForceTen.

Community News Clevedon rowers storm Scilly Isles championships

he Clevedon Pilot Gig Club has had another highly successful visit to the annual World Pilot Gig Championships, with a Clevedon crew on the prizegiving podium for the first time in the club’s history. About 70 members and family supporters attended the event in the Scilly Isles and the Club was able to field a total of 12 men’s and ladies’ crews in the various events and group stages, doubling the number of rowers taken in 2012. In addition to their own racing gigs Blackbird and Watch and Pray, Clevedon was helped by borrowing

two further gigs from the Scillies, plus one from Porthgain in West Wales, joining the 133 gigs that entered this year’s events. Chairman Andrew Brown said: “Since our first visit in 2011, when we took just 13 members and our new gig Watch and Pray, we have managed to double our numbers each year, but we never imagined that in just two years Clevedon would be up there with the more established Clubs in being able to field twelve crews. The traditional opening races saw the Clevedon crews perform well against strong competition. There was an upset in the mass race of all the gigs, dubbed the Grand National of the Seas, with both Clevedon Ladies’ and Men’s B crews beating their A crew counterparts. The Ladies’ C crew won their final

heat and meant they got a place on the podium. The final results saw the Men’s A and B crews at 56th and 57th, the Ladies’ B crew finished 66th and Ladies’ A crew 74th. The Men’s crew C were 93rd, Men’s D crew 126th. The Ladies C crew were 121st and D crew 106th. Andrew added: “Once again our crews gave their all following some dedicated winter training and we should feel happy that we have more than consolidated our overall position, particularly the Ladies’ crews, which have leapt up the rankings. “Our strong presence and performances in Scilly has earned us a lot of respect and has really enhanced the image and reputation of Clevedon.’’

Hot Tubs from Bristol HotSpring S ince the time of the ancient Greeks, people have found natural healing powers in bubbling pools of hot water. Through the ages, the Romans, Greeks, Japanese and other cultures have realised its many benefits through spirit, mind and body. Hot tubs can create the same effect. The heat, buoyancy and massage found in the warm, soothing waters of a hot tub create an experience that is both relaxing and rejuvenating. Sit back and relax in your hot tub and feel the power of the hydromassage. Whether it’s to unwind from the complexities of everyday life or to soothe sore muscles and joints caused by sports or minor strains, here’s how a hot tub hydromassage can help you feel better - naturally.

Muscle pain relief: Warm water engulfs the body and loosens muscle tightness. Arthritis relief: Water makes the body buoyant and allows free movement of the joints with up to 90% less weight when the body is immersed in water. Insomnia: People who relax in a hot tub for 15-20 minutes before bed time are more likely to enjoy a deep and peaceful sleep. Joint pain: Warm water in a hot tub will dilate the blood vessels to relieve painful symptoms. Stress and general well-being: People who use hot tubs and spa facilities regularly enjoy a feeling of rejuvenation, and relaxation that only hydrotherapy can bring. Spa treatments are good for the mind and the soul, and reduce stress and anxiety. Quality family

time: Rather than spending evenings in front of the television, getting the family together in the hot tub is a great way to spend quality time together and bond.

Nurseries With September approaching it’s time to enrol your child into a nursery so they can start to learn and develop. There are a number of fantastic nurseries in Clevedon to choose from.

Bognor House

ognor House has been established as a day nursery in Clevedon since 1963 and they are proud to have a dedicated team of professionals. Family Fun Day will be held at The Bristol Inn in Chapel Hill, Clevedon, on Sunday, July 21 to raise funds for the cardiac unit at Bristol’s Children’s Hospital. Clevedon father Brian Harries was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy, a serious disease of the heart, in his late 20s and has learned that his four young sons have been diagnosed with the same condition. Luke, 8, Taylor, 7, Charlie, 5 and TJ, 4, all attend St Nicholas Chantry Primary School and since their diagnosis Brian and wife Sarah have been keen to support the work of the cardiac unit at Bristol’s Children’s Hospital and have begun fundraising for Above and Beyond. The event will run from 12 noon onwards and will feature a bouncy castle, face painting, live bands, children’s disco, raffle and auction with lots of prizes donated by local businesses, including vouchers and two tickets to New York. 7 habits of highly effective people

ver been envious of those millionaire entrepreneurs and their ability to make the right choices? Here’s a bit of essential reading by Stephen Covey for your summer holidays so that you can return refreshed, effective, renewed and able to make the right choices to achieve your dreams. Habit 1 Be proactive - This is the ability to control your environment, rather than have it control you. Habit 2 Begin with the end in mind - Leading yourself, that is, towards what you consider your aims. Habit 3 Put first things first - This is the habit of personal management and is about organising and implementing activities in line with the aims established in habit 2. Habit 4 Think win-win - Covey says that win-win is based on the assumption that there is plenty for everyone and success follows a co-operative approach more naturally than the confrontational win-or-lose. Habit 5 Seek first to understand and then to be understood - This is Covey’s habit of communication. Habit 6 Synergise - This is the habit of creative co-operation – the principle that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Habit 7 Sharpen the sword Covey interprets the self into four parts: Spiritual, mental, physical and social/emotional, £15 per treatment which all need nourishing Strenthen your immune system and developing. Health & Beauty Let’s get motivated with hypnotherapy

local hypnotherapist is focusing on how hypnotherapy can help us to improve motivation levels. Rae Arundel runs Harbourside Hypnotherapy. She explains how hypnotherapy can help with motivation when we have good intentions to lose weight, take up exercise, stop smoking, or change our lives in one way or another. Rae said: “Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a modern, researchbased combination of psychotherapy and hypnosis, aimed at encouraging clients to focus on how they want things to be. We work with our clients to help them set their own realistic goals.” There are many reasons why some people fail to fulfil their goals, even when they can see that they are going to benefit from completing what they set out to do. Sometimes it can just be about getting our goal right in the first place. Rae added: “We encourage clients to break things down in to smaller chunks or mini-goals, so progress can be measured and it’s easier to see the movement forward. That in itself is a great motivator. “There’s nothing like seeing your own progress to help you move towards your goal, and that enables clients to maintain their motivation easily.” Rae is a Solution Focused Hypnotherapist practising in Weston and Portishead. Health & Beauty Exercise of the Month:

Russian Twists

Every month top personal trainer Matt Bembridge, AKA Gym Professor, provides an exercise of the month for readers to try. This month he talks you through Russian Twists

Here’s another “old-school” exercise that most people will benefit from by performing regularly: strengthening your core and helping to avoid against injury: Russian Twists. Many day-to-day activities and/or sporting endeavours involve a rotational movement of some kind. It stands to reason that mimicking such a movement under load in a controlled manner within our exercise regimen is advantageous when it comes to replicating it in a “real-life” circumstance. As most sports involve this rotational movement whilst standing, many sports coaches will suggest performing rotation exercise in a standing position. Personally, I prefer to advise that it be predominantly performed whilst seated, as is common with Russian Twists. The reason, concentrate on trunk rotation and therefore avoid against additional stress on the tendons and ligaments surrounding the knee complex. Here’s how Russian Twists are performed: 1) Select a suitable weight (dumbbell, weight plate, medicine ball, bottle of water, etc.). 2) With the weight rested against your thigh, sit on the edge of a bench or chair. 3) Using both hands, curl the weight from your thigh in order that your forearms are parallel to your thighs and the floor, with your fists pointing forward. [Side note: Rather

than increase the weight to increase difficulty, you may choose to extend your arm at the elbow joint (outstretched) so that your forearms and upper-arms are parallel to the floor]. Lock this arm position. This is the Start-Position. 4) Inhale. Then, exhale as you twist in a controlled manner to one-side, fully contracting your Obliques muscles. This is the Mid-Position. You should keep looking forward throughout. 5) Return to the Start-Position and inhale. You may choose to repeat the movement on the same side, then swap sides, or, twist from side-to-side (pausing in the middle for inhalation). Using a dumbbell (preferable) for this exercise, I choose to slip my favoured Globe Gripz on to the dumbbell shaft, interlocking my fingers around a single globe. This article has been provided by Matt Bembridge AKA Gym Professor. Visit Matt’s free-online-resource at

Carry on hoeing your beds to keep down the weeds and maybe add a mulch (bark chippings or composted bark) between your plants and shrubs. This will help suppress weeds and help retain moisture in the ground if we are in for longer drier spells. Support your tall herbaceous plants such as Lupin’s, Delphiniums and tie in your climbers and Sweet Peas. If we are in for very dry weather a few handy tips for the garden are to raise the blades on your lawn mower for a longer cut. This will mean the grass retains more moisture and will look greener for longer. Also water your pots, tubs and young plants in the evening as they will absorb more moisture overnight.

f you are thinking of improving your garden and getting rid of an old and tired border now is as good a time as any. Make sure you have a plan in place before you start so you can combine a variety of plants that will add colour and interest to your garden throughout the seasons. Decide on the area that your new border will occupy. Consider when and where the sun hits your garden and dig over the whole area, digging out any existing weeds. It’s important to ensure the soil has good structure and is healthy. You can check the quality of your soil with a do-ityourself soil test kit, which are available from most garden centres. For small borders one plant of each type is fine, but larger borders need three to five of the same plant together. Make sure you get a balance of shrubs, evergreens and perennials to get the effect you desire. nne Cleans Houses has been providing high quality domestic cleaning, ironing and light gardening services to clients in North Somerset for over three years. Their reputation for quality and a friendly, personal service has grown the business from a handful of clients to the many happy customers they now visit regularly.

The business has grown so much that Anne is now looking for more part-time domestic cleaners to work in Portishead and Clevedon, who are as passionate about cleaning as she is.

She said: “We would love to hear from motivated, flexible and hard working individuals who get great satisfaction from a job well done.” If you think you fit the bill call Anne on 01275 846611 or email anne@ You can also contact them via the website www. where you will also find more information about the business. Anne added: “I don’t want new clients to worry that we won’t be able to fulfill their needs while we are seeking

to expand our existing team. We have a great workforce whose flexibility allows us to accommodate all our clients’ cleaning needs.”

Home & aren Community News Help your home – and the homeless too

ith the popularity of programmes like Grand Designs, Location, Location, Location and Homes Under the Hammer, what a house looks like both inside and out has never been in the spotlight so much. Many people will not have had their property looked over by an expert, but a scheme run by the charity Shelter means that you could have a consultation with an architect while also helping the homeless. Called Architect in the House, this is

a joint charitable initiative by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and Shelter, the housing and homelessness charity. Homeowners can receive an hour consultation with an RIBA chartered architect in return for a donation to Shelter. Whether it’s inspiration for a study, an extra bedroom, or just better living space you need, a chartered RIBA architect can offer creativity and professional advice that will help bring your ideas to life. Local chartered architect Doug Fowler of Clevedon has signed up to take part and said: “I have been supporting this scheme for more than five years and have helped contribute to the great work carried out by Shelter in the process. “I urge anyone in North Somerset who is thinking of

undertaking work on their home, to use an architect who has signed up for Architect in the House. We can help people unleash the potential of their homes while helping those with more significant housing problems.” Shelter estimates that more than 650,000 households in Britain are overcrowded, affecting more than one million children in England alone. The donation will go towards Shelter’s work to help all those living in conditions that have a devastating effect on family life and children’s safety, health and education. Homeowners can register for their consultation by visiting www. They will then be matched to local RIBA chartered practices and architects best suited to meet their needs.

Making your dreams a reality! If you are thinking of how to achieve your property dreams, give me a call on 01275 349076 or check out my website: My practice is the only RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) Chartered Practice in Clevedon. I specialise in converting homes, or designing new builds, to help clients achieve their property aspirations I am proud to support the national charity – SHELTER – through the “Architect in the House” scheme whereby I give an hour’s consultation for a donation to Shelter. Over the past few years, I have raised over £2,000.00 and the current scheme is open until November 2013.

Home & aren Get your patio light right

ow is the time to spruce up your patio in preparation for the summer months ahead, and to make it as attractive as it should be why not

invest in some light? When you’re out on the patio with some friends in the evening, good lighting can create an atmosphere everyone enjoys. When it comes to lighting a little goes a long way at night so do not go for too bright a light as there is such a thing as over-lighting an area. Instead, use lighting selectively and decide what features to light and to what intensity. If you have any borders around your patio, subtle solar lights within flowerbeds or along paths can create a relaxing mood.

If you don’t have a natural spot to place solar lights, you can buy patio umbrellas which are fitted with solar lights in the canvas.

A Very Brown Hedge Indeed!

Aphids are one of the commonest and most troublesome of all garden insect pests. They attack a large number of garden plants throughout the country and recently have been causing much disfigurement to ornamental Conifer hedges. Commonly referred to as Greenfly and Blackfly these aphids feed on hedges, sucking the sap of the plant and can spread several viruses, causing severe die back. The current troublesome aphid is the Cypress Aphid which predominantly affects Conifer hedging. The damage inflicted on conifer hedges by the aphid Cinara cupressi is severe and can lead to large brown patches on the hedge which leads to localised foliage death, reducing the aesthetic look of the hedge. As the aphid is active from May to October it is important to catch this problem early and apply treatments to stop its spread. At the first sign of brown patches telephone Bartlett Tree Experts for a free consultation and professional advice on 01275 371000. a complete and comprehensive tree care service since 1907

s a car enthusiast I have driven many high performance vehicles over the years but none come close to the totally and awe inspiring capabilities of the latest M5 which have had the pleasure of driving for the last couple of weeks. The car takes everything that made the old M5 a pain to live with every day and corrects it all in one go. It is mega fast even in comfort

mode with a power train like no other I have driven largely down to the amazing dual clutch semi auto gearbox mated to the 4.4 litre V8 twin turbo engine putting out 552 bhp and 501 lb ft torque. Others produce similar performance figures such as Porsche and Mercedes but none delivers in the manner the new M5 does. It is the most responsive turbo charged car I have ever driven with a 0-60 mph time of 4.3 seconds and a 0-100mph in a little

Road hogs to face fine and points!

rivers who hog the middle lane or tailgate other cars face on-the-spot fines of £100 and three points on their licence under plans unveiled last month. Police are also expected to get powers to issue instant fixed penalty notices for not giving way at a junction or using the wrong lane at a roundabout. Other changes being brought forward by the Government include increasing the fine for using a hand-held mobile phone while driving or not wearing a seat belt from £60 to £100. Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) director of policy and research Neil Greig commented: “This is a major change in traffic law enforcement and the IAM is concerned that issuing fixed penalty tickets for careless driving downplays the seriousness of the offence. “Careless covers a wide range of poor to reckless driving behaviour that often merits further investigation.” “This could free up traffic police time and allow them to maintain a higher profile. But without traffic cops out on the road to enforce this new approach it will have little impact on road safety.”

under 9 seconds onto a top speed limited to 155mph. What stands out against its competitors is the power delivery as it delivers all its torque from as little as 1,500 to 5750 rpm onto a red line at 7,400 rpm. BMW say you can achieve 28mpg but the reality is more like 20mpg in normal fast-ish driving which is what I achieved.

Apparently more than 80% of the M5`s components are either altered or replaced compared to the standard 5 series. Having said this it does not look an especially menacing car and if you set the button to comfort mode you would think you are in a normal 5 series. You also have sport and sport plus buttons to play with which sharpen

up the cars dynamics should you decide to take it on a track day Prices start at £73,000, which might sound a lot but if you are in the market for a super fast saloon with all round capabilities this is the car to have. In my opinion it’s one of the best cars in the world today! Business Every month McManus Williams Limited answers some of your business and accountancy related questions.

Question & Answer – Session Eight Q: I’m thinking of starting up on my own as a self-employed tradesman. I’ve been to my bank to ask for a loan and they’ve told me I’ll need a business plan first, even though I’ve been doing this for twenty years and banked with them all my life! I just want to crack on, why don’t they believe in me?! A: There will be many reading this who will agree wholeheartedly with your sentiment. You’re an experienced tradesman, surely the bank should trust that you know what you’re doing? Now, I’m going to go out on a bit of a limb here and declare that I’m with the bank on this one, but before you shake your head in disgust, hear me out. Personally I believe that business plans are essential. Not just useful, essential. Why, because they eliminate doubt. In fact some of the

best business plans are the ones that tell you not to do something. I say that not to put anyone off starting in business, I’m enthusiastically helping people start up every week, but it’s surely got to be a good idea to prove, if only to yourself, that your business idea is viable? After all, there’s no point jumping into something only to find you’ve underestimated all your costs, you opened up in the wrong part of town and it seems people aren’t quite as interested in your extensive range of second hand garden gnomes as you thought they’d be. A business plan is an important exercise. After all, it requires you to sit down and think things through. It shows to othersthat you’re serious. So, what’s to think through…? Is there a market for my business and how big is it?

What’s my local competition like? Will I need insurance, staff to help me? Will I need a vehicle and how will I finance it?How much working capital (cash) will I need? What should my margins be? What will I need to put aside for tax? If numbers aren’t your thing, don’t worry. Find a good accountant; we live for this kind of stuff. Then when your business plan’s done andyou know what’s in store, you know what you need to achieve and how long you have to achieve it. Then you can jump in. Your friends, family, accountant and bank manager will be there to support you when you do.
