But it was all part of a detailed marine engineering assessment of the sea wall, which has been leaking, by North Somerset Council. MARLENs also took advantage of this to carry out other essential maintenance work including dredging the lake and removing litter. The work was part of a successful bid that the council, along with Clevedon Town Council, MARLENs and Clevedon Civic Society, made to the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) last year to help fund repairs to the leaking sea wall. The first round application gave the council a £40,000 grant to carry out detailed evaluation of the wall and to develop a comprehensive business plan for the project. Cllr Peter Bryant, executive member responsible for parks and open spaces, said: “We are delighted to have been successful in this lottery application. Clevedon sea front is a fantastic beauty spot and the Marine Lake is a really important part of the landscape.”

esidents in Clevedon are being urged by North Somerset Council to give feedback on a new Sites and Policies Development Plan (DPD). The plan has been drafted by the council to make decisions about where new housing and jobs will be located and where and when new facilities and infrastructure, such as schools and roads, will be built. Clevedon Town Council is staging a district council DPD exhibition and consultation for residents on Thursday and Friday, April 4 and 5 from 10am-5pm at its offices at Old Street and people will be able to air their views.

The council wants to ensure that valued landscapes are protected; in particular green belt and areas of outstanding natural beauty and local communities are supported over the next 15 years. Residents can have their say to ensure the right development is built in the right place at the right time. The plan sits alongside the Core Strategy, the high-level planning document for the district which sets out the overall objectives and strategies and policies to guide new development up to 2026. The draft document will be shaped and changed by the feedback received.

Community News

The volunteer organisation is in the running for a Queens Award for Voluntary Service, an annual award for outstanding achievement by groups of volunteers who regularly devote their time to helping others in the community, improving the quality of life and opportunity for others and providing an outstanding service. Nominations are assessed by a regional committee before being passed to a national committee for final selection and recommendation to The Queen. Chairman Jo Lea-Jones was interviewed about Clevedon Pride’s work by John Laycock, deputy Lord Lieutenant of Somerset and they have been highly recommended.

Details of the winners are announced on June 2, the anniversary of The Queen’s Coronation. Winning groups receive a certificate signed by The Queen and a commemorative piece of crystal. Since being formed, Clevedon Pride have helped with the regeneration of Queens Square

Clevedon cyclists saddle up for Cancer Research UK

A

team of local cyclists is stepping up training and fund-raising as the start date of their charity ride from John O’Groats to Land’s End draws ever nearer. Clevedon brothers Reuben, Luke and Alex Murray have organised the two-wheeled trek in memory of their mum, Gail, who sadly passed away last year after suffering oesophageal cancer aged just 59. They will be part of a ten-strong team known as ‘GAIL FORCE TEN’ that will

set off from Scotland on May 18 and includes friends and fellow Somerset residents Paul O’Connell, Kevin Watts, Bob Croker, Steve Harvey, Nick Hides, Paul Threasher, Ceri Evans, Andrew Zikking and Simon Snook.

As part of their training, the group undertook a 250-mile, round ride to Woolacombe in Devon which certainly put their stamina and muscles to the test.

“Crossing Exmoor was a challenge and riding up a hill for four miles in the lowest gear certainly isn’t fun although great for the confidence when you get to the top.” Having surpassed their original fundraising target of £6,000, the team is now aiming to generate £10,000 in sponsorship and attract the support of local companies. Mercedes-Benz of Weston has donated the use of two Mercedes-Benz vans as support vehicles. Any businesses interested in getting involved should contact Luke Murray on 01275 876505, whilst donations can be made at www.justgiving.com/ teams/gailforceten

The trip resulted in six punctures, 6,000 calories per person burned and a staggering 10,000 feet of hill climbs completed. “It was tough but all part of our preparations,” said Luke Murray

espite the distinct chill in the air, the 55th Annual Spring Clevedon Gardeners’ Club Flower Show proved an outstanding success. A large number of people braved the elements to be met by a rainbow of colour as they entered Clevedon Community Centre. The number of exhibits and exhibitors had increased from last year, including children and young adults. Visitors were initially met by a sea of yellow daffodils, followed by impressive displays of snowdrops, crocus, hyacinths, iris and hellebores amongst others and taste buds were excited by mouth watering exhibits of bread, cakes, scones, preserves and such like. Local arts and craft skills were well

represented and there was a huge display of colourful photographs, covering a wide range of well composed subject matter.

Youth & Education Busy term at Fairfield School

Year 5 children spent a Medieval Day at school with a visit from a real Knight, while pupils spoke, sang and performed for the rest of the school and family and friends at three year assemblies.

C

hildren at Fairfield School in Backwell have had an extremely busy term with lots going on. The school celebrated World Book Day with the Headmistress as Cruella de Ville and the staff as her dalmations as well as Red Nose Day, where the children spent the day doing various bizarre activities to raise money.

This was followed by outstanding performances in Key Stage 2 of their performance of ‘Readin, Ritin’ and Rockin.’ Fairfield has also achieved high standards academically. Year 6 pupils sat entrance exams for senior schools and were all offered a place at their chosen one.

Following on from this they enjoyed another maths challenge, many successful sporting achievements through football, netball, hockey, swimming and cross country, and the regional finals of the North Somerset Sports Hall Athletics. The children managed to experience various outings, including a trip to Raglan Castle, Bristol Zoo and Year 5 had their two night residential at Llansteffan, and had visits to the School from Toby Hulse, who is a writer and director and the Bristol Old Vic.

Youth & Education Red Maids’ School brings fun to outdoor education

P

upils at The Red Maids’ Junior School are looking forward to an action-packed summer thanks to their well-established outdoor education programme. All the girls take part in day or residential trips between April and July, the costs of which are all included in the basic school fees. Years 3 and 4 take it in turn to visit Mendip Outdoor Pursuits for caving, climbing, canoeing and completing an assault course while Years 5 and 6 team up for a week of orienteering, absailing, raft-racing, surfing and overnight bivouacking at Skern Lodge in North Devon.

Mrs Gillian Rowcliffe, headteacher of the junior school, said: “The girls love all our outdoor education and often think they are just having fun but we know it’s also providing invaluable learning both physically and mentally. “This is a key part of the Red Maids’ teaching philosophy throughout the whole school. “Outdoor education helps develop a can-do attitude that enables our students to do whatever they put their minds to, including achieving their best academically.”

Young drummers and vocalists needed for Summer Concert

he Rock Project sessions in Clevedon are on the lookout for budding young bass guitarists to join the group as they start to prepare for their summer concert in July. Andy Collins, who runs The Rock Project, said: “We have bass guitar spaces available for 12-18 year olds that either already play or who wish to learn.” The two-hour weekly sessions are a unique and social way of learning guitar, bass guitar, drums and vocals with a one hour professional lesson followed by an hour of jamming

Shop Locally There is no better place to shop than your local town. Clevedon Living is an avid supporter of shopping locally. The local shops are the lifeblood of our community and we are passionate about promoting their products, services and trades. Making small changes to your spending habits can help save the High Street and put more money back into the local economy.

Sweets galore at Rhubarb ‘n’ Custard

S

weet lovers of all ages are licking their lips after the opening of a new sweet shop in Clevedon town centre. Rhubarb ‘n’ Custard, at 2 The Triangle, has been opened by Richard Searle. Richard, who also owns jewellers Rich the Goldsmith, said: “The jewellers had been in these premises for 17 years and the place was just too big, so we moved it to 8 The Triangle, which was a better size for the business. That left us thinking ‘what can we do with this place?’ We talked to residents and looked at what Clevedon didn’t have and decided there was a real need for a good sweet shop.” But Rhubarb ‘n’ Custard is not like any

old sweet shop, it sells specialised sweets, American candy along with traditional and retro sweets sold from glass jars or wrapped individually and weighed on scales.

since their childhood.

It sells tuck shop confectionary from pic ‘n’ mix and sherbet dips to jelly babies and black jacks.

Monday-Friday from 8am-5.30pm, Saturday from 9am-5.30pm and Sunday from 10.30am-4pm.

Rhubarb ‘n’ Custard is open seven days a week:

There is also a selection of slush puppies and an extensive range of milkshakes on offer. Richard said: “It’s brilliant for the kids and we are run off our feet at around half past three when school’s out!” Grown-ups with a sweet tooth say they love the nostalgia. It’s like a trip down memory lane for them, choosing sweets they haven’t eaten

Business

McManus Williams Ltd Every month McManus Williams Limited answers some of your business and accountancy related questions. Question & Answer - Session Five Q: I’ve been hearing a lot on the news recently about the government’s pledge to crack down on tax avoidance. I’m a director of my own small company, how likely am I to be investigated really? Is there any way to reduce that risk? A: The government has indeed been making noises that it wants to tackle this issue, though much of the talk has been about high-end and fairly aggressive tax avoidance schemes. Not surprising, with billions of pounds of tax revenues at stake. It is unlikely that as a small owner managed firm you will find yourself involved or even able to qualify for such schemes. The risk of a more regular, general tax enquiry is nevertheless a real one and careful consideration should be given to your affairs if you want to enjoy a peaceful life, free from HMRC’s warm embrace.

So what are the main triggers? There can be lots of different reasons why HMRC have decided to take an interest in you. Many people immediately jump to the conclusion that the neighbour they fell out with last month has dobbed them in, but by far the most common reason is simply that the numbers don’t make sense. Random increases in costs, abnormally high costs for your industry and fluctuating profit margins can all lead to your file being ‘red flagged’ for closer inspection. Most of the time such fluctuations can be easily explained or result from genuine mistakes, but whatever the reason the tax man will want his answers.

ensure they target their manpower as effectively as possible. HMRC will never comment on their methods, but it seems fair to assume that they will have less faith in figures provided by an unrepresented individual than if they have appointed a qualified agent. Then of course if you regularly file your returns or pay your tax late you’re simply asking for trouble. The more disorganised you appear to the Revenue the less faith they will have that you’ve got the numbers right.

Some investigations are entirely random; the luck of the draw, but more often than not HMRC risk assesses businesses to

Health & Beauty Exercise of the Month: L e g B l a s t e r S q u a t s

Every month top personal trainer Matt Bembridge, AKA Gym Professor, provides an exercise of the month for readers to try. This month he talks you through Leg Blaster Squats. lthough children often demonstrate the perfect squat, many adults will struggle through lack of strength, poor flexibility, and/or a pre-existing injury. More alike to a Hack Squat, Leg Blaster Squats offer many of the benefits of squatting while reducing stress on the lower back and knees. They are a perfect introduction for developing your thighs and building lower body strength and can prove taxing for many advanced athletes too by simply increasing the repetitions or adding weight. To perform the exercise at home, a doorframe, post, or secure handrail can be used for support. The latter will prove more comfortable. In a gym environment, an equipment machine upright or a locked-in smith-bar is suitable. Take a firm hold of your support (doorframe, handrail, etc.) with your toes in-line with your hands. Your hands should naturally fall around hip-height. Your feet should be shoulder-width apart and facing forward. Ensuring a tight hold of your support, lean back. Then, bend your knees ever-so-slightly, taking the strain onto your thighs. This is the exercise startposition.

Inhale, and bend your knees – lowering yourself down until your thighs are parallel (if comfortable, further, as pictured). This is the exercise mid-postion. Exhale, as you extend your knees to assume the startposition. Repeat as appropriate. Healthy beginners of a normal weight should struggle to perform 10 repetitions for 2 sets, but should quickly improve. Advanced trainers should struggle to perform 30 to 50 repetitions for 4 sets. Receive 20% off your shoes when you book a foot treatment at Tonic or reflexology with Katharina Yeadon or 20% off your foot treatment or reflexology when you buy a pair of shoes at SoleLution. During the celebrations there will be numerous competitions, including a design a shoe contest, a colouring competition and free prize draw. At SoleLution, all the staff are trained to fit shoes. They offer a free measuring and fitting service for Children from their first steps to school and are more than happy to give advice to adults. “When we decided to open SoleLution, I wanted to ensure that we were able to provide the proper advice and help to those buying footwear, particularly to parents looking for shoes for their children, so I trained with the Society of Shoe Fitters. Health & Beauty Fantastic Low Cost Gym Membership

W

e are all affected by the rising cost of living and it’s no surprise that people are looking to make cuts to their expenditure wherever they can. The first things to go are often the luxuries – meals out, beauty treatments, things that are not regarded as a necessity. Some people might include gym membership in this category, yet experts suggest that in these difficult financial times, maintaining health and well being can be even more important than ever. Strode Leisure Centre is working hard to support those who want to exercise regularly, but need to budget their monthly out goings.

The benefits of their £19.99 per month gym only membership are unlimited use of the gym,

an induction, 100 per cent money back guarantee, and a short term commitment. In addition to gym only membership they also have swim membership for those who enjoy training in the pool and an all-inclusive kinetika membership which covers gym, swimming and our extensive programme of group exercise classes. Make your front garden sparkle

W

ith spring arriving, homeowners are starting to take a fresh look at their gardens after the winter period. Front gardens often get overlooked and can be seen as the poor relation to the back garden. However they are probably the most important area for improving the appearance of your property with the added benefit that you will see the improvements as you pass through this garden each and every day. With planning regulations affecting many aspects of a front garden, it’s well worth getting some professional help if you are thinking of re-planning your property frontage. Front boundaries, drives, outbuildings and some aspects of drainage are all subject to planning restrictions. Terrey Maufe of Outerspace Garden Design and Build, said: “Front gardens can still be green and inviting spaces even if they need to provide parking and storage. “It’s often impractical to mow grass at the front of a property so it takes careful planning to balance all the practical considerations with appropriate and attractive planting.”

It may be that your front garden enjoys the best aspect of sunshine at a particular time of day, so having somewhere to sit can help to create a focal point and a sense of a ‘living space’. There’s also no reason why a front garden can’t be a productive space, growing fruit and some vegetables is certainly a possibility in some gardens and can be integrated into the overall design of the space. A small garden tree such as a Sorbus ‘Joseph Rock’ or Amelanchier lamarkii can really bring some scale into the space as well as screening from the road or neighbours, whereas carefully located lighting can highlight specific features and create a warm welcome home. Outerspace offers fixed priced design packages that include a client briefing session, site survey and assessment and design presentation. Design costs can be confirmed following an initial consultation where indicative budgets can be established.

Home & Garden Let the Fairies work their magic

T

o busy or just want a reliable person to clean for you well. Fortunately help is at hand thanks to Clevedon resident Jessica McManus. The married mum of two started up cleaning company Leave it to the Fairies, a friendly, trustworthy and reliable service. Leave it to the Fairies offers a fresh and flexible approach to providing cleaning services. They will do anything around the home that makes people’s busy lives just that little bit easier, from standard cleaning to ironing, washing, bed changes - you name it - as

regularly or irregularly as needed. Jessica, 28, said: “After having my second daughter Evie I knew I really wanted to go back to work. “It was very important though that whatever job I took on worked well around my family commitments. That’s why I started Leave it to the fairies.” Having the fairies in to clean is fun too because they leave fairy cakes behind after every visit, so when you sit down with a cup of tea in your clean home after a long hard day, you can enjoy a treat too. If you would like to find out more email Jessica@ leaveittothefairies. co.uk and let the fairies work their magic for you.

A Very Brown Hedge Indeed!

Aphids are one of the commonest and most troublesome of all garden insect pests. They attack a large number of garden plants throughout the country and recently have been causing much disfigurement to ornamental Conifer hedges. Commonly referred to as Greenfly and Blackfly these aphids feed on hedges, sucking the sap of the plant and can spread several viruses, causing severe die back. The current troublesome aphid is the Cypress Aphid which predominantly affects Conifer hedging. The damage inflicted on conifer hedges by the aphid Cinara cupressi is severe and can lead to large brown patches on the hedge which leads to localised foliage death, reducing the aesthetic look of the hedge. As the aphid is active from May to October it is important to catch this problem early and apply treatments to stop its spread. At the first sign of brown patches telephone Bartlett Tree Experts for a free consultation and professional advice on 01275 371000. a complete and comprehensive tree care service since 1907

Motors Study reveals British Cars lose value fastest

B

ritish cars lose more than half of their value over 4 years, according to research from car search engine Adzuna.co.uk. The research, conducted earlier this year, analysed more than 600,000 used car ads indexed on Adzuna from across UK locations, extracting asking prices for the most popular models. The price was then placed against new car prices from 2009, resulting in a ‘depreciation score’ for every car.

British car brands have lost their value faster than cars from any other country in Europe, losing on average 51% of their worth over four years, while French cars follow closely behind on 49%. German and Italian cars hold their value better, falling just 40% over the same period. The cars that keep their value the most over time are Volkswagen Polos and SMART cars as they retain three quarters of their new price after four years.

Don’t Forget....

A

fleet of stunning Marcos sports cars will be at the Salthouse Fields in Clevedon on Sunday, April 14, providing a rare chance for car nuts to see them. Marcos enthusiasts and owners are bringing their cars down as part of a weekend to help celebrate Marcos founder Jem Marsh’s 83rd birthday. The cars will be at the Salthouse Fields from 10am-4pm and visitors will be able to see up to 50 cars from the early 60s up to the late 2000’s, including Marcos Coupe’s, GTs and the Mini Marcos range. There will also be a central marquee where visitors can find out more about the cars.
