RESTORING THE PHILIPPINES

I

n early November 2013, Typhoon Haiyan ravaged the Philippines. Over several long and torturous hours, the storm—considered by many to be the strongest of its kind to make landfall—claimed the lives of over 6,000 people. Another 27,000 were injured, 1.9 million left homeless, and an estimated 11 million total affected. Buildings were flattened. Bodies lined the streets. Entire towns and cities were destroyed. EHC workers were on the scene within days. They brought food, hygiene resources, and other necessities—and, of course, the Gospel—to the victims. They also brought sheets of iron (typical roofing material in the Philippines) and helped victims repair their collapsed homes. Following are firsthand accounts of the storm and its aftermath from just a few of the people EHC workers reached with the tangible love of Christ. “I am a mother of three children. Our house is not strong, so when we received word about the coming typhoon, we took shelter in a daycare center in our village with several other families. We never imagined the typhoon would be strong enough to destroy the daycare center! The roof was completely blown away. We were soaking wet, and we took shelter under the tables. We watched as sheets of iron were ripped off of

houses and torn apart like pieces of paper. After the rain, we returned to our house only to find that it had been destroyed. The roof was gone, and a tree had fallen on top of it. As we tried to pick up the pieces, I thanked God that we are all alive. We could have been killed if we had stayed in our home. Today, I thank the Lord for sending Every Home for Christ workers to our home. You are the first group of people to come here to help us move forward from our devastation. God bless you.” —Mrs. Teresita Parreno “I live alone in my house. When the typhoon came, I was so afraid as I heard the strong winds and rain. I hid under my bamboo bed, and I saw my roof and giant tree branches flying everywhere. Even the walls of my house were no match for the storm and were destroyed. Thank God, He kept me safe. Now He has brought you, and you came at just the right time. Thank you for the groceries, food, hygiene products, and the iron sheets to repair my house.” —Mrs. Fedila Flores “On the morning of November 8, our community was hit by the typhoon. My family could not leave our home for safer shelter; it was too difficult for my 70-year-old mother and our blind family member. My son’s house is next to ours, and his family took shelter in our house. As we hid in our home, we heard a big tree come crashing down on their home. If they had stayed in their own home, they could have died. We are so thankful to God for His protection for us! It is not easy to start life over again, but this is something we must face. Thanks to the help of EHC, the beginning of a new life is here. You are the first to respond to our needs. Thank you!” —Mrs. Renegia Lapura Recovery in the Philippines has only just begun. So much has been lost and destroyed, and only the love of Christ will restore this devastated people. EHC workers will continue to provide physical relief and assistance, as well as proclaiming the hope of the Gospel in every dark and desperate situation. Continue to pray for the Philippines as physical and spiritual rebuilding continues for months and years to come.
