National Breast Cancer Awareness Month Celebrating 25 Years of Awareness, Education, and Empowerment The National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) organization is a partnership of national public service organizations, professional medical associations, and government agencies working together to promote breast cancer awareness, share information on the disease, and provide greater access to screening services. In 2009, NBCAM celebrates its 25th anniversary. Since its inception a quarter century ago, NBCAM has been at the forefront of promoting awareness of breast cancer issues and has evolved along with the national dialogue on breast cancer. Today, NBCAM recognizes that although many great strides have been made in breast cancer awareness and treatment, there remains much to be accomplished. As we celebrate our 25th anniversary, we remain dedicated to educating and empowering women to take charge of their own breast health by practicing regular self-breast exams to identify any changes, scheduling regular visits and annual mammograms with their healthcare provider, adhering to prescribed treatment, and knowing the facts about recurrence. While October is recognized as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the www.NBCAM.org Web site is a year-round resource for breast cancer patients, survivors, caregivers, and the general public. We encourage you to visit our site in October and regularly throughout the year as we add updated breast cancer information and resources.

Can you Rollover your 401(k) Account? before you leave your employer?

I

n recent conversations I have had with some clients, the question has come up as to whether you call rollover your 401(k) to a Traditional IRA while you are still employed at your current job. There seems to be some confusion about this and rumors of the eligibility rules around whether or not this can actually be done. The answer is that you can actually do this type of withdrawal on a non-taxable basis under certain circumstances. Always consult a qualified CPA or financial advisor before doing this transaction. In a year where IRA money can be potentially converted to Roth IRA money, this may be a critical decision for your retirement. If you are 59 ½ years of age or older, and still working, most 401(k) plans allow “age 59 1/2 rollovers”. If a particular plan does not, they most likely allow rollovers at age 65. If you are under 59 1/2, your employer may still allow for an in service distribution based upon the company policies and the 401(k) summary plan 6  W3 LIFESTYLE  -  oXYGen Financial

description. Since an IRA will offer you many more investment choices than most traditional 401(k) plans, this is an opportunity you should certainly look into. We track these at oXYGen Financial, and can likely tell you if your employer offers this program. You CAN rollover (or otherwise withdraw) employer contributions, or employee (after-tax or rollover) contributions. And you can do so without any required taxes or penalties if the plan falls within the guidelines. If you are tired of the limited number of options in your 401(k) plan, this jut may be the solution for you.

Affordable and Modern: Why Shopping at Ikea is for Me By Sierra Bennett

O

k, I will be the first to admit I am a sucker for new room or house decor. I fall in love with the way a room looks from the energy it sends off. I feel inspired and creative to make a room with the same energy I see. However I do have a problem I’m not an interior decorator and although I have gone to college and got an art degree I am still not qualified to design a room. My attempts end up looking cheesy or lame. This is why I love Ikea, they provide an ideas and inspiration page on their website! It’s perfect, you can get rollover the pieces you love and it shows what it is and how to get it. Simple as pie. I think online shopping may be easier with Ikea except I am someone who likes to touch fabrics and see the way a lamp looks in person.

cute pillow and cover or a cute rug but what you really want to find is that lamp! Never fear there are maps and guides everywhere set up, there are even pencils and papers to write down what you like for the big stuff so an associate can help locate it for you. This may sound crazy but when I do go in the store I get inspired by different items that are found online and you walk away feeling a sense of accomplishment that you got everything you wanted and a new cute throw on sale as well.

Going to the store is a whole different story. You enter, you see beautiful displays and want to recreate it. Unlike shopping online you can’t just click your mouse for the item to be purchased. There is a whole upstairs with everything in every section you could possibly imagine for your home. It’s a bit overwhelming- ok that’s a lie, it is really overwhelming. The 10 Scariest Films of All Time

T

By Jack Blake

he 10 Scariest Films of All Time make for a great Halloween affair. It’s not just about the screams - plenty of movies can give a cheap thrill. The 10 scariest films of all time are all about establishing a haunting, terrifying atmosphere that will linger in your dreams for years to come. Not for the weak of heart, here are our 10 scariest films of all time.

that was originally considered a box office failure, but it’s popularity grew exponentially from its pure excellence.

The Silence of the Lambs (1991) - More realist than many of

3. Alien (1979) - The movie that spawned an entire franchise. Before the Alien vs Preditor prequels, Alien was a landmark horror film that stunned both critics and audiences with its sci-fi undertones and terrifying horror

the movies in this list, The Silence of the Lambs delves into the crime genre with more flair than has been seen since. One of the many films on this list

2. The Shining (1980) - If you’re a horror fan, and you haven’t seen The Shining, see it now. The Shining is better known for the Steven King book, but the movie tackles horror in its own uniquely terrifying way.

scenes. It was a tremendous success in sales, but its popularity has died off after so many sequels.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) - An all-time horror classic, 4.

the Texas Chainsaw Massacre is still embedded in popular consciousness. It’s 2003 remake failed to capture the same audience, and this remains a landmark film in many ways. 5. Paranormal Activity (2007) - Paranormal Activity is one of the most uniquely horrifying films ever released. The fact that it was produced for such a low budget (less than $200,000 USD) just makes the movie even more impressive. Quiet and brilliantly timed horror.

Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) - One of 6.

the landmark slasher films, Nighmare on Elm Street can be hard to watch. It’s scary, yes, but it’s also bloody and gory. It has only gained in reputation since it was released. 7. The Exorcist (1973) - One of the most famous

horror movies ever, The Exorcist is based in paranormal activity gone very wrong. Science and modern thought pale in comparison to the paranormal in this movie, and even the exorcist is unable to control the evil. 8. Poltergeist (1982) - This movie is so cursed, even the people who starred became effected by it. Poltergeist was a great movie that remains edgy and terrifying to this day, and the sudden deaths of many of its cast members only adds to its mystique.

Friday the 13th (1980) - Another classic, 9.

the original Friday the 13th was easily the best movie out of its series, and continues to be a landmark movie in pop culture. One of the major reasons why people know better than to go out in the woods by themselves. 10. Nosferatu (1922) While Nosferatu wasn’t the first horror movie, it set the standard for horror for an entire era of films.

10 Tips for

Organizing your Closets CNN living

G

et organized and clear the clutter with these clever ideas, methods, and products.

Tip 1: Clear it out Distinguish clothing and shoes that you wear and items that you need to get rid of. You can do this by the golden rule of closet organizing: If you haven’t worn it in a year, toss it. Also, if it doesn’t fit you well, it is time to get rid of it. Instead of hanging on to your “skinny jeans” until you lose a few pounds, donate them. Then, when you get down to your goal weight, treat yourself to a new, stylish pair of jeans.

16  W3 LIFESTYLE  -  COVER STORY

If you are on the fence about an item, “flag” the hanger. As you wear each item, remove the flag. At the end of each season, items that are still marked with a flag should be donated. If the item is in good condition and/or if you paid a lot for it, think about selling it at a local consignment store or online at a site such as eBay.

measurements in hand. Use every square inch of your closet. Hang shoe racks on the back of your closet door. Classic belt hangers with multiple hooks are also a good solution for hanging camisoles, bras, or scarves.

Tip 4: Get hung up

Tip 2: If the shoe fits

“Golden rule of closet organizing: If you haven’t worn it in a year, toss it”

If you are keeping your shoe boxes, label what is inside. We like the Post-it Durable Tabs because they offer a writable surface and are quick and easy to apply. Alternatively, invest in clear shoe boxes with drawerfront pulls; they allow you to see what’s inside so you can easily access your shoes.

Tip 3: Measure up Once you have whittled down your wardrobe, you need to assess the layout of your closet. Measure the space you have, making sure to utilize backs of doors, floor space, and all interior walls. When you go to shop for boxes, bins, and other necessary spacesavers, make sure you have your closet

Invest in the right kind of hanger for the type of clothing you are hanging. Use padded hangers for items made from delicate fabrics, plastic hangers for button-down shirts, and sturdy wood hangers for suit jackets as they help retain the shape of the items.

Remove all wire hangers (they don’t properly support your clothes) and plastic dry-cleaner bags (they don’t allow fabrics to breathe, keeping the chemicals used in dry cleaning in your clothes). Save time in the morning by coordinating your wardrobe. Sort by color, and hang like-types of clothing together (i.e. skirts, pants, blouses, etc.).

Tip 5: No sweat Sort sweaters, T-shirts, and other folded clothing by color as well. Always remove sweaters from hangers and fold them.

COVER STORY  -  W3 LIFESTYLE  17

Hangers will ruin the shape of sweaters over time. Store sweaters on shelves in manageable-sized stacks using sweater dividers to keep them from turning into leaning towers of Pisa. Even better, store them in sweater boxes with well marked labels.

Tip 6: Eyes have it Keep items you use frequently at eye level or below and items you rarely use higher up. Labeled boxes are good for storing things like bathing suits or turtlenecks because you can rotate them higher or lower in your closet depending on the season. Move any snow boots, rain boots, or other “outdoor” gear to your front hall closet (or mudroom if you are lucky enough to have one); restrict what goes in your clothes closet to dress shoes only.

Tip 7: Seasonal change It’s possible that no matter how much you try to edit and organize, you just have too much stuff to fit in your closet. If that’s the case, then you need to resort to a seasonal system by rotating your fall/ 18  W3 LIFESTYLE  -  COVER STORY

winter clothes with your spring/summer clothes. Covered clothing racks can be filled with out-of-season clothes and kept in your attic or basement or under your bed. Flat storage boxes can serve a similar purpose.

Tip 8: Linen closets Store folded sets of bed linens inside one of the set’s pillowcases. Group samesize sheet sets together on shelves. Use attractive, easy-to-attach tags to mark the edge of the shelf with sheet sizes.

Tip 9: Storing table linens Always clean and iron table linens after use. Tablecloths are best stored hanging from a pant or skirt hanger in your closet. Bundle clean, folded, matching napkins together in a paper or plastic bag and loop it over the top of the hanger.

Tip 10: China and crystal You don’t have to take up precious kitchen cabinet space to store your crystal and china unless you use both frequently. Find a safe place elsewhere in your dining room, basement, or other closet. Place paper coffee filters in between each plate and bowl before you stack each on top of one another.

Crazy and Fun Ho m e m a d e Costumes

C

reating a unique or weird Halloween costume shows originality and creativity. Try taking a popular phrase such as “killing time” and create a costume from that. Or take a popular movie or book title and add your own twist to the words. Weird and unique costume ideas can also be found on the internet. Many of these costumes are also home-made so there is very little expense in creating them.

wear a lei or flowered necklace, a camera around your neck, Bermuda shorts, paint your nose white (like lifeguards) and carry around some postcards or a map. 5. Typical Tourist: Wear a big floppy hat, flowered shirt and long shorts, flip-flop sandals and a camera around your neck. Carry a map and look lost all the time. 6. Cheating Husband: Men can wear a button down shirt that is buttoned all wrong, pants slightly unzipped, shoes untied or on wrong feet, lipstick kisses on collar, shirt, neck or even on pants and hair messed up. Tell people you didn’t dress in costume, you forgot about the party and just dropped what you were doing to come over. 7. Cheating Wife: Women can wear a skirt with the back tucked into pantyhose; hair messed up, make-up smeared and bra on the outside of shirt.

Here are some unique and weird ideas to help you this Halloween season.

8. Undecided: Wear solid colored clothing and cut question marks out of paper. Staple or pin them to your outfit and when people ask what you are tell them either “I don’t know, what am I?” or “It’s still a mystery.”

1. A Highway: Wear all black sweat suit, stick on white or yellow tape on your legs and chest to resemble lines in a road. Attach tiny cars and road signs onto your pants and shirt.

9. Ultimate Superhero: Gather together many elements of superhero costumes such as Superman’s Cape, Batman’s mask, Green Lantern’s ring, etc. and wear them all.

2. Nudist on Strike: Wear normal clothes and wear a sign around your neck that says “Nudist on Strike.” 3. Flasher: Wear regular clothes under a long trench coat. Make a belt out of flashbulbs or old cameras. Tell people you are a flasher and then flash at will. 4. Grim Reaper on Vacation: Buy or make a Grim Reaper outfit, but then

10. Twister Game: Buy a Twister game. Staple ribbon to two corners of the spinner and tie the ribbon under your chin so the spinner becomes a “hat.” Cut a hole in the center of the Twister mat and wear it like a poncho. All night long you can tell people to “put left hand on red” and so on. 11.

Web Surfer: Wear a wetsuit like

surfers wear, then drape yourself with fake cobwebs. 12. Matchstick or Cigarette: Wear all white clothing with a red stocking cap. For a cigarette try wearing tan pants or cut white pants short and sew brown material from the end of the shorts down to your ankles. This makes the filter. If you can make a belt or sash with a brand name of the cigarette, even better! 13. Leaf Blower: Wear regular clothes. Wear a hat with a leaf hanging down from the rim so that the leaf is in front of your face. When people ask what you are blow on he leaf and

make them guess. 14. Tornado: Wear all black or gray clothing. Sew strings of varying lengths all over your outfit. On the ends of the string, tie on tiny houses, people, cars, animals, etc. When people ask what you are, spin around fast and make sounds like a tornado. 15. Cereal Killer: Clothing should be kind of rugged and torn. Carry a bloody knife and have blood on your clothes. Attach labels or actual little cereal boxes all over your clothes. 16. Miss Matched: Dress in a gown such as a beauty queen might wear. Buy wide ribbon long enough for a sash around your shoulder. On the sash write “Miss Matched.” Then wear your makeup different on both sides of your face, your hair styled different, different earrings, different shoes and different colored nail polish. 17. Killer Bee: Buy a bee costume. Smear some fake blood on it and carry a fake weapon. 18. Spelling Bee: Buy a bee costume. Attach felt or Velcro letters to your suit and carry some around with you. If you can get enough little letters in Velcro your friends will have fun spelling words on you! 19. Peeping Tom: Wear regular clothes and a name tag that says “Tom”. Make a window frame out of cardboard, even add curtains if you are feeling real creative. When people ask what you are, hold up the “window” and peep through it. 20. Red Riding in the Hood: Buy or make a red cape with hood. Have tattoos on your arms, a spiked collar, lots of piercing, etc. and talk tough all night long.

ot questions about breast cancer and mammograms? We have answers.

Is breast cancer the most common cause of death for women? No. Although many women get breast cancer, it is not a common cause of death. Heart disease is the number one cause of death among women age 40 and above, followed by stroke, lung cancer, and lung diseases. Breast cancer is the fifth leading cause of death. In 2006 (the latest year for which statistics are available), 191,410 women were diagnosed with breast cancer, and 40,820 women died from the disease.1

What are the symptoms of breast cancer?

Celebrate Life with Breast Cancer Awareness Month! 24  W3 LIFESTYLE  -  HEALTH

When breast cancer starts out, it is too small to feel and does not cause signs and symptoms. As it grows, however, breast cancer can cause changes in how the breast looks or feels. Symptoms may include— • New lump in the breast or underarm (armpit). • Thickening or swelling of part of the breast. • Irritation or dimpling of breast skin. • Redness or flaky skin in the nipple area or the breast. • Pulling in of the nipple or pain in the nipple area.

• Nipple discharge other than breast milk, including blood. • Any change in the size or the shape of the breast. • Pain in any area of the breast.

screened for breast cancer, call your doctor’s office. They can help you schedule an appointment. Most health insurance companies pay for the cost of breast cancer screening tests.

What is a mammogram?

Are you worried about the cost? The National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (NBCCEDP) offers free or low-cost mammograms. To find out if you qualify, call your local program.

A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast. Doctors use a mammogram to look for early signs of breast cancer. Most women should have their first mammogram at age 40 and then have another mammogram every one or two years.

Why should I have a mammogram? Regular mammograms are the best tests doctors have to find breast cancer early, sometimes up to three years before it can be felt. When their breast cancer is found early, many women go on to live long and healthy lives.

Where can I go to get screened? Most likely, you can get screened for breast cancer at a clinic, hospital, or doctor’s office. If you want to be

How can I lower my risk of breast cancer? • Control your weight and exercise. • Know your family history of breast cancer. If you have a mother, sister, or daughter with breast cancer, ask your doctor what is your risk of getting breast cancer and how you can lower your risk. • Find out the risks and benefits of hormone replacement therapy. • Limit the amount of alcohol you drink.

Can men get breast cancer? Men can also get breast cancer, but it is not very common. For every 100 cases of breast cancer, less than 1 is in men.

8 Ways Doing Less Can Transform Your Life

M

ost productivity blogs and books will teach you how to do more, to get more done, to be more productive. I want to teach you to do less, to get less done, to be less productive. And while I’ve written about it before, I think it’s time we take a look at how this can really change your work life, and your life as a whole. Doing less is not about being lazy (though being lazy is a good start) — it’s about focusing on quality rather than quantity. It’s about getting off the hamster wheel of productivity, so that you can create something great rather than just being busy. Let’s take a few examples: 28  W3 LIFESTYLE  -  WELLNESS

• A furniture maker can mass-produce a ton of cheap furniture that will fall apart within a year. Another craftsman might produce way fewer pieces of furniture, but make them beautifully and solidly, so that they’ll last for generations. If he makes them well enough, they might even be sought out and remembered for their great design. • A programmer can write tens of thousands of lines of code, and produce a lot of software that works. A less productive coder can write a tenth of the lines, perhaps even editing down what she writes so that there’s less code, but they’re better written. This small program might be the most useful thing on many people’s computers, flawless code that just works. • A writer can churn out lots of words (hundreds of thousands, if not millions), but have his work read by relatively few.

Another writer can write a small but powerful blog post or ebook, and have the post be spread by thousands of people. In each case, the person produced less, but focused on quality. The impact of the smaller work was higher, and thus the time worked was better spent.

you are constantly switching from one task to another, constantly interrupted, constantly distracted. Do less, clear away distractions, single-task. . Work has more impact and spreads further and wider. When you do too much, your work is spread thinner, you have lower quality, and people won’t spread your work or give you awards for low-quality work.

3 4 5 6

I’d argue that by focusing on quality, you could work less and still have a higher impact. I’ve done this in my life — by cutting back on my work hours, I actually get less done but have a higher impact. I should note: this takes courage, to do less. You have to shed all the old ideas of working harder and working more and being more productive. You have to forget about what others thing about your work habits, and instead think about the impact the work has on the world and your life. You have to change the way you do things, and that’s never easy. But it’s worth the effort.

. More pride in your work, which feels good. Feels awesome, actually, to create something worth putting your name on.

Here are some ways this philosophy can change your life and work:

. More time for other things you enjoy. I use my time for exercise, or reading, and of course my family.

1

. Less hectic, busy schedule, less stress, more peace. Doing less leaves free to schedule less, leave more space in your schedule, work at a more human pace.

2

. More ability to focus, to find Flow, to work in the moment. When you are doing too much,

. People appreciate higher quality. Customers rave. Readers enthuse. Reviewers glow. Bosses promote. . More time for family and loved ones. Not a small benefit. Be sure that if you do less, you use the saved time for something important. Like quiet time for the ones you love.

7 8

. Free yourself up to create amazing things. Creating is hard to do when you’re busy and distracted. By doing less, you can create something great. www.zenhabits.net
