NHS Blood Donation Do Something Amazing... Give Blood A unit of blood has a shelf life of 35 days. Hospitals in England and North Wales need around 7,000 units of blood every day to treat patients in urgent need and each unit donated could help save or improve the lives of up to three people. Besides being crucial to care in A&E, blood is used to treat patients with cancer, blood disorders like sickle cell or thalassemia as well as women needing blood during childbirth. Everyone knows blood is literally a lifesaver for those who’ve been in an accident or need it to help survive treatments and operations. But for some, whose illness has no cure and that last

battle they face just can’t be won, a blood transfusion can help to improve their quality of life during their final months, weeks or even days. Blood is something we all expect to be there for us when we need it, yet only 4% of us give blood. Many people would not be alive today if it wasn’t for the generosity of blood donors. Anyone aged between 17-65, weighing more than 50 kg (7 stone 12lbs) and in general good health could potentially start saving lives by becoming a blood donor.

On our front cover we have featured the drinking fountain in St Barnabas Park – Many of us have probably seen this, but who knows why it is actually there? It is dedicated to Henry Finch, but who was Henry Finch?

The next donor sessions in our area are as follows:

Henry Finch owned a brewery in London and several pubs. He was a keen horseman and used to come to the area of Linslade hunting. He became quite attached to the area and during the 1870’s he purchased some 31 acres of farmland. The farmhouse on this land was demolished and The Gables was built at the bottom of Victoria Road, Linslade. It was a grand two storey house with a splendid conservatory, balconies and an enclosed veranda. It had a fine billiard room, stables and impressive wrought-iron gates. The house has now gone: all that remains is the billiard room (now known as Gables Hall) and the stables, now converted into housing. The wrought-iron gates have been moved to Grove Gardens, Dunstable. Henry Finch was a prominent local citizen, employer, town councillor and magistrate. He was well liked and was responsible

for Linslade getting a water supply. He was extremely generous and is well remembered for providing the organ in St Barnabas Church in 1889 and also for restoring St Mary’s Church, the original parish church in Old Linslade. Henry Finch donated the land for the recreation ground bounded by St. Barnabas Church and Leighton Buzzard Railway Station. At the time the land was prime building land which he bought and donated it to the people because he was concerned for the safety of children playing in the streets, he wanted to provide them with somewhere safe to play. He planted trees and built a strong retaining wall. The drinking fountain, partly paid for by public subscription, was erected in thanks for Mr Finch’s generosity and dedicated on August 13th, 1903. Initially there were pewter mugs chained to the necks of the ornamental lions from which the water flowed. Sadly the mugs have gone, the water no longer flows and the top of the monumental fountain is no longer there. The inscription on the fountain reads: ‘This fountain was erected to commemorate the generosity of Henry Finch, JP of “The Gables”, Linslade in making a free gift of this public recreation ground and his many other munificent acts.’ We would like to thank local residents Eric Evans, Ian Jones and Mike Moran who provided us with a wealth of information regarding Henry Finch for this editorial.

Leighton Buzzard Oxjam Music Festival

Park Farm Fisheries

An annual festival of music which is held each March in and around the town. It aims to give a platform for local musicians, singers and groups, whilst raising money for Oxfam.

This year’s Leighton Linslade Annual Oxjam Concert will be held on Wednesday 26th March at 8pm at the new Sacred Heart Church Hall on Beaudesert.

The 2013 festival was a great success with 37 events in total and a grand total of £6,010.28 raised for Oxfam - which means that since the first Oxjam event in 2007 we’ve made over £25,000 for the charity. Now the 2014 festival is almost upon us, so check the draft programme to see what is planned. Also, we produced a CD in 2011 with a compilation of music by local musicians and groups, and this year we are producing our second volume: why not buy a CD to help us send Oxfam more money!!

The concert is free admission but there will be heavies on the door to take a bucket collection on exit! Proceeds will be split between Oxjam and the Church Hall Restoration Fund. So put the 26th March in your diary and come early to get a good seat.

More information can be found on our website as well as a programme of events with new events for this year’s festival being added all the time – take a look at www.

The LLCB has expanded and improved greatly over the last year and promises a varied programme of concert band music with something to suit all tastes. We look forward to seeing you there!

“If everyone had chiropractic care from a young age we would all be in much better shape” says Kathryn Volker, owner of The Leighton Buzzard Chiropractic Clinic - Chirozone. Kathryn and her clinic have been helping the people of Leighton Buzzard since 2003. It has grown from being a small part time practice to now being available full time in larger, modern premises with ample free parking. The team here are extremely friendly, passionate and knowledgeable about what they do. They enjoy getting to know their clients as people and treat them in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere right on their doorstep with no lengthy uncomfortable visits out of town. After getting to know their patients they can then offer real lifestyle changing advice if necessary to hopefully stop any discomfort from returning.

Leighton Buzzard writer, Jill Steeples, has been celebrating the New Year with the publication of her second novel, ‘Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off’, a feel-good romantic comedy. Jill’s writing career took off after attending a creative writing course in Leighton Buzzard a few years ago. She began writing short stories and soon her work was being published in the popular women’s magazines in the UK, Australia and Scandinavia. Her work has also appeared in a number of charity anthologies.

Chiropractic is a primary healthcare profession specialising in the treatment of disorders of the neuromusculoskeletal system. In particular Chiropractic care has been recommended in the NHS guidelines for treatment of acute lower back pain and has been especially proven to help with pregnancy and childbirth. Chiropractic care is suitable for people of all ages, from babies to the very elderly, because practitioners are trained to consider each patient as an individual. We select from a wide range of hands-on techniques - from gentle pressure to direct manipulations; it depends on the problem and patient preference. It is the chiropractor's job to find a solution to fit the person - not just to treat the condition. No two people with the same condition present in the same way.

Leighton Linslade First Responders Leighton Linslade First Responders are a group of people trained by the East of England Ambulance Service (NHS Trust) to respond to emergency 999 calls within Leighton Buzzard and the surrounding area. Leighton Linslade First Responders are a new voluntary group in Leighton Buzzard. They are a group of trained volunteers who respond to 999 on behalf of the East of England Ambulance Service and carry all the kit needed to deal with life threatening conditions and save lives. They are dispatched at the same time as an ambulance but as they all live or work in the area they tend to be first on scene, giving the patient a greater chance of survival. Volunteers receive free training to provide them with vital basic lifesaving skills which can make the difference in a life or death situations before the arrival of an ambulance. A rapid response can make the difference between life and death; every minute makes a difference to a patient’s chances of survival. Our Community First Responders provide immediate care in the time before an ambulance crew reaches the patient. They don’t have a blue light on their car, and they have to stick to speed limits, but nonetheless this is an essential service provided by volunteers in Leighton-Linslade.

He said: “Since starting over a year ago we have attended over 100 life threatening calls. Our dedicated team of responders work very hard treating people and reassuring patients through a very distressing time in their lives. We have been overwhelmed by the support of the community. One of our main projects this year is to purchase and set up a public defibrillator which will be located in a central location for the public to use. This has been proved to increase people’s chances of survival if they go into cardiac arrest. We are looking for company sponsors and will be attending local events to raise money. Donna, a new recruit says “I’m a married mum of 3, an antenatal teacher and family first aid instructor. I decided to become a first responder because I wanted to put my experience to good use which would benefit the local community. The first call out is a bit nerve wracking but your training kicks in and you realise you have an important job to do and need to stay focused. It’s not about blue flashing lights (we don’t have them!) and sprinting on scene but about getting there safely, being level headed, staying calm and focusing on what is needed until the Ambulance Crew arrive. Ultimately it’s a very rewarding experience within a supportive team of like-minded volunteers”. If you would be interested in finding out more please email Stephen at

They are currently a team of five but are looking for more volunteers and support from the local community. Please search for Leighton Linslade First Responders on Facebook and like their page to follow what they get up to or find out how to get involved. They really want to expand and cover 24/7. They have recently received £250 from Leighton Buzzard Town Council following a grant application and the money will mean they can now purchase a new defibrillator and hopefully save more lives. The group was set up by Stephen Bennett, of Sandhills, who works nine to five as a HR Advisor and Trainer for a housing association based in Hemel Hempstead.

Use your lights – keep them on a timer. Make sure they are switched on early even if you leave them on whilst going shopping or on the school run. And remember; use the lights in a main room and not in the hall way so it looks like someone is home.

March March is named after the Roman god of war, Mars. It was the first month of the year in ancient Rome. Since March is the first month of spring, it was a logical point to begin the year. When the Gregorian calendar was adopted, it became the third month of the year. It is one of the seven months with thirty-one days. The Aquamarine and the Bloodstone are the traditional birthstones for someone born in March. The birth flower for March is daffodil. In the language of flowers, daffodils symbolize chivalry, respect, modesty and faithfulness. The most well known holiday of the month is on March 17th, St. Patrick’s Day.

Leighton Linslade has been a Fairtrade Town since 2005 and as part of this identity we celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight annually. Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world. Fairtrade Fortnight 2014 marks the launch of a unique campaign that aims to transform the banana industry to ensure those at the sharp end of the supply chain, the millions of struggling banana farmers and workers, get a fair deal. We’re asking everyone to help ‘Make Bananas Fair!’ and Fairtrade banana farmer Foncho has put his face and name to the national campaign. So join in the fun and ‘Stick with Foncho’ this Fairtrade Fortnight. Fair trade L e i g h t o n Linslade will be running a Fairtrade Treasure Hunt in the weeks running up to the Fortnight (running from 15th February) with the participation of a number of local shops. Entry forms will be available from the Oxfam shop and all completed entries will be entered into our FABULOUS fair trade Prize Draw on March 1st at our market stall on the High Street (by the Market Cross). To learn more about Foncho and Fairtrade bananas visit and check out Fairtrade Leighton Linslade on Facebook or follow @FairtradeLL on Twitter for more details of our local Treasure Hunt.

New self defence classes for women and children Two local residents Rachel Graham and Daniel O’Donoghue who have backgrounds in karate and martial arts have decided to start Sunday morning self defence classes for women and children. They aim to teach you and your children to protect yourselves from crime through physical technique, assertiveness and preventative measures but whilst having fun and in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere.

Rachel decided to start these local classes after working in London and reading the newspapers while travelling. She was overwhelmed by the amount of rape and attempted child abduction incidents that she was reading about and she decided she would like to help educate others in how to protect themselves and their children. Obviously these classes could not start at a better time in our local area with the couple of incidents that have been reported lately. In both cases the girls acted in a brave way and were lucky –

Family firm established 0ver 20 years

Rachel wants all women and children to have the knowledge and the confidence to act in similar circumstances thus being able to protect themselves and get away to safety and help. The classes will be held on Sundays 10.30-11.30am at Brooklands Social Club, Garden Leys - £5.00 per lesson or 6 lessons for £25.00 – Beginners and all levels of experience welcome. Contact Rachel on 07974 262897 orselfdefenceandsafetyawareness@ for more information or to book your place.

Leighton Buzzard Ramblers

Do you want to get rid of those extra kilos you gained over Christmas? Or do you just want to get some exercise in the fresh air in good company? Maybe you like walking, but don’t want to go out on your own? Then come out and join us on a walk. Leighton Buzzard Ramblers is a friendly and active group and we welcome walkers of all abilities. We have a varied programme with walks every Sunday and a mid-week walk at least once a month. Sunday walks alternate between shorter walks (generally 6 or 7 miles) and longer walks (generally between 8 and 12 miles), but we do also have some gentle strolls and some more challenging walks. One of our most popular walks has been the annual mid-summer 21 mile challenge walk; not as daunting as it sounds, this walk is divided into 3 sections so that walkers can choose to walk all or part of the distance. We usually walk fairly locally (the photo shows some of our members on a recent walk inspecting Milton Keynes’ famous concrete cows), but do sometimes go further afield. As well as

the regular programme, smaller groups of members have tackled some of the country’s long distance paths such as the Ouse Valley Way and the Monarch’s Way, sometimes entailing weekends away. As we are conscious of the environment (as well as petrol costs!) we meet at the library car park or Tiddenfoot to arrange car sharing. Alongside the walks, there is a regular programme of social activities, which have included BBQs, an annual dinner, a breakfast walk and various outings. We normally have at least one holiday a year. In recent years the group has been to Devon, Derbyshire and the Isle of Wight. Details of all our walks can be found on our website at as well as being published in the local paper and displayed in the library. You are welcome to “try before you buy”. Come along on a walk or two and decide whether you want to become a member.

Detective Inspector Zara Brown, leading the search for Neil, is leaving no stone unturned in the search for Neil: “This behaviour is totally out of character for Neil and as time passes our concern for his wellbeing is growing. I would urge anyone who can help trace Neil to contact the police urgently to enable us to make sure he is safe and well.” Neil is described as a white man with mild learning difficulties, 5’2” to 5’5” tall, with a small/slim build, short ginger hair and a pale complexion. He was last seen wearing a dark anorak style jacket with a hood, a dark top and jeans. Many of you may recognise Neil as he worked locally at Morrisons. The community has really pulled together and united and are willing for him to be found safe and well. A Facebook page has been created and hundreds of posters have been distributed and are being displayed both locally and nationally. Anyone who has seen Neil or has information about his whereabouts should contact Bedfordshire Police on 101.

Just a reminder that if anybody wants a stall at this year’s May Fayre they need to speak to Rotarian Alan Layzell on 01525 754820. Stalls in the High Street are provided with boards and covers and cost £25. Stalls on the Recreation ground (where you bring your own gazebo and set up) are £10.

Thrilled by the acceptance of the Town Mayor of LeightonLinslade coming along in the evening to the book launch, she tells us she read Tony’s new novel in preparation of the event. Councillor Amanda Dodwell went on to give a superb speech to a full room. This was a great opportunity for Tony to say thank you to friends and readers for their support locally. He enjoyed mingling and signing copies of his book. We have recently learnt that ‘A Flash of Lightning’ is going to made into a £3 million feature film and that the book has made the top 9 reads of 2014 by the top magazine ‘Marie Claire’. It is the second of the former City financier’s four books to get a film deal and follows ‘Megan’s Game’ which is already in development. The film is expected to be released in 2016. Tony has also recently been involved with judging the Youth Speak Competition - an event hosted by Leighton Buzzard Rotary held at Vandyke Upper School and running a Writing Master Class with year 8 and 9 students held at Cedars Upper School. For more information on Tony Drury see or

We are currently working on all the planning and entertainments and if our hopes are realises we should have something really novel for the people of Leighton Buzzard to marvel at! If there are any groups, charities, schools, churches or other worthy causes out there wanting to raise money (or their profile) the May Day Fayre is an ideal opportunity to get themselves known.

A personal plea... We have been contacted by Charlotte Hannan who has a personal plea to local businesses and companies. “Hi everyone. My family and I are running a charity event for Victim Support and Chums in May in honour of my Auntie Tracy who was murdered a few years ago in Flitwick. We are looking for any business/companies that are willing to donate their services or items for our raffle or get involved. It would be very much appreciated.” The event is to commemorate the life of Tracy Bagnall who was brutally murdered in August 2011 outside her parents’ home by her estranged husband. Tracy’s family have organised a charity evening featuring Joe Corrigan and his Signature Swing Band for what would have been her 40th Birthday. All money raised on the night will be donated to two charities, Victim Support and Chums who supported the family, especially Tracy’s 8 year old daughter, at this tragic time. The event will be held at the United Services Club, 160 High Street South in Dunstable on Friday 9th May 2014 7.30pm – 11.30 pm and tickets are £10.00 each. If you would like tickets to the event or you can help in any way with raffle prizes then please get in contact with Charlotte on 07805 654468 or email her at

This group started off as the Milton Keynes Spanish Meet Up but we have discovered that many people in the local area speak Spanish (or are Spanish/South America) and are interested in meeting others who enjoy meeting out and about for a drink... or a picnic... or to see a Spanish film... and have a chat practicing their Spanish along the way. We have also started some intercambio meet ups so that native Spanish speakers can practice their English too.

Creating Partnerships – Changing Lives A family in Linslade have just begun socialising their second Dogs for the Disabled pup. Many of you met their first pup, Ringo – a black lab, around town; he has now gone on to the next stage of his training and they have little Zen, a golden retriever - german shepherd cross. Zen will be with the Rourke family for about a year learning all the things a normal puppy would together with trips into the shops, lifts and on local transport. Look out for next month’s update on his progress. Dogs for the Disabled is a pioneering charity that trains assistance dogs for children and adults with physical disabilities, and families with a child with autism. Through practical tasks our dogs offer freedom and independence, but in addition an assistance dog becomes a reason to go out, giving a new found confidence that opens doors to fresh opportunities including friendships, hobbies, education and even careers. The partnerships we create between people with disabilities and dogs are life-changing.
