A Vocabulary and a Grammar Exercise 1
In this exercise, I explored the way lines, planes and volumes interact with each other in the space of a 9 inch cube. I applied each of these to the formal operation of shift to learn about how spaces are formed.
Scale, Movement, and Context Exercise 2
This exercise studied the scale of spaces compared to the human body, as well as how a person moves through a sequence of spaces. In 2.1, I worked with Shiori Green, Andrew D’Angelo, and Yuanting Peng to study and draft out a building on the Syracuse campus. In 2.2, I applied my learnings from exercise 1 and 2.1 to create a space for people. This space also used a 9 inch cube, lines, planes, volumes, and the formal operation of shift, but this time I was given a scale to work with.
House in Fontinha Exercise 3
In Exercise 3, I analyzed and diagrammed Manuel Aires Mateus’s House in Fontinha. I looked at its formal operations, formal elements, spatial sequences, context, movement, and scale.
The Harmonic Home Exercise 4
In this exercise, I designed a combined home, studio, and exhibition space for a composer. I applied knowledge from all previous exercises to consider context, distinction between public and private spaces, spatial sequences, and a consistent grammar.
