This ‘Landform’ building presents a concept that goes beyond just proposing a solution for the required programme: a fire st ation. In the surburban context of Asse, the agricultural fields located east of the town centre are increasingly under development pressure from either real est ate agents or industrial zones. The landform suggests that the current needs of the town of Asse (a fire st ation, a youth centre) be concentrated in one envelope, located close to t h e l o c a l t r a i n s t a t i o n . A d d i t i o n a l l y, t h e e n v e l o p e o f f e r s a ch a n c e for future development needs (a police st ation, a bus depot) to be added later on. The programmes within the envelope are visually connected by a c o h e r e n t f a c a d e s y s t e m , b u t s e p a r a t e d f r o m e a ch o t h e r b y a ‘ p u b l i c room’ that provides access to a commuter parking . The fire st ation itself is conceived as a combination of t wo zones that are as close as p o s s i b l e t o t h e z o n e o f e m e r g e n c y d e p a r t u r e : t h e f i r e t r u ck g a r a g e . One zone is horizont ally connected (ground floor) and comprises all the logistic functions, the other vertically (the volume above the

This project is more a narrative than a design: it interprets the physical landscape of Brussels (valley / forest cit y) as the root of its current social landscape (poor / wealthy cit y). The ‘valley cit y’ is 28 : City of Commons a new spatial scheme for Brussels

one of the poorest and most densely populated areas of Brussels, where over 70% of the population has Moroccan roots, over 50% is below the age of 30 and unemployment is three times as high as in t h e r e s t o f t h e c i t y. D e s p i t e t h e p o p u l a t i o n d e n s i t y, t h e a r e a a l s o cont ains the largest number of vacant sites in the Brussels region – an stunning but exciting paradox. 27
