President’s Message

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving. ‘Tis the season to give. Thank you to those of you who supported ASTRA’s fundraiser to support SWC students in need of bus passes. Last I heard, they only needed to sell 6 more! And, we were gifted with a $2,000 grant from International for our New Alternatives School Creative Library Space for At-Risk Youth project. A huge thank you to Shauna for writing the grant application! Our Christmas Party is on December 11 and I hope to see you there. I am excited for our new Adopt a Family project to support a military family in need this Christmas. Thank you for all the hard work each of you have done the first half of our club year. Bring on the New Year!

Be on the lookout for an invite to join our BAND group. You will receive a text or e-mail from Danielle with the link to download the app and sign up. You can choose to sign up with just your phone number or e-mail or link it to your Facebook or Google account. This app is similar to a Facebook group, but completely private, including your personal profile! If you choose to get the app, it will have our calendar of events; allows us to share pictures, videos, and files; and you can easily create a poll or sign-up sheet. Barbara Harris, Iracsema Quilantan, Shauna Stokes, and Sharon Vega attended the Rady Children’s Hospital fundraiser on November 2, sponsored by the Bonita Unit Auxiliary, and held at the Bayfront Hilton. Funds were raised for its mental health services. It looked like we all won something from the silent auction tables. Lisa Johnson, Lillian Leopold, Iracsema Quilantan, Carmen Richardson’s husband Rick, and Shauna Stokes attended the Southwestern College Foundation’s Jaguar Awards luncheon on November 8. It was held at the Sycuan Resort and Casino. Lisa is Chair of the Foundation’s Board of Directors.

We hope to see many members and their guests at our annual Christmas party on Wednesday, December 11, 2019 at the Chula Vista Golf Course. The deadline to RSVP with your dinner option (email was sent by Danielle) was Nov. 27. Dinner payment of $50 must be paid to Lily Ramirez by December 9th. A fun evening is planned with the $20 gift exchange, games, door prizes and music. If you would like to help and sponsor a military family gift cards are recommended. We look forward to a fun and festive evening!

Club Receives Altrusa International Foundation Grant We have been awarded a $2,000 fall grant from the Altrusa International Foundation for “A Creative Library Space for At-Risk Youth” to set up a library at Alta Vista School in Chula Vista, a school for foster youth with behavioral and academic issues, and students who are on probation.

We will be setting up a new library for the students. The school needs fiction and non-fiction books, as well as arts and crafts supplies and puzzle books, jigsaw puzzles, and board games. The space for the library currently holds textbooks for the students and is a storage area for equipment. The school has funding to purchase comfortable lounge chairs for the students. The plan is to keep the textbooks but consolidate them into a couple of the shelves, move out the equipment, and create a comfortable environment for the students. We will be doing this project in the next few months, with completion during the school’s spring break.

Days for Girls Update

Our club members approved using some of the Days for Girls International project funds to buy underwear and snaps for an enterprise in Rwanda. These women make the personal hygiene kits and sell them to earn an income, to be able to pay school fees and feed their children. There was an opportunity to fill six suitcases with supplies that a team leader in Pennsylvania, who was going on a mission trip there, would take for free. The Rwandan women have been unable to get supplies from Uganda due to issues between the two governments. We spent $1,383 on approximately 150 ten-piece underwear packs in girl sizes 10, 12, and 14, and 5,000 snaps. There will be a Days for Girls regional conference in Oceanside on January 17 and 18, 2020 and we have an opportunity to do volunteer work there. They need help with set up on Thursday, January 16, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, and clean up and take down on Saturday afternoon, January 18. They could also use help with setting up for break times and lunches on Friday and Saturday, but that appears to be an all day commitment. They are also looking for donations of gift cards to Target, Walmart, or Joanns. If anyone would like to volunteer, please let Shauna know by our club’s holiday party on December 11. altrusacv.org

A Mardi Gras Raffle Basket is in the works. It's a club effort, please add your Mardi Gras items.

Baskets! We have 22 baskets completed or nearly completed. Patti announced some items need to complete two baskets: dog items and baby items. Please bring your baskets/donations to the December Christmas party, we can't wait to see them!

Silent auction or raffle baskets will be deadline due at the December meeting/Christmas party. After they are wrapped at the 1/4/2020 wrap party they will be photographed and displayed on our website for our registered guests to view and to love. The baskets will be available for bidding at the event. Iracsema has offered her home to collect them and we will build them and photograph them there too. District Advisory Committee (DAC)

The District Advisory Council for Compensatory Education (DAC) is a Districtlevel committee made up of parents, staff and community leaders who advise the Board of Education and District staff on behalf of Title I compensatory education program participants. Title I is a federally funded program that addresses the academic needs of under-performing students. Each school site annually elects one parent representative and a parent alternate to vote if the representative is absent. DAC provides communication, information, and training for School Site Councils. Presently, there are 25 schools with schoolwide Title I programs in the District.
