RESIDENTIAL PROPOSAL, 2017 601 FT2

DESPITE BEING RENOWN FASHION ICON, CAROLINE DE MAIRGRET’S STYLE BALANCES THE SIMPLICITY OF FRENCH SOPHISTICATION WITH INDUSTRIAL ACCENTS. THE APARTMENT IS IDEAL FOR REGULAR VISITS TO NEW YORK AND PROVIDES A SECOND HOME FOR CAROLINE. THE GOAL WAS TO CREATE A COMFORTABLE OPEN SPACE WITH A SOCIAL AREA ABLE TO ENTERTAIN VARIOUS GUESTS, WHILE MAINTAING A SENCE OF PRIVACY IN THE SLEEPING S AREA. THERE IS A DIALOGUE THROUGHOUT THE SPACE BETWEEN DARK WOOD, STEEL AND BLACK MARBLE UNDERLINED WITH BOLD YELLOW AND BLUE. THE CHARACTER OF THE APARTMENT IS RATHER MASCULINE WITH A TEMPERED SENSE OF FEMINITY IN FORM OF ARTWORK AND SCULPTURES. IT IS A VISUAL REPRESENTATION G OF PARIS MEETING NEW YORK, THE DELICATE BALANCE BETWEEN BEAUTY AND FUNCTIONALITY.

P L A N N I N G

TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE APARTMENT’S UNUSUAL STRUCTURE, THE INTERIOR IS DESIGNED TO GRADUATE FROM NARROW HALLWAY THROUGH KITCHEN, TO BROADER SOCIAL AREAS COMPOSED OF THE LIVING AND DINING ROOM. TO EVOKE THE FEELING OF INTIMACY, THE SLEEPING AREA IS LOCATED BETWEEN THE NORTH FACING WINDOWS AND SEPARATED FROM THE REST OF THE SPACE BY A GLASS AND IRON WALL . TO UTILIZE THE LENGTH OF THE EAST-FACING WALL THERE ARE POINTS OF INTEREST SUCH AS METAL COAT STANDS, FORWARD FACING BOOKSHELF AND ARTWORK DISPLAY. DESPITE THE PRESENCE OF MULTIPLE BUILT-IN STORAGE SYSTEMS, THE SPACE IN SOCIAL AREAS ARE CUSTOMIZABLE ACCORDING TO CAROLINE’S NEED WHETHER IT IS WORK MEETINGS, INFORMAL GATHERINGS OR SIMPLY RELAXING BY HERSELF.

JACK SMITH 3065 POINT GREY RD, KITSILANO, VANCOUVER

RESIDENTIAL BCIT PROJECT, 2014

21 TO FIND A COMMON GROUND BETWEEN TWO GENERATIONS CAN BE CHALLENGE BY ITSELF. THE CLIENT JACK SMITH IS A SINGLE FATHER OF TWO TEENAGERS VANESSA AND NATHAN, WHO IS LOOKING FOR WELCOMING ENVIRONMENT WHILE HAVING PART OF THE HOUSE DEDICATED TO HIS BUSINESS. THE OLDER GENERATION IS REPRESENTED THOUGH MODERN DESIGN THAT IS ELEGANT, MINIMALISTIC AND TIMELESS. CONVERSELY, THE YOUNG GENERATION IS COOL, RECKLESS AND RAW. THEREFORE THE OVERALL DESIGN IS A DIALOGUE BETWEEN MODERN AND INDUSTRIAL WITH PREVALENT MASCULINITY. TEXTURE ACTS AS A KEY ELEMENT IN ACHIEVING INDUSTRIAL STYLE. USE OF RAW CONCRETE FOR FLOORING AND CEILING IS ACCOMPANIED BY WHITE BRICK WALLS AND EXPOSED STEEL BEAMS BETWEEN KITCHEN, DINING AND LIVING AREA. EMPHASIZING OPEN SPACE, ABUNDANCE OF DAYLIGHT, INDUSTRIAL WINDOWS, SKYLIGHT AND STEEL STRUCTURES HELP TO CREATE A FEEL OF AN INDUSTRIAL WAREHOUSE. BALANCE MANIFESTS ITSELF THROUGH THE USE OF BASIC SHAPES SUCH AS CUBES AND RECTANGLES IN FORM OF FURNITURE. BLACK AND WHITE LEATHER COUCHES IN SOCIAL AREAS ARE TO CREATE A STATEMENT OF SOPHISTICATED TASTE. THE COLOR SCHEME DELIBERATELY LACKS A DOMINANT HUE AND EMBRACES GRAYSCALE. THE COMBINATION OF MODERN AND INDUSTRIAL STYLE COMPLIMENTS EACH OTHER IN AN INTRIGUING WAY, CREATING AN INSPIRING PLACE FOR BOTH GENERATIONS TO ENJOY.
