The Tour de France is here so it’s time to get inspired by the pros and step up your own cycling... There’s no event in the world like the Tour de France. Far and away the most prestigious race in cycling, it’s brutal and beautiful at the same time, a cross between chess and all-out war – and it inspires us all to get out there and ride. Unlike the Tour de France riders, you might not be racing over 2,000 miles over the next few weeks but, whatever your ambitions, Evans Cycles have all the gear you need to get the most from your summer of cycling.

atch the Tour de France on TV and the riders are so effortlessly cool in the latest cutting-edge kit, using the best bikes and equipment available – and, let’s be honest, we all want to look like that. We’ve got some good news: you can. Okay, a professional-level road bike isn’t cheap, but if it’s what you’ve got to have, we can help, but you don’t have to spend all that much to look the part though, or to get your hands on a bike or gear that borrows features from the top.

Specialized TT2 Aero Helmet (121544)

As well as an expensive team replica bike, many brands make a much more affordable bike in the same livery. And these bikes will often feature trickle-down technology – elements of the design of the professionals’ bikes but without the price tag. So, they might have the same frame geometry or similarly shaped tubes, for example or even be the frames the pros were racing just a few seasons ago. Then there are the components. If you like the pedals that Bradley Wiggins uses, or Mark Cavendish’s handlebars, you can get them. Most team clothing is available too, and it’s often exactly the same as the kit the boys in the peloton are wearing – same fabrics, same cut, same everything. Whatever gear you want for summer cycling, Evans Cycles can help you out. Profile Century ZB Aero Bar (101921)

BMC was founded in 1986 by American Bob Bigelow to assemble bikes for wholesale distribution under the Raleigh brand. In 2001, thanks to the involvement of current owner Andy Rihs, investment was directed into engineering, design and marketing to position the brand as a high-end leader with Swiss roots that embraced the company philosophy of Style, Passion, Precision. In an intensely competitive market BMC has turned heads with its innovative highend products and strong marketing through

international professional teams. Through successes in frame technology, with help from external partners and through focused investment in marketing BMC has turned the corner from an unprofitable company in 2001 to become the only Swiss bicycle brand that is successful against international competition.

meet the team behind the team Evan’s Cycles’ BMC Brand Manager, Neil Webb, was lucky enough to be granted unique behind-thescenes access to the BMC Racing Team at the Giro. He followed the usually hidden heroes as they prepared, supplied and restored the riders on this crucial mountain top stage.

during: 5-7 Two support vehicles and three team cars are all ready to go. We often see riders being handed bottles and gels from the team car in races, this is the other side – door well stocked with enough gels and sachets to get most of us to the moon!

after: 8-10 The helpers who’ve handed out the bags and bottles race to the stage finish to assist the riders as they finish another super-tough day in the mountains. This is the only time you’ll see a pro cyclist drinking ‘fizz pop’ – it’s the quickest way for them to get the minerals and sugars they need on finishing. For the big names and jersey holders there are still podium ceremonies to attend, press conferences and interviews with journalists and fans alike.

Once the bikes are taken from the truck to the cars it’s all hands on decks in the truck to make sure there’s enough food for everyone. As well as the riders there’s the mechanics, soigneurs, assistants and drivers - everyone needs to eat! The rider’s personal stuff goes into Team Issue cases, very swanky.

95 kilometres in, the riders grab lunch whilst riding at full pelt in the bunch. Any missed bags are passed to the car and items handed out individually.

Grazie Mille Signors e signoras. We were especially lucky to spend a day with the BMC Racing Team at the Giro. A huge thank you to all the team members for allowing us to buzz around them on such an important day.

our shorts and jersey might be your most eye-catching clothing, but you need to get the rest of your kit right too if you’re going to ride in maximum comfort.

that you’ll actually feel cooler wearing one than going without. Glasses don’t just look cool they protect your peepers from insects and pinging stones, and you can get lenses that suit different light conditions, while padded mitts will reduce the pressure on your hands and save your palms if you ever stack.

A good base layer underneath your jersey makes a whole lot of sense. It’ll shift sweat away from your skin to keep you feeling comfortable and also protect you against road rash should you ever come a cropper around a tight bend.

Last but by no means least, you need some bike-specific shoes that’ll transfer all your power efficiently to the pedals. If you can stretch to carbon soles, go for it – they can’t be beaten for lightweight rigidity.

Having a good, well-fitting helmet is vital too. Hopefully, it’ll never have to save your noggin, but you might as well wear one just in case – and these days decent lids are vented so effectively

Felt AR3 ‘10 (129429)

At the heart of every Felt is a genuine love of speed. The man behind the name, Jim Felt, made a name for himself in motocross and built his first frame for one of the stars, Johnny O’Mara ‘The O-Show’ to stay fit on. The next year he won the California State Championship in the time trial. Word spread of his success aboard the Felt designed and built frame. The rest, as they say, is history.

When Trek began in 1976, their mission was simple: Build the best bikes in the world. The nine yellow jerseys in Trek’s trophy case didn’t come easily. They came from the hands and hearts of the best racers in the world, the best team directors, and the top designers, engineers, and fabricators. Trek know how to put all the right pieces together to make the world’s best bikes.

Founded in 1958 by Ed Scott, the company originally specialised in ski equipment and it wasn’t until 1986 that they produced their first mountain bike. More important was the invention of an aerodynamic handlebar, with which Greg LeMond won the 1989 Tour de France. The racing bike sector has continuously expanded and Scott now see Tour success with Mark Cavendish and the HTC Columbia team.

e’d all like to be riding around on a bike dripping with Shimano’s electronic Di2 shifters, sexy SRAM Red or Campag’s top-dollar 11-speed Super Record, but sadly not all of us have that sort of money. The good news for the more budget-conscious rider is that all that technology soon trickles down into the more affordable groupsets, and the fact that there’s three major players now means the pace of development is faster than ever.

2011 shimano 105 Now in stock!

In Shimano’s world the latest Ultegra groupset shares much of its workings with Dura-Ace, including the Carbon levers and that natty hollow chainring, and the lever technology has now made it down as far as the brand new 105 equipment. Campagnolo now offer their 11-speed setup in four of their groupsets: Super Record, Record, Chorus, and Athena. It’s the same with SRAM: up until now they’ve been been competing at the higher price points but their new Apex groupset brings DoubleTap shifting down to real world price points. If you’re on a budget then Shimano have you covered. Sora and Tiagra equipment performs as well as, if not better than, higher priced groupsets from years gone by.

In 1899, just before the turn of the century, Japan’s Fuji bicycle brand was born. When the first bikes roll off the line, Fuji engineers recognize the need for designs that perform at a higher level.

The Fuji line features an array of engineering refinements, both subtle and striking - the result of years of fine-tuning and expertise. Fuji has gone to great lengths to ensure that the technology their World Champions ride exists throughout their entire line of bikes.
