YOLR - EF 25

As children, our days were filled with boundless curiosity, discovery, and daydreams. Now that we’re a bit older and our days are drowned in routine and deadlines, finding time to appreciate the beautiful world around us can be challenging. Inspired by memories of childhood – where every corner held a secret and every question sparked discovery – Your Other Living Room (YOLR) invites you to reclaim that sense of wonder and imagination.

Drawing energy from Rothbury, Michigan – the forest within Double JJ Resort and the nearby Great Lakes – YOLR is a space to play, explore, and reconnect with the present moment. Step closer, see your surroundings with renewed vision, and let Your Other Living Room remind you: beauty and joy are always within reach.

Your Other Living Room is not just a collection of found objects and furniture (a human-scale assemblage) — this is a selfcontained world where nearly every item has a secret.

Each component is specially modified to transmit sound, cause unexpected tactile sensation, emit colorful lighting, or produce optical illusions; handmade kaleidoscopes built into everyday objects encourage closer inspection of your surroundings; furniture fabrics covered in various glow in the dark or thermochromic (heat activated) coatings will radiate at night; and augmented reality projection mapping will breathe life into stationary fixtures.

Will you find out how that mysterious light began glowing in the distance; could it be because you sat on this chair?

Is this sofa a piano?

Does the painting actually get brighter the longer I look at it, or is that my imagination?

Is the coffee table getting warmer the more I touch it?

Inspired by the five Great Lakes – Superior, Huron, Michigan, Erie, and Ontario – the overall shape of YOLR celebrates the world’s largest freshwater system.

Sand is used as the primary ground material to reference Lake Michigan’s shores, which has the planet’s biggest freshwater dunes. The beige-colored sand (mixed with phosphorescent pigment) will glow blue at night to represent the five Lakes. Landscape fabric will go down between the sand and soil below, acting as a barrier, while permitting normal drainage and simplifying cleanup.

The driving force for using Michigan as the inspiration of form is to remind festival-goers of their current geographical location. Oftentimes, people travel for particular events and forget (or don’t think about) where they are, so this is a nod back to their present position.

As you spend time with friends, newcomers, and furniture that is alive, at what point do you realize this is no ordinary hangout space?

Overall Project Dimensions

Area: 580 ft2

Longest Spans: 42’-0” × 28’-0”

The ideal location for Your Other Living Room is deep within the Forest to emphasize the juxtaposition between nature and the built environment (the more trees, the better). The installation orientation is most important, as it should be one where the majority of people will first see and then approach the front door.

Dear Selection Committee,

I am excited to share the proposal Your Other Living Room as part of Electric Forest’s 2025 Art Installation Sponsorship Program!

Your Other Living Room is an ever-evolving organism shaped by the site-specific magic and nature of Electric Forest and the people who inhabit it. Designed as a space for exploration and connection, this participatory microworld invites you to investigate your surroundings, make new friends, and uncover beauty in the unexpected.

Last year, my debut art installation EARTHBALLS was featured at Art Basel in Miami. This interactive monument to nature and sustainability was subsequently donated to The Center for Great Apes in Wauchula, FL, a wildlife sanctuary caring for rescued orangutans and chimps. Similar to EARTHBALLS, Your Other Living Room is an intervention created to inspire curiosity, encourage introspection, and promote community-building.

Since 2022, I have been captivated by the freedom, connection, and cultural expression of the Forest community; three years later, I still want to give back and this is the best way I know. Come sit, stand, perch, or lay down in Your Other Living Room. Be present, look around, and remember that everyday life is filled with moments of beauty — if we take the time to notice.

I look forward to discussing this proposal further with you and bringing this project to life. Thank you very much for your time and consideration.

Happy Forest!
