History Dr. Isabella Walton Cannon endowed the Isabella Cannon International Center in 1999. Born May 12, 1904 in Scotland, Cannon made history when she became the first woman elected mayor of Raleigh at age 73. She was affectionately known as “the little old lady in tennis shoes” and was highly respected for her commitment and service to both Elon University and her country. She went on to give a generous sum of $1 million to build the ICIC, to create opportunities for Elon University to be connected to the world.
