Personal Project VR Development

Wanted to make my work more current and add another technical skill to my understanding.

I decided to try and create a VR 360 scene. I started by doing a lot of research, the whole time I had in mind that I would build up a new illustration for it related to the book.

I decided to try and play around with my long ‘cityscape’ scene following steps online purely just to understand the way it works, not actually expecting it to work on this image. The images used have to be 2:1 in ratio and the strip scene wasn’t far off that. Photoshop also allows you to build up the drawings whilst in 3D mode so I found I was actually able to build the scene up to work really well.

I loved bringing my work to life and thought it could be a really good way to engage children in my illustrations in a popular and current way. I considered this could be through phone apps that may support books that could be both educational or fictional. For example I really wanted to have another go at this taking a more educational approach and illustrating the lifecycle of a bee but I found there wasn’t really enough time as I wanted to focus on a few other things before submission. This is something that I hope to explore further in the future though- especially as it works particularly well on my website.

3D mode in Photoshop a nightmare to navigate.

More straight forward than I ever expected - given me the confidence to look a bit deeper into these kinds of technologies and the relationship they could have to my work in the future. Particularly in regards in interactivity with educational illustration I think there could be a lot of opportunity in that market.

One thing I couldn’t quite figure out was how to make the floor flat as opposed to a globe. It didn’t have much effect on the final outcome for this piece but in the future I would like to explore that further.

Some sites are better at displaying 360 images than others. I use Wix for my website which has a good plugin for 360 images so I will attach the link below. I did also make a few mp4 video files of myself scrolling around the scene to display on platforms that don't accept 360 files which i will also attach below.
