Penguin Student Design Award Adult Non-fiction Award: A Brief History of Time, from the Big Bang to Black Holes by Stephen Hawking.

Research •

I skimmed through the book and made a note of the key points. To understand thingsI have to visualise them first. I did a bit of research online on specific subjects and looked at some diagrams like the one shown here.

•

I started trying to create some shapes and spacey drawings from these, simplifying them down and trying to make them more shape knowing I wanted to take a digital approach.

•

The roughs developed and became a spacey, night sky scene attempting to use a variety of elements discussed in the book in a simple way.

•

The background is intended to have a bit of a black hole type effect so while being very dark it also has a little bit of depth too.

Final Thoughts •

Because of the word count limit on our blogs I am hoping that the images speak mostly for themselves in terms of development and thought processes.

I felt the ‘mobile’ effect to be too childish as well as the use of pink. Changing the colour palette to greys and blues with the yellow had a more adult feel.

Maybe the final result is still a bit childish but really I am quite happy with it too. I think it has been my most successful book cover so far as it is eye catching and I have been able to incorporate type well.

If I were to do it again I would have liked to have built it up on illustrator and perhaps been more daring with the colours. Maybe the use of Adobe Illustrator could have made the final result a bit less childlike and more audience appropriate.

I have been trying to work on my text this year to create a more consistent result. I’ve come to realise that I just need to relax with it as i do when i draw and a more confident style is gradually emerging.
