LEARNING DEVELOPMENT

Officer Formation Eva Burrows College includes an Officer Formaton Stream for anyone wanting to become a Salvation Army Officer. Officers are Christian leaders who have chosen full time ministry engagement within the denomination, ready to be depoloyed for the work of the Kingdom.

OFFICER FORMATION

Considering making your next step towards becoming a Salvation Army officer?

In preparation for this engagement, those who are accepted into the Officer Formation program undertake a range of training experiences to help them learn and grow in their personal and spiritual development. During this formal training period the students are called cadets. The focus of this training is to equip every cadet for future responsibilities of ministry and to nurture their desire to impact the world with Christ’s love and grace. This time of formation becomes an essential and significant opportunity to better understand their own particular calling and build a deeper spiritual connection with God.

VOCATIONAL TRAINING

The Officer Formaton Stream offers a holistic approach to the formation of Officers. It focuses on deepening self-knowledge, developing a higher level of educational and theological literacy as well as engaging with a variety of mission and ministry opportunities and contexts. All three areas are equally important to the healthy and holy formation of a ministry leader. The key to any role undertaken by a Salvation Army Officer is that they are spiritually mature and emotionaly resilient, which will enable them to provide the leadership necessary for the purpose of ministry: ‘wherever there is hardship or injustice, Salvos will live, love and fight alongside others to transform Australia one life at a time with the love of Jesus’.

HIGHER EDUCATION

If you have a growing sense that God is prompting you to engage in fulltime ministry we invite you to call us and together we can explore the right pathway for you to take.

SUPPORT SERVICES

To prepare for my role as an officer with The Salvation Army, I am currently undergoing training at Eva Burrows College as a cadet. I would like to thank the Officer Formation team for their support and time throughout my entire journey. As well as practical training, I appreciated the educational component of this program, which enabled me to establish a solid theological foundation. Through the holistic training program, I am confident I will gain the professional knowledge and discipline needed for life, mission, and service. I hope to use what I’ve learned to help others and see their lives transformed through the love of Christ.

Wherever there is hardship or injustice, The Salvation Army will live, love and fight alongside others, to transform Australia one life at a time with the love of Jesus. OFFICER FORMATION

FAQs B ECOMI NG AN OF F ICER IN T H E S A LVAT ION A R M Y

What is a Salvation Army Officer? Officers are the equivalent of full-time clergy in other Christian denominations. A person must be a soldier of The Salvation Army before they can become an Officer. An Officer is a full-time minister of religion who is trained, commissioned and ordained by The Salvation Army, and is committed to the wider vision of The Salvation Army.

What is Officership? Officership refers to the period of active service of an Officer who is an ordained minister of The Salvation Army. This full-time ministry is a lifelong commitment to living out God’s purpose to serve all people who need to hear the good news of God’s love and experience his saving grace.

What happens after the training? After ordination, Officers are appointed to various roles in The Salvation Army and deployed across the Australian territory. Appointments can vary from congregaton leadership through to chaplaincy and work within the social services. Officers within their first five years of full-time ministry will continue to be supported by the Officer Formation team. The Officer Formaton Stream team encourages every graduate to continue building on the foundations laid during their time as a cadet.

make a difference in the world. The cofounders of The Salvation Army, William and Catherine Booth, believed that an authentic Christian faith must be lived out in action. Their faith compelled them to respond to the needs of those most vulnerable and marginalised in society, offering practical assistance as well as spiritual care. This ethos still underpins the heart of service and urges all Salvationists to be ready to allieviate suffering with compassion and genuine care, and to work to see communities flourish.

How does Eva Burrows College equip you for the life of an Officer?

Why become a Salvation Army Officer?

The Officer Formation Stream team provides the necessary program for the formation and training of future Officers. The training model provided is holistic, individualised, flexible and case managed. The training period varies from one to three years depending on prior ministry and life experience, educational and family responsibilities.

There are many reasons why a Salvationist might become a Salvation Army Officer. Over the years many people have entered training witha deep desire to

placement. This allows for greater individualised training and more access to ‘on-the-job’ experiences. A training partnership is formed between the Officer Formation Stream team and the Local Placement Officer and their faith community. Cadets are enrolled in higher education classes as well as completing non accredited Salvation Army service requirements learning modules while on their placements. This integration of education with experience creates a direct and immediate opportunity for the theory to become practice.

What is the three-fold formation of training? The holistic approach of training officers of The Salvation Army is delivered through a threefold process which integrates theological and educational formation, spiritual and personal formation and mission and ministry formation. Spiritual and Personal Formation Our focus is upon deepening your self-knowledge as well as your responsiveness to the gracious presence of God in your life and your practice of key spiritual disciplines. A range of opportunities (from class-based, to experiential practices, to personal reflection) will all contribute to this process. PASSION + PURPOSE + PROFESSION

Theological and Educational Formation Our focus is upon developing a required level of educational and theological literacy. Key educational units will help you to develop the broad theoretical foundation which will serve as the building blocks for your future learning, intentional reflection, and practice of mission and ministry. Mission and Ministry Formation Our focus is upon engaging with a variety of mission and ministry opportunities and contexts to apply learning in practice. Though it is a learning environment, the opportunities for mission and ministry are in real settings and will be a key element of training.

Research Awards Emma

Eva Burrows College shares in The University of Divinity’s long tradition of research excellence. The University produces world-class research in all theological disciplines. Eva Burrows College actively fosters a vibrant research culture through research projects, publications, conferences, and seminars.

HI GHER EDUCAT ION LECT UR ER

Students who meet the entry requirements may enrol in our higher degrees by research (HDRs). Prospective HDR students may enrol in a research methodology unit in order to prepare for their research project.

H IGH E R E D U CAT ION BY RE SE ARCH

Research Supervision Research supervision is available in Biblical Studies, History, Humanities, Languages, Philosophy, Religious Studies, Systematic Theology, and Theology: Ministry and Mission.

Master of Philosophy (MPhil) The Master of Philosophy is a higher degree by research in divinity or one or more of its associated disciplines and is designed for individuals who bring a foundation within this disciplinary range. The purpose is to qualify individuals to apply an advanced body of knowledge in divinity or one or more of its associated disciplines in a range of contexts and to provide a pathway for possible further learning.

The questions I am asking have come from reading Elisabeth Moltmann-Wendel’s book I am My Body and from my experience of being a Corps Officer in various Corps in Australia. As I looked around at the women in my Corps appointments and considered my own embodiment, I sensed a theological void. This led me to consider a return to Mary, the mother of Jesus. In an article written for

the Warcry, Catherine Booth suggested that the Protestant church experienced a great loss by rejecting Mary. Catherine claimed that Mary’s place in the incarnation was an act of restoration for all women.

All candidates must attend a minimum of eight hours of research seminars each year at the University and either a University Research Day or a research conference each year.

I hope that my research might contribute to a theology that takes seriously the experiences of a woman’s body as site for divine encounter and knowing. The benefits of this research are also very personal as I grow in the disciplines of perseverance and of managing my time and resources.

The Doctor of Philosophy is a higher degree by research in divinity or one or more of its associated disciplines. The purpose of the Doctor of Philosophy is to qualify individuals who apply a substantial body of knowledge to research, investigate and develop new knowledge in one or more areas of investigation, scholarship or professional practice. PhD candidates present their research in a thesis of no more than 100,000 words that is examined by at least two external examiners. All candidates must attend a minimum of eight hours of research seminars at the University and either a University Research Conference or a research conference approved by the candidate’s College during each year of candidature.

Doctor of Professional Practice (DPP) The Doctor of Professional Practice is a higher degree by research in divinity or one or more of its associated disciplines. It is designed for experienced practitioners to develop advanced knowledge and skills relevant to their professional context. It equips mature professionals to develop their research competency and their critically reflective practice, and to further develop their theoretical knowledge. Students undertake advanced coursework and independent supervised research, integrated critical thinking, spiritual awareness, and theological engagement with a body of knowledge and lived experience through enquiry-based research to address complex problems and initiate positive and sustainable change in their professional context. By engaging with theory and practice, candidates contribute in significant ways to the application of knowledge and/or practice within diverse professional contexts.

HIGHER EDUCATION

I have been a collector of questions for many years and engaging in research allows me to take a closer look at some of those questions and begin to find answers.
