Ultrasound Technicians Certifications
The role of an ultrasound technician involves buiding specific set of skills to perform tasks pertaining to a particular part of the body. It is therefore important for an ultrasound technician to gain this specific information through external sources other than graduate degree so that they can excel in their respective jobs and also stand out of the crowd while applying for a job. One such external source from where this knowledge can be gained is through Ultrasound certifications. Usually these certifications require a time span of anything between 6 months to one year. These certifications will also help the technician to have cross-medicine knowledge, i.e. knowledge of another domain of medicine. These certifications are quite content and rigorous enough to make sure that students learn a whole lot of new information. The major organizations for these certifications are: American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) It is the biggest name in world when it comes to ultrasound certifications. It offers a variety of ultrasound certifications in any of the specific streams of ultrasound such as echocardiography for adult, child and fetus; vascular technology, Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonography in abdomen, nerves, breast or fetus and many more. There are many pre-requisites that a student or professional must meet in order to be eligible to take this course:
Individuals with non-CAAHEP accredited graduate degrees: These individuals must have completed 2-year full time graduate degree in Sonography. They should also have done some kind of internship in Sonography. Moreover, they should have a minimum of 12 months of prior work experience in ultrasound jobs. In addition to the above mentioned requirements, the certification makes it obligatory for these individuals to attend clinical courses and also to attend an internship of the same. Individuals with CAAHEP accredited graduate degrees: These individuals have met all the prerequisites for this certification and can enroll in any of the available course. Individuals with bachelors’ degree in streams other than Sonography: These individuals must have a minimum of 12 months course credits in diagnostic medical Sonography. Again, the certification makes it obligatory for these individuals to attend clinical courses and also to attend an internship of the same.
Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) It offers certifications in cardiac Sonography. Pre-requisites include either minimum of 2 years work experience in cardiovascular technology, or one-year work experience in cardiovascular technology plus associate degree in science or health, or 6-months of work experience plus a bachelor’s degree in allied health. American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) It offers certifications in vascular Sonography, breast Sonography and many more. It conducts entrance examinations of its own which the student must clear in order to be eligible for the certificate. Also, an associate degree or bachelor degree is required.
