EUSA EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETING

WORKING MEETING

EUSA representatives Mr. Alberto Gualtieri, President, Mr. Matjaž Pečovnik, Secretary General, Mr. Leonz Eder, EC Member and Mr. Thomas Loher, Legal Advisor met on a working meeting on May 13, 2009 in Zurich to discuss legal matters related to EUSA activities and the agenda of the next EUSA Executive Committee Meeting.

EUSA Executive Committee met on its second meeting this year. The meeting took place in Dolce La Hulpe Congress Centre in Brussels, and was hosted by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). The Executive Committee approved progress reports of the 2009 European Universities Championships, Symposium, Convention and General Assembly. The Final Reports of the EUC Volleyball and EUSA Cup in Aesthetic Group Gymnastics were also approved. A Study Group was established to prepare the guidelines for the EUSA Sports Program.

Next meeting of EUSA Executive Committee will be organised from October 15-18, 2009 in Zadar (CRO).

The University Sports Federation of Serbia (USSS) organised on May 20, 2009 in Belgrade its 2 Extraordinary General Assembly. Mr. Nebojsa Jovanović was elected on the position of the USSS President.

The directors of the Swiss University Sports Organisations as well as the University Sports Teachers met in Zurich to the annual conference.

The President of the Swiss University Sports Federation (SUSF), Andreas L. SLOVENIA

Slovenian University Sports Association (SUSA) organised in cooperation with its member organisations the Slovenian Festival of Student Sport on Friday, May 29, 2009 in Maribor. The festival encompasses national university championships in volleyball, basketball, futsal, tennis, table tennis and badminton; in combination with social activities and entertainment.

At the opening ceremony, the President of SUSA, prof. dr.

Otmar Kugovnik, congratulated the participants in combining sport with their studies and wished them best of luck in both for their future. The Vice-Mayor of Maribor, Mr Andrej Verlic, also attended the event, wishing the participants good luck and fair matches. At the closing ceremony, the President of the Maribor University Sport Federation Mr. Marjan Pučnik congratulated the winners and awarded them medals and trophies. With the Festival of Student Sport, the majority of national university sports in Slovenia have concluded for 2009. Beside the sports featured in the Festival, SUSA also organises championships in shooting, orienteering, rowing, beach volleyball, golf, alpine skiing and snowboarding.

PORTUGAL

From 20 to 25 of April, the cities of Porto and Gaia hosted the final stages of the National University Championships 2009, an event organized by the Polytechnic of Porto. Over a week more than 2,000 athletes, representing 30 institutions, met to fight for 71 titles of

national university champions, spread over 15 collective and individual sports. This event was the culmination of a year of competition that began in November with the qualification tournaments, adding the best athletes of University Sport in Portugal. The opening ceremony had the presence of Mr. Secretariat of State for Youth and Sport, the Vice-President of Gaia Council, the President of Polytechnic of Porto and as special guests and godparents the Olympic athletes Nuno Fernandes and Rosa Mota, gold medalist in Seoul 88.

At its last EC meeting, FISU attributed the 4th World University Floorball Championship 2010 to Sweden. The championship will be arranged May 13-16 in Umeå, which is an exceptionally strong floorball city (16 teams in the three highest leagues in Sweden). The local organizer will be the Student Sport Club IKSU, who will host the championship in its own facilities, which constitutes the largest fitness centre in Europe. The championship has room for eight women’s end eight men’s teams. SUSF warmly invites you to participate!

On May 23, 2009 FISU attributed in Brussels the 2015 Summer and Winter Universiade. The candidate for the 2015 Winter Universiade was Granada (ESP), while the candidates for the 2015 Summer Universiade were Edmonton (CAN), Gwangju (KOR) and Taipei City (TPE).

During the day, the presentations of the bidding dossiers took place. After deliberation of the Executive Committee, FISU President George E. Killian (USA) announced the winners of the 2015 Universiades: The 27th Winter Universiade has been attributed to Granada, Spain.

‘Granada and the Sierra Nevada is a well known snow sports area’, Eduardo Valenzuela, Bid Director said. ‘Thanks to the Winter Universiade we will be able to start developing the ice sports as well. This will make the region a complete winter sport hotbed.’ The 28th Summer Universiade has been attributed to Gwangju, Korea. ‘Many civilians walked 2,015 steps every day in support for the bid while more than 150,000 citizens have volunteered to help promote the bid’, Mayor Park said. FISU CONFERENCES

From June 28-29, 2009 the FISU General Assembly will be organised in Belgrade. Few days later, from July 2-5, 2009 the FISU CESU Conference will be also held in the Universiade host city. The event will be hosted by the Faculty of Sports and Physical Education of the Belgrade University. Experts in sports will discuss the role of sports in university education and the importance it holds in society as a platform for future changes.

SUMMER UNIVERSIADE BELGRADE 2009 All is ready for the 2009 Summer Universiade which will be organised from July 1-12, 2009 in Belgrade (SRB).

The organisers expect around 10.000 participants from all over the world, which will compete for the medals in 15 sports.

EUROPEAN UNIVERSITIES CHAMPIONSHIPS 15 European Universities Championships will be organised this year, with Bridge, Golf and Taekwondo organised for the first time. Two of the championships have already finished: EUC Volleyball in Hamburg and EUC Rugby 7’s in Bristol.

VOLLEYBALL

The 9th European Universities Volleyball Championships successfully finished on Saturday, May 23, 2009 in Hamburg (GER). 19 men and women universities teams participated on the event, organised by the ADH, the University of Hamburg and the City of Hamburg.

The titles of the European Universities Champions in 2009 went to the Mordovskiy State University (RUS) in men and the University of Economy, Bydgoszcz (POL) in women competition.

In the women final around 600 spectators enjoyed the match between the University of Economy Bydgoszcz (POL) and the University of Hamburg (GER). The Polish University Champions from Bydgoszcz were stronger and won with 3:0 (25:17, 25:19, 25:23). In the match for the bronze medal the Russian State University of Physical Education, Sports and Tourism (RUS) won the University of Czestochowa (POL) with 3:1 (25:19, 24:26, 25:17, 25:17).

In the men final, the Mordovskiy State University (RUS) played against the Russian State University of Physical Education, Sport and Tourism (RUS), the team which was defending the title of the Champions. The Mordovskiy State University won after exciting match with 3:0 (26:24, 25:20, 25:19). In the match for the bronze medal the University of Warsaw (POL) lost against the Gazi University (TUR) with 1:3 (19:25, 26:24, 17:25, 17:25).

EUC RUGBY 7’S

The 3rd European Universities Rugby 7’s Championships successfully finished in Bristol (GBR).

15 university teams (10 men, 5 women) fought from June 10-12, 2009 for the titles of the European Universities Champions. The men’s final was won very convincingly by the Russian team, Kuban State University of Physical Education, Sport and Tourism, beating the University of Coimbra (POR).

University of Exeter beat University of Lille in a very close women’s final.

The Home Team, University of Bristol, finished a very credible third, beating University of Limoges (FRA) in a playoff.

Gifts were presented to all teams by the University of Bristol. The main trophies were presented by Mr. Ben Ryan (England Sevens Coach), Mr. Derek Morgan (Former RFU President), Mr. Phil Attwell (EUSA EC Member), and Mr. Bob Reeves (Director of Sport, Exercise and Health - University of Bristol)

BRIDGE - NEW EUC SPORT EUSA PATRONAGE

The SELL Games 2009, organised under the patronage of EUSA, successfully finished in Riga (LAT). 1482 athletes and officials participated on the event organised from May 22-24, 2009. The competitions were organised in 11 sports.

The most successful was the University of Latvia (LAT) with 30 medals (14 gold, 7 silver and 9 bronze), followed by the Vilnius University (LTU) with 20 medals (10 gold, 6 silver and 4 bronze) and the Lithuanian Academy of Physical Education (LTU) with 29 medals (9 gold, 8 silver and 12 bronze). EUSA SYMPOSIUM 1st European Universities Bridge Championship will take place in Opatija (Croatia) from October 4-10, 2009 and it will be organised by the Polytechnic of Karlovac, Croatia.

The Polytechnic of Karlovac is according to the number of students (2100) the smallest member of NUSA. Regardless of that fact they have taken part in the European Championship four times. It happened at the first Championship in Serbia (2001), Slovenia (2003), France (2004), and Croatia (2007). The permanent presence at sport activities has been awarded by the trust of EUSA and NUSA for the organization of the 1st European Universities Bridge Championship which will take place in the city with bridge tradition, also called the Queen of Croatian Tourism, the Old Lady or the Adriatic Pearl. Bridge is the game of knowledge and intelligence, not luck, which demands and develops tolerance and team work because the success of game depends exclusively on understanding and cooperation between partners.

It developed at the end of the 19th century from the english game whist. It was played at the stylish bourgeois drawing rooms but not at colleges. It began to spread over America and Europe. After World War the second special academies for bridge were being organized, first in France and then in Sweden, Israel, China, Poland and elsewhere......

In Croatia it is being played at many faculties and it has become the olympic sport. Come and become the part of the European Universities Bridge History!

EUSA CONVENTION

The 2009 EUSA Convention will be organised from November 6-8, 2009 in Ljubljana (SLO). The aim of the convention is to give information and support to the organisers of the European Universities Championships in 2010. The representatives from Organising Committees of the European Universities Championships 2010 and the EUSA Representatives will discuss the terms and conditions as well as the examples for best practice of organisation of the European Universities Championships.
