UP and down the Costa Blanca, the Costa Calida and several points inland, many hundreds of people turned out on a beautiful morning to attend Remembrance Services.

Many of the local municipalities that have a large number of British citizens saw larger turn-outs than usual at what for many has become an annual event. As well as the fine, sunny weather the extra significance of the 100th anniversar y since the Armistice was signed made the day even more poignant.

The emotional services accompanied by the laying of wreathes by local politicians of all nationalities, members of various branches of the Royal British Legion, and individuals remembering their own family members, friends and colleagues that ser ved and lost their lives in defence of their country, were greeted with the silence and respect that the occasion deserved.

Heavy rain wakes up the Costas

S

TORMS woke a large number of people in the early hours of Thursday (yesterday) as significant levels of rain fell across much of the Alicante Province.

Weather stations in Calpe, Denia, Elche, Javea, Orihuela and much of the Marina Alta region recorded rainfall of more than 20

litres per m2 from 7am to 9am.

In addition, Alicante Province also experienced 346 lightning strikes that accounted for 80 per cent of those recorded during the night / early morning.

The heavy rain caused monumental traffic jams in all access roads to Alicante, and particularly affected the A-70 access to the University of Alicante.

Despite a lull during yesterday morning, the southern part of

Valencia Province was on red alert, and the northern Costa Blanca in Alicante Province was put on orange.

Despite conditions the 112 emergency ser vice repor ted the Guardia Civil and the fire brigade were only deployed to rescue one vehicle trapped.

The forecast from the Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET) said there was a chance of the rain continuing today (Friday)

Attack men sought BOTH the Guar dia Civil and the Local Police have star ted a n i nve s t i g at i o n t o find three men in connection with an alle ged r a pe in San Javier.

According to repor ts, the woman was attacked in the early hours of Saturday morning in Calle Maestre.

She was found by the Local Police r oaming in the middle of the road in a

state of shock and confusion. She then told them that she’d b e e n h av i n g d r i n k s with some friends in a nearby bar and that on the way home she’d been assaulted by the three who tried to strip her naked.

She was unable to provide a description of the men, and police ar e asking for witnesses to the inc i d e n t t o c o m e fo r ward.

Dogs found in poor state

by Darren Parmenter LARGE number of dogs have been rescued and taken into care after they were discovered to be par t of an alleged illegal animal breeding operation in Alicante.

A total of 56 dogs - many of which were discovered to be blind, with tumours and had suffe r e d v a r i o u s a m putations - are now being looked after by the authorities, but new homes are being sought for them.

T he 56-year-old female owner of the apar tment where the dogs w e r e ke p t i n a p palling conditions, was arrested.

At the same time, the authorities are trying to determine if the home was being used as an ille gal br eeding establishment, as when the woman was ar rested and t h e d o g s we r e b e ing rounded up, s h e a s ke d t h e p o l i c e n o t t o t a ke some of the puppies as ‘they had already been sold.’

The vet at the Animal Shelter where the dogs were taken, Pablo Sentana Gadea, said: “They are malnourished, are full of par asites, have tumours, long claws, and some showing signs that they’ve never seen sunlight. Five of them are also pregnant.”

T WO s e p a r at e incidents, although with a possible connection, have been r epor ted on Urb a n i s at i o n S a n Luis in Torrevieja.

The first invo l ve d a l a d y who was sitting in her lounge and saw the r eflection of a man who had just walked into her house. The man, described as being slim, aged around 40, and of Nor th African appearance was chased from the proper ty before he had the chance to steal anything.

The other incident in a nearby street saw an elderly lady openi n g h e r p o r ch w i n d ow t o l e t her cat in, when all of a sudden a man - also bel i eve d to be Nor th African fo r c e d h i s w a y in and badl y att a cke d the woman. He also deliberately smashed her emer gency call button.

T h i s at t a cke r h ow eve r f a i l e d to get away with any belongings, but left the wo m a n w i t h a broken nose and bruising.

The Guardia Civil were called to the scene but so far no ar rests have been made.

Cat volunteers threatened

A NUMBER of volunteers who care for cats in Campoamor have been subject to a series of verbal threats by residents in the area.

This follows on from the recent poisoning of a colony in the Dehesa de Campoamor, and it is the people who take care and control them who are now on the receiving end

of abuse.

A spokesperson for the volunteers said not only are they being insulted, the food that they are putting down for the cats is being picked up and thrown away, and despite what people may think, it is not a crime to provide food to the animals this way.

Brussels thumbs up to Brits for visa-free travel

BRITISH tourists definitel y won’t have to get a visa to travel to an EU countr y after Brexit, according to Brussels officials.

The news comes as

the Eur opean C ommi ssi on r eveal ed plans today to review their visa regime after Britain’s exit from the European Union.

A n EU statement said: ‘T he European Commission has today proposed to grant UK citizens visa-free travel to the EU after the United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the European Union.’

But British citizens wishing to wo r k a b r o a d i n t h e European Union will likel y r equir e visas post Br exit, though the new guarantee will assure free travel to the Schengen area.

‘It would mean that UK citizens would not need a vi sa w hen tr avel l i ng to the Schengen ar ea for shor t stays of up to 90 days i n any 180day period,’ continued the statement.

Business people support charities THE mayor of Pilar de la Horadada, Ignacio Ramos, was pleased to welcome José Antonio García Martínez, Cura Párroco, Pepita Zapata all from the charity Caritas Diocesana where a cheque was presented by the manager of Lo Romero Golf Course, Vitoriano Jimenez.

Ramos expressed his delight to be part of such a wonderful gesture of support that will mean so much to and aid the work of the Caritas Diocesana of Pilar.

LOCAL POLICE based in Albatera have succ e s s f u l l y f i n i s h e d a n o p e r at i o n a i m e d at preventing a series of thefts of pomegranates in the area.

T his is car ried out each year during the har vest period of this par ticular fr uit, and this year it’s been noticed that ther e has been a noticeable fall in robberies from the orchards. Only one person has been arrested compared to eight people last year.

He was there to listen at fir st hand to a number of concer ns,

New residency requirements

LIVING in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics.

While there are new rules for British nationals applying for residency in Spain, there will be no change to the right and status of EU nationals living in the UK, nor UK nationals living in the EU, while the UK remains in the EU. As an EU citizen it is now mandatory to register as a resident if you intend on living in Spain for more than three months.

You must register in person at the Oficina de Extranjeros (immigration office) - visit: http://www.seat.mpr.gob.es/portal/servicios/extranjeria/extranje ria_ddgg.html for regional offices - or a designated police station, which you can find at: https://www.policia.es/documentacion/ oficinas/oficinas_extran.html You must make an appointment online before going to your local office or station, which can be done on the Spanish public administration website: https://sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es/ icpplus/index.html When making your appointment you must select the province where you live and then the option ‘certificados UE’ and follow the instructions.

You take the following documents with you to your appointment: Passport or other identity document (not expired) Official form (EX-18), two copies, filled and signed by the UE national.

In addition, you will need other documents, depending on your situation: • (employed) - contract of employment or other proof of your employment status.

• (self-employed) - proof of registration in the register of economic activities or other proof of your employment status.

• (not employment in Spain) - Proof of: health cover valid in Spain; sufficient means to support yourself and your family.

• (pensioners) - provide proof of public health cover.

• (students) - proof of your registration in an educational establishment; proof of public or private health cover; formal declaration that you have sufficient means to support yourself during your stay.

You will be issued with a credit-card sized residence certificate which will include your name, address, nationality, NIE number, and date of registration.

The old A4 residence certificates are still valid, and you do not need to apply for a credit-card sized alternative unless your circumstances change, for example you move house. But you can if you want to, at any time.

After five years of being registered as a resident, you can apply for a certificate of permanent residence in Spain. The card will be similar, but state that you are a ‘residente permanente.’

After a prog r amme of wor ks w hich have cost close to â‚Ź60,000, a number of urbanisations in the area which house around 1,300 people ar e now fr ee of the strong odour s caused by the build-up of waste during the decomposition process.

Mayor of G u a r d a m a r, Jo s e Luis Saez, accompanied by a number of other councillors, joined the team from Hidr aqua at the pumping station to see the results of the wor k fir sthand.

There are a total o f s eve n s ch o o l s across the areas w h i ch h ave b e e n chosen by the Ministr y of Education to allow such religious t e a ch i n g classes.

I n o r d e r fo r t h e subject to be taught, a minimum quota of 10 students must enrol at each age level.

The plan is to have one teacher w h o w i l l t r ave l around the three schools in Cr evillente, with another covering four in Almoradi and Catral.

Link road upgrade confirmed THE re gional link road that connects Car ta gena and San Javier will soon be upgraded.

T he wor ks on the RM-F35, under stood to cost in the r egion of €218,000, will cover a six-kilometre stretch and have recently been put out to tender.

T he budget comes from the Murcia Region’s road and con-

ser vation programme and this latest series of works will see the road being cleaned and reinforced, with the aim of making the jour ney safer and more comfortable.

Torrevieja ahead of the rest S

HOPS and businesses in Torrevieja will be one week ahead of the r est when it comes to the famous Black Friday.

More than 65 estab-

lishments across the municipality have indicated that they will be offering discounts both today (Friday) and tomorrow (Saturday).

After the success of Black Friday last year, and having consulted with those that took par t, it was decided to bring the event forward by one week.

men’s, women’s and childr en’s clothing shops, shoe shops, furniture stores, DIY outlets, and other s will have discounts on almost ever ything ... and in some cases will r each 75 per cent.

Outlaw ‘cures’ that endanger wildlife by Barry Duke

BACK in the 1980’s I was put on an NHS waiting list fo r s u r g e r y t o t r e at t e n donitis. It is a condition characterised by irritation a n d i n f l a m m at i o n o f t h e tendons around the wrist joint. In my case, it badly affected my left hand.

But just a few weeks before the scheduled operation, a friend advised me to try acupuncture. He swore it would cure me, and gave me the number of a practitioner.

I was sceptical, as I have always re gar ded alter nat i ve m e d i c a l t r e at m e n t s with utmost suspicion.

However, curiosity won the day and I had two sessions with the acupuncturist. T he pain went away

and has never troubled me since.

W h at g o t m e t h i n k i n g again about traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) was a repor t I heard on BBC Rad i o 4 r e c e n t l y, a b o u t t h e immense damage being done to animal species by the demand in China for animal parts believed to cure a l l k n ow n m a l a d i e s , a n d 'devil possession'.

I’d never heard of a creature called a pangolin until that report. Pangolins are a form of scaly anteater, and their scales - made of kerat i n - a r e b e l i eve d t o e n hance kidney function and cure asthma and psoriasis.

Near l y one million pangolins have been poached in the past 10 years.

At this rate, according to the One Green Planet blog: “This little scaly creature may be poached into oblivi o n b e fo r e m o s t o f t h e wor ld is even awar e they exist.”

Ye t s t u d i e s s h ow t h at their scales have no curative effects whatsoever.

ON THE BRINK: Chinese medicine is driving the pangolin to extinction. heard of until hearing that repor t was the criticall yendangered saiga antelope fo u n d i n t h e r e g i o n o f Kazakhstan.

In a bid to stop the trade in rhino horn - another substance much in demand by practitioners of TCM - the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) made the huge mistake of encouraging the hunting of t h i s s p e c i e s fo r t h e i r horns. Today, saiga populations have shrunk from the

millions to around 50,000, and the slaughter continues relentlessly.

If this weren’t depressing enough, the BBC repor ted at the end of October that the Chinese government is now allowing the import of p owd e r e d fo r m s o f r h i n o hor n and bones from dead t i g e r s , w h i ch c o u l d b e used in ‘qualified hospitals by qualified doctors.’

That’s probably the most stupid thing I’ve read since

some fool of a Brexiteer one Irene Broadley - posted this message on her Facebook page: ‘So Europe are prepared to lose all h o l i d a y m a ke r s t h e n . B i g wide wor ld out there, you d o n’ t n e e d t o g o t o E U countries. Canar y Islands are glorious for a start!!!’

T he Wor ld W ildlife Fund (WWF) said in a statement t h at t h e m ove b y C h i n a wo u l d h ave ‘ d ev a s t at i n g consequences’ and be an ‘enor mous setback’ to effo r t s t o p r o t e c t t h e a n i mals in the wild.

Acupuncture needles are one thing, but driving animals to the brink of extinct i o n o r u s i n g ex t r e m e l y cruel methods as in the c a s e o f b e a r s ke p t i n ‘crush cages’ so that their b i l e c a n b e ex t r a c t e d , i s quite another.

It beggars belief that China, one of the wor ld’s top technological power s, is e n c o u r a g i n g r at h e r t h a n combatting super stitious b e l i e f s t h at a r e h av i n g such a devastating effect on many species.

The very good against the very evil CHRISTMAS is over, the New Year celebrations and hangovers have long since been forgotten but there’s still a very important event taking place in January, bringing the full traditions of the pantomime season.

Criminal gang arrested in the Vega Baja COLLABORATION between the Guardia Civil, National Police and the Spanish Tax Agency has resulted in the ar rest of a total of 13 members of a criminal organisation across Spain... with connections to the Vega Baja.

These included people being detained in Torrevieja and Guardamar del Segura in connection with alle ged dr ug tr afficking.

In this latest operation they found 14 kilos of cocaine, 10 kilos of marihuana, 1.6 kilos of hashish, 50 g r ams of amphetamines, nine high-end cars, a 9mm pistol with ammunition, computer equipment and more than €600,000 in a case. T he total haul is believed to be value at more than €1.7 million.

The operation called ‘Alicafe I’ began back in September 2017 after discovering that a large amount of cocaine was found on a catamar an tr avelling fr om South America to Por tugal... but the final destination was actually Torrevieja fr om w her e it was distributed acr oss the mainland and to the Canar y Islands.

Ticket sellers on the up SO far this year, the Spanish National Blind Organisation (ONCE) has taken on an extra 400 members of staff in the Murcia region alone.

Many of them are acting as sellers for the Organisation for the Promotion of Disabled People (OID) after attending and successfully completing a number of training courses and passing a medical examination.

SAN JUAN de Alicante is a municipality with more than 23,000 inha bitants, and yet over the weekend there is only one Local Police officer on patrol due to the lack of staff numbers.

Accor ding to the Pr ovincial Secretariat of the Professional Union of Local Police and Firefighters (SPPLB), there was only one policeman on duty in the police station in San Juan, and another out and about on patrol, which ‘puts the security of both the police and local people at risk.’

According to repor ts, this is due to the police being frustrated at the lack of numbers, and they’ve also stopped doing overtime.

Brit dies snorkelling A 55-YEAR-OLD British man died on the beach of Els Testos in Benitachell.

According to repor ts, the man had gone with a friend for a swim and to go snorkelling in the sea off a par t of the beach which is only accessible by a path.

While the pair were in the water, his companion lost sight of his friend and the alar m was raised when he didn’t surface and then failed to return to the beach.

Maritime Rescue Officers who had gone to the scene later found the lifeless body of the man floating in the sea in the darkness.

He was taken from the water to the p o r t o f Javea w he r e th ey were met by the Guardia Civil.

Rallying round LOCALS and councils in the Marbella area have rallied round a young Spanish woman who continues to recover in hospital after losing four of her limbs to septicaemia.

Members of the Marbella Local Police Association said they have donated €1,000 to Sarah Almagro Vallejo.

They added they would also sell 1,000 bracelets to help raise additional funds for her. Marbella, Estepona and other towns have also organised fundraising events for her.

An expatriate friend of Sarah’s family told RTN that she is getting better but has fought off pneumonia while recovering.

She has been in and out of the Costa del Sol Hospital’s intensive care unit as a result, the family friend added.

Sarah’s friends and family rallied around her after she contracted septicaemia in July. The bacterial blood infection almost took her life.

Sarah, 18, from Marbella, said she began vomiting on the night of July 23 and felt as though she was coming down with a fever. She went first to a health centre before being taken to the emergency ward at Costa del Sol hospital.

Sarah spent 10 days in a coma and underwent several operations including amputations and dialysis treatment.

Sarah’s family said she is a keen sportswoman and a natural athlete.

Her favourite sport is surfing.

A fundraising drive has since been set up under the name ‘Somos Tu Ola’ (We Are Your Wave) in reference to Sarah’s love of surfing. Marbella City Council has also organised a series of sports events from Friday December 14 to Sunday December 16 in aid of Sarah.

A charity football tournament has also been organised in Estepona on December 6 to raise money for her prosthetics.

Guilty plea to murder A MAN who shot an ‘acquaintance’ several times in Camino de Campanales, Mijas, received a shorter prison term after pleading guilty just before being sentenced.

The defendant was facing 11 years in prison, but after accepting the account of the public prosecutor at the Provincial Court of Malaga on Monday, was reduced to nine years.

A mitigating factor in the incident was deemed to be his drug addiction, which affected his state of mind.

However, the defendant will serve eight years in jail for murder, and one year for the illegal possession of weapons.

The victim, a 35- year-old Colombian man, was shot several times in the face and head on September 17, 2015, according to the prosecution’s evidence.

It was heard the victim was sitting in his car, talking on the phone, when a motorcycle approached and the defendant, riding on the back, shot the victim seven times.

The rider of the motorcycle has

not been identified, and the pistol used has not been found.

Three months after the killing, the defendant voluntarily presented himself at the Fuengirola National Police station.

Focused fraud probe A MAN accused of renting photographic equipment with the intention of selling it on, has been arrested in Estepona.

National Police launched an investigation after a complaint was filed in Sevilla by the owner of a photographic supplies company, claiming the suspect had hired a camera and several accessories, wor th €3,000, and not returned them.

The complainant said he had also seen objects similar to his own for sale on the internet.

Sources confirm the suspect was arrested after meeting with a potential buyer in an industrial estate. Inside the boot of his car officers found the missing equipment, a laptop and other items.

The 36-year-old, from Madrid, had 29 legal claims in his name, most for fraud.

Another scabies case reported AS repor ted in last week’s RTN the outbreak of scabies at the Marina Baixa Hospital in Villajoyosa has been controlled... but another case has now been reported in Altea.

The town hall immediately contacted the Marina Baja Health au-

thority and put established protocols in place to stop the spread of the disease. In addition, the local people’s minds were put at rest, mainly thanks to the quick action of the mother of a young girl who belongs to the local rhythmic gymnastics team. She infor med the

town hall as soon as her daughter’s condition was confirmed.

Councillor Per e Barber r said teachers and others at the girl’s school were advised to take the necessary preventative measures.

At this stage, it’s not known if the girl contracted the disease as a

result of the original outbreak in Villajoyosa where four patients and 25 members of staff had been affected.

“This is not a serious illness,” Altea’s Health councillor Diego Martinez said. “It is easily treated and there is no need for social alarm.”

Possessive adjectives

Basic Spanish for everyday needs

WE seem to be having quite a good run on the ‘little words’ which students have told me over the years are what trouble them most. To be honest, some of the little words in Spanish don’t even bear thinking about, and we have had a glimpse of those with our direct and indirect pronouns, but there are others that are really quite friendly.

As far as I remember we haven’t looked ver y much at possessive adjectives so that is our mission for today. We have seen before that adjectives are words that describe - such as, big, green, interesting. So we can say: ‘The big book’, ‘the green book’, ‘the interesting book’. We can also describe something in terms of who it belongs to - ‘my book’.

Therefore the word ‘my’ has the same function as ‘big’, ‘green’ or ‘interesting’ and is called a ‘possessive adjective’. In English these words do not change, so I would say ‘my book’ or ‘my books’.

However, in Spanish as we know, adjectives change to agree in num-

ber (singular or plural) and gender (masculine or feminine) with whatever they are describing, and the same thing happens with possessive adjectives.

We also learnt before that some adjectives (those that end in ‘o’ in the masculine singular) make four possible changes, (eg bueno, buena, buenos, buenas) whilst others (those that end in any other letter in the masculine singular) only make two changes - for singular and plural (grande, grandes) With possessive adjectives the

same principle applies, so ‘mi’ (my) can only change to ‘mis’ for the plural. ‘Mi libro’ (my book), ‘mis libros’ (my books).

The same change happens with ‘tu’ (your - singular familiar form) ‘tu libro’ (your book), ‘tus libros’ (your books) and ‘su’ which can mean ‘his’, ‘her’, ‘your’ (usted version) and also ‘their’ and ‘your’ (ustedes version). All those ideas are expressed by ‘su’ or ‘sus’ - with the one change relating to what is possessed (eg one book, or more than one book).

Hopefull y that point is reason-

ably clear, but it is important to realise that these changes wor k completely differently from English, where the changes (eg his, her, their) relate to the person possessing, not what is possessed.

When we come to the words for ‘our’ and ‘your’ (that is ‘your’ when the possessor is in the familiar plural form), we come across two adjectives that end in the letter ‘o’, namely ‘nuestro’ and ‘vuestro’.

Again, following the usual adjective rules, these words can make four changes. Therefore we would say ‘ nuestr o coche’ (our car) ‘nuestra casa’ (our house), ‘nuestros coches’ (our cars) ‘nuestras casas’ (our houses).

Likewise ‘vuestro, vuestra, vuestros and vuestras’ are the four familiar plural possessive adjectives. So, for example, if I was talking to a couple who were friends and saying something about their children, I would refer to them as ‘vuestros hijos’. If this imaginary couple only had daughters and not sons I would say ‘vuestras hijas’. Maybe this makes some sense, but as ever needs plenty of practice!

Fighting for animal rights

SUE and Rod Weeding moved to Spain from England in 2001, aiming to slip into an easy sunshine-and-relaxation retirement.

But all that changed in 2008 with Luceiro, a two-year-old stallion they found locked in a filthy and dark stable, his left eye badly injured and rotting, hurling himself repeatedly against the bars of his stall as flies drove him crazy.

Unable to walk away from such a distressing case of animal cruelty, they brought Luceiro home to their finca and unwittingly created a much-needed horse rescue centre.

motoring ON October 3, the European Parliament voted for draft cuts in carbondioxide (CO2) emissions from new cars of 20 per cent by 2025, and 40 per cent by 2030.

An additional requirement means that by 2030, 35 per cent of all new car sales will be low or zero-emissions vehicles.

As a result, the future of private motoring is looking very different.

Three things are virtually certain: almost all new cars will have some kind of electrical propulsion; motoring will get more expensive; and sports models with large capacity V8 and V12 engines will be consigned to history.

The brave new world involves batter y electric; petrol and diesel hybrids; and the fuel cell.

Its hydrogen fuel might be the most common element in the universe, but it’s also diffi-

range anxiety in a fuelcell car than in its batter y-electric equivalent.

However, compared with the complicated software and chemistry requirements of building a batter y-electric car, fuel cells add advanced engineering design and production.

The basis of the Mercedes F-Cell is the GLC , the Bremenbuilt SUV version of the C-class, a stur dy five-door with plenty of room front and back.

T he fuel-cell and electrical systems have been made 30 per cent smaller so they’ll

fit under the bonnet in place of a conventional internal combustion engine.

The 13.5kWh lithiumion battery pack can be recharged exter nally and twin hydrogen tanks hold a total of 4.4kg of gas at 10,000 psi and sit in the transmission tunnel under the rear seats.

It’s a rear-wheel drive car, with a 208bhp AC electric motor, which gives a top speed of 100mph.

Most car-maker s stress that fuel-cell hybrids use technology developed from petrol and diesel hybrids, but in practice a fuel-cell hybrid has a more natural feel because both power sources supply electricity.

Honda Civic Type R: A car with charisma THE Honda Civic Type R has a lot of front, and holds the front wheel-drive car record around the Nurburgring.

It is certainly not a shrinking violet, with skirts, vanes, ducts, vortex generators, splitters, diffusers, a huge deck spoiler and a bonnet scoop. Not to mention three exhaust pipes.

According to Honda this ‘aggressive silhouette makes a confident statement about the Civic Type R’s dynamic character.’

This new model is longer, lower and wider, and the smooth underbody makes it hug the ground with more downforce.

Unlike some rivals the high level rear spoiler doesn’t block the view out the back window and although faked, the carbon fibre effect gives it a smart updated look.

The large rear wheel extensions are needed to accommodate the wider track and the trapezoidal bonnet scoop sits in an aluminium bonnet that is 5.3kg lighter than the steel bonnet on a standard five-door model.

Like a Golf GTI, red is the highlight

colour Honda has opted for in the lines running around the car, and a two-litre petrol engine puts out a hefty 320bhp.

Even with that power going through just the front wheels, the Civic Type R zooms to 60mph from zero in 5.8 seconds.

Although it is only available with a six-speed annual box, the machined ball alloy gear knob is a joy to use.

T here is a new single-mass flywheel to reduce clutch inertia by 25 per cent, and a 7 per cent lower final ratio.

Adding a final touch of theatrics is the throttle ‘blipping’ effect from the rev matching function.

Standard models get special readouts, including an LED gearshift indicator light, boost pressure gauge, GMeter and lap time recorder.

Safety measures include a Collision Mitigation Braking System, Forward Collision Warning and Lane Departure Warning.

Overall, it is not a car that your parents are going to like, but that is surely part of its appeal.

HOLLYWOOD GLAMOUR: The stylish Thunderbird suited its famous owner.

A FORD Thunderbird owned by Marilyn Monroe is for sale at auction in Los Angeles next month, when it is estimated that it will sell for €260,000 to €430,000.

She bought the car in 1 9 5 5 , j u s t b e fo r e m a r r y ing playwright Ar thur M i l l e r, a n d h a d i t u n t i l s h o r t l y b e fo r e h e r d e at h in 1962.

A repor t published at the time suggests that the couple dr ove this vehicle to their civil wedding cer emony on June 28, 1956, and probably

also to their private wedding two days later.

The Thunderbird has a 312 cubic-inch (just over 5,000cc) V8 engine prod u c i n g 2 2 5 h o r s e p o w e r, w hich gave a top speed of 113mph.

W ith a two-door roadster body, it was pitched a s Fo r d ’s a n swe r t o t h e Chevr olet Cor vette pr oduced by its rival General Motors.

Its bodywork is finished in Raven Black, with a black and white interior.

As standard, it has Fo r d - O - M a t i c a u t o m a t i c

transmission, power steering and br akes along with electric windows and seats.

Although Marilyn Monroe bought it in late 1955, the T hunderbir d is a 1956 model and, as such, came fr om the factor y with both its canvas conver tible top and a detachable hard top with distinctive ‘por thole’ windows on each side.

Having owned it for six year s the actress gave it to John Strasberg, son of director and revered acting coach Lee Strasber g,

for his 18th bir thday.
